Technology has made it so much easier for dishonest people to

take advantage of others. On the internet you can be Miss America, you can be a millionaire, you can be a movie star, you can be anything you want to tell people you are and these services are a breeding ground for people like this.

No thanks.

I'll size people up in person, at face value like anyone should who has nothing to hide.

Normal people don't have to resort to hiding themselves behind a monitor.

common sense dictates you read the writing on the wall. technology has made you obsolete.
and the government has seen to it that american workers are no longer necessary and allows business to outsource many middle income jobs.
I think it is just easier for some people
My mom is a fast typer. She was over 100 wpm on an old manual typewriter. She insisted I take typing in high school. My fingers fly, however, that doesn't translate to the piano, lol.

Even when I was at MQ on Medrite, I got over 250 lph, and I was a newbie, right out of school. I do use a lot of expanders, but honestly, my fingers are just fast.

When I worked on an ER account, I was able to do 425 hour (lots of templates, but still)

However, the older I get, I wonder if I will be able to keep up the pace.
A lot easier to scam people for $11.75
This sounds like a similar scam that used to post here. Non-MT work-at-home jobs that sounded a little too good to be true and the email addy was always HR at something or other dot com.

People are probably not going to pursue losing $12 in a scam like they would several hundred.
Dishonest, that is.

Dishonest QA
I have printed copies. I used my printed copy from my PC to compare with the "corrected" one that went through QA. The word I supposedly spelled incorrectly isn't spelled that way on my copy. I went above QA before and it did no good. I sort of think this person may be the "head" of QA and is on some ego trip.
Dishonest QA
I think you are correct in your thinking. I have only been at this type of work for a little over 2 years, but I have noticed the same thing. I don't mind being told I did wrong when I actually do wrong, but I cannot keep quiet when faulted for something I did right.
It is also dishonest and believe me, they DO know the difference--sm
I know many doctors who have their staff basically QA the returned dictations and look for both errors and line count irregularities. I know two specifically in the accounts that I have that do this on a daily basis. I would no more *cheat* these doctors any more than I would try to *cheat* the IRS. Please do NOT take the advice from this person!!!
Why do you assume she is the dishonest one???
Tell me why you think she is the dishonest one -- unless you are posting for the present board.
If AAMT and its dishonest 'advocacy' had never existed,
They've turned MT into nothing more than exploited, sweatshop labor.

They shouldn't be allowed to do business in this country.

But the climate in the US has definitely begun to change since all this economic crisis B.S. started coming to light, and very likely the healthcare industry is going to get a thorough shaking-out, as well. I believe the time was never better for MTs across the country to start talking, writing, and making their voices heard in Washington that we want these AHDI people investigated, and hopefully prosecuted.
Yep, it is new technology. Anywhere you can
get cell phone signal, you can get service. I am sure it will get better.

What a world to live in these days. I didnt want to spend the whole summer indoors, so I got it.

It is just combersome (however you spell that word) to lug around foot pedal, headphones, etc. lol

Not to mention the books if you need one, but it gets me out for a couple of hours a day with the kids.
ASP technology
i would recommend looking into an ASP if you are not great with computers. They make things pretty easy and do all the "tech" work for you. We use Medikin, I would say check it out ... and GOOD LUCK! :)
Technology
I used to fear for our profession...rumors of voice recognition technology, then decided to embrace it, not fight it.  Times will always change.  I jumped on the bandwagon, and am speaking reports, not typing them, and am up to almost 500 lines/hour.  We can either spend all our time worrying, or we can use our God-given intelligence to make changes work for us.
No it isn't the same. Technology
seems to have stolen some of the personal touches.
B. S. in Medical Technology

I worked in a hospital laboratory for 33 years and retired in 2001. I found out about a year later that my husband was losing his medical insurance after he retired on disability and so I had to go back to work. I had dabbled with transcription in the pathology department and so I decided to make it my second career and I just love it. I get to work from home and don't have to deal with the office politics and all the bureaucratic red tape that comes with working at a hospital.

Color me happy!!!!

Ellen S.

