Not bogus, there are good courses..

Some are scams. Career Step is not a scam. However, really nobody makes decent money starting out. I used to train MTs, some from Career Step. Most made close to minimum wage at first. They were also limited in the number of reports and work types at first and hours worked. They had the basics but didn't have the overall experience so it takes a lot of time and patience from both the trainer/mentor and the MT. But these MTs are the ones that usually do well. If you start out with a national and are just handed a job and not given a trainer/mentor per se, you will not learn much and will likely fail the QA reviews but hopefully they will give good feedback and you can learn that way. Newbies don't usually do well with that kind of situation in my experience. So finding a company that is willing to take on trainees and mentor them as a first job is a good idea. The pay is also not like it used to be and even after training if you have a job with a national paying 6 cpl you would only be making around 9 an hour based on 150 lph. In my experience I have rarely seen a newbie getting over 150 lph accurately until maybe after a good six months of heavy mentoring/close monitoring by an experienced MT. JMO. Hope that helps.

but don't do it just to work at home.
What she said is so bogus!...sm

I didn't see this show, but $30-40 K to START is such a crock! In cities around 2 hours from where I live, an MT might make that working directly for a hospital, inhouse. However, I'm pretty sure that hospitals do not hire newbies to make that kind of money - they ask for varying years of experience. I shudder to think what those newbies who eagerly sign up for MT courses as a result of this swill will be making a couple of years from now. 1 cpl?

The only way that this "expert" assertion could possibly hold any water is if one contends that working at home for an MT service is probably the only career where you actually are worse off financially if you do a really good job... So, dear Virginia, you really can make 30-40K to start. All you have to do is mindlessly whip off as much production as possible and don't waste time checking your work. But anyone with a conscience-driven work ethic, who consistently produces well-researched, quality work ethic is the poor schmuck getting trampled on by this once-wonderful industry. No wonder we are getting out in droves - that's why they need to go on TV to rope in new recruits...

then its probably bogus

Is Transcription Bogus
I am very interested in becoming a MT. I am wondering if anyone knows if MT from home is real or  another at home scram. Also are schools such as Career Step scams or do they give you real training and help you get a MT job from home. I appreciate any feedback.
The "credentialing authority" is bogus, sm
and b.s. It is a private organization, looking for mo' money, mo' money, with no standing of any kind. They will not get a dime from me, for anything. They are anti-MT to say the least.
Expecially if you can try to impress strangers with a bogus IQ score

Yep, the bogus ransom letter was way amateurish and a dead giveaway
Her handwriting samples have always come back as "suspicious" by the forensic handwriting experts.

Yep, she did it.
Nice marketing too..a bogus statement about US MTs to discredit the competition nm

MT courses and pay

I was hoping to get some recommedations for online courses and find out what the going rate is for a new MT per year.

I do medical coding & billing right now, but would like to work from home since I am a single mom of 3.  The only thing is I currently make $44,000 per year and cannot make much less then that because of mortgage and bills.  Thanks for any info.

Best on-line courses?

Hello,

I'd like to take an on-line transcription course, does anyone recommend one over another? Thanks!

Kirsten in CO

Have you taken MT courses yet? Or are you just jumping in on your own? nm
x
I never took any special courses, but I had
worked a total of almost 15 years in a hospital, first in billing, where we had to code all the diagnoses and ops ourselves, and then in another hospital in rehab, where part of my duties were transcription for that dept and some of their various clinics. After my second child was born, I quit the hospital and a friend who had 20 years in transcription taught me what I needed to learn. I got hired by one of the first company's I applied with, and have been doing this for seven years now, and love what I do!
Taken courses, but not much hands-on experience as of yet. n/m

Have you seen the new issue of Women For Hire and the article about MT, how you can be making up to $32/hour and "you control how much you make."  They also suggest you go to AHDI website for more info.

What are the best at home medical billing courses out there?
Have a friend who is interested in training to become a medical biller/coder from home and I really have no idea where to tell her to start.  Can anyone help?

The schools are in the business of "selling" their courses.
Of course they are going to "sell" the profession as fastest growing, make great money staying at home, etc.
I'm studying coding too. I've been looking at different courses plus I bought SM

Step by Step Medical Coding by Carol J. Buck along with the workbook that goes along with it.  So while I'm trying to decide on a school, I can be studying on my own.  According to the AHIMA website though with my years of experience as an MT, I am eligible to take the certification exam without having to complete a formal coding course.  Transcription is considered part of the HIM department and thus if you have worked in any position in HIM, you are qualified to take the test.

So, I may find that studying on my own will benefit me better than paying money for a course I'm not sure about.  I also have the benefit of tuition reimbursement with my employer and I may take advantage of that if I find a program I like.

So, I'm with you!  Let me know what school you decide on or what avenue you decide to take.  Might help me make the decision in the long run!

