Quick! Need some temporary/overflow work

Posted By: Gotta get some temp work! on 2005-11-09

Does anyone know where I can get hold of some temporary/overflow work?  I am between jobs and applying but this takes time, as we all know.

I need to work in MS Word and with high-speed, business-grade satellite.  We have no land line (cell phones only).  I am able to pick up voice files from a secure server, transcribe them in MS Word on my computer, and send transcription back via the secure server.

I did find some temporary/backlog work but now it's all caught up, so I need more.

I have 20 years' experience in everything from acute-care hospital to clinic notes.

I would appreciate any help anyone can give me here.  Thanks!

Overflow work??

A cardiologist just left a message for me wanting to know if I would be interested in their "overflow work?"  What exacty is overflow?? Sounds like leftovers!!

TIA,

SunnyMT

overflow
Overflow is what can't be done in house. So your "overflow" will not be steady. Be careful, overflow most of the time contains the mush-mouths. Ask him how many different dictators it will be.
Overflow Available
I have four one-on-one interviews (34 minutes, 10 minutes, , 26 minutes, and 20 minutes)  with good audio, due back Sunday by 2pm CST.  Simple Q/A format.
Pay is 40 per audio hour and will be made September 1st via paypal.  If you're interested, please email me at jdbcmcbride@gmail.com.
Temporary resolution
I scanned the SOAP sheet and can print it out (and it looks very good) and then use the sheets I have printed to print the first page of transcription on and the office is okay with this, at least for now. The MA will have to transfer the info from the original SOAP sheet header/template to the one I return with the transcription. I feel bad that I am causing the MAs more work but we all agreed that this seems to be the simplest way to go. It will actually save them money not having to purchase the sheets from the printing co. any longer at least. :) Money always talks, ya know. :D
Get some overflow assistance...
There are MTs out there who specifically want overflow work to fill in some gaps. This way, you can still hold her job for her when/if she is able to get back to her usual production. If not, at least you'll have a backup to get help when needed and you won't go out of TAT.

I have a question about overflow..sm

Does anyone working in an office use a service to send overflow work or work when you take vacation, etc?  Any information or suggestions would be very helpful.  Feel free to e-mail me. TIA

You can always subcontract out on a temporary - sm
basis (per dium) until you get caught back up. Just make sure you tell the MTs you hire that. I think for a couple weeks or so the doc's can live with you getting some help; what they don't know won't hurt them either, just make sure you go over the work before you send it in to them.
You mean "buffer overflow"...(sm)
Programs create temporary storage locations in memory that are called "buffers". A buffer's size is specified by the program, so it can only hold a certain amount of data. When more than that amount is sent to the buffer area in memory, an "overflow" occurs.

A buffer overflow is bad for two reasons:

1. It can corrupt data in memory "adjacent" to the buffer.

2. It can be used as a form of deliberate attack on a system.

There's no way of knowing how your buffer overflow occurred, of course, but the second item above means that you should always make sure that you're updating your Windows with the latest patches and your antivirus software with the latest virus definitions.

This is not an issue related to the brand of computer you're using. However, on that subject there's no reason you can't use a Dell with Windows XP. I was just looking at a new Dell laptop online the other day and it comes with XP, even though Dell "recommends" Vista (they're required to do so by Microsoft). And, of course, you can always buy a Dell with Vista and install XP on it yourself if you wish, either as a replacement for Vista or as a dual-boot option that you would select when you turn the computer on. Given the size of hard drives today, I'd recommend the dual-boot option. A local computer shop can help you with this.
Question about temporary relocation!

Due to a family crisis, I will be relocating to Georgia for maybe up to 2 years.  I will be leasing my home to a family member here in Alabama.  Just wondering, should I continue to use my Alabama address in regards to IRS, vehicle registration, insurance etc, or register as a Georgia citizen.  Since I will not be head of household in Georgia, will I not be able to claim the home office on taxes.  I will only be 2 hours away from home, and will probably travel here every other weekend, as my parents live here in Birmingham.  I work as an employee with one company via internet and IC with another via internet.  Just wondering, as there are so many things to think about.

Suggestions about temporary assistance (sm)
. If you own or buying a home and have mortgage insurance, check to see if "disability insurance" is included.

. If you have a life insurance policy, check the "temporary disability" section.

. If you have retirement/401K, etc., loans are available for medical/disability purposes.

. SAGA (state-administrated general assistance program).

. State of _______ temporary assistance/department of social services -- cash or medical assistance for individuals who are unable to work.

I'm not 100% certain about any of the above, but it could be a starting point.

Remembering you in my prayer!

