I need help finding a good company with steady work..sm
that pays a minimum of 10 cents a line.  I have been an MT for 27 years and I take pride in my work.  Things have changed at my current company and cherry pickers have taken over so I end up doing all the reports no one else wants to do.  This takes me longer and my line count is suffering.  I know there have to be good companies out there that pay well and need good employees.  I have left my email address if anyone would like to offer me some hope and share names of companies.  Please no flames, I am just an honest MT wanting an honest job with decent compensation. Thanks for any help.
Dental hygienists make a LOT of money!
If you have any not yet in school, in all reality it would be better for you to wait till they are in school and then try to take classes during the day.  Trying to do MT, go to school and raise kids is not easy at all.  You have to make it work.  Research how much hygienists make.  Research schools in your area.  Check into financial aid.  Work it out and THEN go to your DH with your well thought out plan and emphasize the PAY.  If your kids are preschool age, tell him you want to start once they are in school.
Finally steady money. whew. Applied and got job at Dept of Law Enforcement entering

They started me way above minimum because of my experience.  I was shocked and happy all at the same time.

And of course I'm esctatic to not be wondering how much money I would be getting each pay check.  Working on production in transcription now is like playing Russian Roulette.

There's good benes where I going, retirement, sick days, no games with my health insurance.  I should have done this long ago.

steady work...gearing up to start new account....but there was no work on Tues as it was a holiday
Be patient with your eyes open....
steady work
I have steady work during the week and don't need to work weekends, but my husband's job and paychecks have been hit by the economy, so I'm adding some weekend work at least through the end of the year to help make up for it.
I would go where you are sure you will have steady work all the time.
:
Depending on who you work for.... you can make good money

I usually average between $15-25 an hour doing VR. That is enough for me. I think it helps if you have companies that pay for footers, headers, spaces etc.. Good luck.

That was my point. There will never be any steady work for anyone with TAT at 1 hour
I'm certainly not going to be sitting at the computer 24/7 waiting for reports to trickle in. We are so stupid to be putting up with this. Why do we stay?
Been trying to find steady MT work for 8 months now, at least
At first, no one would even respond. A few months ago I decided to take ANYTHING from anyone who actually did respond.

I'm used to getting paid 10 cents a line for the past 12 years, but when I did get a bite from a company, I took it, even at 7 cents and 8 cents because at that point I was STARVING and worried about making my house payments and paying my utility bills!

Now do you know what the problem is? All three frickin companies have very little to NO WORK available. This is consistent.

Now, at 7 and 8 cents a line and barely squeezing out any work between three DIFFERENT companies (even though they KNOW I am available to do any and all work they have), I am just about as bad off as I was before finding these jobs.

I know nothing else and have no college education, BUT I do know my job backwards and forwards, research skills, terminology, pharmacology, anatomy and physiology and everything else that goes with being a good, experienced MT.

Do you think I am getting paid for this experience? No. Times are bad right now, but they've been bad for me for many, many months. I just don't know what I'm going to do anymore. I rue the day I went to school for this godawful so-called profession.

Every day wake up, raring to go, hopeful there will be SOME kind of work available, at least to make $80 or $100 a day, AT LEAST.

But every day I end up stressing out, worrying, continuously being broken down because even though I'm a hard worker and a darn good MT, I am treated like low-class scum by my creditors because all my bills are late & I can't pick up the phone anymore due to bill collectors on my back. Believe me, I paid all my bills on time every time when the work was abundant and I WANT to pay my bills, but good intentions don't pay the bills. Neither does little to no work at a lame 7 or 8 cents a line.

I also have little food in the fridge or pantry, and things are beginning to be shut off left and right.

I don't know...

It's just extremely frustrating and stressful. I can't live like this anymore but have no way out.
I, too, work for MQ out of one of their CA offices - 7 years now. Steady workflow sm
I wouldn't say I don't run out of work, but maybe 3 times a year I do. Just depends. Around school time beginning I do. May pay is probably above average because the company I worked for that MQ bought paid really well.
I have had absolutely no problems with MQ, though the things I keep hearing and seeing do bother me that I belong to a co. like this. But personally, they've been too good to me.

I guess not all offices are the same, for sure!
Good money? Can we ask how much is considered GOOD in your books????
??????????????????????????????????????????????????????
QA can be very tedious for these reasons:
1. You get all the garbage someone else either could not or did not take the time to hear and understand.
2. You often have to fix all kinds of little errors that the MT had no idea they even missed.
3. If you also have to provide feedback, then you will type your fingers to the bone.

I decided after 5 years to go back to being just an MT! :-)
Very tedious. I would charge $30 per sm
dictated hour.  Most only want to pay $20, but it truly is not worth it for that.  The going speed is 1 hour of recorded time to 3 hours of transcription time, and sometimes 1:4.
I do this myself, it's tedious and slow... sm
...especially with ESL dictators. It went ok until my workload was changed from the same dictators over and over to now transcribing over 250 doctors. I routinely put in 10+ hour days for about 1500 lines.

This is not a method worth considering... only reason I do it is because I cannot afford to quit my job. Frankly, it sucks.
Very good...very good answer. Right on the money! (nm)

Very nice people.. but log sheet is very tedious! nm

It stinks. You can type it faster, it's tedious, it's tiring, and it's

Geez, orthopedic surgery is boring and tedious.

looking for GOOD money

Are there ANY companies out there who will pay you what you are worth?  I've got 5+ years experience and only getting 7 to 8.5 cpl offered.  It's not a question of whether or not my work is good or bad, it is definitely good.  I have read where so many of you are making much more money than that and I would like to know WHERE to find such a job?  I would even be happy getting paid by the hour at this point (if it's enough that is).  I simply want paid what I'm worth for all my hard work! TIA!!!

