Menopause and hormone replacement. sm

Posted By: help on 2006-07-10

I am 3 years from my last period and have refrained from taking hormones because of a family history of breast and uterine cancer in my mother.  I have not felt well for some time and have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia.  My GYN thinks that bio-identical hormones would make me feel more myself but I have been reluctant to take them.  For those of you taking hormones..do they make you feel a lot better?  Thanks for any advice.

hormone replacement therapy
I have been on Premarin 1.25 mg since my 20's (surgical induced menopause) and on 0.9 mg for the past few years, am 53 and have absolutely no menopausal symptoms and no side effects of any kind. It is worth it.
Not sure how you feel about hormone replacement, sm

but it might be something to consider.  I went through menopause relatively early, and I had horrible hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, etc.  I remember once I received an email from my boss asking me to spend the day working on my secondary account, and I sat here crying, knowing that what she really meant was that I wasn't good enough to work on my primary account.  Looking back, it is funny, but it was not so funny then.  I felt like I was going crazy.

I finally broke down and saw an OB/GYN.  She is an advocate of natural hormone replacement, but gave me a book to read about it and in the meantime gave me estrogen patches and progesterone pills, and it was a godsend.  I got through the tough times, and now I take nothing.

It sounds like you have a lot going on, and if you could get rid of the menopausal symptoms, maybe you could see things a bit more clearly and address those issues as well.  It is tough to uproot your life and move away from friends and family.  My heart goes out to you.

Good luck to you.  It will get better.

Does hormone replacement (specifically low dose Prempro) cause you to gain weight? nm

Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy

Check out this site for natural hormone replacement.  www.womensinternational.com (There isn't anything international about this pharmacy - in Arizona).  Anyway, you can learn about natural hormones here, get referrals and books and just some really good information.

p.s.  I get my hormones through a naturopathic doc (ND), but some holistic docs (MD) give them out too.

No growth hormone, antibiotics or other drugs are used.
No animal cruelty. Completely organic beef, chicken and pork. It's cheaper and better quality than at the grocery stores. If you buy locally, you're keeping your dollars in the local economy instead of further lining the pockets of the Walmart owners and CEOs. We buy our vegetables and fruit from local vendors at roadside stands or farmer's market, too. (Those that I don't grow myself.)
Brain natriuretic peptide...hormone produced by the
heart.
A study a year or two back was assessing if hormone changes were
Specifically, does LOSS of estrogen cause memory loss in women. Multi-year study, BIG study, lots of subjects.

Upshot? There WAS memory loss happening. It was not due to hormones. Middle-aged women were SO busy and SO stressed and had SO many things on the brain and things to do and places to be and things to remember about spouse, kids, job, parents, extended family, that they were STRESSED TO THE POINT THEY COULD NOT REMEMBER IT ALL! Bah on the hormone theory. We just get full up to our eyeballs of all the things we have to do and something has to give.

Like, spelling the word school or something. No can do, school does not exist in this brain any more, it got kicked out so I can remember to pick up beer on the way home!
Re menopause
(Grin)  Guess that's what's wrong with me!  I used to be a bundle of energy working 3 jobs at a time, now I can barely handle one and can't remember sh** about what I did 5 minutes ago.  If hormone replacement can fix me, I want some NOW.
menopause
I can't take HRT either - my sister died of ovarian cancer at age 46. :(

I've tried all the otc stuff-Estroven, black cohosh, etc. but nothing has touched my sad moods. I hate this! Guess I'll have to look into an antidepressant. Thanks to all the replies.
RE: menopause
The psychiatrist I work for often mentions menopausal hormone changes causing symptoms of anxiety and depression. It can't hurt to mention it to your GYN and get your levels checked.
Going through menopause
I'm 43, I started having night sweat and hot flashes 2 years ago. My period is still as regular as clock work, I didn't have my first period until I was 16. Not sure what that means for when my cycle will end, I'm hoping for sooner other than later.
Is this menopause or what?

I got married last December and moved from the south to California with husband, stayed for 5 months and moved to Oklahoma where he will be pastoring a church.  All my family is back south.  My doctor told me I was menopausal back in January of this year, but still having periods off and on and now spotting.  I am so super sensitive, mood swings, crying spells, feeling neglected, easily offended, missing the closeness of my family back home, my kids and grandkids.  I love my husband and he is good to me, although does get on my nerves a lot lately and we have had some major clashes, and I'm feeling like the "honey" is gone out of the moonr.  I have been contemplating just leaving him and going back to my home in the south.  But for fear of humiliation, shame and embarrassment of what the hometown folks and church folks will say, not to mention "I don't believe in divorce."  One part of me is saying "this will pass as it is just the menopause I am going throug, but other side is saying "I'd be better off by myself.'  Anyone have gone through natural menopause and went through changes such as mine, or is this a natural occurrence for someone going through such life-changing events within the past 9 months, marriage, moved 2 different times to differing parts of the US, plus married to a minister, plus going through menopause.

menopause

I am getting lots and lots of hot flashes, uggggh

but along with this I am very thirsty during the hot flash.  Anyone else going through this and have this symptom?

