Gain 100 pounds! That's pretty sad that anyone

would want to LET themselves go like that!

I hope you're kidding, but in some ways, I do know that transcriptionists sure do gain A TON OF WEIGHT!

44 pounds in 1 month is doable when you start out at over 400 pounds.
It still counts, though, so Martha, you are doing a wonderful job. Keep it up the diet and exercise especially. Those pounds are going to melt away! You can do it!
I can tell you, 75% GAIN weight. But you might need them for a while anyway.

Gain knowledge sm
I think I addressed this before, you cannot get enough knowledge to put in your bank. If they are willing to pay you, soak it in like a sponge. It's hard, I wanted to quit so many times but I went from "duh" to "diva" by blood, sweat and tears. It's worth it, hang in!! Knowledge is power.
Do it, you have nothing to lose and lots to gain -sm
Years ago I started a Paralegal certificate program in Annapolis, was 4 or so courses into it, then we moved to Richmond, VA and I started to go to University of Richmond for their Paralegal program....I took 4 classes there but then "dropped out" right after my second child was born....that was 6 years ago. I had every intention to go back 2 years ago but then my mom got sick and life when down hill from there. Things are finally normalizing now and I (again) plan to go back in the Fall, have to budget it in as it is over $900 for 1 class, I have 18 more classes to take, this will be one expensive certificate but it is an excellent school (private hence the high cost). I have extensive office administration experience so this can only enhance my current abilities and I look forward to working in the law field one day. So IF I keep at it at 3 classes a year, I will finally be done in 6 years. At that point my kids will be 12 and 14, and I will be 47. I plan on doing it though I will be an old lady (LOL), so age is relative. I do not feel old even though I am 40, remember "Life is a state of mind".....quote from "Being There" (I think I am remembering that correctly).
time to get gain control again
Hayseed, I feel for you.  It's not worth it, no matter what you are paid or the benefits.  Sounds like THEY are in control of your life, not you and you resent it, as you should.  My advice would be to get control of the situation again if you are able to (work something out with them) or move on.  This is just not worth it.  It really isn't.  Not worth your health, the sacrifice of your peace of mind.  Your body and emotions are rebelling big time.  You deserve better.  You know it and that's probably part of the anger you are feeling.  You're no newbie who must endure just to get experience.  Think about a change for the sake of your own health.
weight gain and depression!!! nm

not out to stir the pot or gain brownie points
Okay, I'll tell. I work for an MTSO that is known for its standard of hiring only the best of the best MTs. The only feedback I get is for the exceptionally good work I do and the raises it earns.

I just think the OP is conflicted...trying to "set" us all straight while s/he studies to move out of this profession and still projects that the rest of us should care about it - as if anyone who has been in this business has not kept up with the changes; where it used to be, where it is now and where it is heading.

I do my part through the work I produce. My work ethic would hold true whether I produce reports or greet people at Wal-Mart. I have nothing to prove or need the attention as it seems the OP does.

Again, this is a waste of bandwidth.
What percentage productivity gain do you get with InstanText?

Am thinking of switching.  I currently get 400% productivity with SH8 (it types 3 characters for every 1 I type).  Can anyone out there get similar figures with InstanText?

10 pounds
The last 10 pounds are so hard to lose, so you'll have to really watch your diet here, incorporate some weight training, lots of water, more protein and less carbs. Do cardio first thing a.m., 30 minutes or so 3 days a week. Here is a link that has some ways to find out how much you burn, etc. http://www.nutristrategy.com/activitylist4.htm
Not many. A lot of Indians use Canada as a crutch to gain US business and
for processing.  You'd probably do better at MTGab since it is a Canadian MT site.
I started MT to gain skills to eventually work....sm

outside my home. I was working another small business from home too and had been home for 13 years total. My MT skills got me a job as a secretary for the Army. My first position didn't pay a lot, but it was still about $3.50 more an hour than I could find anywhere else locally. In August 2006, with promotions etc., I will have had total increases in salary of 45% in two years. My next move is to start taking some college courses (which my employer will pay for) and applying for positions with a more defined career field. Having a hard time figuring out which field, as I have a lot of options/opportunity.

