but that's how docs work, at least some of them.

Instant Text Macros vs Word Macros

Thank you for replying to my VR macro question on mtstars. I was hoping someone like you with knowledge of Instant Text and VR work could help me out. Could you give me an example of how you would set up a macro to change a period to a comma and uncap the next letter in Instant Text for example? Do you think using macros and commands like this in Instant Text is more productive than creating them in Word?

Don't know who is ultimately correct on this...
as I've had to do it both ways, depending on account request. Right now, I'm having to use 2, account before that used 1, and there was one point where I was having to do it both ways, because I had accounts that wanted it 1 and 2; if that wasn't a trip!!. I know, when I took a Microsoft Office class some years back, that the instructor said to use 1 space now because of proportional font business, etc.
But it is ultimately the company

Not the IC you've contracted to transcribe 500 lines per day. What needs to be in place is another IC to pick up the slack when your contractor is in need of some help. That is not fair to just say that a contractor has no say in whether or not he or she chooses to do the work day in and day out. Cut me a break here. By the way, clueless is hardly what I am. I am very successful and the reason is because I am accountable for my own work. I have my own clients that I service and I do not rely on contractors to do MY WORK. If I did contract work out, I would make sure I could do it if they couldn't. Now if I have employees, then they'd be made to comply or they wouldn't have a job.

what may ultimately be the greatest hurdle

Is finding the job that gives you everything you want:
1. Good line rate.

3. Freedom to work the hours you want.

In the final analysis, you might have to relinquish one to get the other two. Sort of like the old days of dealing with clients:
Quality - Turn Around - Price
Pick Two!!!

If you do, you'll make sure the hospital is happy. Not a lot you can do here unless you want to cut a deal with the hospital where you will have a sub work your account for you when you are off. That may or may not fly at the hospital. Another thing you can ask is that they hire a third person to work the account. Of course, that means you risk losing work if she wants more...

As far as being replaced by VR
pitching it to the larger institutions. These so-called American companies are just as much to blame for facilities/physicians going with VR. If you really think about it, the national can pitch VR at a pretty low rate since they have editors/QA to do it for 3 cpl and at the most what 5 cpl. If you are doing VR, you are probably just as much part of the problem. Of course as an independent you probably could not handle an account for a hospital by yourself, so you would have to hire MTs, hence a company comes to form. Larger companies have more capital and can market their product (platforms). It is not just India taking this market over, it is the large American companies as well taking the pie from the little guy. You also see posts of people gaining their own accounts still, so this tells me that not all physicians feed into the larger national/India deal. Look at Diskriter, just as one example, they are practically begging people to come and work for them. Look on any job board, VR/editing is what these companies are seeking, but they unfortunately only want to pay 5 cpl at the most, which is very sad. Money maker if I've ever seen one. Makes ya' wonder....
Not when it's replaced by
VR or some off-shore worker.
I have never replaced my headset -

When I worked in someone else's office, rarely but occasionally a headset would/might break. However, since being at home doing same work 10 years, I have never had to replace my headset (the one that came with a transcriber years ago); however, I have had to replace several transcribers over the MANY, MANY years and think I'm on my 3rd one now......finally got a Lanier (they are the best in my opinion for transcriber machines).

Er, I mean WE replaced our Linksys
with a Netgear router.

My first post wasn't very clear.

No wonder we're being replaced
Perhaps I'm just having a bad moment because I'm in the midst of a job hop, but I'm venting/ranting just a bit. On another board, a newbie MT writes a solitary paragraph, and in that one paragraph there are three errors, one a grammatical error, one a spelling error, and one misuse of a word that spellcheck would not have caught. If we can't show that we have an edge that VR doesn't, no wonder we're being eased out.

For the record, you ACCEPT not except a position. You PURSUE other offers, not persue. And when listing a grouping of people, English is polite and let's the other people go first- so it's my family and me, not me and my family.
I think she should have replaced the semicolon with a
comma and should have taken out the other comma you have in there.
Not totally replaced...only for Katrina

Perhaps they meant replaced as in these companies
apparently have the mistaken belief they will be able to replace experienced, knowledgeable, skilled MTs with minimal wage proofers some day. I hope to be around to watch that catastrophe.
So ideally, how often should a keyboard be replaced?
I'm on of those who eats and drinks at my computer :)

I never considered this as a regular expense, maybe I wouldn't have shelled out for a wireless keyboard. Don't they have those vacuum/brush thingies that can clean keyboards?
Netgear replaced our Linksys.
The same thing was happening to me when I had Linksys, so DH replaced it with this Netgear one has never had the problem.

