Mensa AND common sense -- prejudice obviously ignorance

Posted By: nooutstandingwarrants on 2006-03-16
In Reply to: COMMON SENSE far more important in life...nm - book smarts very important but

Oh bosh.  I am a member of Mensa and a medical transcriptionist.  I think it is VERY narrow minded of the whole bunch who criticize something they no NOTHING about.  Mensa is simply an organization whose qualification is that you test in the top 2 percent on any of a couple of different IQ tests.  High IQ and common sense are not mutually exclusive.  I have two other comments:  Intelligence is matriarchal (look it up) and if you would like the cheapest way of finding out your true IQ Mensa is generally the cheapest way to do it.   It used to consist of 15 bucks and a Saturday morning at a university test -- but I'm sure there are more modern ways now.   Contact American Mensa and find out.  They are a very interesting bunch and have special interest groups which consist of just about any topic you can think of from alcoholics to chocoholics to irish dancing and beyond....

Thanks, of course I used common sense...sm

before I posted and waited until not only after the press release but after the details came out. We were carefully briefed early on on the details of what was and wasn't okay.

My daughter is going out of her skin waiting to hear.  She loves history and current events at school, particularly the mock elections, etc.  I just think it is a wonderful opportunity to give her this early in life. I hope it makes a huge impression if she gets to go as far as the importance of exercising her right to vote, etc.

I think this is common sense to the
I believe what she is saying is how to get relief NOW, since perhaps she does not have the funds to pay them?  She cannot very well take a time machine back one year and save up the money now can she?
Seems like common sense
The negative effects on our health really does seem like common sense.  I love the peace and quiet of working nights, and in the days when I used to work graveyard shift outside of my home, I loved going to the grocery store and running other errands early in the morning when places were was less crowded.  But, I have to admit that working nights kind of leaves me with less than an energetic, healthy feeling.  Through trial and error, the best compromise that I've found for me is to make sure that I sleep at the same time every day, whether or not I am off work for that day, and make sure that I get 5 hours or more of sleep during the dark hours.  I've found that the rhythm of this plan has made all the difference, which is no surprise.  This, of course, is easiest to do in the wintertime.
Is this not common sense?

I think maybe my first month or so of doing MT I would actually try to look up stuff as I came to it.  It doesn't take long to figure out that is the WORST way to do it.

Why not? Just common sense.

This is common sense...
He means exactly what EMR means electronic medical record.  Why is this so difficult to understand?  There are many benefits to medical records being electronic.  Research it and you will find out for yourself.
Again, common sense....

It is not already implemented at many facilities, yet at others it is; thus, the desire to implement it universally.  Below is an excerpt from Wiki regarding EMR.  This should clear things up for you.  Also, spend a few moments reading the second paragraph.  It clearly explains that EMR is an electronic medical record, and the means of achieving that final electronic state are many, some of which include templates, VR and traditional transcription.  So, tell me again, EMR automatically means a point-and-click system?

As of 2006[update], adoption of EMRs and other health information technology, such as computer physician order entry (CPOE), has been minimal in the United States, in spite of studies showing revenue gains after implementation.[2] Fewer than 10% of American hospitals have implemented health information technology,[3] while a mere 16% of primary care physicians use EHRs.[4] The vast majority of healthcare transactions in the United States still take place on paper, a system that has remained unchanged since the 1950s. The healthcare industry spends only 2% of gross revenues on information technology, which is meager compared to other information intensive industries such as finance, which spend upwards of 10%

Pricing for EMR systems is highly dependent on each practice's unique needs. Because every medical practice has distinct requirements, systems usually need to be custom tailored. This is due to the majority of EMR systems being based on templates that are initially general in scope. In many cases, these templates can then be customized in co-operation with the vendor/developer to better fit data entry based on a medical specialty, environment or other specified needs. There are also EMR systems available that do not use templates for data entry and therefore can be easily personalized by each individual user. Alternative data entry methods include concept processing, voice recognition, and transcription.

That takes common sense - LOL - nm

lack common sense, one's I have met..nm

Must be genius, cause if I had common sense, I would have
I like your theory though and have often in truth considered it as an explanation myself.
Exactly!! Finally some common sense
here. We're professionals, not some hired hand slave. Not too much to ask, for a doctor to dictate something right the first time. No seriously, 40% of this dictation is "correction."
DUH? Thats common sense. Not in the mood that day, so chose to be

Just as your points are logical common sense... sm
so also is the obvious reality from past performance of MQ, that you will likely not be happy there.. and need to find another place to work... you will not change the fact that because so many are "on to them" they are hiring anyone willing to work in those positions.. the only thing you CAN change is YOUR situation. You will find these same people who irritate you.. in oher places also.. but the only way you will escape the problems you have mentioned..is to leave where they are prevalent. There are many jobs posted.
Not mentioning an account is just common sense and I would not

hire her if I was in that position and would fire her if she was already hired.  If she sees nothing wrong when mentioning what accounts a company has then that is a HUGE problem.  It doesn't matter if nothing negative was said, if account specifics weren't mentioned, it is just COMMON SENSE and an unwritten rule that you don't tell what accounts a certain company has.

the reason? *no common sense* quote...nm

COMMON SENSE far more important in life...nm

common sense tells me as an IC no takes are taken ouf and if ----
that is true about owing CA taxes - you would pay them the same way you handle Federal and the state you live in.