Working from home served a huge purpose, but since DH is also self-employed, my current job adds a lot of security to our family in terms of health/life insurance, retirement, paid vacations, etc. I added up the cost of all my paid benefits vs. paying out of pocket as an independent contractor, and they were worth another 35 - 40% of my salary, which will increase once I start taking college classes.

If you are not looking in the medical field, gear your resume towards your other skills. MTs have a myriad of skills (research, computer, organizational, listening, following instructions, bookkeeping). If you are an independent contractor, you are more than an MT, you are a small business owner, which puts a host of additional skills on your plate. Get creative and look at some on-line resumes in different fields, you will probably be surprised how many skills you have.

When I decided to look for a job, I researched all the highest paying companies/opportunities within the distance I was willing to travel and only applied to those companies. It took about a year and a few interviews, but I eventually got exactly what I was looking for. I still get calls from some of the places I interviewed/applied offering jobs.

No, the problem was HER and then don’t use the kids as a crutch to gain sympathy.
Some of us are not into the reasons she listed for her plight or lack of as we heard from her. I have no sympathy to her, for her, towards her, nothing. I am sure others feel exactly the same as I do. This person trying to get over on you, me and any others she can. What a deadbeat.
I tried that, gained 30 pounds. Now, it's
Splenda, Splenda, Splenda. Only enjoy chocolate once a week now. Hmm, maybe that's why I get depressed? Chocolate withdrawals!
I am real too at 96 pounds. I would never let myself get that fat.

I have and think it is really cute. I just wish pounds
would melt off me like the snow melts off the little boy LOL!!!
I used to be 235.5 pounds and now weigh 115.5 (sm)
I am in the process of registering with the weight loss registry. I couldn't believe there was one! I did the yo-yo dieting forever. My recommendation to you is to scare yourself into the weight loss. Go get some labs done, etc., and find out how scary some of those numbers are. I personally had a scare, and that's what led to my weight loss. I've kept it off for a year and a half, including through a pregnancy. The weight loss registry has found that those who lose weight and kept it off have been essentially scared into it.

Good luck!
Bluefish and about 2 pounds of it. nm

My cat is 13 pounds and she just fits in the....

Sounds like a 27 pound cat might be too big for the litter boxes with the covered housing/top.  My cat just fits into this regular sized one.  Suggest you either get a bigger litter box system or have one built.  A 27 pound cat is a HUGE (loveable) cat who needs above-normal sized cat box.

Just my 3 cents  as a CAT LOVER!!!  *S*

Absolutely! I have 2 over 50 pounds...gee!

Does hormone replacement (specifically low dose Prempro) cause you to gain weight? nm

What type of doctor specializes in helping people gain weight?

I'm kind of baffled on what my mother should do, and I'm hoping that someone out there has typed a report on something like this.

My mom weighs 78 pounds and cannot gain weight through diet.  She has seen several doctors, and they are not sure what she should do.  Is there a type of doctor that specializes in this?

Her history is that she had a severe H. pylori infection.  When I was a kid it was so severe that her stomach ulcers hemorrhaged and she went into a coma for a while.  By the time H. pylori became an actual diagnosable condition, the infection had eaten away most of her stomach.  She went on antibiotics finally, but by that time she had to have the majority of her stomach, some of her intestines, and her gallbladder removed.

She now eats quite a bit, but everything runs right through her.  She can't gain weight no matter how much she consumes.  She has tried all the protein drinks and even tried eating large quantities of trail mix with no results.  She can't gain weight no matter what she tries.

She has seen several doctors and a dietician.  None have have offered any real solutions and all have questioned whether she is anorexic and just hiding it.

Does anyone know of a clinic or hospital that specializes in this?  Are there any types of treatment for this?

