I agree. I'd skip the school SM

altogether. It might take a while to find a training position doing MT, but not nearly as long as the school, and nothing matches actually doing the work to learn. As suggested, I would take--and nail!--a terminology course at the very least. I started with on-the-job training, but I took anatomy and physiology courses in night school. True, the labs spent hacking up various parts of a cadaver with nursing and premed students and studying tissues under the microscope were overkill for what we do, but I definitely recommend skipping the expensive trade school and taking courses at a local college, or on line perhaps?

POLL: Home School vs. Charter School vs. Public School vs. Priv ate School...
Pros and cons of each too. I have two little ones that will be starting school soon and I would like opinions on all. Thanks in advance! :)
I agree. As soon as my son goes to school..sm
I will be going back to school for nursing. I figure I have about 2 or 3 more years left in this business and I have been doing it for 10. I am almost 40 and have no retirement and do not even have insurance for my family, do not have any kind of vacation...and the list goes on and on and on.

But, I have been able to stay home with my kids instead of puting them in daycare.
I agree. When my DD was in school band, I was better SM
about remembering Memorial Day, as she has to march in several parades. Now, it just seems like it is another day for everyone to drink.
I agree and should go to med school to thin the herd...
Thankfully, most of the residents I have transcribed for do an excellent job. Maybe the time will come for the lazy ones to retire!
you were able to skip
I have worked for MQ for 10 years. Started with them after 10 years of ESL experience. I got 3 cents more a line when I started with them than the local company here paid. I was never able to skip any report. Transcribed what I got, I did! I agree with previous poster about getting paid for experience. Experience is what counts in my book! I CAN transcribe the ESL dictators. I SHOULD be paid MORE for those reports. If I spent all day doing dictation that was perfect - clear, good speakers, no backing up, waiting, etc., I would make a killing in the money department. But, having to spend all day transcribing ESL, whose dictation gets worse by the day, I make nothing. I am making too little for way too much effort. I got the phone call the other day. They left a message on the answering machine. He was so bored as he read from his script! I could tell him as much as he told me in the message. What a waste of money for MQ to do this. Must have been a business expense.
4 yo Papillon - Mr. Skip
I call him a Dat - a dog-cat combo.  He has a wide vocabulary of human words that he knows.  He's particularly responsive to the words cheese burger and pizza.
Is this an every 3 second type skip? s/m
I get many files from different places and it seems from one client in particular, sometimes I will get a 3-second skip on files.  Once the skip starts, I have to close the file, close Start/stop, delete the file from my system and then re-download the file.  This seems to take care of the problem, but some days it doesn't.  I have no idea the reason why, but this is just what I do.
Unfortunately, CS seems to be the easiest debt to skip out on
You'll get into more trouble if you bounce a $25 check. I have used one of those private agencies because my ex had moved out of state and once that happens, if the ex doesn't want to pay and moves around in jobs, you can pretty much forget about getting anything.

The private agency works a lot faster, but the contracts are very complicated and you are pretty much signing up for the life of the CS obligation; otherwise there has be nonpayment of CS for a year before you can end the contract. And yes they take a big chunk of money but at the time I thought it was better than getting nothing at all.

But in the end, once payments have been established, the private agency ends up filtering the payment through your local CSEA anyway.

I think your best bet is to use some kind of locator service and if you can get a good address provide that to your local CSEA.

I wish they had an "America's Most Wanted" for deadbeat dads/moms. It's amazing to me that it is seemingly so easy to stop paying, change jobs, and just not be found.
Skip the games but here's an idea sm
My friend had a baby shower. The invite asked everyone to bring a pack of diapers to be entered in a $40 gift certificate for Applebees. She left with a HUGE bag filled with diapers. That was the game if you want to call it a game.
Not worth the trouble - skip it
Create a new tradition with your kids.
If they're vegetarians, skip the dip.

My neices are both vegetarians. Check out Vegweb.com for tons of vegetarian recipes.

SCIP or SKIP protocol
Has anyone ever heard of SCIP or SKIP protocol? This is a surgeon talking about prophylactic antibiotics. I have found on the internet SCIP protocol for skin care intervention program but am not sure if this is reliable info. Does anyone know which way to spell this/what this is and have a source to back it up?

