Just like trying to buy original factory parts for a -(sm)

Ford truck that is more than 5 or 6 years old! The dealership's reasoning: 'Most people replace their trucks every 2 or 3 years.' Why tout them as being 'Ford tough' and as lasting for decades, if you can't buy parts for them after 5 years? Geezz.......

I agree 100% with your conspiracy/survivalist/money-making tactic for AAMT. No BOS was ever needed 'til they came along and said it was.........

I was going to say unless you were the original 3 brave souls named on the original suit.
I still had heard lately that no one else, not one person, had been allowed to join in, so you must be in a separate class??
MTs/factory workers
I'm sure many younger and maybe even older MTs might not agree with this, so if you do, I'll be pleasantly surprised. The "how many lines per hour can you do?" mentality so prevalent in medical transcription today is not a good thing for this profession. This belittles the professionalism of the job we do, a profession which requires immense medical knowledge and skill, a fact which, sadly, no one in hospital administration or other positions of management have a clue about and really don't want to know about, else they would have to monetarily compensate us for the professionals we really are. The sad fact is that like a frog being killed by slowly upping the temperature of the water in which he is immersed, without his being aware of the change in temperature, we have by an analagous method slowly but surely become no more than skilled factory workers. X-ray techs, nurses, physical therapists, and other professionals are not evaluated on the basis of the number of patients they take care of each day but on how well they take care of these patients, so why are we evaluated on the basis of how many lines of transcription we can do per hour or day rather than the quality and accuracy of the reports we transcribe? It used to be our responsibility as MTs to put the patient first, to give the appropriate time to research any questions we have regarding the physician's dictation on a particular patient and to make sure we get it right for the sake of the patient, but now it has become the focus of our profession to see many lines per hour we can transcribe. This mentality leads to just trying to produce lines rather than trying to transcribe accurate medical reports. It is my firm opinion that we should not be paid by the line but by the hour, and unfortuantely, AAMT has not been there to represent us in this very relevant issue. If we are so professional as they espouse, then why don't they try to get on track and reverse this trend? In my opinion, AAMT has failed us. They have been so focused on style issues, which are of far less significance than medical accuracy and have caused many of us to boil inside because of the attention given to these really mostly irrelevant issues, that the crux of our problems has escaped them. They have been in absentia and have not been focusing on the issue of getting health care facilities and transcription companies to recognize us for the professionals we are and elevating our pay scale to the level it should be. I have been an MT for over 20 years, so I've seen the negative changes as they've slowly but surely transpired through the years. Perhaps it's time for me to leave the profession altogether because I just can't deal with this "factory productivity" mentality.
MTs/factory workers

There are many ways of sifting the chaff from the wheat.  It doesn't take long to figure out those who are goofing off versus the ones who are researching to transcribe accurate medical reports.  There also other means of monitoring MTs at home if one feels the necessity to be monitored.  Also, there are ways to clock in and out on a pay-per-hour basis. One is via dial-up method and entering one's ID number into a designated system.

As for being paid for the amount one does versus being paid hourly I would only ask, would you want someone rushing through your H&P, your child's H&P,  or the H&P or other report of any loved one just to get a certain number of lines a day, possibly listing an allergy to the wrong medication or listing the wrong extremity or wrong eye designated for a surgical procedure?  I have transcribed for many, many years and there have been innumerable times that I have had to correct mistakes by physicians who have dictated the wrong extremity, the wrong eye, the wrong medication, the wrong drug allergies, etc., etc.  I for one wouldn't want someone transcribing that I'm allergic to Namenda when I'm really allergic to Augmentin, and it's easy to see how these two medications could be misunderstood if the physician dictating isn't articulate enough, if the quality of the dictation system is poor, or if one is in just too big a hurry to produce lines to care.  I do pray if I am ever a patient in a hospital that the MT who does my report gets it right.  With such emphasis on line counts, it's no wonder we have patients who have had their only "good eye" or "good extremity" removed surgically.

horrors of factory farming
Not naive, just grossly misinformed.  It is in the best interest of factory farming to keep the public in the dark about the gross injustices of torture and inhumane killing of these sentient beings.  I am working right now, but I have lots of information to back this up, if you could just give me until this evening, I will find it for you.  Thanks so much for being willing to listen and see what is truly going on, cudos to you.  All for the animals.
The first factory is being built here in Georgia....sm
Supposed to bring in about 2000-2500 jobs. Hopefully their quality of vehicles will improve. Time will tell!

There is so much anger in all parts of the (sm)
transcription community, that I'm seriously surprised that it hasn't resulted in something really terrible.
Screen in 2 parts, need only 1
let me state over as maybe someone knows how to get out.
4 regularly, parts of 5 more sm
I do only OPs, so I have some free standing surgical centers and a hospital, I do all of those OP notes. It is only about 75 to 100 reports a day with all of that. It sounds like a lot, but I have tons of normals, I am not working all that hard :-).

