No, it isn't just you

so don't sweat the small stuff.  You will get faster with practice and time.  I've been doing this for 23 years and I've earned every cent through a lot of blood, sweat and tears.  Just do what is comfortable for you.  If you get a slow dictator, do try to turn up the speed and see what happens.  That is probably good practice to get your speed up. 

I don't really worry about setting/resetting the speed unless I'm having a lot of difficulty with a particular dictator - either too fast or too slow.  I have a "comfort" setting for myself where I tend to just leave the speed where it is set.  To get your speed up, you might think about adding to your expander/templates list for repetitive words/phrases.  Good luck!
