EVERYONE NEEDS TO KNOW: SM

Some of the responses on this thread are mindboggling. First off, Stumped's figures are valid. Mine are similar.

Everyone in this field really, really needs to understand: Production with an Expander is setting the new standard for typing speed. If people typing 75 wpm were still making $25-30/hour, then people using Expanders would be making $80-100 an hour, and more. The healthcare industry/patients can't afford to pay MTs to get wealthy doing this work, so wages are being adjusted to what MTs using expanders and the other benefits of computer technology produce, not just to offshore wages. The adjustment will continue.

People planning to continue in this field, or any field dependent on extensive keyboarding, must get an expander and train themselves to use it intensively. Or go broke. Eventually, though, once the transition to expanders has progressed to the standard, people who are not naturally killer-fast typists or who do not use expanders will not be able to get an MT job at all. People working long-term in hospital jobs need to take notice before it's served by sloppy adminstrators who didn't incorporate expanders into the job when they should have.

If that's not reality enough, the change to the EMR is likely to change whatever MT work survives beyond recognition. The ability to stay on one's toes and provide the new skills needed will be the difference between continuing to work at home and unexpectedly having to take a genuinely low-wage job when pushed out in the cold. As always, best wishes.
