No, it's not equivalent at all if you have

In Reply to: Administrative tasks are there - whether you are digital or pick-up

NO WAY have I ever spent as much time downloading digital files as I have running work to the offices in town. Unless you live within a block of the offices, that's not going to be the case for most people.

My opinion is not meant to offend you, Patti, but that is my experience and I've done both digital AND analog. Also, I do not pay extra for FTP - I use the space provided through my ISP, which I pay for regardless to have Internet. It requires very little maintenance on my part and I've never had a problem with it. I have a call-in system and I've also never had a problem that required me going to the office. Although having to go to the offices once in a while is a LOT different than doing it on a DAILY basis, and that is not at all what I was talking about. It's programmed and fixed on my end, not in the docs' offices.

My gripe is having to deliver/pickup work daily and spend an hour running to offices, an hour in which I am not making any money but spending it on gas. With gas at $3 a gallon (or more), it is not cheap, as I have a good little trip to the offices of my clients. I've never had a situation where the uploading or downloading of files took more than 5-10 mins, tops, and I'm able to continue working while that is taking place in the background. I can't say the same for dropping off work and picking up tapes where I'm losing an hour of production every day.

Not every IC aspires to have a big service or network to pick up add'l clients, either. Some simply want to remain ICs and pick up a few accounts to bring in money for their own purposes, not so they ever have to hire help. Personally, I wouldn't want to market for another account because I know I couldn't handle the extra work and I'm not interested in ever hiring subcontractors again. Bad experiences with that, too. This is all just MY personal experience, and if it differs from yours, I'm sorry, but not everyone will be just like you, either, and wish to be seen and heard. In my experience, many of the docs couldn't care less who is doing their work so long as it gets done. I get invited to office parties, luncheons, and the like, so it's not like they NEVER see me, either. You completely took everything I said the wrong way. This was all just meant to show another side, a side which many others might also appreciate. If you choose to cater to clients and seek more, that's fine. That's just not my preference or style. I'm a worker bee and I don't need or want all the frills.

Believe it or not, some of us are not lonely at home and actually prefer that. I worked in-house for YEARS and I have no desire to do that again. As I said, my preference and my experience so YMMV, but I feel people have the right to hear that side of things, too.