I have a couple of specialties in OP notes that almost no one else can do, certainly not either of the companies I work for, so I pick up those specialties for an additional 4 facilities with any regularity, but it will be 5 once in a while.

This is not something I exactly asked for, it is just how it has worked out. Having that many different accounts is not for everyone, neither is the fact that I have about 200 different voices regularly, and another 200 once in a while. This is MY comfort zone and I don't recommend it.

Thought it was $350 to take the 2 parts? nm

Did you look for them in Quick Parts? sm
AutoText doesn't work the same way in 2007. They are now part of the Quick Parts building blocks and you no longer get the tip box when you type your names. You can still get them to expand with F3 if you can remember the names. Otherwise, you have to get to them the long way through the Insert menu. Did you look to see if they transferred to Quick Parts? If not, you can rename your old normal.dot and take out any macros, then copy that dot file to the building blocks folder. Do this with Word closed. They should be there when you reopen Word.
They are in Quick Parts! Wow!
Now, I have to just learn how to use them!! lol
Thank you. I didnt know if there were a lot of parts to assemble.

Selling body parts in the US sm
There was a brief mention of a recent arrest (I believe it was in New York) of a phony business set-up involving funeral homes, etc., selling bone grafts, etc. from dead bodies (one was supposedly Allistair Cook's body of the PBS fame) and replacing these parts with PVC piping in some cases. These people made "millions" and the patients/families had to be notified. One man was practically crying because he had been told he has to be tested every 6 mos. for HIV, hepatitis, etc., since he had a recent surgery on his neck. They said it may not present itself for years in some cases. They showed some gentlemen being led away in handcuffs but the story was cut short. Anyone else know about this travesty and why so little else has been said about it or is there any web site, etc., that explains it in more detail? Would like to know morel I am very concerned for the recipients as well as the unbeknownst-to-them "donor" families.
You misunderstood my whole post (probably the way I did it - in 2 parts)

Here is what I mean.  I learned in 1965 with no training.  Then several years later, someone told me I was spelling Fahrenheit wrong.  Now fast forward to 2006.  I've been doing this for 30-40 years, very few medical spelling errors, and NOW is when my company nitpicks.

There are no safe parts of the country
Yours would be no different than mine. I watch news on TV and cannot believe when I hear someone say, I just cannot believe it happened in this neighborhood. Ridiculous! When I had children at home, no I paid for everything. I also worked my behind off - away from home by the way- because years ago, OMG, they actually had you to come into an office! I had no one to help me out. I did not start working from home until about 2005 so very doubable and I worked 2 jobs for years to make a living.
you must be new it these parts. search the archives. besides that we can't afford to QA QA.
We're on production. You?
It is cheaper for members. Only one test but 2 parts.

that was the point of the original
poster on this "thread", everyone does have a right to their own opinion....but they do NOT have the right to personally attack, insult or intimidate other posters.  Thank you.  Please re-read the original post.
As for the original question...
How do they get hired? Well they have someone help them with the test, easy as that. I have also had work from one MT come across my desk and you can tell that more than ONE MT did the work. Sadly, on some of them, whomever is helping is no better.
All the original stuff. nm

thats you. the original poster is not you.

Yes I am. That's what the original topic was, after all.
agree with you on the Nagin/Blanco thing. Did you want to change the subject?

My heart goes out to you.  The sexual harrassment i'm going through is not comparable, I couldn't imagine dealing with this if I were a child..  In a way, they are taking something from us, no matter what age, when they cross that border.  I have told someone, so its out.  But my mother is another story. She has been abused emotionally and physically by men.  Like I said above, she is in a horrible state of mind, depends soley on this man.  Thats why removing myself until I figure things out would be best.  I do notice on his side of the family, he is not near his grandchildren, or great grandchildren, and over they years, they have expressed their hate for him.  I just don't understand at his age how he could still be doing something like this and not learn from it, having lost his own family? He is a master at getting people to like him...my family would raise eyebrows at me if I brought this up.  But like I said, I told someone, she understands, and it has leaked around. Actually talking to my mother, she would do something to hurt herself.  She wouldnt be able to handle it.
Very original!! Can only imagine what it would be
hahaha
It is in the original post. :)

but if you think you need to have a hysterectomy, find a physician who can do it laparoscopically. I had that done in December 2003 and I was back on my feet within a week. I didn't go back to work (outside the home at that time) for three weeks, but I had to convince the doctor to give me that much time because he knew how fast the recovery was from a laparoscopic hyst.
Sorry, should be under original post. (nt)

To the original poster.....

You said "She was voted off because she sang a Christian song."  That is absolutely not true.  She was voted off because this week when she sang country she did not get enough votes.  If you want to get really technical with it, "She was voted off because she sang a country song."

