I had this exact problem with the ear phones I used when I was using tapes and a C-phone.  When I started working with an internet account I started using the Olympus dss player.  The ear phones with that system made all the difference.  The sound quality is so much better, but best of all no more sore ears.  By the way, you can buy these ear phones separately.