They are not to take ANYTHING out unless you are an SE or full out employee. ICs, no.
IMO, in the real world common sense is better to have than a high IQ. nm
:+
NO - common sense does not dictate that, the STATE in which you live does!
In my state, NO I do not have to have a business license unless I have clients in my state, which I do not. So, therefore, I do not have to have a license! I have checked with my attorney, my state office, and my State Representative to be sure I was receiving the correct answers and all said the same thing!

So, my advice to anyone asking is contact your State office.
As Dr. Phil says, "Let's get back to common sense."
If you see red flags, hear bells and whistles, or alarms going off in your head..listen to it. If your already hearing the excuses as to why they aren't getting paid on time, why be one of those waiting on your check...It is kind of like seeing a train coming down the track right towards you and somehow you convince yourself you can dodge it. I'm sure others have tried before you. Excuses will never pay your bills. Listen to your gut, go with common sense and the rest works out. Just my opinion...
I've never used any particular guidlines, just common sense paired with on job experience.....nev

wondering

Its just an unwritten rule and common sense; you better home Amphion is not watching - sm
I am sure they can put 2+2 together and figure out who you are and withdrawal their offer if they so chose. It's just not good business to say who has what.
common sense dictates you read the writing on the wall. technology has made you obsolete.
and the government has seen to it that american workers are no longer necessary and allows business to outsource many middle income jobs.
I too am prejudice, but

my children are not.  They are very accepting and liberal adn I admire them for that.  I am working on it every day to try to be more accepting of differences, albeit color, religion, etc.

I have come to realize and understand that are bad seeds in every race, religion, etc.

I will never to totally free of prejudice, but I will be more open to differences and learn to keep my opinions to my self.

Prejudice
We are all prejudiced against something.  To deny that would be a lie.  I speak what I want in my own home.  If someone recorded it and maligned me with it I would seek advice from a lawyer and proceed against them.  When in my home I do it my way, speak what I want, etc.  When in the home of others or the workplace I conform to societal norms as best I can.  When offended, I either remain silent or excuse myself nicely.  When you were with those relatives were you in your house or theirs?
holloway and prejudice

Thank you for your insightful post.  Gosh..will we ever get it right?? In my life time?  I sure hope so..

there was no prejudice in OP post
nm
I have never heard anyone so outright admit to prejudice like that..sm
I used to live in Virginia. I am not prejudice, BUT what I experienced there taught me some differences. I noticed that quite a few black people DID have attitudes and were actually quite prejiduce themselves. I was very amazed at this. At one time, we had gone to a video store. All blacks running the store. Our family and another white family were there and they REFUSED to wait on this. Now, while I understand the issues of the PAST, I think it silly to blame THIS generation for what was done by ancestors in past generations. I ended up calling the district manager and the entire store was RESTAFFED from Manager DOWN. I also had a lot of black friends in Virginia. I think what it comes down to is no matter what race you are, you got some people who are ***holes and some not..black, white, asian, etc. You also have people who are prejiduce..blacks against whites, asians against black..it doesn't matter. Its very sad.
I went into this without prejudice, threw myelf actually, but it seems to get worse...
instead of better. I feel I got a pay cut with almost the same amount of work. Some jobs are great, then you get 3-4 that are heavy in editing and it ruins anything you got with a good 1 or 2.
What mensa is

What is Mensa?

Mensa was founded in England in 1946 by Roland Berrill, a barrister, and Dr. Lance Ware, a scientist and lawyer. They had the idea of forming a society for bright people, the only qualification for membership of which was a high IQ. The original aims were, as they are today, to create a society that is non-political and free from all racial or religious distinctions. The society welcomes people from every walk of life whose IQ is in the top 2% of the population, with the objective of enjoying each other's company and participating in a wide range of social and cultural activities.

I don't know my IQ, but I must be a mensa then! LOL!!!!
x
Mensa, Montana??? Well, I would think . . .

if you were as brilliant as you profess to be, you would not feel the need to broadcast it on a public forum.  Wouldn't your abundant intellect be satisfaction enough?  Wouldn’t you just prefer to sit and marvel at yourself in the mirror or something?  Why would you bother to come here and post among those who probably don’t even have the slightest inkling as to your enormous intelligence?

And, yes, modesty is a good thing to be, whether man or woman.  With your massive brain power I would think you would have figured that out a long time ago.

(I posted something similar below, but I wanted to be sure MM didn't miss it).

