Especially reading 100% of reports. I do quick read-through of 100% of mine, with listening if there's problems, and I figured my own "quota" based on my per-hour pay, but that's for keeping myself accountable and on track, making sure I'm as productive as I can be, nothing else.

Its the sentence, "proves that they can produce more than the vets." Its not about production, its about knowledge.  Now your statement here, "I was considered good enough to get the brand new doc that was extraordinarily picky with his documents, and I was given the two PAs that no one else wanted to touch." That's what should be rewarded and good for you!  IMHO that's what being a good MT is all about.


I can understand where you're coming from. When I was a newbie myself back in the 70s, I was complimented by the docs and got to do the hard dictators. I wasn't fast though.  Of course, back then production wasn't really a consideration, we got raises on our quality. 


I'm sure you can produce circles around me, my thumb is numb as we speak, but, no offense, you don't have my knowledge.  In the production-driven industry MT is now, your high production is rewarded, my knowledge is not. That is my experience which is probably hard to grasp for today's MTs like yourself, having been brought up in the production-crazed MT world of today.  Be that it may, I'm proud of my knowledge and sick to my stomach that soon all of it will only be worth minimum wage as I get to do VR for 3.5 cpl.


I agree, easier but I worked on production years ago
as I think the original poster Patti also did and I was, shall we say threatened 1 time for being cutoff from production and having to do paper work because of the fact I out typed the other transcriptionists there- it can be done, I have done it working on production, now is more simple time and I also like using goggle, etc. When working like that years ago I never took the time to read over each report- waste of time- do not do that now. I have been in the situation 2 times in my career of being told how much I make, etc and most did not like. One hospital I worked for in the 80s only had 2 transcriptions for the entire 300+ bed- we never used outside work, kept things up and yet told look what we make! I see lots of people who only do this job so they can stay at home. I stand by my original posting.

I do agree with you that in the work force, people with no children should get some extra incentive of some sort; I did not have my only child until later in life and I understand your position as I often picked up the slack too, so I dig it.  However, I have excellent reading comprehension and I don't think she was expecting preferential treatment. With the divorce rate in this county higher than 50%, you are claiming that the MAJORITY, bred with losers.  Divorce happens, losers or not.  I have to get off here while I still have a job.

OK. Our Indian -- friends -- who are ever so kind to transcribe for us Americans whilst we are asleep -- all for the good of the patient, of course, supposedly make 1 to 2 cpl, right? That's the quote I always hear. Then, their work goes to a senior MT to proof, who also must make say 2 cpl. Then the work always goes to a 3rd layer, a junior QA person, who again must get at least 2 cpl, but let's just say 2 cpl for the sake of argument. Then the work goes to the senior Indian QA person, who must, for Pete's sake, make something more, so let's say 3 cpl. And I assure you, they need that many layers and still the work can be ludicrous. Really, really too bad to imagine. They are OK with the medical lingo, scary enough. But it is honestly the english stuff that they just cannot master. So, by the time the job has gone thru 4 people, or even 3 people, you're up to 8 cpl anyway, so what the heck is the savings for US companies? Is it just on bennies? I don't get it, and I know it must be me being ignorant. Can somebody kindly explain what the incentive is for this?
I only agree with you on one thing and that is
the part about scaring. Canada has news completely different than here, not a scare thing every time you hear the nightly news. I am not in submission, however. Sure I am scared when planes smash into buildings, sure I am scared when there is a show down between us and Russia, sure I was scared when Kennedy died- most people were then, terrified in fact because all thought this meant war would happen. I remember it well. Scared when King assinated, thought our city Atlanta would be in riots, now there but other cities did. Don't think you are as old as I am because if you were, think you would be a little more understanding of how people can be scared. I am far from submissive, though.

going overboard. as much as minorities should be considered equally for jobs, education, etc., so should it be for all...not just minorities. ESLs are not the only ones that help keep MTs busy. transcription work can come from ALL dictationists, not just ESLs. Standards should be the same for all. Either lower them for the *white americans* or raise them for all others. I am not a racist and I do not defend one against the other, but it should be equal...across the board. That used to be the *American Way*, INCLUDING diversity.

Help, I'm paid hourly and expected to type 10 dictated minutes per hour monthly average, really short reports and difficult dictators.  I'm being called in because only typed 8.9 minutes per hour last month.  My supervisor states the 10 minutes per hour standard is fair.  Does anyone have any feedback on this?