I am not laughing at the technology.
At this point, at least to my understanding, the health insurance industry and Joint Commission require detailed documentation, especially the insurance companies who love to quibble on what they'll pay. When the detailed documentation is no longer being required and standard text and check off systems are used, the docs have no way to cover their butts. Let a few of them be sued for malpractice because they have no detailed proof of exact treatment, and we'll see just how wonderful this mobile system works. The insurance companies will be in an uproar over the judgements they are paying out.
BS in Medical Technology
I worked as a medical technologist (lab tech) in a hospital laboratory for 30+ years before retiring in 2001. I was interested in transcription as a second career so I volunteered to cover the pathology secretary's days off just for the experience.......and here I am and love it. The pay is only half what I made in the lab but there is much less stress and I love working at home. Obviously, my many years in the medical field helped tremendously with terminology but there was still a tremendous amount to learn; it's a continuous learning process.
Right-it has nothing to do with keeping up with technology... sm
if it means compatibility with a company platform.
technology smarter than you think

An advert for *TAKE THIS MEDICAL TRANSCRIPTION COURSE AND START A NEW CAREER!* was sifted into my junk email box.

could mass producers be using technology? (sm)
A friend once told me (a man, of course - haha) I should be using VR personally, for my own work at a national company.  I considered it, but did not have the time (or money) to invest; however, I have noticed a couple of posts on here regarding such.  Something about the dragon- dragone, not sure what it is called, but I do think there are individuals using the technology, as employees.  I mean, why not really...

If MTs are using it personally, if it were to catch on, couldn't that cut out the work force significantly?  What if companies supplied us with it, wow, we would just be editing all day long, how hard could that be?  Lines would be gobbled up.

Not that I am accusing this person of doing that, but if she is, it would definitely explain how there are people making huge bucks in the MT world.

Perhaps that is what it will come down to...weeding out about 1/2 of us  ??
50, A.S. in Medical Records Technology.
Of course now that course would be called HIM.  Transcription was included.  My first job was in a physician's office and consisted of mostly transcription.  High school courses were heavy in typing. I do not know that I could contribute to a rebuttle.  The company that I just left had mostly older employees.  This company just closed.  Now I am an IC with about the same pay.  I do not believe that there are as many young people entering the profession.  Part of that is because it is hard work, and no longer pays well in proportion to other jobs they can train for.  Also, who wants to spend money and time training for a job that may be outsourced at any time?  The only young people I know going into this profession are doing it because they want to work at home.  This once was a good profession to enter, but now things really seem to be going sour.
It's called technology and progress.
Things change. It's been happening since the beginning of time.
Does anyone suppose that with all the advances in technology that
there might be some more companies willing to take those MT's who only have satellite in the future?  There are so few now.  Really limits a person's options.  Wadyathink? MTSO's - any response??
A.S. in Medical Record Technology
This included a course in Medical Transcription.  Went to work in a physician's office.  My job title was medical records, but the main component of the job was transcription.  This led to later full-time transcription job.
If you doubt progressive technology, remember
We've gone from typing in WP51 from cassette tapes, looking up words in a library of books rather than on Google, printing our own work and delivering it by courier to transcribing dictation directly into EMRs via internet-based software that was recorded on palm pilots. The extent of technology that we've seen in such a short time to me is amazing and scary at the same time. I also would like to think that there will be a long-term demand for editors (I am one), but common sense tells me to start thinking about a different avenue.

Anyone have exp with Vscript platform by MT Medcore Technology?
I just left EMDAT Inscribe and don't want a repeat of a horrible platform.  Thanks for ANY information!
It's better sound for one thing. C-phones are just old dinosaur technology.
x
We have evolve with the technology. MT will simply become ME (medical editors).

What doctor's don't know is that speech recognition still requires A LOT of editing from a Transcriptionist in order for their report to be chart-ready.  If we let reports go as they are straight out of the SR software...  it just isn't going to happen.

I do strictly SR editing and there is a ton of editing that has to be done to each and every report.  There will still be plenty of work, it just depends on how adaptable we can become.  Of course, we will have to fight for a decent wage because the natural instinct of management is to want to pay us less, because in their minds we aren't working as hard if we don't have to type every single character in a report.  Nevermind the knowledge base we have... but that's a discussion for the future.

i made $15/hr before and didn't stay long because i made so much more on production. sm
that was with full benes too. i wouldn't do it for less than $20, but i think even with $20, i'd want benes. are you in-house?
I remember doing secretarial work on those old typewriters. I can't imagine MT w/o technology.

Every year technology makes my job easier.  Google, internet dictation, spell checks, expanders.  I can't remember the last time I opened a reference book.  Direct deposit.  Banking on line.  I can't remember the last time I was actually inside a bank.  Love the technology for MTs and payment process.

