Kittens being born..HELP...

Posted By: Carly d on 2006-07-12

any advice on what to do with these kittens? Mom has decided to have them in a paper grocery bag (did not like any of the places we had set up for her!) She is just a kitten herself, a stray who showed up pregnant. One has already been stillborn, not sure how many more to follow! I know to keep the other cats away from her, but I have got appointments in town all day and can't just have her in a paper sack? Is it okay to put her and the sack into one of the boxes or what? Any help would be appreciated...TIA, the new grandma!

IMO, as long as she is safe and comfortable in the sack, I would put it in one of the boxes that you set up for her.  Just make sure she can get in and out.  If she's not happy when all is said and done she'll move them to another place.  You just might have to play hide and seek when you get back from town today.. lol  You can email me if you'd like. I used to be a Vet Tech and am the proud gramma of nine 10-day-old Rotties.  We lost 2 :(

Don't you just love them!!!  We once had a cat who delivered 2 and labor stopped.  By the next day still nothing more had happened and she was walking around like everything was fine.  She was definitely still pregnant so I took her to the vet and he did a C section and hysterectomy.  There were 3 more babies!
We adopt kittens and the last ones

got some sickness that is normal to shelter animals.  What helped a lot was lysine.  Seems crazy I know but it helps with the immune system.  We put crush it in their food, but with a dog you could probably give in a piece of hot dog.  It took about 2 days and they were significantly better.   We also had an adult cat that started coughing violently like she was trying to cough up a hairball.  This seemed to be mostly a stress reaction as she didn't care for the new additions and if they got anywhere near her she started coughing.   We first did a course of antibiotics with very minimal relief and when the antibiotics stopped the coughing started back.  We then did another course of antibiotics and a course of prednisone and that has stopped the coughing.  We had to do a maintenance dose of prednisone for life as they decided she probably had stress-induced asthma and that if we totally discontinued the pred that another flare would be harder to treat.   We're about 6 months into treatment and so far so good.

Sounds like you have your hands full.

We adopted 3 kittens from the shelter and they

sneezed like crazy, turned out it was a common infection in shelters, but our vet said to give 500 mg of lysine - we crushed it and mixed it with a tiny bit of canned food to make sure they got it.  It really worked.  We stopped it a couple of days and the sneezing came back, restarted it and it stopped.  They eventually developed the immunities to fight it.

Congratulations! I am waiting on kittens....

I live in the country, some neighbors moved and left 7 cats, one being female, who is pregnant. Poor little thing only has one eye, but she sure is cute! Have taken her in to show her a bit of TLC, now the wait for her brood! They will all be neutered in the next 2 weeks and she will be spayed after her kittens are here. One good thing though, we have no mice!

Update kittens....we thought there were 3...

but apparently there are only 2 (it was pretty early in the a.m., had not had both my eyes open or coffee at the time!) they seem to be ok, but mommy is my shadow when I am home. Is this usual?  Mom stayed with them all last night, but now is out and about. They are still in the grocery sack, so for now we call them Paper and Plastic! They are cuties!

I have experience with children and grandchildren, but not kittens! Thanks to those who have responded with much appreciated advice! Keep it coming if you think of anything else!

Born again

I am a Christian, so I understand witnessing to others; nevertheless, I have to say that I don't agree with that approach, because I've seen it fail before - not with everyone - but for the most part, that stance ends up driving people away rather than drawing them.  People don't want to hear someone tell them they're going to hell because they're doing this, that, or the other.  Maybe they do need to hear that from somebody, but it still comes across as judgmental, and being judgmental is something that Christians are NOT to be.  The old saying "you can bring a horse to water, but you can't make him drink" applies here.   He needs to understand that he can't force people to convert to Christianity just because he says all those things to them.  Maybe you could suggest that he not come on so heavy, and instead try inviting people to visit his church, and leave it at that.