Easy enough to just skip over subjects that don't interest you? NM

Also, at times I'll skip a job due to length, not
If I know I've only got 30 more minutes to work and have to leave, I'll skip over a 25-minute long file, regardless of the ease/difficulty factor, so I like that we have the option. I can finish a few more shorter reports for the client that way whereas I might have otherwise logged off altogether. BUT, I also do my fair share of the hard ESLs and long files at the beginning of shift. I used to be 100% against skipping any files, but OTOH, if someone knows they can't do that ESL's work, maybe it's best for someone who CAN to take them on so the reports are more accurate. I would at least hope that the MTs have given it a good effort first though. I agree this might not be abused as much if MTSOs would pay for difficulty factor, though.
And supposedly they are to be fired for that on DQS. I bet they are. They break the report and skip
to the next one on DQS. I get it all the time and I report it and guess what, nothing happens to them but I figure they will hang themselves eventually. They inevitably drop off the account because they really cant do it anyway.
Skip the games - focus on the mom-to-be. I HATE going to those showers. nm

Just skip over it.. A little lively debate spices things up.

Actually, it is quite easy to skip jobs, and I work for a national. sm

Depending upon the account, just press the appropriate number on the C-phone, and *poof* you're at the next job.  In my case, I have no "proof" per se, but when jobs skip from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. then to 1 p.m., etc., and then it gets back to "normal" when you get to the non-ESL docs where I guess they stopped working.  it's not too hard to figure out that someone took what they wanted and left the rest.  It doesn't matter to me.  As has been stated, the MT who cherrypicks cheats himself/herself out of the chance to master everything and assure himself/herself of a larger pool of work.  That goes also for those who limit themselves to only certain work types.  Sure, we all have our preferences (I prefer admit notes and consults), but if you can do everything, then you're more likely not to be one of the ones coming here complaining of no work.

Just my opinion, and you know we all have one.  Happy Friday the 13th!   I have the weekend off for once, and it is actually beautiful weather here.  Yippee!

In Word I can't see my field boxes anymore that I use F11 to skip around to. Does anyone know ho
x
It means to skip the jobs in your work queue that - sm
are by difficult dictators, or have no line-count-bolstering templates, or require too much backing up, re-listening, sentence restructuring, or nose-in-reference time to get in your minimum lines. That's especially true if the employer doesn't weight the job's pay by difficulty. Most MTs voice disapproval of the practice, but sometimes an gal's gotta do what a gal's gotta do, in order to survive and make that next car payment, rent check, or grocery bill.
I did that with 2 kids with time mgmt and a high school girl who babysat 3 days a week after school

The cost of running a private school or any school is expensive....
Why do you think public schools are so run down and can't find good teachers?  Because the government and people to not put forth the effort or $$$$ to improve the educational system.
I find you do tend to skip maybe a word sometimes when you dont reread. I guess

your brain doesnt keep up or something.  I dont know what causes that.

The School of Hard Knocks is the best MT school
n
Skip it. No one cares. Either you're good on the test or you're not.

Skip Christmas Day and do drinks/snacks Christmas
Eve and spend a peaceful Christmas doing whatever it is you want to do.  If you're all of 47 years old you're evidently a slow learner  : )
Agree, agree, agree! Just listen to Benny Hinn..

he speaks perfect English, especially when asking for money!  Also, in my opinion, blanks should be left in the doc's dictation if not able to be transcribed, maybe then they will know that are NOT understood.  With QA fixing them, what need is there for them to care if we understand them or not?

We met in high school. My high school sweetheart
introduced us in a discussion over Ford versus Chevy versus Dodge. I used to race my Dodge Coronet with oldstyle 318 V-8 engine against the guys on the back roads and old highways. High school boyfriend had a Chevy truck. DH had a Ford Fairlane and later an AMC Javelin that just made me swoon. We didn't actually start dating until three years later, and my old high school boyfriend was a bit surprised at that since he introduced us.
I'm old school, but still know its 3/6

never went to MT school!
I have been doing this for 10 years now. I have a great job, great QA reviews and make great money. So what???
ol school
LL Cool J and caramel
been to school should have known, especially since they

basically had the words correct.   They were such common terms I don't know how anyone could have gotten through school and not had them at least 100 times.

Also doing one search on Google with the misspelled words would have probably turned up the answer.

going to school
Don't get discouraged - you will be able to use your MT skills in other areas to help with the cost of schooling. I'll be doing that too even if I have to work at a doctor's office part time as a receptionist! Just knowing I am making my way out of this field is something to aspire to!!!
Went to school and got my CPC

I have a national coding certificate.  I cut back on my MT work and got a job auditing physician records and scoring their documentation, then gave them feedback to maximize their reimbursement for the services they provided.  When I moved to a new area, the field for the type of coding I was doing had less of a demand, so I increased my MT work.  Now that I'm back in my "home town" I need to network and re-enter the field.  The money is just as good, if not better in some cases, with much better benefits, plus it is something you leave at the office at the end of the day.