Post again soon to keep in touch -- ask if there is a "social worker" turned MT on line who can direct your path.

Temporary dog house is easy to build.
Take a large cardboard box, cover outside of it with multiple sections of newspaper, then tape large plastic sheets (open up garbage sacks) over it. It is well insulated against cold and wet.
This used to happen to me - made a few temporary enemies, but
I finally just started saying, "I know I work at home, but I still have a certain amount of work I have to get done." And once I have told them that, for future interruptions, I say, "I'm sorry, I'm at work right now." My inlaws used to decide to show up for dinner on weeknights as if I had all day to just be preparing dinner for them. Just saying something like, " You know, because I work at home, a lot of my friends just assume I can stop what I'm doing for them, they don't realize that although I am in my house, I am also at work." That way it's not directed at the current offender, but they still get the point.
There CAN be absolutely nothing when a service only does the overflow for an acct and does not

For temporary relief, try Salonpas patches SM
I have chronic back pain and went through the chronic pain classes with my HMO. The spine surgeon suggested trying Salonpas patches. I didn't think they would help at all, but they did give me some temporary relief. I feel they work as well as the expensive "name brand" heat patches you can buy, although if I am going to be on an airplane, I wear one of those bigger and longer lasting patches. The Salonpas are about 2 x 3 inches, flat, have a pleasant odor, and I have used them on my back, on the wrists, and one time even on my face for a sinus-type headache. (My daughter says I was crazy to do that, but it helped). You can buy a box of the Salonpas very reasonably at any drugstore but they are VERY cheap at Sam's Club or Costco. It is really awful to have to transcribe (or do any work) when it causes pain. I hope some of these suggestions others have made will help you. I have used the type of neck pad that you heat in the microwave, but that was a long time ago. I just saw them on the Mouse Mitts site, thanks to the MT who posted the link. I'm going to order another one of those right away. There are a lot of helpful people out there. Take care...

I'm there with ya! I worked for a hospital that outsourced overflow to a very large, VERY SM

well-known service.  The quality of the work was shockingly bad.  There's no way to describe it except to say it was painfully obvious that the MTs on our account had no business being MTs.  They didn't even have the very basic skills for the job, let alone the medical terminology.

I had the opportunity to read through the contract, and there was a paragraph in the contract that clearly stated that not only did the service promise to adhere to a specific TAT, but also promised high quality, proofread reports.  Basically saying that they employed a highly qualified QA staff that insured nearly error free reports.  That's the OUT clause as far as I'm concerned.  I started a file of every report with errors from the service, every ridiculous error.

A new supervisor for our department was hired and her first order of business was to cut the flab out of department.  She told us that the service doing our overflow was being paid something like $60,000 a MONTH!  The hospital was paying the service 45 cpl.  Now do the math!  The service gets 45 cpl and pays you and me 7 to 8 cpl to transcribe for them or even worse pays 2 cpl for an India-based MT and 3 cpl for an American QA person to edit and correct it, so that's only 5 cpl they end up paying.  That's quite a profit.  I vowed the day I found all this out to NEVER work for a national service again and especially not THAT service.

The new supervisor was against outsourcing which was good news.  She set out to renegotiate the contract or drop the service all together.  I threatened her with breach of contract and that's where my little file came in handy.  Needless to say, the service backed off and we not outsource overflow to a service local to our area and a much more reasonable rate.

My advice to you is start your file and keep track of everything.  Tell your boss to reread the contract, especially those paragraphs that speak to what the service promises to provide for the inflated line rate!

Good Luck!

I think it's the temporary files because when it starts acting like this, there are TONS of temp

Even closing Word doesn't make the files go away--I have to delete them manually.

As far as plug-ins, I have tried disabling them before but no luck. I can go months without a problem, plug-ins and all, and then, BAM, it starts happening all the time. I usually start holding my breath when I have a string of "crash-less" days (even more than I usually do to hold my gut in).

I'm beginning to think it's those automatic updates from Microsoft that are adding gremlins...can't say that I'm not beyond thinking that Mr. Gates would have his reasons for doing that, although I can't say for sure what they might be right now.

I'm open to any more ideas you might have.

Opinions please! I have been asked by a small rural hospital to do their overflow. SM

It is clinic notes that are pretty easy to type.  Some of the work is digital and some is still on tapes.  They want me to come in and pick up tapes, and they want me to print and deliver reports when I pick up the tapes because they don't know much about setting up a remote printer.  I made an introductory offer of 12 cpl for the first month and then 15 cpl if we both feel like continuing to work together.  I felt that since I am going to be out the cost of gas and ink, my offer was more than reasonable.  Well, they countered with a flat 12 cpl period with a one year contract and then we reevaluate at that time.  While I was mulling that over, she called back and asked if I would be interested in doing some radiology for them in addition to the clinic work.  So basically this account will keep me very busy and is not going to be just overflow.