I do remember standing in line to get check cashed on Friday at lunch when I was a secretary in medical office. Ughh.  I do remember having to get all dressed up to sit in an office w/o windows, too hot in the winter and too cold in the summer, to type and file.  Ughhh.  I remember lines of traffic going into town to get to work and then trying to find a place to park close to the building.  Ughh.

Lovin the new things/gadgets to make my life easier and don't look back with any regrets for the "good old days"

Just one thing though. I wish we were paid according to 2005 cost of living standards.    What's up with that?

Babies looking for attention. They have the technology of the Woodroow Wilson administration.
They'll get some kind of concession and go back and try to think of another way to get money out of us. Happens all the time.
if you live among trashy people, low income people, people w/o goals or direction,
content to just get by, you by default become a part of a group. "people" have decided to group trailer people as trash. that is because there are enough people in that group to earn the title and even if you aren't trash, you are categorized by others. did i think i was trash in lower class neighborhood surrounded by people who drank and fought all weekend? no but i knew i wasn't staying and did not try to pretend that all the fools in the neighborhood were just nice folks who ended up where they were because high horse snobs deemed their neighborhood low class. people for the most part live exactly where they belong because they don't want to educate themselves, they don't mind "trash" around them and they don't want to be bothered trying just a bit hard to extract themselves from that world. they justify everything to themselves i guess saying everyone who doesn't like their lifestyle is a snob and the comedians (Jeff Foxworthy/Chris Rock, etc) who make fun of them are just ill-informed.

As for me, I fought hard to get out and don't even want to look back. It amazes me people stay for generations.
I don't know how it made such a small diff in your invoice... made a $100 diff in mine! (sm)

If it were only adding up to three bucks, I wouldn't sweat it. $100? Yeah, that's baseball registration for my son for this year. I am not giving tabs, returns, etc. away free when it adds up to that much difference!  Why should I charge less for a Return than I would for a"K"?

It's a lot easier to get rid of a BF than a DH
I wouldn't put up with it, but that's just me.
I think it's easier but.....
I also think MTSOs add them so we don't get paid for them, after all if they add them we do not actually type them.  Just my opinion.
It will get better, and easier. My one sm

inhouse experience was awful.  Not only was I transcribing for $15 an hour, I had to make copies and go down 2 flights and stuff their mailboxes with copies.

I so much prefer working at home of a national, where all I do is transcribe, and they take care of the distribution of the records.  I just push send.  Plus I find the dictators a lot more doable than at that hospital.  They were a mess.  They didn't even have a standard format.  It was just, whatever.

We have it easier than we think

My youngest sister came by this late night after getting off work.  She works 2nd shift at a local factory.  It has provided an okay and steady living for her and her family but it has taken its toll on her.

Her beautiful young face is worn and tired.  Her clothes are nasty from the oil and sweat and metal shavings.  Her poor little hands are literally worn out, muscular, rough with callus.  Her back hurts all the time from all the standing.  Some of the attitudes she works with keep her humble little soul in discomfort.

She gets in trouble by management and by every line worker if she has to miss.  She has no opportunity to move anywhere really within that plant.

We don't always have the work we want in this business and sometimes we have to really take a stand to get where we need to be.  All said and done, though, we have it easy.

I don't have to wear my self out physically.  I can get up and stretch and take a break.  I can be somewhat flexible with my time.  I don't have to put up with people who try to control or intimidate me.  I have a marketable skill, though that market is changing rapidly ... it is still a skill that I can adapt and use.  There are so many ads on this very board that I can explore if I need a change or additional employment ... all those opportunities and I don't have to move anywhere, I don't have to uproot my life .. just go to work for someone else.

We have it easier than we think.

Again, easier said than done.

I have found that many transcriptions who say they want to work for me have one of three issues:

1. They embellish on their experience/quality.

2. Time off--they want more time off than I get and they usually wait until they're walking out the door to say they're not available. Deadlines are seen a "negotiable".

3. They are asking for more per line than I am able to pay (usually they want .12-.14/line--I only charge .12/line on my accounts because that's all the market will bear)

Many of these are newcomers to the field who have somewhere gotten the idea that they can get away with all of these behaviors. (I would bet more than one of them are some of the criers on these boards as well.)