This had absolutely nothing to do with religion.  The week that she sang a christian song she did not get anywhere near being in the bottom three.  She was in a singing competition in which she would get a record deal if she won.  I don't think God would mind if she sang a song "out of her element" in this competition.  She did not commit any sin.  You sing what you have to, to get through the competition, if you win you chose whatever genre of music you want to pursue for a record deal.  Ruben did.  He sang all types of music during the competition and won it, then he made a religious album.

Don't come blasting on something you know nothing about.  You said you weren't an Idol fan, so why do you even care and why did you have to make it out to be something it wasn't?

By the way, I am a Christian.  I just hate it when people try to put religion in everything and twist things to make them look evil!!!!

P.S. to my original post...sm
We do things for our kids like take them to occasional movies, day trips, buy them a clothing item etc in addition to spend a minimum of 1 hour quality time a day per child with them. Hugs & kisses are handed out and we tell them each day that we love them. So, while they have to do chores and work on being self-sufficient they also know they're very much loved and we want them to do well in life.

I did not read your original post - but you definitely hit the nail on the head as far as MTs go. Most that I have dealt with on these boards, as well as those I have worked with are either alcoholics, drug addicts, have numerous personal/personality disorders and problems and most are just downright crazy - I think that is the first thing that you have to be in order to go into this business. They do not work well with others and are constantly trying to sabotage their co-workers - even if they work at home. Stealing and lying are not beneath most that I have dealt with. I considered myself quite a normal person until I got into this field and now anyone will tell you that I am not that person any longer. I think that listening to the depressing reports about illness, surgery and death takes its toll on you after a few years and is somehow ingrained into your psyche. I don't know if it could be called an MT phenomenon or what - but MTs are definitely a breed of their own. For any child that gets a check mark for doesn't get along well with others - they should be directed to this field for their life's work. please take this with a grain of salt - I have not had my afternoon medications yet.
I missed the original too (sm)
I'm a homeschooling mom as well. Rock on! It can be hard to figure out how to balance it all.
That was my original point. sm
I believe you really need a network to do the best job homeschooling. My niece homeschools her three children. All the work is assigned, taught and done at home. But she has access to the community band and symphony, community sports, and a large homeschool network that plans wonderful field trips and educational outings. So they have everything a public school has, except the knives, guns and drugs (this is California). Just shutting kids in a house and teaching them lessons is not a complete education, in my opinion, and I believe that many successful homeschooling parents do an excellent job of "socializing" their children. Since my son was an only child, it is something we put off for several years until we had no choice. Fortunately he was able to start as a freshman in high school this year and his health has been fine. Homeschooling is something that needs to be considered carefully from all angles.

That said, homeschoolers are also becoming not only accepted, but sought after by colleges and employers for their excellent work ethic, and an education you rarely get in public school, where all the work has to be geared to a lower level so no one is "left behind." If we had several children, I would have seriously considered it, since we are not close enough to a private school to make that practical. My son is so bored in public school, it is disheartening, especially since he is in a "slow" class.
not the original poster, but i will tell you what sm
a company did to me. we supposedly got paid for spaces. we were "required" to put two spaces after a period, etc. I kept struggling to get my line counts up to par thinking why is it taking me so long to reach my norm. finally one day i decided to compare line counts. what i came up with was higher than theirs. so i figured line count without spaces and was too low. i took the difference of with spaces and without spaces and divided spaces in half and bam, hit their line count exactly. so even they we were required to type two spaces after periods, etc., we only got paid for one. their system would take our spaces and divide those in half before giving us the line counts. i never typed another document for them after i figured this out and didn't even waste my time explaining why. i felt i had the right to do as i choose since i was flat out lied to. nothing is worse than dishonesty. no that company was not Transtech for those wondering. to me, the #1 priority is honesty, decent program, then good communication, decent pay, pay on time and as agreed upon, decent work and steady workload.
I should add something to my original post...
Being on unpaid leave is not really an issue for me, as we will have enough in savings for me to be off for a while. Also, I will not have to worry about finding someone to replace me while I am gone. I just wanted to know if the normal time was 6 weeks, 8 weeks, 12 weeks, etc. Thanks!
I think the original was speaking of VR as
she was told to use her function keys instead of the mouse and starting on VR I was also told that but just thought would take more time than worth.
I am not the original poster
No, I did not complain that I was being asked to do work I was told I wouldn't have. I responded to a person who stated they did. My response was that many MTs are no longer being matched up with the work they are most proficient at, then clueless companies act surprised when it slows down efficiency or loses employees. That is fact I have observed, of late over and over again. Please go back and read the thread.

I won't even go into being "thankful" that a person is in a two-way contract that should benefit both parties, the employer and the employee, and honor about keeping to the agreement made.

Regardless, I'm done with this mad hatter's tea party conversation.

for the original poster or anyone

I would like to leave a web site about Daniel G. Amen, M.D.  It lists several books about how the brain works and techniques for ADD, depression, etc.
