I respect YOUR opinion. Please respect mine!
I don't think there is any need for mud-slinging. The ONLY thing I contribute to AHDI is the recertification fee. The rest are expenses that are deductible to keep me recertified. Again, that's MY choice.
If she has earned it they have to pay it is

what I said.   There has to be something in writing or something inferred that there are benefits of paid time off/vacation and if so then she has to be paid.   If there is no such understanding then you cannot expect payment.

I've been through this same situation.

If you earned more than $600.00 for the year, then the

company is required to send you a 1099 form and it must be postmarked by 1/31.

my accountant explained this but I cant remember the reason we dont get the full amount of credit and can you tell me what percentage we dont get credit for.
She doesn't even know if she earned the bonus because
she doesn't know what the bonus was based on is everything that I've read in this situation. The co said there would be a bonus, but she has no idea for what or how much. Sounds like the company put out a little snip of info, got the person to work her butt of to "qualify" when there possibly was not a bonus even to begin with.
Still waiting: $60 earned or received? nm

I am making in 2005 what I earned in 1995

Like you and so many others, I have watched my wages as both an IC and an employee go down, down, down.  I worked for a company owned by an MT.  She paid very good wages but sold the company to an Indian company, who got rid of all the Americans except for a few who would accept very low pay.  It's funny...clients want 100% accuracy but they don't want to pay for it.  They agree that they can't just randomly pluck people off the street to do MT, that they have to hire experienced or trained people.  But they don't want to pay us for our experience or our training.  I am doing my last MT job. I have my bachelor degree almost completed and I'm outta here.  The lack of respect for MTs, from employers, other MTs, from offshore companies, from clients, from AAMT, is so disheartening.

Question on this, do you have to pay taxes on this as earned income?
I live in a state where we have income tax in addition to federal. Each year on the money we get back from state, we have to claim as income the next year so we are taxed, get paid, taxes on that, get paid, well you get the idea. I hate to get money and have $$$$ shown as earned income, I am way up there in paying taxes now and don’t need additional taxes on me.
profession not based on $ earned, but on specific criteria...sm

"I definitely have made tons of money in my own business.  Sounds like low self-esteem on the posters below, unhappy, depressed."

Well, lots of people make "tons of money in their own business," i.e. hookers  and drug dealers - doesn't mean it's a profession. A profession is done by professionals - think law, medicine, teaching. MT is just a job. That being said, I'm still far from unhappy and depressed! LOL but it's still just a job. The body of knowledge to do MT is so far from what is considered a body of knowledge (again think law) it's not even in the running. Even a checker at Jewel has a specific body of knowledge. It's the comparison that counts, not the existence. Many people are uninformed about what profession actually means. Do some research, you'll see what I mean.

Hasn't happened yet.

Has your pay already been cut by MQ?  I am an IC for MQ and this has not happened to me yet.  Is it a proven fact that this is going to happen or just speculation?

Very little hasn't changed...sm

since the beginning of time. It's not just the 'religious fanatics' who have changed. The human race has evolved in their beliefs since Adam and Eve. Christians don't follow the rules of the Old Testament per se, because Jesus fulfilled the laws. There aren't too many religions who still make animal sacrifices. A woman who is having her period is no longer considered unclean. Pork is not considered taboo in the Christian faith, and Catholics aren't limited to eating only fish on Fridays. There were religions who believed in human sacrifice, but I doubt that goes on very much any more.

People have evolved in that we no longer believe the world is flat. We don't believe you are going to get AIDS by touching someone who has it. We no longer believe that a woman who is having her period can't go swimming.

Who believes the same things they believed when they were six? How different are your beliefs than your parents? Not just about religion, but about anything.

She hasn't filed for a divorce yet -

Because the state she lives in does not recognize legal separation, she had an agreement drawn up by her corporate atty.  This agreement handed the house (quick claim deed) and business over to her, while her "future ex" draws his pension and moved to warmer weather (California).  This all happened when things were friendly. Now she wants a divorce so she can get on with her life (with her new beau she is buying the house with).  BAD idea since she has not filed for a divorce.  Anyway, thanks everyone.  I think I'll be visiting her in jail.

It hasn't been allowed since HIPAA. MT companies who outsource...
get away with it because they don't tell their clients, and internet wav file capabilities enable them to do so without anyone knowing. Some policy and investigation needs to be enforced to stop this. I say start slapping companies who outsource with huge fines and see how long we have to deal with outsourcing problems. What gets me most is "I can't even get a copy of my own medical record from my doc unless he has a release of medical records form signed by myself on file in my chart, but a doctor can dictate John Smith's medical history, send it to a company who in turns sends it out of the country and back here! Ridiculous.

