HMOs are ruining the health industry. Many fine docs have quit 'cause they don't like pencil-pushers telling 'em what to do. And you KNOW they're behind all that 'bottom line' BS that has driving our work offshore.

Glad to see the suit being brought against them, and hope that THIS time they get taken down.

As well it SHOULD! 'Bout TIME, too!

In this business time is ALWAYS money.
I wouldn't work under those conditions. Not every company is like the one you described.
As long as she is using her own equipment on her own time, it is none of your business what she does

Time to call the authorities and put this person out of business. no mess.

When I took a business trip one time, I came home to an immaculate house.
Then during the next few weeks, I couldn't find certain things like clothes, dishes, and items I kept on the counters. DH had decided to put all the dirty stuff out in the garage where the babysitter couldn't see it because he was embarrased by the mess he and the kids had made. There was mold and mildew on everything because he taped it inside boxes or stuffed it inside coolers, and he forgot to tell me about it.
True, but this has been a long time in coming. I truly hope something
For S.P., if you still check out this board, it looks like things are starting to happen. I hope you're still hangin in there! Keep the faith!
how 'bout this one?

I was reading through a patient's H&P and saw this:

"Patient is 73 years old, stool spry and lively."

Quite a visual, that was...

How 'bout going further than that, and
actually starting a UNION?
It could be 'USMTU' (United States MT Union', or maybe
'MTWA' (Medical Transcription Workers of America.) It'd be nice to actually put 'AMERICA' back in the name, (and Indians need not, and MAY not, apply.)
of course, I know 'bout as much as the docs do...sm

yeah, and that's why I'm here typing and they're out on their yacht somewhere, right?    But I do try to diagnose, even did this when I worked for a doc in the back office.  And sometimes I was actually right!

and soon new Sopranos...or how 'bout...sm

Extreme Home Makeover....that's my favorite show...

new Sopranos in March...new Deadwood soon, and new Carnivale soon and too bad they canceled SIX FEET UNDER but you can still catch the first 6 seasons in reruns.

take pictures to local jewlers. (Wouldn't recommend taking the original on first visits). ebay might also give you some information re: comparables.
how 'bout a lovely gift certificate...nm

Here's what I gots to say 'bout all diss stuff...
1. How long have you worked as a medical transcriptionist? 5+ years.
2. What certification have you received?  None.
3. What attracted you to pursuing a career in medical transcription?  The ad in the local paper and the fact I was penniless and willing to do anything...even if it was morally/legally questionable.
4. What type of environment do you work in (i.e. from home, physician’s office, hospital, other). Home.
5. What do you think are the most important skills a medical Transcriptionist should have? A sense of humor and ability to acquire sedatives easily.
6. Did some skills come naturally to you, while others required more practice?  Always been zippy on the keys and always been willing to learn or teach myself whatever I needed to, to get a job done.  I could use a hand with anger management 101 though.
7. In addition to transcribing medical reports, do you engage in other forms of business writing while on the job (such as memos, proposals, or progress reports, etc.) to clients, coworkers, or supervisors?  Nope.
8. What do you think is the most difficult aspect of medical transcription?  Continuing to do it despite it messing with your head knowing this line of work is steadily going down the globalization crapper.
9. What do you find to be the easiest aspect of medical transcription?  X about it.  :-D
10. As a medical transcriptionist, do you often need to collaborate with others to ensure that all the information in your reports is correct? I don't understand this question, so I guess I don't do whatever this is.

How 'bout we all shut up and go to work, loool

How'bout docs can't decide if patient...sm
is a He or She, goes between genders throughout the course of the dictation.  (Especially with ESLs, who really need to get their grammar straight, much less their enunciation).  Hate to send my loved ones to this doc...can't tell if it's a "he" or "she".

'Bout gave me a HEART ATTACK, but no pay cute here.
Somehow I dont think they would cut MTs' pay 30 percent without some sort of advance notice, done in such a way that people such as me, who didn't get any email, would find out about it on MT Stars. That's why I don't believe it.
Unfortunately it is legal..so yes it is business and they will continue with bad business practices

I hope this applies to companies like Medquist. I hope there
isn't a way they can get around it. I REALLY hope.
I made my business your business by posting and...
I totally respect everyone's opinions. It is easier for others on the outside looking in. That's why I pushed the "post reply" button yesterday. I trust my fellow MTs and I know the more I read from you all, the more confident I am becoming. I just need that final push, not from him though. I also wanted to let you all know that the physical abuse while I was pregnant was documented by my doctor and the hospital. I only wish I had known then that it is a felony to abuse a pregnant woman. I also photographed my face from a couple of weeks ago and told several people in my circle. I had such high hopes for us. Now...not so much. I'm not saying that I won't try to get him to church, but I realize that God can only do so much for someone who isn't listening. j

Working full time at home with small children is hard but part time works great
is almost impossible. You will either have to work when your spouse is home or for only a few hours during the day and then more when they are asleep. I work part time at home and my kids (2&5 now) have done very, very well. They are great kids, very well behaved, don't get into much. I stop working to check on them/give them some attention every hour or so while I work (5 hours each afternoon or so) and they get all my attention in the morning and at night. It has worked out beautifully for us.
Yeah, our choc. lab does that from time to time - makes it interesting!- nm

Cannot legally require you to commit time to them as an employee and then not pay you for that time.