So now I'm back to thinking 15 cpl and because they balking, not offering the introductory rate anymore.

What does everyone think?

Per Quick Look, it is

NEED HELP QUICK.....
I had to unplug my Infinity foot pedal from its USB port today and now my computer will not recognize it.  I had this problem once before and I cannot remember how I fixed it.  Finally I have some work and now the pedal won't work.  HELP ME PLEASE.....thanks a lot.
I only use the Quick Look because...
the company bought it for me.  I like it but it's gettin' old (2005) and missing a lot of new drugs.  I sure could use an update or something, so I'll be paying attention to the thread you've started here as well.
need help quick!
Suddenly my enter button is acting as a spacebar and not a return key!  What do I do?
quick look
I bought the new version and found that I liked the old 2005 version that I had, because of the wild card function in the search. The newer one didn't have it. I just reinstalled the old one and add any new drugs as I find them through my daily work. Unfortunately, it now has a glitch that keeps me from opening the information about the drug in the index without locking up. At first I would close and come back in so that it would show, but I discovered that it would also work if you go into the appendix screens (any) before doing a search or using the index list. I like using the drug reference because it clearly lists the dosages and uses for each drug, and is quick to use. Since my account doesn't use a lot of brand new drugs it works fine for me this way.
A quick ?

Hello everyone, I am new to this board and just have a really quick question that I would like someone to answer please. On the MT job openings page when you click on an opening and in the employers description of the job they say to reply to and email address and then they list the address. However each job opening has a "apply now" tab at the bottom. Doesn't it just email your resume when you click that and submit it? You don't also have to copy the employers email address and then sign into your email and send a message to them that way too do you? Thank you,

Travis

Quick question for you, please?

Thank you for your advice.  I just need to take it!!

But my question remains, perhaps I did overstep bounds by voicing my concerns for his depression and mentioning that his brother had also noticed it.  He says I have betrayed him.  What would you have done in this situation?

quick way to remember
Think of the Romans performing a play, like Julius Caesar....The ROMANS are on the STAGE.
Too quick on the buttons there.

Don't sign it.  It sounds as if they have a pending lawsuit and are trying to make sure no one else joins in.  If they call you about it, tell them you sent it over to your attorney to evaluate it.  LOL  It's NOT standard procedure.  You don't have to sign it.

The one I got had nothing to do with age discrimination, but it was a similar type of Hold Harmless document.

quick change tip

I haven't tried this yet (our office isn't on the one space thing.. yet), but I wrote down this tip that was posted last time this issue was brought up:  At the end of the report hit Ctr-Shft F, 2 spaces, tab, 1 space, Alta A to fix.  It should switch all your double spaces to single spaces without having to remember to change the way you've been typing for 20 years.

quick, where's the Dramamine!

Quick punctuation help!

How would the punctuation be on this sentence?  Did I do it right?

Quick punctuation help! sm
Sorry, but it does not seem you received much help here. The truth is every typist has her own style. It seems that quite a few want to place a comma every time the doc pauses to take a breath or shifts a page. If that is what your own doc prefers, then go for it. Most do not, however.

Grammatically, you may use commas or not in this sentence, but none are necessary. It has been my own experience that doctors would rather have less rather than more in the case of commas. Believe it or not.

just a quick question. sm
You knew one of us would ask--you said so yourself.

First of all, I completely understand being stressed out and needing a vacation. But don't you think your kids deserve a vacation too? Teenagers generally have a huge amount of stress, and so can the younger ones. They probably need it as much as you do, and would definitely enjoy it. If you need some "me" time, there are almost always activities to do separately and most Florida hotels have a day camp type thing or daycare that's fun for them too, so you can still have some alone time.

I'm sorry, and I'll probably get blasted for saying it, but I generally think it's selfish to leave the kids out of something so cool. What did you tell them... "we get to go on this vacation because we're more special and deserve it more?"

DO YOU HAVE WORK TODAY???

I don't and I'm going insane! I left another job at another NATIONAL because of lack of work (betcha can't guess who) and now I feel like I'm in the same boat here...just wondering if it's me, my account, my supe, or what!

3,000 characters divided by 65 = 46.15 lines x .09 = $4.15.

3,000/74 cpl = 40.54 x .10 = $4.05.

