Does anyone have any good, realistic advice for working on 60 different accounts!?...(exaggeration)

but I am really getting frustrated.  I left a company who bumped me off my ERs (which I did for over a year and were my 'bread-and-butter', and the more I complained or asked about it, the worst dictation I got, etc.  This was a change of management in which that company went down-hill fast, anyway, as far as the treatment of MTs.

so I left, and now at the 'new' company I am still doing 5, 6 accounts.  Forget ERs, I am told.

the question is, I am working on so many accounts, and even accounts with different management, different QA.  I am embarrassed to mention I just did a report using the SPECS FROM THE WRONG ACCOUNT.  Luckily, I had sent the report to QA, but I get a note from the QA like 'read the specs' (stupid) is how it sounded.  Yeah, I did, but for the wrong account.

these companies do not see how making people work on so many accounts is going to be huge negative for them in the long-run.  they risk mistakes like this, not me.

how does one keep it all straight, and why do we have to?  the only people who are having success, are people who will take any kind of abuse, it seems, and are just making the best of it.  does that mean only the aggressive will survive in this business? this gets more ridiculous all the time.

not to mention, pay and money - LIVELIHOOD - severely diminishes the second week of pay-week.  anyone else notice that?  first week I am flying on the primary, second week in I am like getting scraps, working on 4, 5,6 accounts - there goes all I worked for in the first week.

so these ladies typing 300+ lines/hour and making $50 thou a year, like so many boast on here, how, where, when ????  I am not getting it, and I am a 99-100% quality MT, working 35 hours/week.  every company I have worked with, my paycheck is totally dependent on the manager, period.

It is very realistic - sm

I have a 3-year-old and work around him.  I try to get up around 6 a.m. and get in 2-3 hours of work before he wakes up.  I do another 1-2 hours during his nap time.  I finish up at night after DH is home.  We are also at this time trying for baby #2 - I CAN"T WAIT!!

Unfortunately, what is not realistic is
getting answers from posters on this board who are not condescending, hateful, and just plain ugly.

Obviously, you've already received posts of varied opinions.

If you really want to try that situation on for size, why not pick up babysitting for someone's baby or small child and see how work fits in for you. You may decide that it isn't for you or that it's very workable for you.

If you cut back to 20 hours a week, you could easily work 4 hours a night when the baby goes to bed and never miss any time/care with him/her.

I think it would be prudent for you to realize that in order to make money at this work, especially in a remote situation, you really have to be dedicated and enjoy what you are doing. Otherwise, you'll be as bitter as many you see on here and probably not very productive.

Good luck with whatever you choose!
No but just realistic about 95% of MDs. Since
x
Sure it's realistic...
I'm back with Spheris, and the 1500 daily (always nightly in my case) is certainly possible with the large hospital account I transcribe for. I've been at it for 30+ years myself.
I am realistic......

All three of these are companies.  I don't have my own accounts.  I work as an IC for these companies.  I work for FutureNet, DTS and GIS.  Maybe you should look around more.

You're realistic like me...
I'm a diehard second shifter for 30 years now and would have it no other way. I find your topic totally unreal and wonder what planet you've been living on, sorry. Look around you, the days are gone in this country when hard working folks can "demand" and get much of anything, especially getting back the old ways of doing things, and I seriously doubt there will ever be a big turnaround regarding the global viewpoint; we're already out there and it's expanding cause the third world is where it's at regarding how to make a buck and use the people. We're going to have to change our personal lives financially to survive and go with the flow.
Rude or realistic?
You know, I visited this site first time while training online almost six years ago. I thought it was great and then not. I quit coming here for years and then used it as I saw fit for my needs but usually glanced before I left at the postings. I am really happy with the change since xx. I feel this is a much more peaceful place than before. Sure, there are differences in opinions and such, but that's what makes it unique and special. I am glad to see that nothing really has changed much since the other owners moved on. I feel the new owners give more liberties in the way of speaking your mind, and I for one appreciate that for sure.

No, you won't always get the answers you want or hear the "yes' answers you might like, but this is still a place to hear everybody's thoughts which I think is a really great thing. I remember telling my mentor that I felt this was just a B board and how could I trust one person's thoughts or point of view from another? She told me, you can't really, but if three or more people are saying the same thing, you might want to question it. She was right! Thanks B. You taught me well.