It hasn't been called AAMT in a long time. nm

But, in our case, 'credentialling' hasn't made ONE IOTA
In fact, just the opposite has happened. It's just a pocket-lining scheme, and nothing more. We had plenty of respect and a decent income back in the day when we had no 'CMT' scam going on. It isn't being credentialled I have a problem with - it's the group claiming that it's 'necessary', who is trying to get it mandated, and who would ultimately PROFIT IMMENSELY if that were to come about. But would WE profit? Nuh-uh. It hasn't made being an MT (credentialled or not) a better or more rewarding career, and if fact, just the opposite. So I SERIOUSLY DOUBT that if they were to succeed in making it mandatory that only CMTs could work, that those MTs would derive any viable benefit from obtaining the title. Most likely things would just get worse.

You have to manually cap with shift key or run a macro at the end of the report. You can also hit shift+f3 to change the case to upper.
With all due respect..

Situations are different for everyone. My kids are practically grown now, but I did stay home with them for the first years of their lives and then went back to work, your way is not the only way and you really should not be so judgmental.

Yep, I used to listen to Dr. Laura also. Thing is, Dr. Laura sometimes preaches one thing and does the other.. divorce... taking her kids to work with her and using "hired help" when SHE needed to, to WORK.  In other words:  Dr. Laura is not a saint. (I do understand her child advocacy stances though..) it's just that things are different for everyone, not so black and white, cut and dry.  It really isnt nice to "preach" to others about how they should live their lives.

Women have a lot on their plate these days.  Live and let live for goodness sake, intead of trying to make people feel guilty about their choices.

It gets about as much respect as being an MT!
I wonder what computer crash course they had to take to be "professionals!"

LOL!
Now I know why MT's will never get the respect...sm

they deserve. Reviewing a job description at work for a transcriptionist, not medical but still a position that requires "extensive knowledge of procedures and complicated data". The job is basically considered a data entry clerk and the pay level is the lowest-graded job I have seen out of the 5000 jobs here. Exactly why I left MT, truth is the government, as well as many/most industries, consider the work nothing more than data entry.

Sorry, just ranting, but it ticked me off when I saw that.

With all due respect...
going to one of "the AAMT-approved schools" won't get you more money. As far as I'm concerned, it's how you do on the screening tests and your first few samples. You could have gone to school in an outhouse for all I care but if you can do well on the screening transcriptions, I'll hire.

Confused/mistaken. I've never heard anything like that before. Sounds a little bizarre. You might want to look it up on a grammer site. Here's one:

http://www.grammarbook.com/punctuation/quotes.asp

Note the first sentence:
*Rule 1 - Periods and commas always go inside quotation marks, even inside single quotes.*

Maybe you're confusing quotation mark use with commas and periods vs. their use with question marks, exclamation points, etc. where it depends on the material being quoted. That's where most people get confused. But with commas and periods, they always go *inside* the quotation marks. Always.

I've heard that the British quotation mark rules are the opposite of ours (meaning they put commas and periods *outside* of the ending quotation marks), but that's not the English rule, and I don't *think* it ever has been. So unless you went to school in England... ;o)

Your job sounds like prison, or the military. There are good jobs out there. I've worked jobs that have a 12-hour frame to get 8 hr in; currently i have 24 hours to get 8 in. You deserve better mom!!
We MTs get NO respect.
We're a dime a dozen.  We're not paid what we're worth, we're expected to sit and wait for work, and we're expected to adjust our schedules according to the work.  What about our families?  What about any semblance of a social life that we (used to!) have?  I'm looking to get out of this field altogether.  Those of you who still love it, I envy you.  I've fallen out of love with this industry long ago, but kept chugging along because I thought there was nothing else I was qualified to do that would make me any money.  Well, I'm at the point that I'll work 2 jobs if I have to, as long as I enjoy them and they pay well.  I need benefits, so 1 job will have to provide health insurance....other than that, I'm open to new horizons.
With all due respect - I go to several web boards, SMT, and SM

the AOL boards. This is the only one where I read so much about dissatisfied MTs. Oh, once in a week or so you'll hear something about VR or EMR, but mostly, the people in other places are still excited about being MTs, proud of what they do, certainly not talking about working fast food.

There's lively discussion about home stuff, hobbies, and kids, but I don't hear many people at all saying they can't make a living at this.

I wonder why that is? Serious question.

Maybe if they shows some respect
There are plenty of good MTs out there who are constantly getting robbed by the poor pitful management people you are defending. They ship our work overseas, leaving me without work which takes money out of my hands. They force us to take on bad accounts that they committed to and have to lie about because they are so bad (bait and switch) and I can't get my lines strictly because of poor management, unsympathetic management, unprofessional management. I would love to stay with the same company, but I'm forced to leave because I have bills to pay and management does not give a xxxxx about that.
