Who has time to read books?

I'm too busy trying to juggle 3 jobs, and spending time reading a book has become a luxury I just can't afford.  Can really relate to the OP.

I keep hearing how great the economy is, and I'm starting to wonder if that's simply just not true.

That should read "reference books."

ANOTHER POLL - favorite books - read more than once (sm)
Gone with the Wind, Roots, The Stand
You're joking, right? That was WWII, read your history books.
fdfd
Not the tapes, books and seminars I am talking about, please read....
I am referring to personal development materials by the likes of Zig Ziglar, Jim Rohn, Dale Calvert, Brian Tracy, Norman Vincent Peale and stuff like "Chicken Soup For The Soul" as well as inspiratoinal music.  I know Amway & Quixstar has bad reputations, but please don't put down the entire industry of network Marketing because of one company.  There are several wonderful companies out there.
I used windex wipes and my monitor is just fine. Read that somewhere in my books. nt

QA lady don't read books like Eats Shoots & Leaves, obviously
this is a great read for those of us who are "Punctuation Sticklers"!
Ask QA if she if anal- retentive is spelled with a hyphen! (This is the true test of a QA person).
I read that book as a young girl, loved it. Just bought
it for my 12 year old.  Fantastic book for younger girls that age!!!!!
You charge your kids to proof read their homework.
:}
POLL - Are you read for your kids to go back to school? (sm)
Yes and no is the answer for me.  I love them home with me (11 and 13), but am ready to have the nice quiet house to myself for work.
FYI I HAVE reference books, but in case you hadn't noticed, thing change a lot faster than BOOKS
I was simply asking for suggestions of other places on line that I might look for the latest info, especially considering that my work is on the internet, what the hell is wrong with trying to be more productive and efficient?!?! Good Grief!!
I prefer books. I'm kinda old school. I like to be able to write new terms in my books. I do

have Stedman's Medical Dictationary on CD and I do use it quite a bit, but that's more because the actual print dictionary is so darn heavy to pick up and look a word up!

I bought a wedge at Michael's for about 59 cents. Bought one for my SM
Lanier station so I could see the display and one for my keyboard.
Do little kids like caramel? My big kids won't even eat it! We make the basic Baker's chocolat

I never said you shouldn't have kids! Feeling guilty? I asked WHY you had kids.
You clearly stated in your post that you ship the kids off to camp all day, and they're TIRED AT NIGHT!!  You know exactly what you said.  You said it as a PERK - AS IN GREAT! They're gone all day, it wears them out, and so I shovel dinner in their mouths and off to bed!  You can try to paint it any way you want, but YOU SAID IT.  Again, I only hope your kids never hear you speak that way or write that way. Shame on you.  Why have kids at all?  Just another parent who has them, gets rid of them for day AND night, BRAGS ABOUT IT, and then calls ME wicked!  Give me a break!  Camp is fine - its WHAT YOU SAID AND YOU KNOW IT.  Your own words showed your heart. Period.
Kids are demanding and so is MT work. My question is how CAN you do this with kids, rather than how
When you have two young kids, 11 months apart, (like I stated they are now 4 and 5) and have been doing this since they were born with no help from their father and no family around, YES, the kids get neglected. Part time might work but living on one salary, part time, is not an option. How can you possible tell me that anyone with two young kids can stay at home and work a full-time, 8-hour shift, and still give their kids the attention they NEED. I dont care how good you are at multitasking and how great your organizational skills are. It is a very difficult thing to do. And I am offended by your post making it sound as if it is easy to do.

I do agree that it can depend on how well your kids behave and how well they are able to play on their own. But my kids were not able to play well on their own. They needed constant attention.

So please take the time to realize that there are people out there in different situations than your own.

Reading our posts should help you to understand that everyone has a different situation. I believe everyone should have the right to shares their experiences as it might benefit the original poster in her questions and concerns.

I dont think anyone should be bashed for taking the time out to write about their experiences. I dont usually come on here to argue but you really ticked me off with your post. And try reading the post correctly. I said next time around I would have put them in day care. What I DID do with them was set them up to an activity like art or put on a movie for them. Geez.
Stayed "because of the kids?" I say "leave because of the kids"
You're in no position to buy right now. Keep saving, keep paying down your bills, and for heaven's sake get rid of that dead weight of a BF you're living with. You can do better.
So, should I return the $75 (x2 kids) in music cards I got the kids for x-mas...sm
My son has been telling me about free music sites and I was very leary.  How do they skirt the law Radguy?
I don't have kids, but my Mom was from the "old school," and still had everyone, kids inclu

call her by her first name.  The little neighbor girl next door from the time she could speak called her Aggie (my mom's first name), and they were great buddies until the day my mom pased away.