For those who come onboard thinking and/or feeling intimidated; don't feel that way if you can help it. This is one of the most informative boards you can happen upon.

If some of us sound B or grouchy, we've probably just had a long and hard day with crap dictators which you will soon know about. Everyday is not a bed of roses in this field.

Still, I am back after years of really not frequenting the board, and I think the old timers and people who are fairly new to the field know what the heck they are talking about and are right on target. I wouldn't base a job on another person's experience or opinion, BUT I would think twice if I saw the same complaint numerous times.

I don't really think that folks post to be malicious, though some may. I feel most of us post our true experiences with different companies and we do it hoping others don't fall into the same horrible traps we may have got caught up in. Truth is though, I've just had bad timing a time or two and happened into bad situations when companies were a mess. They later "got it together" and were fine, so who knows. Go with your gut as admin suggests on this board and don't base an important decision about work on somebody else's opinion or experience. My mentor did tell me though, and I still do heed the warning, if more than xx people say it's true, it just might be. Thanks
B for warning me. lol You're great
I agree, Simon is just being realistic!

Realistic Income Expectations??

Hi guys!

I am a mom who currently runs a very financially successful home daycare business.  I am looking for a change and considering MT.

After much research I am still unsure about the REALISTIC income that can be made doing MT.

I will be working 6 hours a day - no kids, no interruptions etc.  How much can I really make a year as an independent contractor from home?  I am very familiar with medical terminology etc and plan on taking an MT course.

I would really appreciate a response.  I don't want to give up my daycare and spend money on a course only to find out later I have wasted my time and money.

Thanks!

Ok - There's a diff between DREAM job and REALISTIC GREAT job!
Do want that? Seriously.

What's *realistic* is that after I've paid my rent, (sm)
my utility bill, my car insurance, my ISP & phone bills, my medical co-payments, dental bill, etc., I usually have a choice between eating or buying gasoline. So currently my car sits in the carport, fuel-less and rarely driven, but insured - just so that I can continue my close relationship with Chef Boy-Ar-Dee and day-old (or older) bread.
1500 lines per day? Is this a realistic line
count to be able to make daily in the current MT climate? I have been in MT field for 30 years, with last 10 as QA.  I hate it, and can't wait to transcribe again. I am still really fast, never lost my skills thankfully, and can easily hit 1500 lines per 8 hour shift IF the work is there, though.  That is the target I would have to hit to even come close to what I am making currently as QA - things are tight on this salary, and can't get much tighter!  Do you think most companies have this sort of workload to offer MTs?  I used to work for 2 companies 15 years or so ago. Maybe do you think it would be more realistic for me to try to work for 2, or is 1500 lines steadily daily not a big deal?  I'm just so used to getting paid hourly, and never having that gut-wrenching fear of running out of work.  I don't need benefits at all, so IC is a big possibility.  I hope you understand, and I really appreciate your thoughts.   I'm so scared, but have to get out of my current situation at "you-know-where" before I lose my "you-know-what"...   Figured I'd peddle myself off as an MT rather than QA - worry about that down the road at a good company.
lets be realistic and talk about companies
nm
I do that all the time. You haven't snapped, you're just realistic. -nm

That is only the half of it...check out this site for a more realistic view of the future of med rec
http://www.mohca.org/standardsbodies.php3

We have not much to fear from overseas, in my opinion, compared to the technology being created every day to reach the goal of the 'standardized text' paperless record (EHR - electronic health record).

No more 'free text' or dictation in the future.

Same for billing/coding, which will be done automatically with mobile point-of-care hand-held PCs.

Certainly, there will still be editors, but I can not get any solid information as to how this technology will affect MTs. Will be still be needed, if so, in what capacity.

I keep hearing we should be open to being trained in the new technologies that are coming, but hey, what ARE they, and who will train us?

The only thing AAMT seems to be suggesting/promoting, is (what will make them a lot of money) for certifying MTs...what good is that going to do us?

I would gladly train and learn new technology so I can 'stay in the game,' but how, what, where, who pays, when? What will it be, what do I have to do?