Sense of humor intact! Sense of hope as well! LOL

Yep, I knew it was advice, and I appreciate ALL points of view as it gives me perspective.  8-)  I've been reading the boards for a while now, and I realized that I'd get the good, the bad, and the ugly, and that's okay!

However, I specifically asked for advice about how to do it rather than whether to do it, though, as I've already decided to defy the odds and give it a go.

Enjoyed the NCLB reference, by the way!

What does Mensa mean? sorry don't have a high IQ I guess!

Mensa/IQ status doesn't mean very much to me(sm)
I have an acquaintance who takes great pride in his Mensa status, yet for the past 4 years, this status did nothing to help him obtain gainful employment. He was intelligent in that he was able to get his MIL to make house payments, pay utilities and buy his family (wife and 2 kids) groceries with her retirement funds. Guess we'll give him credit for that.

He finally did get a job after playing computer games and hacking into other's computers for the past 4 years, this grown man of 35 or so. Yes, Mensa brought him up in status. I like to think of him as lazy. He wants money but doesn't want to earn it.
Used to be a MENSA candidate but because I'm getting older, I'm losing it, only 140
x
i agree... Maybe I will join MENSA, just for the companionship
no shame in having a good IQ, when all the dust settles. Go for it MT!
Mensa, I think they are insecure, and they feel threatened that others
I am just flat out stunned at the vitriol generated by this subject. There's more anger and disagreement here than on the abortion question on page 1! I feel like people who are flaming you, and this question, are so phenomenally afraid of being thought of as less than smart, that they come out with teeth bared just to make themselves feel like they are defending the castle againt all comers. It's incredible. I should go get my psych degree and base it on these results.
last time i checked, MENSA was a party organization! Not much more going on.

I don't care if you are a mensa or a full blown idiot...
like MensaMT who tells us she is awesome at everything she does and everything she touches is gold, then you deserve to be flamed! All those things may be true, but come on...nobody wants to hear you tell about how wonderful you are. There are plenty of MTs out there doing all she is doing - with a much less IQ - who don't have to tell a soul!
IGNORANCE
You should really keep your mouth shut about the situation here in Florida and elsewhere. These folks have been devastated, homes gone, jobs gone, these are everyday people and NOT WELFARE LINE recipients. Wake up and stop being so self-centered. When one day you slip into a bad situation you will be asking for help too. I all most fell off my chair when I read your ignorant, uninformed post. You should be ashamed and ask forgiveness and apologize to this board for y our inhuman and slanderous insinuations.
MT in Florida ..
Sorry for the ignorance sm
I was using "anon" but not anymore since someone else has posted a nasty remark here. Why the nasty replies on here? I agree, this is supposed to be the helping profession. I think Cobra is only a bridge between jobs to help you with bennies but is only temporary, not sure of time, but this is the law and cannot be changed. I had to have private insurance just for myself as husband had his own on retirement but I was too young. I had to buy from a private Blue Cross through a group plan through the Chamber of Commerce in my area and so expensive. Big $$$ and no other way. I wish you the best, there is no real solution except to get into a job that offers bennies but sometimes you make more on your own and buying your own ins. Again, sorry some others are so mean, there are a few on here, unfortunately, that's why I chose to be "anon" before but never again! I am not  associated with that poster.
Sorry about my ignorance here, but what does EMR really mean for the MT?

Even if the system goes electronic, won't MTs still be needed?  Sorry if this sounds like a dumb question!

you are showing your IGNORANCE
Apparently that is all you have gained from 'getting out, living and learning'.

Knowledge of God is the beginning of wisdom.

I hope you truly 'get smart' by the time you have to give an account for all you have done and not done to the One that made you.
scuse my ignorance,
but what's an SE?  Thanks
Sometimes, ignorance is bliss....sm
If I had known EVERYTHING about starting a business and listened to all the naysayers, I never would have done it.  Bought a computer, printer, fax, and dictaphone(no on line work then), and sent out letters, flyers, had cards printed, and knocked on dr. office doors to get my own work.  I pretty much knew nothing except how to transcribe and was very good at it, I thought!  Soon learned I was very good at what I knew but just as green as a newbie with new fields.  Ended up with a very successful service and 10-12 employees.  Supported my family and still do.  Big difference in being prepared now is having the capability to do voice files.  Eventually, you need a phone so your name is listed in the phone book and an accountant to do the financial stuff.  You just have to have the basic knowledge that you probably already have, and learn as you go.
Sorry, then, was showing my ignorance! :) nm

showing my ignorance
I did not know there were services like that, how do you contact them, what are they called?
Pardon my ignorance but sm
When did they start using flash drives and how? Most of mine don't know how to use the computer! Please share. Sorry for your problem, sounds like the office manager is gloating over this - it's their problem, not yours. Charge them for the lines find out how computer literate the staff is. They usually pay peanuts and get monkeys!
They say ignorance is bliss. You must be a very ingnorantly