The cable company said the router was causing the problem.
No, they're not. Fan is getting ready to die. Disconnect it and have it replaced. nm

Staff will be reduced and equipment not replaced
Care provider will attempt to maintain their income and will attempt this by reducing staff/overhead (that includes transcription by the way).

The medicare/medicaid patient should have copays that are reasonable.

Reasonable is the key word here. But there is a sense of urgency that is taking place due to the state of Social Security and the aging baby boomers who are beginning to retire, who will due to good medical care for a lifetime, perhaps live for 20 plus years on Medicare benefits.

The electronic medical record has replaced MTs at my job..it's all over!

My job has been scanning all the medical records over to electronic medium and the doctors are now taking laptops in the exam room with them and typing in all the info, so basically, my job will be obselete once this transition is over.

Our boss has been doing a comparison of the clinics who now have the electronic medical record--those docs went from dictating thousands of lines in a weekly period to less than 50!!! Of course this is a tremendous difference and it's "lights out" for us MTs. We've got about a good year before it's all done.

Have any of you been affected by this new technology?

P.S. I didn't care so much anyhow...I hate this industry and this job, so I've been looking for other employment anyhow.

I always thought that the reason CR wasn't replaced -sm
by tapes/videotape, recordings, etc. long ago, was that there was some major legal reason for having an actual live person there that could SEE and HEAR each participant in the case do the court reporting, and the same for depositions. Something about the veracity of the resulting printed document generated by a live CR, as opposed to one generated by a machine (that could be tampered with.)
I am so paranoid of being replaced with a lower wage employee.

On a positive note, with dictators like these humans will never be replaced. sm
No VR program will ever perfect the ability to cut/paste, or add necessary punctuation to reports. There will always be a need for editors. Of course, it still doesn't alleviate the frustration of having to deal with either one, ASR or horrific dictators.
Can anywone recommend a good vacuum cleaner? My old one broke and has to be replaced. Thanks. NM

i have been through some rough times lately and had to apply for some help. there are signs, big signs, all over our offices saying "YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE LEGAL TO GET HELP". so we and our government do give them our benefits whether they are legal here or not. now that is messed up. i am helping to support them so they can take away my jobs and i can't even support my kids and yes i get benefits, wow $75 a month in food stamps which lasts not even a week in a household of 6. don't get me wrong, i am thankful for any help at the moment, but i get penalized for trying to work my tail off and still can't survive.

there was recently an article in our local newspaper where one of our local school districts tried to charge $1000 a year for each illegal student enrolled. it was bulked and the illegals got a lawyer to sue for discrimination. the school district merely stated that they had to HIRE extra teachers that could speak the foreign language just to teach these children and were trying to offset some of the expenses. ridicilous!! so again our taxpayers money is paying to educate illegals as well.
Aw come one give her a break. She said she was sorry and is willing to refund. Give her a chance to

do what is right. If she fails to do what is right, then go about this in an adult way and not act like such a child. "you suck" That is so immature.

She is responding to you and you are eating her alive. Why would she put herself out there to be treated like this if she didnt mean it.

I am really astonished at how people can act on here. Would you treat people like this in person? If you do, I cant imagine you having very many friends.

Remember we are all "HUMAN."

I had a lot of trouble with static in my C-phone. I replaced the phone cord and that made a big

difference. Also, have you tried a different headset? Also someone told me one time that there is a microphone under your volume control on the right corner of the C-phone. It's a tiny hole. If you break off a Q-tip and stick that into the hole that will squelch a lot of background noise and that worked as well. As far as getting your C-phone service, I heard that Dictaphone is "sunsetting" C-phones at the end of this year. Meaning, they aren't going to service them anymore as they are considered an obsolete technology. So, I would contact Dictaphone and see what your options are.

I know very little about Lanier equipment. I've not used it as extensively as Dictaphone. Is there a local appliance repair place in your area? You might ask one of those places to take a look at your equipment and see what they think. Kinda scary, cause they could do more harm than good, but maybe worth a shot.

Not much help, I know. But I thought I would share what tiny bit of obscure knowledge I do have.

Macros

I am not a Medquist Transcriptionist but could you tell me to record a macro and then run the macro that you just made. I used to work at home and used Instant Text. I now work for a hospital and can't use that. They totally rely on Word capabilities. I do use the Auto Correct but I think if I could use a macro it might be better. However, it is hard to remember the various macros or abbreviations. I also have to contend that more than one person is using my computer. Linda

Macros
Can you use macros on your transcription platform?
WP Macros

At Productivitytalk.com there is a forum for WP for Windows macros. Hope this helps.