I have E'd several people, including Ms. Tessier herself, and have not gotten any kind of response, period.

Heck with being certified, tell me how I can keep my job for the next decade before I can retire and MT as we know it is extinct!

My apologies up-front for any typos - I am not 'on the clock' so-to-speak...thanks.
Be realistic! A newbie, fresh out school, no experience whatsoever cannot expect to get accounts

on her own and definitely cannot expect to earn $50k!

EMR is coming whether you like it not and whether your doctors are older or not.  Eventually the older doctors will retire and the new generation coming out of medical school are products of this technological age.  There is no stopping it.

Advice to YOU..1st learn to spell before insulting poster and trying to give advice...sm

Sound advice from a fellow MT if you want advice or support (sm)

I have been an MT for over 10 years.  I also am getting burnt out, tired of my job, day in day.  However, I do love transcription and make excellent money at it, have grossed over $50,000 per year the last 5 years.  I decided to go back to nursing school and am very happy with my choice.  However, over these 10 years of transcription I have had my ups and downs.  My biggest issue with being at home working is lack of socialization, being home day in and day out with just the kids and the animals really gets to a person, sure hubby is home at night and thinks working from home is the easy life, thus the return to school and boy has my overall enjoyment of life changed once I realized I was the problem, not everyone else and I needed to find myself again.

Anyway, my biggest advice to you three-fold:

1.  Get into counseling for yourself, find out who you are and what your needs are, whether or not you think you need to, I sense you are feeling overwhelmed and need someone other than your family to talk to that can be nonjudgmental to your feelings and needs.

2.  If you're only making $100 after you pay preschool you can either keep doing it and be miserable, or quit because you are lucky enough to have a husband who can support the family without your income. (See how fast his mind changes just by losing the income you do have as to whether your job means anything.)  Or look for a different company or office that you like more and are more productive if you really want to do transcription (lots of fish in the sea as far as companies).

3.  Find a local "mom's" group where you can get out and socialize.  MOPS (mother's of preschoolers) is an excellent one that is nationwide, they have a website.  Also Mom2Mom is in a lot of areas.  They provide a once a week time for moms with kids the same age to get together, socialize, (some offer spirtual guidance some don't) and each week a different mom takes a turn watching everyone else's children at the facility that hosts it so the other moms can talk about things they have in common.  Every stay-at-home and work-from-home mom needs to socialize with adults, without their kids, or they will have a nervous breakdown eventually no matter how much they love their kids.

Sorry so long but it does get better but you have to take the first step at making yourself happy.

every question asked on here could be documented in some book. So? cant a question be asked?
x
You have a good, realistic attitude about it. Good luck to you. nm
x
Okay, you asked for it

Multivitamin - prenatal (as directed by GYN dr, I'm perimenopausal)

flaxseed oil (1,000 mg) once daily)

Chromium picolinate (500 mcg) one daily

B-150 vitamin one daily

Green Tea capsule (315 mg)  one daily

Calcium, magnesium and Zinc (combined tablet)

I can skip a few days and can really tell it. My energy level really decreases.

How many of you get asked how to get into it?

I have people I do not know that heard from someone that I work at home and want to know what it takes to get into it.  Until this discovering this board this year, I would tell them that I lucked up into the job.  I worked at the hospital and because of a sick child I was allowed to go home to work aftering working in a clinic setting for four years and hospital for two years.  I also tell them it takes a lot of discipline to work and not do other things that needs to be done around the house.  I don't mind explaining to them.  I give them the pros and cons.  What I can't understand is why do they think they can call me during working hours and keep me on the phone with questions?

Have you asked her vet?
Thats strange. I'm not sure why, i wouldn't think its a disorder in anyway. Have you asked the dog's vet? That might be your best resource. Is being around the father new for her? It may just be that she is still adjusting to the new person in the house or her new environment. Once she becomes adjusted, I'm sure she will be fine. But Anyway I would ask the vet- they would be the best, most reliable & accurate resource.
Again, I do not believe she asked you anything!!!!!
nm
I asked the same ?
a few earlier posts as I am in the same boat. I am leaning towards the local job which is pretty much the response I got from other people. The reason being that I would have the same dictator over and over and can use macros/expanders to work less time and earn more money which sounds good to me.
Thank you. That's all I asked. nm
.
Well since you asked here's.....
I would never have anyone treat my neck if I were having problems like you have. One wrong move and you could get paralyzed.