Good money
You say you have 5+ years experience-- how would you like to be making that after 25+ years???? I would like to know where to find such a job as well.
good money
Well, I worked 60-70 hrs per week last year, with 2 weeks vacay and made 113,000+ - in my eyes radiology IS the best paying.
That's definitely good money. I wish I could make that much.
I'm making about $1,400 a MONTH working 25-30 hours per week. ESLs, run out of work often, lousy platform. What's the point any more? I definitely need to pick up some local accounts and never work for another national.
Oh man....that is NOT good...how do you make any money?

Four. And they make very good money.
But I get your point. But you asked!
Depends on what you think good money is too : )
x
I think good money is 50K a year.
x
Oh, but I make really good money
so I did not understand where this was coming from. You see, I have no children at home, only 2 of us, no bills, I only work part because that is all I want but still bring home about $1500.00 every 2 weeks, so no need to feel sorry. I said I type fast.
Any money is good today sm
Take what you can to make ends meet and then switch when a better offer comes along, just don't burn bridges. Watch Jim Cramer, he says work at the Dollar Store if you can. I believe this will pass myself, just hang in there!
LOL and you call that good money?

I used to make really good money.
Anywhere from $28-50 per hour. Same few dictators, lots of templates and Expander usage, pay averaged out to be $.12 per line. I only wanted to work part-time, but the company would have worked me full-time. One particular doctor was so easy, I could do 400+ lph for him. He only had maybe an hour of work per day. Voice recognition has my job now. I've been unemployed for the past six months. But 537 lph consistently? I don't know about that. It would have to be the same pool of dictators and the MT's expander stats would have to be HIGH!
I would please like to know how you make good money at it.

Would you care to share your cents-per-line and lines-per-hour with us?  Roughly?

It would help alleviate the anxiety about it for some of us if we can hear from the horse's mouth (no insult intended) how this can be a good living for us.  Especially when there are so many things to slow us down like ESLs and poor dictators and bad sound.

Thank you.

K-Mart managers...Good money! Yes!
You have GOT to be kidding. I don't know about TODAY'S wages, but K-Mart, (or Safeway or Target, etc)managers USED to make GREAT money!! Yes, they DO prefer a 4-year business degree. These are/were not low paying jobs. Minus the business degree, one would have to play "work up" and it could take 20+ years to get up that high. The pay was about 4-6 times higher than a beginning school teacher last I knew.
Professional escort - money is good.

Is it possible to make good money working for someone else?
.
I think that is all attitude. I make very good money at MT.

35,500 a year is darn good money to me!!!!!
n/m
I knew they made good money...
I used to work for Kaiser in California. I really wanted to get on with the transcription department but there was NEVER an opening. I really miss working for Kaiser. I have not been able to find a hospital like that since I left. I now live in GA. The Kaiser here is not the same -- much smaller operation here. But I knew it, I knew it!

:)

I can make good money without overtime
I posted below but when I saw your post and it said crap- I type mostly VR and I work 8 hour days 4 days a week. I make at least $160.00 per day- add that up if I worked full 40 hour week or lordy if I worked overtime like years gone by. I get paid no more because of my years of doing this- work for national- the pay is low but I am fast. I just wanted to make about the same as when I worked in the office and set my goals accordingly.
I do VR, love it, make good money at it
and I have no idea why people who do not do, have not done, don’t plan on doing talk so much against it.
Slow and Steady
I too do not name myself a typist. i have learned many moons ago it is not speed that gets you the clients - it is accuracy. I may do between 15-400 lines per hour depending on the client and format, etc. But because my accuracy is way up there I have not lack for work ever, and my clients know that a kind referral is always a pleasure. I have private clients and work for MTSO - and enjoying watching my lines go up and down on my time, at my pace.

I gauge my counts from day to day and know if I need to put in a bit more to make my bills. I do not worry about how others may or may not be making $45.00 an hour. I only believe what I make and know what I can earn. Line counts will pick up when you concern yourself more with accuracy and stop thinking about the numbers all the time.
Steady eddie
I like your attitude! :-)
Looking for someone who owns
Am looking for some information on these products.  Thank you.
OKAY, who owns this now!!
this is like a soap opera! The world of Cyberspace!
Money, money, money, mmonnneyyy. Singing the Apprentice song.

Money with no work
Sit down and analyze the situation and you'll figure it out. I know where you're coming from and I've done that.
Just would like to know who owns the software before
I offer suggestions to update same.
who owns the computer?
If your hospital owns the equipment, they may now allow you to use any software other than theirs. I know ours doesn't. One can only use what the hospital has installed.
Another issue could be who owns SM
the dictionaries you develop to work with. You don't say who work for on what basis, but even if you purchased an expander, if you were being paid hourly as you developed them, an employer would have a good claim to ownership should they choose to exercise it. I mention this because we become extremely dependent on our personal expanders, and when we have to walk away from a job it's critically important to be able to take at least a copy of the dictionaries we spent many months developing with us. Patient privacy could even be an issue depending on what's stored on them.
He probably owns that "lowball" (or maybe
Anyone who feels pressure to underbid themselves like that has just GOT to have no balls.
possible dental lab job?
Has anyone out there in MT land ever worked as, I guess you would call it, a dental lab person?  I have a possible job opportunity to do this, making dental appliances, etc.  It seems to have a high turnover, as the job ad in is the paper a couple of times a year.  The ad always says, "someone who is good working with their hands, likes arts&crafts".  Wondering what info someone might have who has done this?  Evidently the pay is pretty good at this dentist office, although I think it is piecework $17-25/hour.
Dental
I hate dental reports.  Why in the world do they say tooth #A - A is not a number!!