full-time in office/ part-time at home
I currently work full-time in a physician's office and have started part-time online. My hope is to eventually go full-time online; however that will be done the road for a single mom with a son in college. My suggestion would be try to type part-time for a MTSO and see how that goes i.e work and money with a decision down the road for ultimately being home all the time. A guaranteed paycheck is always a necessity for me. Hope this helps.
I work part-time hours with full-time pay...
I made over 26,000 this year...
I work a full time and a part time, but not sure about 2 full-time...
My hubbie is disabled and I am the only one in my family working also, so I fully understand. You will not have a day off at all working 2 full-time as that is going to be the only way you will get in all your hours. I work one job in the mornings from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the other from 5 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. and do have off one day a week, but if I had to get in the extra 15 hours to make the other job full-time I am not sure how I would do that other than lose my only day off. Also, make sure you have your account specifics in front of you at all times because you will get yourself confused as to who is what and having notes will help in that area. Good luck to you, as it is possible, but forget about your house being clean, having any social life, etc. Feel free to email me personally if you just need someone to talk to, as I have been where you are and still am.
Maybe they will. Give it time. It takes time to set up links.
OSI, Precyse, etc tell us more.
full time, part time, statutory
newly defined full time...

newly defined part time....(which is an added classification)

I believe statutory just was not mentioned because there is nothing new about the definition of statutory.
full time/part time/statutory
The definition of full time is new.

There is a new classification called part time.

I believe statutory was not mentioned merely because that has not changed and they do not receive PTO/benefits.
I work 1 full-time, 2 part-time....nm

Is that really any of your business?
I would think that it would be very wrong of you to spread the information you found on Google while searching for the patient's name. Are you 100% certain that it is the exact same person you are transcribing? Even seemingly oddball names can be duplicated and how would you look spreading around gossip? Even if it is court-documented, it really is not your story to tell, IMO. I would love to know who is telling you to put it on the news. That is about the craziest thing I've heard in a while, although quite good for a laugh.
MT business
It depends on how large a business you want.  There are still some small accounts, (10,000 to 18,000 lines) per month that are still on tape that you can get.  Also the digital is not that hard but I will not pay for anyone to transfer my files, I can do that.   I do not have a phone in system but if someone were to ask I would probably start out with the ones that charge so much per minute and use their system until I knew for sure the account was staying.   Where are you located, have you networked with anyone in the area?  Are you set up for tapes as well as digital?  If you start out alone, you have no back-up, you have to do everything.  When you hire I/C's sometimes they are dependable and sometimes not.   You will not earn much off of them if you want to keep your accounts.   You will not be able to charge as high as the larger companies nor go after the larger accounts at first.   It is a fine line as to having enough help and enough work and that is why you hear the complaints all the time, "We have run out of work" as you have no control over how much or when a doctor dictates or if he takes time off.  But would I give it up, probably not as the money is good to me.   You can E-mail me with any specific questions, I have been doing my own small MTSO for over 20 years.   Been through it all, ups, downs, good times, bad times, and everyting in between.   My accounts have been with me from 6 years to 20 years so I feel that they are pretty stable.
Well I am sorry that you are using this business as sm
your excuse, but hospitals pay their people for holidays and if by chance you have to work them, they pay you time and a half.

I do not know why a business owner cannot take these things into consideration when setting up a business. This is a business just like any other business and if you have employees, those employees need to be given the same consideration as any other business. IC status is different, but I find using the nature of this business as an excuse just a little weak.

A good business head would enable you to provide benefits for your employees and if you have already made up your mind it does not, then I think probably it is because maybe you need someone else to do that figuring for you.

I am not being mean in saying these things, but even small business owners I know are able to work it out that a holiday is a holiday (whether you have to work it or not) and an employee needs to be compensated in some manner. To me, there is no excuse for not doing so.
new business
My opinion would be to let them either work at home or at the company.  I prefer to work at home, but some people may not.  As far the pay issue--when I started doing transcription I made .06 cpl and I think that is a fair rate.  Hope I helped
This is really none of my business, and I know that,
but the more I read of your story, the more absurd it becomes to even think of staying with this man.  I'm truly sorry.  I know how hard it is to leave, as I had to that in my former life, and believe me I wanted my marriage to last "til death do us part," but that ain't always possible.  I too TRUST in the Lord with ALL of MY HEART and SOUL, and as I said, sometimes it just ain't possible.  The Lord will guide you through this.  Guess it is just that as an outsider it is easier to see the forest for the trees.
Been there on business
I used to work retail management and my company had a resort there. I have been there several times to meetings and we always had some time to do things. I always enjoyed it and would like to go some day just for pleasure. There is lots to do there.
New business
I have a small transcription company that kind of fell into my lap, luckily.  It has been a year now, we have five girls and are doing a really good job with one large account.  I had tons of experience as a transcriptionist, but never as a business manager, so I took my time.  Now I am looking to get more work.  Anybody have any thoughts as to how to reel them in?
I have been in this business for
always been cherrpickers and probably always will be, just like bad drivers,  you can't get away from it.  I have given up and just do what comes up.  Saying anything doesn't seem to help.
I would say the same - none of your business
nm
None of their business......sm
I am an IC for 3 companies, and pick up another prn. They just want the work done as agreed up front...none of their business how many or who else you work for.