I don't think there really is much in a name, but more in the respect you are given and the way you are treated.   Personally, I kind of cringe inside when someone calls me Ms. Anything or God forbid, "maam" (makes me feel like Methuselah!) ... I'm always just plain Merrie.  :-)

But, as someone pointed out, to each his own.  If you want to be addressed a certain way, you have that right, and people should respect that.  I'm glad you corrected the child ... hope it "sticks."

Please do not simply give up, kids or no kids!
Talk with a professional. This can be worked through if he really puts forth the effort and you participate. The right counseling can truly make your marriage even better than it was before, if BOTH parties are willing to be honest. Give it a try. Nothing to lose at this point and everything to gain!
In 12 years of MT'ing I've never re-read an entire chart. Edit/read as I type. nm

Yes, I read your post, and I just re-read it, and I've copied and pasted for you in case

you've forgotten your own words! Your post above is 100% different "flavor" to it, now all positive and cheery! Your first post was 100% doom and gloom every which way, including "raining on your parade", and "if you want to go forward"...God, sounds like she's talking about jumping into oncoming traffic! Here is your quote:

My first boss (the one who hired me as a new grad) gave me some words of wisdom that I haven't forgotten. She said that transcribing at home with small children NEVER works under any circumstance. Either the work will suffer or the parenting will suffer.

****

How can the word "NEVER" in caps be interpreted in any positive way? You took about 8 paragraphs to cover every aspect and completely dash this poor woman's dream.  I'm not blind, I'm not talking about day care at all, I'm talking about the total negativity of your original post! You know exactly what I'm talking about, cause you added some sugar to your second version! And that's much nicer than the first!

Oh I've read that site and continue to read it...sm
I agree...much motivation there. I have tried to quit numerous times in the past and did successfully quit when I was pregnant for the first time many years ago but I have never managed to summon up the strength or resolve to stay quit. Thus the "need" for a financial investment in my efforts. It somehow makes it more motivational to know that I have $$$ invested in this effort over and above the $$$ saved on cigarettes.
Who had time to read?LOL I only get a chance to read This Old House once in a while. (nm)

I didn't read the other posts but just read this
My daughter got pregnant at 17, said she wanted an abortion but BF didn't. I have a wonderful 2-1/2 yo grand daughter that I don't think I could live without...and now, guess what? I don't. I have custody of her. She was dropped off on my door, I got court ordered temporary custody and final custody hearing in a month.

I'm single with no family support. I had just taken a new MT job one month before this happened and they have been wonderful during my adjusting to being a mom again and I hope I can resume a normal schedule by next week.

I'm passing no moral judgments or giving moral advice. The situation is what it is. My prayers are with everyone involved.
Definitely an eye-opening read. Having my teens read it, too. nm

books
I usually stick with Stedmans, they are pretty comprehensive, but require a different book for each specialty. Tessiers is good too.
no books here
is it Grey Turners or Gray Turners sign?  thanks
no books here
I have books up the ying-yang for every specialty.  I am willign to sell you whatever you need.  Let me know.  Deb
books

John Grisham, Terry McMillan, Dean Koontz (sp), Eric Jerome Dickey.

which books
personally, unless money is no issue, i would wait until you are going to be hired, and find out which work types you will be doing. Then i would get as many of those main books, that would apply, new if possible and get used and/or older books to round out your library for less-needed subjects. I use on-line sites for looking up drugs, with partial words, etc, but still prefer a new drug book to CD form myself every year. i prefer the stedman's and my most used books are the GI/GU, cardiovascular/pulmonary and med/surg equipment. Abbreviations is a very used one as well. Good luck to you and congrat's on your scores!
books
Hi Angie, welcome to MT'ing. Preferences vary quite a lot and many people (not me) prefer to rely on only websites for their references or CDs. I do think Stedman's word books are very very popular however and use many of them myself (14 now). Keep in mind, that some jobs have a program to buy discounted books, and sometimes you may get some 2nd-hand off of ebay or the classified site here too. What books you need may depend upon what job you have, ie whether you do a lot of surgery or something specialized. I like the Dorlands dictionary better than the others. I prefer the Quick Look Drug Book and i have the 2nd edition of BOS (book of style), which is good if not necessary to be familiar with anymore. I also use a few websites frequently. Good luck, e/m me if you have further questions!
I have 25-30 books. (nm)

books
I know what she meant about spening $ every years for books. I have been doing this almost 9 years and I own no Stedman books at all and have a copy of an old med book 2004. I pull all my info off the internet.
I like my books the best.
I have a ton of notes written in them all.
Books
Any good MT knows how to use the internet as a resource.  I rarely open a book anymore.  Everything I need is on the internet, which is also faster.
Books