Dr. wants macros?
Tell anyone who wants anything you have worked hard at to enhance your profession as a confidential handler of information that you cannot copy or lend any information from your computer as it violates your high standard of patient or doctor confidentiality. That should shut them up!
What are macros?
What are macros and why are they helpful in transcription?
Use of Macros
I use macros for whole paragraphs (i.e. physical exams that the doctors use all the time). I use auto correct in word to use as my Expander (i.e. bp for blood pressure). I've yet to try the other Expanders such as Shorthand, but maybe someday.
macros
by using auto correct.
RE: Macros
I don't use macros, I just use the Word Correct option, always have. But, now I use pcshorthand and I never have to keep making the shortcuts and stuff over and over again.
macros HELP!!!

I need serious help recording macros. If someone has macros for the following actions, I would greatly appreciate it if you could email them to me as an attachment. I need one for jumping that uses ?? and ctrl+J to get from ?? to ?? and one that starts automatic numbering in the 1) 2) format flush left. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

macros
Something similar happened to me not too long ago. What I found was that my Normal.dot file was corrupted. If that is the case, you need to rename the file to something that Windows will not recognize, such as *corruptfile* and then reboot your computer. Once it restarts, Windows will automatically rebuild another Normal.dot file that is not corrupt. Of course, you will lose any information you have already stored and you will have to start all over again building your macros. This is what happened to me and I ended up losing five years worth of stored macros. I still have not rebuilt everything that I lost with one corrupt file. Good luck.
Or how about macros

The template idea is a good one. If that doesn't work, something like a macro to do your report headings might work. One company I worked for wanted them to be in bold. It was a hospital account and I was doing consults, so a template wouldn't work as far as stock phrases, etc. I created macros for all of my headings and had all of my keyboard keys assigned with them. I had Ctrl M assigned to me IMPRESSION that was in bold and I was in the right spot to start typing the paragraph. I had all of my keyboard keys assigned to shortcuts that I had created - I overrode all of the standard shortcuts that Windows does.

The other poster is also correct in terms of phrases. Anything that is more than 3 letters that can be condensed down to 3 letters easily, you need to do. It does slow you down at first to do all of it, but it'll be worth it. Even things like "further evaluation" I have that condensed to "fe". You have to use a system that works for you and your brain. If I have two words I use the first letter of each word and if that letter combination is taken, then I use the first letter of each word and the succeeding letters from the second word, for instance "renal insufficiency" is "rin" since "ri" was already taken for respiratory insufficiency.

If you can change the position of words in your expander, i.e., change the order that words appear on the screen, that helps. I use Smartype and there were some words that Smartype didn't think were as important that I use a lot, so I was able to move them up in the "rankings" and have them appear on the screen sooner so I was able to get to them with fewer characters.

Good luck.

macros

I actually set up macros in Word. I have HPI for HISTORY OF PRESENT ILLNESS and "hpil" for history of present illness, as sometimes I don't want it all caps.

I set up macros for all my headings, HPI, ROS, PE, etc., and assigned keyboard shortcuts to them. Ctrl + R was REVIEW OF SYSTEMS, Ctrl + P was PHYSICAL EXAMINATION, Ctrl + C was CURRENT MEDICATIONS, etc. I had to make a list as I used every single one of my keys for the different headings, but it saved a ton of time in the long run. You can set the macro up to have it bold and all caps and then either put your two spaces, or return to the next line wherever you need to start your typing.

I don't have that job any more, so I don't need those headings specifically, but I work on the Bayscribe platform that has some weird formatting things. To bold something you need , so I set up a macro to do that and to give me the end bold code which is . Saves me a ton of time so I don't have to look for the < or > keys.

Hope that helps.

Help-Building macros!!!
Can anyone tell me where to find a good resource for learning to build macros or Expander abbreviations.
I set up macros like that in Word
and assigned a shortcut combination to them. Such as Alt+H for history and physicals, etc. I don't know of any other way you could do it.
Macros - MSWord

When I do clinic notes I need to make a log, so have been copying the heading over to another document.

However, someone told me that in WP8 there is a macro that can do this automatically. If true, is there such a thing in Word?

If anyone keeps a separate log, can you tell me how you do it.

Thank you.

Doctor wants my macros!!!!!????

This is not the first time this has happened to me. However, I always have a hard time getting my pont across when asked. I once again have a doctor who would like to cut his rate, go to voice recognition, etc. However, he wants me to give him my macros! Am I to give him all my macros that I programed so that he can give them to someone else? I feel that whatever means or vehicle I use to give him the finished transcript is my proprietary information. I could really use some help in this fight though. Any thoughts or opinions would be greatly appreciated.

saving macros
You can save onto a disk by going to tools>templates and add-ins - click Add. Browse to find Program files/microsoft office/office 11/macros folder. C Click ok twice then pick tools>macro>macros. Choose support.doc from the bos. In the macros scroll box choose backup click run.