Go to the bookstore. Buy him a book called "Jesus Freaks" (I am serious). He will love it. Then ask him about the book. Whether he is Buddhist, Christian, or atheist, it is always a great gift to have someone listen to your view. Americans view themselves as a Christian nation, and you just might learn something. keep an open mind, and stick to the subject of the book. Good luck and I hope the experience is a good one for both of you. The book is very interesting in the depth of human compassion and passion - no matter what your personal beliefs are.
I was born at 6:40 p.m. but am

If you know the time of day you were born, sm

please tell us, and if you are a day person or a night person.  I was born at 11:50 a.m., and am very much a night person.   I don't seem "with it" until noonish every day.

I've always wondered if our birth time might be indicative of what hours we function best (or whatever hours we prefer to function).

Let's see!!!

My niece was born at 4:16 this morning.

My sister in law gave birth to my niece at 4:16 this morning and I am sure that people will raise their eyebrows everytime she tells someone her DOB.

Truman was pres when I was born!!!....nm

My daughter was born with hydrocephalus
and is shunted. Two years ago on our way to the Milwaukee Zoo she had an extremely abrupt shunt failure (fine that morning, and then a seizure and starting to lose consciousness in the van.. just out of the blue), and ended up with a helicopter ride back to Madison and into surgery. Every day that I drop her off at school, I worry about if that will happen again, if they will recognize what's going on. She has a medical bracelet, and we've talked to the school and the teachers many times about it, but it still drives me crazy not to be able to be with her and see how she is. I do know that even though they have her whole history in front of them, she was still rollerblading and doing tumbling, etc., in gym class, which I didn't know about, and considering she has the shunt on the back of her head, it would have been nice to know. We won't have those problems at home.
You can be born gay or with an attraction to goats. You just don't follow through
on your instincts and attractions and sodomize the person/animal you are attracted to.
Born at 7 p.m. and definitely prefer the mornings. I think it's an age thing though.
Great sunrise and new hopeful expectations for the day.
Born at 8:30 pm, totally a night person, NM

Born at 10:46 a.m. and defininitely a morning person!!

That's very interesting! I don't remember what time I was born
I am very much a night person & like you, my brain does not seem to fully function until noon-time! If my memory serves me correctly, I believe I was born in the wee hours of the morning (basically the middle of the night) I'm curious to read what the other posters have to say! Great thread!
Agree! That was big when my DD was born. People naming

yep, she grew up poor... born 1935, so I'm sure sm
the economy wasn't exactly booming then, and they were certainly poor. My dad born in 1923, and HE would wash old bread wrappers to use as lunch bags, and then wash em again and use them till they fell apart. Why buy plastic bags when they come free on the bread?
My mom hoarded things too - also born 1935 - sm
when she died in 09/04 we found a lot...I already knew she hoarded paper towels and toilet paper (over 40 rolls of each in the house for 2 people); we found about 48 bags of Hersey nugget candy in one of the closets, about 40 boxes of zip lock bags, canned vegetables, etc. My dad and I divided up everything he wanted to get rid of between himself, my 2 brothers and me, so we did a 4-ways split of a lot of kitchen items. Also found about 10 boxes of brand new unopened perfumes, Poison, Chanel No. 5, etc. My mom would use things, clothes, etc. until they basically shredded. I don't hoard though I do have a lot of stuff, clothes from high school and college I just don't want to part with, lots of shoes too...I did get rid of a lot of my clothes but still have quite a bit left which I doubt I will part with for a long time, I am hoping my daughters get some use from my clothes as I have some very good stuff saved. But its interesting how older people (women mainly) tend to hoard. My mom was also compulsive about checking the doors each night to see if they were locked, she'd check them 3-4 x before going to bed. I wish she was still here so I could watch her do all the stuff she used to do and rag on her for having 40 rolls of toilet paper like I used to. She'd always say, but it was on sale....
My daughter received SSI as she was born with a handicap, but (sm)
I believe it did go by what you made.  I was a single parent at the time.  Are there any associations maybe that are affiliated with your son's illness who might be able to point you in the right direction.  Maybe help with prescriptions, if he takes any?  I really feel for you, I know it's rough.
Johnson was prez when I was born Casey (sm)

Bless your heart  for still MTing after all these years.......