Andrews School or M-TEC online are excellent courses. See inside.
If you complete one of those courses, you should have no trouble finding a job working from home. They are a bit more expensive than some of the other courses, but MANY companies will waive their 2 years' experience requirement for grads of those two schools. Do not be suckered in by cheaper schools, MT companies know which schools supply good training and which ones don't.
Assciate in Arts, medical secretarial curriculum. 2 years with courses in sm

anatomy and physiology, biology, clinical biology (taking and processing lab tests--drawing blood on each other!!), filing, skills on all types of office machines, English composition, accounting, psychology, economics, medical terminology/transcription, and, of course, typing.  In the second year we did internships at local city hospitals.

I went into transcription after working as a medical secretary for 7 years in a very large clinic.

Either one are 9 month courses at the local community college..worth a shot!

Agree with other poster.. good price..good service
I definitely think they are one of the best out there. We also have been talked through issues over the phone and also had a warranty in which they came out and fixed it right at our home. My only complaint..and I am sorry for saying this.. but... when you call their customer service 9 out of 10 times...you get someone who barely speaks English and I just hate that. I think that is true of a lot of customer support centers these days, ironically they are rarely American anymore. I am not prejudice at all. I just find it frustrating to call in for help and the help you get barely understands you and you do not understand them, thus making the experience very frustrating..
Expensive is right -- around $300 per credit hour! But they do have a good rep. Good luck! nm

Good for you. Sounds very interesting and a good chance of pace - sm

but I live in the northeast and not much need for that where I live.  I also live in a small town so that limits my options.  I have spent the last couple of years as a substitute teacher to supplement my MT job and just completed 4-1/2 months as a long term sub which I enjoyed and was a change of pace from MT.  The only problem is as a sub or ed tech you only get paid during the school year so I would have to keep my MT job for summers and school vacations.  With the way things are going in the MT world I hate to rely solely on that.  I don't want to find myself without any job whatsoever.

Thanks for all the responses.

Is the dictation quality good, are the dictators good, are you
a newbie and you still have to look up lots of words ....   The very first day I typed, with absolutely no education way back when, when you didn't have to have a degree/certificate or previous experience, I typed 665 lines.  This was without an expander and I was not a fast typist.   I can do 1000 lines in about 4 hours now on average.
LOL! Well, good! I've done ONE good thing today, then. NM

You have a good, realistic attitude about it. Good luck to you. nm

I am sure MQ will change their policies now because of the actions you took. Congrats.
Yep, a good MTSO will get rid of the crappy doctor, not the good MT...sm
unfortunately, there aren't many MTSOs out there who will confront a poor dictator and nip it in the bud to begin with.

In the old days we used to do this all the time. A doctor was put on report and told to shape up and if he didn't he would either be charged more because they had to pay an MT more to do his lousy dictation, or he was always given the option to do his own reports if he wouldn't comply.

Believe it or not, almost every physician my former company did this to straightened up their act became good dictators and found that it was actually less stressful and less time consuming for them too!!

The MTSOs just don't have the guts to do this anymore... and they should. I can make more money on good dictators with a lower line rate than crappy dictators at a higher rate, and would rather have the better dictators and lower rate than the other... it's a win-win for both the MT and MTSO because the MT is making more money per hour and the MTSO gets to pay less for her MTs and make a better profit. I can't believe the MTSOs haven't figured this one out.
This is not a good choice. There are too many good schools

that have proven their worth. Andrews, MTEC and even Career Step, but I would not choose a school that has spammed the internet in every crack there is as the one you have mentioned.  Find some graduates and see what they have to say.  Go to mtchat.com and do a search of this school.

Thank you too! A good laugh is a good thing.

I really wish you good health and good luck!

I know that what you are doing is a major undertaking.  Just remember that this is what you want and that you CAN do it!  It won't be easy by any stretch of the imagination, but once you have accomplished it, you will truly know what you are capable of.  I think you are very brave.  Please know that all of us are pulling for you and are here to help you if you need it.  Go to the hospital if you are feeling at all unsure or unstable.  Don't give up because the reward will be great.  Please let us know how you are doing.

Pulling for you!

Transcribing from tapes on a Selectric typewriter with 3 or 4 carbons and white out, no spellcheck, no expansion program, no internet for research.
I agree! To be a good MT we must take the good with the bad!
It sometimes takes longer to learn ESL docs and is a pain in the butt, but all that does not kill us makes us stronger!! I don't love doing ESL docs by any means, but if I want a job - I need to do what my employer asks of me. Take the good and bad - or find a new job! I applaud you for working with your MTs, but you really shouldn't have to! I have only been an MT for two years and I cannot imagine telling my boss that I am not willing to learn something. How rude!
Oh, that's good! Cruel, but good! LOL!
