Why assume those are all "better" lines of work? They wouldn't suit me. If you'd read my original post, you'd know why. As for why I'm not a prof, guess you don't keep up with the news -- massive PhD glut in the humanities (my field - brit lit/history, wome studies), thus explaining why even newly minted PhDs have to take on a bunch of cruddy little lecturer jobs to earn a living.

Life is more than work. Where else but in MT land can one earn $24 to $36/hour and still have plenty of leisure for the things that matter: music, literature, silliness, cuddling . . .

There's also the intellectual challenge of working with Expanders and scripting programs. Wouldn't want to program full time, but I enjoy puzzling out more efficient ways to do my work.