I would LOVE to find someone who is dependable and experienced, who knows how to work and is not looking to take my accounts on a permanent basis; someone who would do as good a job for me as they would want someone else to do for them if they needed some time off. Apparently, they're all working for other companies and are happy, which is great for them.

An easier way...
If you are typing in Word, there is an easier way. Where you have the ?? in your document (I am guessing it is a template), erase the ?? and hit CTRL+F9 This will insert {} Use this throughout the document where you need to insert things. When you load your template, you can hit F11 and it will automatically take you to the next field.
is it easier to use
the CD for the computer...easier to use than the 2007?
This will get much easier sm
I was nervous about first podiatrist as she talked fast, used some not so good English, etc., but after the first few days, I realized she used almost all the same terms repeatedly. I bought a book - don't have it with me now - but one of the  "word books" which helped me tremendously, it covered podiatry as well as other such entities. Just look up on the book search, believe it was a Stedman's. After that first week, I knew exactly what she was going to say next. I made more progress on this account than others. Just hang in there and it will be a breeze. I almost refused to do this account and was very surprised at my progress and earnings. Go with it! It only hurts for a little while. It's only the lower extremities usually and the rest is "history" which you should be able to figure out. It is important in podiatry that they mention diabetes and other such history which would bring on podiatry problems. They only know their own specialty usually and will admit they don't go outside the box much. They are insecure out of their box so you are helping them trememdously. Be patient.
easier yes, but a job
is still a job, and that part is not so pleasurable. but i do think after 30+ years that i would enjoy it much more if i were working only 3-4 hours a day. I still get great satisfaction from doing a job not everyone can, and doing it very well.
do you guys think it would be easier on the

To work a split shift, example 6-10 n then 3-7, OR would it be less painful to get it all done at once so you have more time to rest fully?  My hands kill me constantly.  I've tried everything.  Don't want to be in more pain if the split would end up being worse.  Thanks.

It would be faster and easier to ask
which companies treat their MTs well than to go through the masses that haven't treated people well.
Is doing QA easier than transcribing? nm
nm
It's easier if you are in India, I think. nm
x
I am MT/ME and ME is easier on the hands...

I love ASR (automated speech recognition) aka editing as it's easier on the hands for some (me!!).  It does pay 20% less per line but I'm very fast with editing.  I like it a lot but to each his/her own opinion on it.

Good luck!!

I can tell you how to do it using Autotext, which is easier.

I'm using Word 2003 with Instant Text as my Expander software.  I have been trying to figure out how to insert *stop codes* literally for months using Instant Text.  I finally gave up and here's what I do.  There may be easier ways around it, but I just learned today. lol

I transcribed the report,, which is a pain center report. I get the same doc everyday who has a style that he sticks with pretty much.  After I was finished, I copied the report and went into a new document to tweak it up.  I left in basically all of his  repetitive phrases along with the exam, and all of the headings.  Anywhere I wanted a stop code or field as MS Word calls it, I pressed the combination of ctrl+ F9.  When I  was  finished I highlighted the document and clicked on Autotext.  If you've never used autotext, when you want to retrieve an entry you've created, you start typing the name you've assigned to it, and either press F3 or enter and BAMM there it is.  The stop/field codes look like this {  }, but you can shade them gray.  To access each field you simply press F11 and it takes you right to the next stop. I hope I didn't confuse you.

I just bought a book that is truly a MUST HAVE for MTs working with Word.  It's called Tips N Techniques to boost the productivity of the medical transcriptionist.  It was put together by an MT.  I think you can find it under www.cherylflanders.com.

Good luck!

Rin

Thank you all!!! i do use templates, but its easier for me to just add the cc on the ones i need as
i put the cc: in autotext and it is working like a charm!! i have never used autotext, just autocorrect and it wasn't working in autocorrect. never knew what autotext was about. thank you so much!!!!!
I think that as long as you are available, it is far easier
than learning where to look for things.  When I worked in an office when someone would ask me, I would show them how to look it up.  Somehow, that came across wrong and I got in trouble.  If I asked for help, I wanted to know where to look the next time.  I would sit and run down the entire list of fractures, or whatever, to see if I could find the correct one, rather than leave a blank or have to bother someone.  I think some people have had things done for them for so long, they don't know how and don't care to.
Yes, it gets easier. I do find it to be (NM)
dd
Found an easier way for me
I have the voice file load in ExpressScribe and type it in Word and copy it over. So much faster for me and I can use any of the pedals I have.