Some may feel this is dishonest, but honestly how are they going to know? Do you have to send them a picture of the book or a copy of the receipt or are they asking you to purchase this book through them? I have purchased many books over the years and have found the Internet as well as the many, many specific sites for anything I have ever wanted. Yes, I have one specific book for my specialty that I adore and use all the time for those weird names that I sometimes cannot figure out how to spell and it has helped, but with all that is available on-line I don't see how they can expect this of you. I too used to send away for the yearly drug book, but have not had to do so in many years since I started using the Internet. Good Luck and too bad for them.

Ref books
Hey there.  I do a wide variety of reports myself but there are only a couple reference books that I use.  First and foremost is the Stedman's Dictionary which I have the electronic version of.  I also use the Stedman's Equipment book a lot (again electronic).  I used to use the abbreviation book but can't find the CD to install on my new computer so I use http://www.medilexicon.com/ for abbreviations and codes.  Good luck!
Ref books
I have most of the Stedman's, The Medical Phrase Indes (which I very seldom use), The Surgical Work Book, BOS, Stedman's, Dorland's and Mobsy's Medical dictionaries, several drug books and Current Medical Terminology. Of all of those I only use a few, mostly Stedman's (depending on the specialty I'm doing). As I do this more and more, I use the Internet (making sure I can rely on the information found there). I think it depends most on what specialties you do.
Rx books
really like Drake & Drake
Saunders pharmaceutical word book, includes rx and generic with dosages. Contact: www.elsevier.com
don't remember the price.
Books
Does anyone know of a book store around Atlanta that sales reference books?  We used to have a store called Majors, but it's not here anymore, or at least I can't find it.
Buy books.
They are a very helpful tool in addition to the internet.  You can't believe everything you read on the internet or how it is spelled.
Yup, buy the books! SM
I've seen university education websites that have misspelled medical words on them.  Websites are created and maintained by humans like me and you.
DEFINITELY BUY BOOKS...(sm)
You will need research books. I personally have Stedmans. They have different specialities. I would not advise using the internet because sometimes things are spelled wrong on the internet. I have had it happen to me before. I have googled something and the spelling was wrong. Invest in the books. They are a little bit expensive, but this is your career.

Good luck!
Books to buy
I am looking to buy a BOS and book on pediatric endocrinology.  Any suggestions which are the best?
Here's one for the books.

I used to work in Miami - had my own service for many years.  One of my clients was a complete jerk, an OB/Gyn guy.  Okay... here's the deal... I went in to pick up my tapes (back in the day). The receptionist handed me three tapes. I went back to my office transcribed the tapes, printed out the work, took it back the next day.  When I arrived at the reception desk, I told the receptionist that I thought I heard a funny noise on the tapes, like someone scooting around in a leather chair - (if you get my drift).  She laughed and said "Oh yeah, I forgot to tell you yesterday.  Dr. Yada Yada told me that when I gave you the tapes yesterday, I was supposed to tell you, "Give these to (ME) with three fa_rts and my love."  How disgusting is that?.  Why do we have to put up with the mud they sling us?  I don't know if they will allow me to post this message, but I get so fed up with the slurs and disgusting things that these so-called professional physicians do when they dictate.  I am certain that you have all been there and done that.  How about a little respect.. Thanks for allowing me to vent.

If you're looking for Stedman's books - sm
Check out the equiptment forum - I have a set of 21, practically brand new books for sale.
Old laws are still on the books everywhere.

Most schools will not use corporal punishment any more period.  Believe me, there are some kids at our school that could use a good whack on the backside.  However, the school district then would have to worry about assault charges from parents.  Teachers aren't willing to risk their entire careers over a bad apple.

The 4th grade girl who brought a handgun to my child's nice suburban school got suspended for three days and counseling.  The 5th grade boy who brought a knife was led off in handcuffs by police, but he was back in school the very next week.  Now, he's an angry high school kid who has to take a special class with other "angry" kids.  The kindergartener who stabbed my kid's teacher in the face with a metal mechanical pencil last year wasn't removed from her classroom at all.  Instead, they brought in a "behavioral specialist".  It wasn't working, but I told the principal if my children were in any of these kids' classes again, I'd be sending all my kids to private school.

Ref books vs laziness
Cheapos and lazy
I stand by my criticism. There is a lot of misinformation on the net. Go ahead and hang yourselves. You are probably substandard anyhow.