By the way, I'm also from old school....sm

But I try to keep them all as simple as possible, one office with 2 surgeons has their own letterhead, so no problem there and they want things very simple.  All work for all also, besides getting printed by me, is put on a diskette for them to download on their systems for them to make whatever changes they choose.  All others with no letterhead, I supply all paper for (Xerox) and free delivery and pickup to all.  It is free for them, I pay someone to pickup/deliver.  That's how simple I want it, and I also want to bill out and get paid only once a month.

Everyone seems to like the idea, and it has been working for quite some time (10 years) and my theory is, if it isn't broken, don't fix it.  *LOL*

As for the national, my weekend work, each client has a CP (client profile) and some of the CPs are more difficult than the others and once in a GREAT while, I might forget SOMETHING but then I contact someone beyond who usually fixes whatever I messed up.

I went to school for
two years to earn a certificate in medical transcription (at a junior college) but so far no one has ever asked me if I was certified or if I went to school. I guess they didn't care as long as I could do the work.
School
I would not recommend if you actually want to get a job!
I am considering RN school...
I am almost 29 and have a daughter and am pregnant with another one. I've been going to school to get my RHIT but am bored with it and may go to RN school instead. I don't know... I feel too old to do it!
You should ask the school what they want.

Aug 14 for us here in Douglas County too.  We're neighbors!
Woo-hoo - 1st day of school!!! sm

Both kids survived it quite nicely.  That's 1 down, 179 to go!!!

All I can tell you is that I was thinking of going into nursing a few years ago, and a friend of mine who used to be a nurse discouraged me (strongly). It's not what it used to be - lots of paperwork, paperwork, paperwork, lots of long hours and tough shifts. She got her Master's and is now in nursing administration.
Old school
In the old days of 1" on top, bottom, 1" sides it was 54 lines, it was six lines per inch and using the common font of Courier 10 font which is now a 12 font.  But now fonts are all so different as well as margins but I used to get 62 ines per page when doing continuous chart notes.  One way to check in your font is to number 1, 2 3, 4 down a page and see how far you can go or check the line count is word but usually runs 54 to 66 again depending on margins, fonts, etc.
What MT school did you go to? nm

x

It might if you went to a school that
that is not well known or has a less than stellar reputation. However, if you went a school with a good reputation in the industry, you don't really need it. Companies know who prepares their graduates for entry-level positions or above, who produces graduates that need more assistance, and what programs do not even provide remedial knowledge.

Having your RMT credential might show an employer that you have the basic knowledge required to do the job, but you would need to weigh cost versus the benefit.
School is a must!
I respectfully disagree with the above poster. Not having gone to a quality school puts you at a serious disadvantage in today's MT market. Nobody wants to hire a newbie to work at home, UNLESS they attended Andrews, M-TEC, or possibly Career Step. That's because those schools really prepare you to work at home. I got a job right out of school (wasn't even job hunting yet - the company contacted my school, M-TEC, and hired me right before graduation). I have been very successful as an MT and started making very good money after my first year on the job. I wouldn't even think about trying MT without the right education. Even if you do get hired by someone, you will be so far behind it will take years to catch up, and you probably WILL only make 5 or 6 cpl. I was paid a reasonable cpl rate from day 1. My education was worth every penny I paid.
Re:school
"And yes, I have trained and QA'd Andrews and MTEC graduates and they have sucked eggs just as much as the next newbie MT."

I highly doubt the above response, but okay.

Also, MT profession is not losing their pay to new MT's as much as it is because of offshoring to other countries!

MT school

I graduated from CAI and got an offer to test with MQ the week I graduated.  I also have a friend who took the CAI course and got a job soon after she finished.  It covered all the word parts, abbreviations, and had lots and lots of real doctor dictations to practice.  There is nothing like on-the-job experience and I will be the first to admit I learn something new almost everyday, but I felt I was ready to work by the time I was done with the course.

Great post BTW.  I get tired of hearing about the "top 3" as if there is no other way to become an MT.

No School
I learned on the job 20 years ago. Approached a local transcription company, "bargained" a shift with them if they would train me. Worked there 3 years and then on to the home office. I now work for a wonderful company in QA/Auditing and I also learn something new every day. I continue to learn through articles, webinars, seminars, etc. There is no end to the knowledge one can have in this profession.
