I think it has to do with

this assumption she seems to make that no one has the information she's about to impart, when plenty of people on this board do, & then some. Like her assumption that I have never heard of belarc or downloaded it.

It's fine to try to teach, & great to have something to offer, but when you do it in a way that creates a tacit hierarchy; when you present yourself as having all the information & assume no one else has it, then carry this attitude into your *handle* & writing style, it's bound to get someone's back up. It certainly did mine.

Giving advice can be a slippery slope depending on the circumstance -- especially when it's unsolicited. You establish the hierarchy of "advisor" and "advisee" -- & hierarchical environment can feel kind of toxic no matter how good the information is.

Now Jan, if you would go back and read my first posts in this thread, you will see that I was calling her on this hierarchy thing, even though at the time I wasn't articulating it that well. Everything I said about the OP's problem was totally benign. Now stop flaming me long enough to give some thought to what I'm saying. I think that as informative as techsupport can be, and as complete & extensive as her background might be, this is one situation where she could stand to be taught something. It will make her little lectures a lot more palatable if she finds a way to present her ideas coming from a place of respect for her audience & an assumption that some people MAY already have the information she's about to present and more, rather than the assumption that she is talking to a bunch of technical kindergarteners, & finds a way to work this into her writing style.

Now RELAX, Jan, & give some thought to why your buttons were so utterly pushed.