She looks really bad, IMO. She looked good about 50 pounds ago

I lost 22 pounds on it in one month!

Took it for about 4 months and lost over 40 pounds after
Phentermine is the generic, I beleive. You can order it in 3 months supply and it is cheapest. The only bad thing I have to say about it is that it WILL make you moody beyond belief!
105 pounds is definately not overweight
for someone who is 5'4". What was he smoking?
My vet told me kitty has to be over 3 pounds--sm
before it can be spade, but since most kitties don't get adopted as soon as they are 6 weeks old, I think that is just a standard on the SPCA site you visited. I waited until my little girl kittie was 6 months old before I had her spade. If the SPCA is specifying six weeks after adoption, it is probably because they are offering some kind of discount if it is done by then.
I do Leslie Sansone's Walk Away the Pounds...

The tapes are really easy, just walking in place, kicks, knee lifts, and jogging moves.  A 15-minute "walk" equals 1 mile.  So I type for an hour or so, then do a mile, type for another hour or so, then do a mile.  It actually makes me type faster.

I too gained (30 pounds) when I quit 2 years ago. sm

What worked for me is the CORE weight watchers plan (no counting of points).  It is amazing how much you can eat and feel satisfied.  It is really not a diet but more a way of eating healthy.  It isn't Atkins or South Beach, as you get to eat carbs such as ww pasta, potato, brown rice etc.  It is very healthy and satisfying.  The weight just fell off of me 2 to 3 pounds per week.  I decided I couldn't see my self 'dieting' or counting points for the rest of my life, but I could live with eating healthy.  This plan is the BEST I ever tried, and believe me, I tried them all.  Good luck with losing the weight.  It is great that you are smoke-free now.

I think I'm pretty bright and pretty good, too, but
I am not a CMT. I am a medical transcriptionist who enjoys her job very much (most days). I have chosen not to pursue certification simply because I cannot afford to do so. I believe the certification is a nice thing to have, but I don't believe it is necessary for employment or for excellence in my job. If you can afford it, go for it. If you can't, don't feel too bad. You can still take pride in and do a very good job without it.
Yes I tried Trimspa and like Anna Nicole lost 55 pounds. nm

Yes, I lost 42 pounds on LA Weight Loss, but gained back 50 a little more than a year later . .

I was on the program for approximately four months and lost 40 pounds.  The weight did come off really fast.  At the time I was a member, there was a rebate if you kept the weight off for one year.  It sounded good, but you had to buy the supplements for the entire year, which by the end of the year added up to a few thousand dollars.

In any case, after I finally lost the weight, I got pregnant with my fourth child.  I am now trying to lose the 50 pounds that I gained while pregnant, but my metabolism seems so much slower now.  The weight isn't coming off nearly as fast as before. :(

It depends. The side effects can go either way - weight gain, weight *loss*... sm
Or no weight change at all, but maybe some other unpleasant side effect. Or you might have only mild side effects, or none at all and it's like a miracle cure for you. ;o) Everyone is so different, you never know until you try a med. for yourself.
POLL: Productivity gain using your expander and what expander you use.
Guess I need to make it work harder.
I recently lost 20 pounds. That means I lost 80 sticks of butter.

Well, this is just pretty much par for the
course for MQ. Guess they never heard the saying "If it's not broke, don't fix it." I'm sure the underpaid tech people will fix it soon.
But they have such a pretty name...
Isn't that the main thing to look for?
pretty much just what they are- I know nothing

How are they like CD's, are they better, worse?  Basic info.  I've googled it, but still not sure.

Pretty is as pretty does.
and your not looking too good here.
pretty....
Thank you for reading my post and taking it the way it was written.

Some others on this board twisted what I said - as if I was saying "everyone is doing it" by citing the fact that hospital staff are under the influence of various substances - drugs (legal as well as illegal - although someone took it to mean marijuana), alcohol, glue sniffing, aerosols, etc.