I've seen 3 chiropractors over the years and only 1 was worth a toot. The other 2 were just out for money - trying to see how much they could get me to come in so they could make the money. The only good one I found works out at my gym and has a reputation for being an honest guy - and that was my opinion as well. He helped me when I had some lower back problems and I'd go back to him in a nannosecond for that if a problem arose again.

Make sure if you see one that you ask friends, family, neighbors, etc for recommendations of someone who's reputable.

The biggest quack I saw was right after an automobile accident when I had a muscle spasm in my shoulder from where the seat belt grabbed me and the lunkhead thought he saw the equation of automobile accident + another driver's fault = tons of money if he kept me coming in. Clue #1 he was ruthless was on the first visit he was wanting to know who my attorney was and insisting that I needed one. Good jiminy crickets - it was just a muscle spasm!
I have asked him about why?
He says, he loves her. He said it doesn't matter to him if she is a lesbian. He loves her and her kids. The kids are not his either. He simply likes what she has to offer him. He is constantly in fights with her other lovers who lives with him and her also. HELP
I would have, had I been asked. sm

My mother, God bless her, was adamant in her wishes to be placed in a nursing home when the time came so that she wouldn't be a burden on any of us, although we all would have taken her in.  She took care of her mother who was very ill for a long time and she told all of us that she did not want any of us to take her in because of what she went through.

She lived on her own until she was almost 80, despite failing health and my dad having died 15 years before.  When the time came that she knew she didn't have much longer she insisted on the nursing home and stayed there for a short time until she passed away and was buried next to my father on what would have been their 60th wedding anniversary.

I took in my grandmother (my mom's mother) for 3 months back when my mom and dad wanted to go to their winter home. It was hard, as gram was so sick, and I found myself at times wishing I hadn't agreed, but it was one of the best experiences of my life taking care of my grandmother and I'm glad that I had that time with her.

Would I have taken my mom in if she had asked?  You betcha.  In a heartbeat.

Been asked before
When will that buzzing noise stop.  Am off of here until it does.  I  know that this has been asked before but it has been 3 days since it has started.   Driving me nuts.  Will try again next week to see if it has stopped.
I think I asked for too much...sm
I applied for a FT position with a large hospital in my area.  I have 7 years experience doing the "basic four".  On the online application it asked what I would want for a salary and I said $17.00 p/h.  Then, when I thought about it, I wondered if I had asked for too much and maybe they wouldn't even contact me.  I looked up the median income for my area and for working in a large hospital it said $25,000 to $29,000.  So, any advice?  Should I reapply with a lower demand?  I figured if I gave them a higher number they would have something to work down from, but I think I went too high.  I would really love to get back into a hospital and away from working from home.  So....should I reapply?  Any advice?  Thanks in advance!
This is asked so often; wish there was a way to have a
nm
I should have asked for more lol
They didn't blink at $26. lol. Oh well, next time I'll know to charge more. I'm excited to be doing this project though.

There are a lot of "closet" Montana gals around here. :-)
Someone asked me to do that once -

I had almost forgotten - it was the worst thing I ever got into - and I have done textbooks and all kinds of MT.  You couldn't tell who was who, some was not audible.  Total nightmare.

Yes but you asked for her to tell you.
You can't fault her for knowing your dx when it is her job to type it up.
I asked my doc...
and she had no idea who did her transcription?! I think a lot of doctors are completely clueless, as their office managers/hospital set all of this up and the docs just sign the notes when they come in.
I asked here because
I felt I could get some sound opinions, but unfortunately, there is always someone who thinks you are doing something wrong. I am a single mom, have raised her without any help from her father or anyone else, have worked for 30 years as an MT and a large chunk will go to my church. I respect and value the opinions of fellow MTs (the majority of them) and I thought that was the purpose of this board, to ask for opinions and help when needed. I do know enough to speak to a financial planner but I wanted opinions on how I should handle the work situation.
Only asked for them once..