Menopause keeps me warm.
Be a 52-year-old woman and you will have no trouble keeping not only yourself warm, but radiating heat to those around you.
question re menopause
I'm 48 and have been having hot flashes, sweats, irregular periods, etc. but the thing that really bothers me is my mood.  I feel really depressed a lot.  For those of you who have gone through menopause, is this a normal part of it?  I'm wondering if it'll pass in time or if I should seek some kind of help.
Question about menopause (sm)
I'm post menopause, but not enjoying being 50+ (the menopause years).  Does menopause bring anxiety and create altogether different moods/personality changes, worrying, etc.
Back to the menopause question -
Has anyone ever heard of Happy PMS cream and what is your opinion if you have heard of it or used it?
menopause side effects
I had that, too. Took me forever to get it together after my hysterectomy and still have trouble sleeping even 2-1/2 years later.  Did find that a super high B-complex vitamin and proper feeding times help a lot, though.
Most recent Consumer Reports magazine did an article about this. Most effective was hormone replac
.
Question about heart palpitations/menopause.
Has anyone else in the throws of menopause experienced heart palpitations, shortness of breath (very infrequently), and other odd feelings?  Just asking before I race to the ER.  Thanks in advance.
Regarding peri-menopause. The pertinent boards are mostly dead.

I just turned 45 and have ZERO symptoms of menopause as far as I can tell.  No hot flashes, no heavy/irregular periods, no unpredictable cycles, normal length etc.  BUT... I have noticed in the last 5 yrs or so that I get some intense PMS symptoms in the 2 weeks before my period.  My breasts get REALLY sore and my "mean quotient" goes WAY up.  It's as if I've filed my tongue.  I don't know how much of the mean I really let out, but I sure feel it inside.  I feel all tied up in knots, crabby, trivial things bugging me way more than they should, etc.  I've got a teenager and 2 preteens, so that doesn't help either as my life is obviously less than "tranquil" most of the time.  I mean, I'm not sitting around evenings relaxing and cross stitching in front of a good TV show like a mom whose done raising kids, I'm doing "mom" stuff still at 45.

So, I decided to make an appointment with the GYN and talk about what could help me.  I've already cut out the caffeine and tried some of the natural remedies, but nothing helps.  I just KNOW she'll want to put me on The Pill, but do I really want to take that at my age when I don't need to (tubes tied), risk getting fat and having migraines come back?  I don't think so.  What about anti-depressants?  Is that something like to be recommended to me.  I'm not depressed, I'm happy as a clam as long as I'm not premenstrual.  What should I ask for, or expect?

Replacement

Since I pick up and deliver I need to find replacements locally and my accounts do not realy like to go with anyone else.  If it is less than 3 days they ask that they hold it until I come back, when that is 4 docs it gets a little rushed when I return.  Finally took 3 work days off this summer with a weekend and they said that they would rather wait a day or two for the dictation than get someone else they did not know.   But I do have some back up if it is a week or so but that hasn't been in the past five years.   If I get sick, again they are very considerate and wait for the work.  Have had these 4 accounts for 5 to 15 years so we have a history and they are happy with my work.   So usually if you have been doing their dictation for a while they will work with you for a few days or illness.  I mean, they take vacations and time off and we don't get paid.   Like I have said many times, my accounts are really pretty good to me and but I provide a very good service and some extras and so we treat each other pretty equal.

I had a knee replacement....SM
five years ago. Worst experience of my life. I took narcotic pain meds for about two months, then switched to Advil and Aleve. It takes quite a while for all the pain to go away. Miserable surgery.
Star's replacement...
I like Gayle King (Oprah's BFF), so I hope this rumor's true.  Rosie, Gayle, and Joy should make a nice combo.  I may actually start watching The View again!
Training your replacement isn't your job. Period. nm

how do you use DA 127D c phone replacement?
I thought I was buying a regular old clunky c phone. I can't get the foot pedal to respond or find out how to play out loud. Help please.
replacement covers for earphones
Does anyone know where I can get replacement covers for my earphones?  I am using a Pearlcorder microcassette machine and they are small?
C-phone foot pedal replacement
Thanks...I had made a crude connection myself with electrical tape years ago for a higher volume without the headset, but it didn't work too well. The one from Radio Shack may work much better. I'm sure the sound recorder would have shortcut keys for fast-forward and rewind, but I'm not sure where to find sound recorder on Windows Professional. I'll try to find it now and make a shortcut on the desktop. Thanks again!
MT work after total knee replacement
I'm having a left total knee replacement next week and was just wondering if any one out there has had this done and if so, in what time frame did you return to transcription.  thanks.
I got a replacement spring at my hardware store .... sm
take your remaining spring as a sample for the gauge ... i had to buy one a foot long, irrc, and cut it with scissors but I think it cost under $2. you might call around to save time ... I used an "old time" amazing local hardware store but I suspect my local Ace hardware would have something too .. (but doubt home depot or Lowes would) ...

There are several reasons I have half a dozen "dead" keyboards in my shed ... and this is one ... I think later models weren't made with this "feature" (the spring under tension poppping out and impossible to find feature, that is) ;-)
Prince looked good for having a hip replacement...LOL...nm

sorry, that first line should read AFTER a knee replacement. nm

Not sure when Abby & Luca reunited, but I think Carrie had a hip replacement.

Luka is a poor replacement for my main man George Clooney.
Maybe it's the scripts he is given.  He just doesn't have the star quality and charm that George had but who could follow George Clooney?  Not Luka.  Of course I gave up watching ER awhile ago when it became Bizaarro World with B actors so maybe Luka has changed?
As dictated, we may start urine replacement at 0.5 cc/mL for output greater than.....

Beware of ink replacement costs. The more inexpensive the printer, the more the ink costs.

how long, on average, average a knee replacement would one be on Oxycontin?(sm)
My DH recently had knee replacement surgery a month and a half ago.  The doctor has been prescribing oxycontin 30 mg this entire time.  Husband has been trying to wean off of it and is down to 10 mg.  He asked the doctor if he could come off it completely and the doc said to "just keep taking it."  His next visit is in two months.  With all the discussion lately about pain medication addiction, is it normal to be on this medication for this long and for the doctor to say "just keep taking it?"  How long should one be on this med?