Quick update. ~sm~

This is my favorite show.  I have not missed an episode since it started.  Here is a quick update on what has happened:  Meredith is the star of the show.  Her mother is Ellis Grey who was a famous surgeon at Seattle Grace.  Her mother is now in an adult care facility as she has Alzheimer's.  Meredith kept it a secret until her mother was admitted for medical reasons.  Meredith and Dr. Sheppard had a one-night stand that developed into a relationship when she went to work for the first day and found him to be her boss.  Then along comes Dr. Shepperd's wife Addison.  They were separated because Addison had an affair with one of Derrick's best friends.  Since Addison came into the picture, Derrick has ended things with Meredith trying to save his marriage, as he thinks it is the right thing to do, but he is in love with Meredith.  George is the male  intern who slept with one of the nurses (can't remember her name) but he is in love with Meredith and Meredith has no idea.  Dr. Burke and Christina are living together.  Christina has a hard time getting close to anyone or admitting her feelings.  She and Burke are total opposites except for work, they are both devoted to being doctors.  Izzy is a former model who put herself through med school by modeling in underwear.  Alex is an arrogant (or appeared that way at first) intern who failed his surgical boards.  He and Izzy developed a relationship, but he has not been able to be intimate with her, which has Izzy upset as she caught him with the same nurse that George slept with.  Not sure what is going on here but I think Alex really cares for Izzy which makes him unable to perform, but when he is with someone that he is using, he has no problem.  The chief of staff is a workaholic and it appears that he and Ellis Grey may have had an affair years ago.  That should just about cover the basics.  I do not watch much TV either and this is the first show besides reality TV that I must watch.  Forgive any typos and not sure I have the spelling of all the names correct.

get rich quick
i'm looking to make extra money without having to do much.  I've researched online and am even thinking of buying that book from that question mark wacky guy "free money from govt."  Some programs that I have saved are secret shoppers and some other things, like real estate investor.  Can anyone recommend anything out there that is NOT a scam, where you can make thousands in a month, not spend any of your own money, and has anyone bought that crazy guy's book about getting free money?
GET RICH QUICK..

Thats just for the lucky people that come upon something by accident.  lol.  If your looking, it will never happen.  If you ask most rich people how they got rich, they will say I worked real hard for it, or I just got lucky...   I tryed looking in to a few of the get money things, but they all seemed to be SCAMS to me..  If you do find any though, let me now.

Quick Question.. sm

I just started a new job doing mostly op notes and radiology.  Whenever I start a new account, especially one with op notes, I like to look up a dictator's old reports just to get a feel for what he saying cause usually the procedure is the same over and over.

Anyway, when I was doing this I pulled an op report that had read "The patient was given adequate ella may anesthesia"  for LMA anesthesia.  I kid you not!  I have also seen reports with a number of other grievous errors such as a pacemaker implantation that read "patient threshold" instead of pacing threshold, etc.  I've noted the MTs' initials just for my own records so that I don't ever use any of their reports as a reference, but I am wondering if I should bring this to the attention of my supervisor and if I do bring to her attention, should I give her the MTs' initials?  I hesitate only because I just started the job and I don't want to seem like a tattle tale or know-it-all.  But seriously, these MTs' should absolutely not be doing op notes for sure.  And I'm wondering where is the QA person in all of this?  Why hasn't these kinds of errors been caught by now?

quick question

Well, know how you feel, I have run across this. I have indeed told me supervisor, given her the printed report...(I work in-house), and she can see the initials and deal with it from there. It all goes back to "THE GOOD OF THE PATIENT AND PATIENT CARE". Some errors I have seen could be very costly to the patient's well being.

Good for you in spotting these!

Quick ER rant
I swear, it seems like the network TV seasons get shorter and shorter. There will be one new episode, a month of reruns/specials, another new epi or 2, more reruns, and so on until the season ends in the beginning of May. And if you miss an epi, forget about seeing it during summer reruns. Seems like they stuck a new show in the time slot.

And that's why I love my cable, especially FX. If you miss a show, they'll be replaying it 500 more times during the week and sometimes even repeat the whole season of episodes.
No, really, we did not know. It was a very quick closing. nm

I would like to take a quick poll...
Just for the sake of making myself feel better. Have any of you switched jobs frequently in the last 5 years while trying to find a nice "fit." I would like to look for a new job but just hate how it would look in my resume. I have had 3 jobs in 2 years and just can't seem to fine my niche. Anyone else move around like that trying to find a home?
GO WITH THE NEW COMPANY - BUT QUICK
I am so discouraged with MTing with Nationals that I would jump at the chance to do something else - especially if it were from home.