... several years ago after losing our first child I asked for all records from during my pregnancy.  He was missing half his heart and somehow it wasn't noticed on any of the 3 ultrasounds I'd had.  Also, I went in with my water broke 8 days after my last ultrasound and it wasn't in my chart that day, which I thought weird/unacceptable.

Found out they did not see the half of his heart but just wrote it off as being at a bad angle along with me being overweight.

Nothing that could be done about it after the fact, but I just had to know what happened and how such a thing was missed.

OK I THINK I asked this but anyone using a MAC

to work as an MT?  If so, does it work seamlesssly with WORD?

When I get a new computer, I'd really like to toss PC for good.

I get asked how to become an MT a lot. .
The RN around the corner from me called me a couple of months ago and said that she wanted to ask me about that "little" job that I do at home. After biting my tongue, I just told her I went through a good medical transcription program that took about 13 months online, and the pay isn't that good at first. She said that she shouldn't have to take any classes because she was a nurse and knows how to type. I told her if she thinks she doesn't need any training to go ahead and apply. I gave her a list of companies and haven't heard from her since. Most people I have talked to just want to start working and think it is easy. I was a medical technologist for 20 years and most people thought all I did was draw blood. I figure this is along the same lines and don't really bother any more to explain what I do. They don't really seem to care anyway.
I would think that someone had asked for more --sm
work and that it had to come from somewhere..you. This happens, a lot, unfortunately.
You asked sm

ChartScript and Careflow:  Terrible stuff, slow demos, weird font attributes.

MedRiteXL:  It is okay.  The demo screen puts you through a lot and there are not multiple ways to search for something.  You can look up old reports, but that is a bit slow and cumbersome too.  The actual document screen is nice and user friendly.  I found it fairly fast.

MTWorld:  I don't think there is anyone still using this.  I have worked for 2 companies that did.  If you have to look up a pt or other information, put in a cc or change a work type, it is awfully slow and you really do have ot know what you are doing to make it user friendly.  I have to say, I thought this was the fastest platform I'd ever work on.  I am wrong.

Bayscribe:  In my book, this is a SICK JOKE.  I found the ADT screens to be time consuming and confusing.  Some companies have a ton of fields for it and some don't.  The Expander in it is ridiculous.  It won't cap the first word to save your life.  You can't see how much work is available.  You can look up old documents, if they are yours.  It will give you a line count at the end of every document you send.  I never got up any speed on it.

Winscribe: I think that is what it is called.  I really liked this.  I think the company I worked for who used it could have maximized it more.  Some of the things you can do with it they didn't utilize and that was too bad.  It could have been so much better.

Extext:  FOR ME, this is the fastest easiest platform there is. I have had no issues getting the minimum line count and in fact, I started getting bonuses for production after the first 3 weeks I worked on it.  I continue to love it.

Whatever it is that Keystrokes uses I didn't like very well, but that might be because I wasn't trained properly.

There is NOTHING a Word like or Word based platform can do that wasn't faster with WP5.1 for DOS.

Sorry I even asked

To all of you who have absolutely no heart - I AM FOLLOWING THE ACCOUNT INSTRUCTIONS!!!!   I have no probem following the instructions - makes my job a lot easier.  It is when the high-and-mightly QA does not follow the instructions and I am marked off for it that I have a problem.

With people like all of trying the "help" others, no wonder this profession is going down the tubes.  Guess you all really have nothing positive and nice to say, so really I have nothing to learn from any of you.

I have asked that but never get a name. I can't believe I would be the only one so off.
nm
Well, since you asked
All the lucky MT's that have M-F day shift in Bangalore are probably on the system them and we can't have the pesky US-MTs slowing down the server, can we?
Glad you asked
Brach's Chocolate Stars
rofl. MD just came in and i asked, here's what he said
the pt has a "sort of meandering gait"   LOL
The OP asked for their platform. A (sm)
platform is what you type on, which is word, NOT EXtext. That is the expander. I know, I work there!!
If you asked that 2 months ago
I would have told you MQ whom I was happily with for years and years but now I sorrowfully have to say, NOT HERE!
I don't think I asked about MQ. I just wanted to know the
Shorthand and Shortcut, so I can buy the best one.