I didn't mention that I was doing Radiology reports.  It sounds like 10 minutes per hour maybe is realistic.  Number of reports can really vary depending how long they are.  Of course, if they are only 1 or 2 seconds long, it's impossible to get 10 minutes per hour.

I only wish my rad reports were little ditties. For the rad I typed this weekend the rad averaged 1 to 1.5 minutes per report and every second was dictated and he nevers says the same thing the same way twice---Arrrghhh

I'm fortunate in that I live in a small town and my vet is very good and very reasonable. Doesn't try to persuade you to have anything extra done but will do things if you want them done.

No way. They are on a quota system. sm
They get paid a certain hourly pay for QAing so many reports per hour, no matter how many blanks, and they have to keep up.  They do not get paid by the line.

I agree with Tinks....no such thing as a 65 character GROSS line....unless
you just so happen to type 65 characters during on that particular line. LOL

A gross line can be a full typed line or it can be one word on a line to complete a sentence that began on the prevous line. But it gets counted as an entire line.


I too have struggled to meet quota since (sm)
starting DQS, but nothing has been said to me about it.  But if they do ask why, you better believe me, I will give them more than an ear full! I hate working and feeling like if I don't meet production, I'm gonna lose my job or something.  This job is already stressful enough between the bad dictators and feeling like I'm getting my lines ripped off since DQS, I mean come on, they need to give us a break!
MQ-Amherst office/quota

I work out of the Amherst office and have gotten a letter about not making quota for insurance purposes--HELLO--I can not make my lines each pay period if I have no work. I have called and emailed the office numerous times explaining the lack of work, been given more accounts, and yet run out of work but yet the hiring of newbies continues and from what I gather from the posting, all of Warminster is now in Amherst also. After reading the SEC comments on MQ and the money spent on lawyers, contract buy outs, loss of clients and lowser rates, I wonder where we will all end up. With the Atlanta office closing on 9/1/2005, I wonder how many more offices are closing between now and the end of the year. The closing of offices was one of the things mentioned in the disclosure, sorry, the conslidation of offices, termination of office employees, telecom cuts--all ways for MQ to save money. I guess you would have to after spending $18 million dollars on lawyer fees already and none of the lawsuits are settled.

I used to have a 1750 lpd quota and made it -sm
but that was back in the good old days of WP51, PRD+ and clinic work with long notes.

In the account I used to do in Word with InstantText, I could do 1200-1500 lpd depending on the doctors I got.

Now I'm on a radiology account with a slooooow platform that I hate and I can't even make 1200. Sigh. Why is this industry going backwards???
How hard is it to get a 150 lpm quota with itype?
I start tomorrow with a company that uses it and I'm worried about using an unfamiliar platform.  thanks in advance for your answers.

Her point is that IF she gets her work (quota) done in 6 hours - sm
does she still have to work the full 8 hours she is scheduled for. She is not "stealing" unless she is paid hourly and is being paid for 8 hours but only working 6. As for knocking off early, it depends on the company, some don't care as long as you do your daily minimum, others want the full 8 hours regardless of how many lines over you go from the daily minimum (as long as you achieve it)--this means more $$ of course. I work for PT for 2 companies with no line minimums, which I love, and no set schedule to boot. This is hard to find though. I have a very wacky schedule and need this though, very hard for me to commit to a firm schedule due too many external factors here, every week is different, some crazy, some calm. So if you have a pretty set routine you should be able to handle a schedule....just find out beforehand if it is carved in stone or not (get it in writing). Good luck.

QA works on quota. Frankly, they don't try that hard, either, to fill in the blanks.

Before you get too excited, most hourly QA jobs have a line count quota too.
so if you had trouble getting quota as an MT, it could be that you might not make it as a QA either.
You're expected quota depends on whether you are paid hourly or per line. SM

I'm paid hourly and I was told the requirement was 50 or more reports per day.  I've never worked QA per line, but I'm sure their line quota is pretty high, at least 2000 or better per day, as you get credit for every line in every report you QA.

In the "old days" of dictation on vinyl belts, the quota was do to 15 minutes an hour. sm

To me, it seems realistic, but then again, each situation is different.  On account I know, I can usually do 30 minutes an hour, although being money-oriented and paid by the line, I usually gauge things by lines.  I do 250-300 lph, but those little dinky reports ARE an irritation -- no argument there -- hardly enter the header info and *poof* the dictation is over.  Would be hard to make a decent line count that way.


But ... surely your employers understand there are variations on such things.  Maybe you average 8.9 one month and 12 the next ... I would think it would even out.