Nurses and doctors have the highest percentage of addiction of any professionals - there are many factors that go into, but it is merely a fact, not an accusation or finger pointing, just a fact.

Pretty!
Very nice!
Pretty sure you have to pay for that.
Which makes it even sadder. That she paid for such a poorly worded post.
I am pretty sure I know where the ad came from
These are usually meger start-up places who think they can get by by offshoring and will find out very quickly how bad the work is going to be.  I see these all the time and am pretty adept at stealing the offshore business after the client gets a taste of reality.  :)
Pretty much the same way (sm)
This doc dictates on cassettes, but he only turns it in when he has filled up the tape. I've asked him to turn it in everyday. The only thing they want on their reports is the transcription date, which is what their accreditation requires. Their accreditation also requires a TAT within 4 days, so when he dictates from Wednesday to Wednesday, and I get the tape on Thursday, he is out of that 4-day range. The transcription date is sometimes a week or so later than the actual test date, which is what he doesn't want.

Thanks for the tips!

I do it now, pretty much always have sm
Right now, it is a FT employee with benefits and a PT IC well paid (10 cpl) as well as some hourly QA work. As I have said many, many times, I am not a good sitter. Actual my fanny is in the chair, hands flying time is for full time is probably 5 to 5-1/2 hours, perhaps 6 a day. PT job is much the same, can't sit still probably only work 3 hours a day. The longest I ever sit at a time is the QA stuff where I will sit straight for the 1 to 2 hours that is going to take me.

My income is full time money, about $900-$1000 a week and I don't eat, drink and sleep MT. My income is going up a bit now because I gave up cigarettes and I don't stop to go out and smoke. I take breaks, but the breaks are much shorter and I am faster and faster on the keyboard.
Pretty much the same. SM
Some things the programs I've worked with seem to learn quickly, some they seemingly never learn. (It may be that VR work attracts passive-aggressive-type computers. After all, no computer can really be THAT dumb!)

Regarding making all those corrections, tho, use your expander. If yours won't record the Keystrokes you use to make all these corrections, get another. Let it delete "q.i.d." and type in "4 times a day" for you. Let it break one sentence into two for you. Let it type in a discharge diagnosis heading and then copy the admission dagnoses under it for you. Have it replace the phrases the computer will not learn with the correct versions for you. While you get paid for it.
That is pretty much the only way to use them
now because you need ULD and no phone company offers true ULD.  I worked with a company where I had to use a C-phone and I had digital phone service through my cable company.  I no longer work for the company, but I used it without any problems whatsoever.
Pretty much.
Soon MTs will be nothing more than minimum wage workers.
This is pretty much
what I do. I make them for everything (plus individual words). Maybe because of the original way I was taught to make Expanders (using all consonants), I have had to alter my pattern in numerous ways (and now include vowels).

I typically use more of the 2nd word when doing two-word combos, like, ihrn for inguinal herna and hdss for heart disease, but I do have others where I do the reverse because of feel or whatever.

I continue to alters my patterns, shorten them and alter some because of letter combo comfort.

I guess it's just difficult when the goal is to have them for "everything" but not being close (because how many endless combos would there really be?), so then I'm not sure if I have one for certain things or not. And given the fact that there are umpteen ways to say the same phrase, I often would swear I had made one for a certain phrase ... but then, a word or two was different.

My thought was maybe it would be better to disregard certain types of phrases/words, and that is why I asked for examples of things you all do not make them for.

When I do the same account or two more regularly, I have a lot less problems. When switching it up, I fumble more. I suppose there is a certain flow and type of speaking with each account and various dicators, and alternating too much disrupts the flow of my autopilot.

Thanks for all the responses. If anyone thinks of anything to add, I will be checking back again.

Thanks!
Actually pretty much anywhere
It's usually over by where the Boost and stuff are carried, Walmart, Walgreen's, Target, even some supermarkets. It tastes good too.

Let me know how it works for you!
