In Reply to: You are not "certified" - I really wish that new graduates- sm - XXX

Actually the exam is $200 - or it was when I took it in December. But yes, they want at least 2 years of experience. That is why I get so mad at these schools - I think CareerStep is the only one left that doesn't string you along and tell you that you will be "certified" once you graduate. They tell you that you will qualify for the certification exam after X months working and they will help you with job placement - LOTS different than what some of these shadier schools are telling students.

These posters are right, Barbie, you should go back to your school and ask if they have placement assistance. You should have been told to expect to work in an office or hospital for at least the first 6 months of your career - 2 or 3 years if you want to go IC. After that sometimes the job will allow you to keep working for them from home (what happened to me) but you have to ask, show that you are capable, and have all your own equipment. Otherwise you are competing against people with decades of experience and people in foreign lands that are willing to work for a fraction of a penny per line - as opposed to the dozens of pennies that we expect.

Companies are also looking for VR, if you are willing to work for at less than 1/3 of what a regular MT would get then a company may be willing to hire a new graduate as a VR. This is where the dictation has been put through a voice recognition software and automatically typed up - you then edit the result for accuracy. Of course if you research this board you will find that many times VR takes as long or longer then a regular transcription job so you will be making about 1/3 less than an MT for the same amount of time on the job. Especially since you are new your Expanders and such will not be ready to handle this well.

Anyway, even with 10 years experience I am having trouble finding an IC job. I am looking into some local possibilites but no one is hiring right now. The market is flooded so if you want a job you have to find a way to really shine for them - and that will be hard as a trubie newbie!

Good luck! :)