Anyway, i'm into that gray zone where I know nothing about, but I wish you good luck.  To me, in the days when I was supervisor, if I knew someone was doing the best they could do, that was all that mattered to me. 


Ebonics: Not a black thing or white thing. (sm)

I don't think there's any cause to get upset or defensive here.  Look it up on line...even colleges are offering courses in Ebonics!  ...well of course they are more sociology-type courses, but still, people are PAYING to learn about the why's and how's of this "other" language.

 I have been transcribing for over a year now and I STILL cannot produce 1200 lines a day.  Sometimes I have to work 8 hours to do 900.  What is my problem?  My account manager says most transcriptionists can do 1200 lines in 6 hours.  Please tell me how you do it!!!  I have developed a good Expander vocabulary...

There are a lot of variables in this issue.  I know when I have op notes or certain ESL dictators and lots of discharge summaries, my line count drops tremendously.  If I have ER notes which I love, I can do a lot more.  What are your report types?

I have two accts that i can type at least 500 lines per hour!
Production QA
I was looking into a QA/editor position being paid per line.  (5 cpl)  Does anyone have any suggestions on whether to look into this more?  I've been a Transcriptionist for 10 years and I am interested in a different position than typing now.  Any advice would be very helpful.  From what I understand (??) it is US-based MTs with 100% read throughs on average ESL accounts.

I'm sure with your 15+ years of experience and your speed you will do very well pay-wise.  Be sure your internet research skills are honed and this will make you even more successful.  You may want to try and find an account that is all cardiology or all operative notes if you really want to hit the ground running.  Good luck to you! 


Please try doing more ops. Your production SM
will increase because the doctors dictate faster and some will say the same thing over and over. You can make samples of their standard reports.

Speaking of samples, can your supervisor send you some? Ask to be sent specific op reports such as ob and ortho. Those are the ones the doctors say the same stuff all the time. Try mastering one specialty at a time.

You will be doing yourself a favor by learning to do more report types.

I know this isn't answering your original question, but I would really like to encourage you to try them. I know you can do it! :)
I am on production too s/m

does anyone ever think of that?  Everyone keeps saying we are paid to fill in their work, but does anyone ever consider that I get paid by how many jobs I do in a day?  Filling in 20 blanks on 1 report versus filling in 1 blank on 20 reports makes a difference to me.  Nobody ever thinks a lot of us get paid just like you do, by how much work we produce.

How long does it take to get up to 1200 lines?  I've been reading the posts on cafemt.com and I can't believe some of those people get 2000 lines.  How do they do that?  Any suggestions would be great.  thanks.

i average 12-1400 L/day but that is on a 6-7 hr workday. I do acute care, lots of chunk-type expanders, very few 'normals', mostly decent dictators. On days with more diffi dictators, too many short reports, etc, its good if i average 170/lph. i'm not that fast but i get up to 260 lph at times, yet average 200/lph. i've been at this several decades, but take more time than many (probably) to research something or verify accuracy too. i take lots of breaks too, so it stretches my day out. On the other hand, i have, in my years, seen some extremely fast typists, and people who can stay put in the chair a long time. if you have the knowledge, stay put and build momentum and are naturally fast, i can see being able to do 2000-2500 a day with quality. but maybe you burn out or stress your arm nerves too much in a shorter time.

Okay, you might have some good points but how come the majority of us, who loved our jobs and made great $$ on any and all of our accts are having the exact same problems, the exact same worries at the same time?

500 lines an hour are 12.5 pages! A page has usually 40 lines.
There are people who cannot even read so fast.
I bet all is Expanders and mormals.

Maybe you worked at one of those very rare places where they compensated a MT for her knowledge and expertise and not just her production.   


Also regarding production
None of us can compare ourselves anyway because there are so many factors involved in determining how many lines get done. Within my own accounts, mine vary up to 70 lph, and I swear I am working harder on the slow days!!
VR Production
Does anyone consistently edit 450 lines per hour on EXT VR? That is what I need to do to keep my salary the same and so far I am not even up to 300 lines per hour. Any suggestions to improve my line count would be much appreciated. Thanks!
Much better for me on production

I worked in house for about four months last year and went back home.  Hated the office politics crap, but I made significantly more per hour at home than I did in the office.  I was considered a newbie and so wasn't paid as much  hourly as the women who had been doing it for years.  Because I'm MUCH faster than they are, though, I make more than they do working from my home.


It all depends on your line rate and your speed, and what you think good money is.
