for radiology.  I earn more than that per hour on acute care, but I don't work that many hours a week.  How do you keep your arms healthy?

CPL rate averages
I'm looking for some opinions from more "seasoned" MTs concerning line rates. At my current place of employment I am getting 8 cpl and I have been an MT for about 4 years. I've just been getting so discouraged lately because I feel like I should be making more than I am. What's the average cpl to be made and is it really possible to get higher cpl rates, and what do you have to do to get there? Trying to stay positive here! Thanks in advanced!!!
My line count averages

I have started at a new company, about 1-1/2 ago.  I am finding that with their platform I can average around 1000-1100 lines in 4 or 4-1/2 hours.  That is still with taking a quick break here and there for drink and bathroom, with kids home for the summer.  I am very excited about this because my goal is to do 2000 lines or close to it a day.  Unfortunately, my account is slow right now.  However, when it picks up I am hoping to become a high producer.

It can be done, many MTs do it.  At my other job, I was taking 180 minutes and up a day and getting it done betwee 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. with breaks, etc.  We all have off days, but I think that with persistence, any MT can achieve their goals.

I really hate it when I see that people don't believe that someone can type 300 to 400 lines in an hour or someone can make 60,000 and up a year doing MT.  Believe me, I plan on making the bucks here in about a month or so myself!!!!!

I am an IC who averages about 120 minutes of dictation per day. SM
I am quite familiar with my accounts, and only have to look up occasional words, e.g. new devices, and the dreaded address for the referring physician that the dictator does not bother to take the extra five seconds to give you when the information is directly in front of him! I use no Expanders as the doctors who I transcribe for are not repetitious with their reports. It takes me about 6 hours per day to do 2 hours worth of dictation. I have to be pretty disciplined, but take frequent quick breaks (probably 5-10 minute breaks 5 times) to just stretch, get a drink or grab a bite to eat. Unless you would work a 24-hour stretch and are extremely quick, I don't think 300 minutes is very realistic. I have been doing this for over 20 years, and I can't imagine how your client or company could possibly expect this time frame? Did they just give you the work or have you had it for a while? Good luck. However, without having the actual dictation in front of me, I cannot say for sure. Some doctors can stretch a lot of "BS" out to consume a lot of dictation time, when in reality maybe they only dictated several pages. Speaking for myself, my doctors usually productively dictate for 2 hours worth of typing. I don't know your situation however.
You have to understand though this site averages only around 100 online
users at any given time whereas most companies especially nationals have thousands of employees and/or ICs.

So statistically speaking, these comments (good and bad)represent a very small amount of the national MT population. To me, it seems like the same folks over and over.

I use this site as a guide NEVER as a Bible.

I wouldn't trade being an at-home full-time MT for anything. There are just too many positives that outweigh the negatives.
Yeah, right. Then check with the IRS for national averages.

Zero. If I don't have the dollars, I don't buy it.
House paid off.  Drive old cars.  Make hard choices sometimes, but would rather postpone or do without sometimes for the peace of mind of no debt.  It's not easy, but I highly recommend it!!
TWO dollars?
Just say NO! That is the most ridiculous thing I have heard in weeks. Ortho fills up a lot of the page and I can't believe I am seeing this. Are you living in another country?
And you are willing to pay 100 dollars
to keep the ball rolling?  I don't know... sounds fishy!
Another poll: Regarding our tax dollars.

In view of the increased cost of gasoline, housing, medical care, now heating and electric, when it comes to the tax dollars coming from YOUR income, would you prefer it go to:

A.)  Those on welfare due to bad choices, those on welfare because they refuse to work, those on welfare due to unwed pregnancy, or those receiving governmental aid due to just being elderly and unable to  work, or due to catastrophic illnesses or events such as Katrina.

or

B.) Those elected officials to use for their wives' tummy tucks, their children's daycare, their expensively catered business meetings with other elected officials (including water at $500 a case), their tax-funded trips with their families as "staff", and their million-dollar tax-funded pensions.

I did spend the 400 dollars too
Well, what can I say I just purchased the "software" two days ago.
And in the country I live 400 dollars is two minimun wages.-
So, I basically spent my savings in a promise, but only because I read that Alan is a minister of some kind, I just assumed a Pastor wouldn't be on the internet scaming people...
and I even talked to Alan.
Yes, I tip. Usually a couple of dollars but
if I have a lot of groceries, will make it $3.  But last year on Christmas Eve when I had LOTS of groceries and the store was packed and it was pouring down rain and the sacker got soaked loading my groceries in my car, I gave him $5.
Robotype 3. It's about 8 dollars. nm

Yeah, I would rather my tax dollars go to war. nm

It's probably 40,000 Rupees, not dollars.

dollars and cents
I get 6 cents a line for my work, but I work at MQ and am not an IC.  I have been with them for 1.5 years.  I was wondering myself what they got paid because I was considering getting a part time-full time gig for a second job.  Now a days you almost have to.
ME TOO! I got mine for 4 dollars sm
on ebay. I am also down to my last one!
Canadian Dollars- probably French ESL nm

Yes, every other week, 78 dollars, 2200 sq ft. SM
To me it's worth every penny!
Were you playing dimes, dollars, or what ?
Am going in the next couple of months, and how much had you spent in machines?
At 3cpl, that's only 90 dollars gross. Take out

I'd bet dollars to donuts it'll be a rip-off, no doubt. - nm

if you made less than 600 dollars they don't legally have to claim it.
Just found that out also as last year my IC job only started in October and didn't make enough for taxes. This year will be different though. My employer said consider it free money. Can't argue with that. Checked with H&R Block and they confirmed it.
Depends on the pay and account. My lowest average is $15.52 an hour (roughly 182.6 lines an hour) w
;'
1850 lines per 8 hour shift. 15.00 hour - no real requirement

You are KIDDING? In a city where a 1bdrm condo is 300,000 dollars?
x
Sure, eScription clients are saving a million dollars by

if it is feasable, split that 6-hour shift into two 3-hour shifts. sm
i work a split shift and find that i am much better able to stay focused and get more work done that way. also, being 3 months pregnant you have gone through the very tiring time of pregnancy and you should start seeing an energy perk before long.
Did you sell the Vonage modem to recoup some of your lost dollars?

I would check into a business line. My phone company offers one for around 55 dollars, with truly U
I am going to remove the LD from my home phone, and use the business line for all calls, then I will only have to pay about 35 above what I'm paying now. Not ideal, but the best deal I could find.
Valuable post, thanks. MT plus Skills Upgrade minus Complaining = Dollars. NM

I start an hour or 2 early and then take an hour or 2 for dinner -nm
x
At 200 lines a day for 6 cents, you are making $1.20 a day or 0.15 hour for an 8 hour day!!!--cm
Did you mean 2,000? Even then you would only be making $1.50 if you work 8 hours a day.
$32/hour? You said $36/hour on an earlier post. Either way would be great. n/m

10 reports/hour or 25 markers/hour
NM
I appreciate your responses. I had an option of line vs hour ($14/hour) but if line pays more...nm
nm
65 to 75 an hour comes to $15 an hour if u are fast
nm
from 4:45 to 6:30 a.m. (1 hour 45 min)

I did 556 lines. That's par for the course for me when I use the keyboard rather than VR - 250 to 275 lines per hour. But I'm no macro or expander expert so I type out about 50-75% of the work.

Don't take anything that is not by the hour.

There is no decent line rate for QA.  Hourly only.  If you take the line pay, you will force QA pay down.

really $25/hour
are u really making $25/hour doing transcribing and if you are what office? why are you stating an hourly rate instead of a line rate?
$50 an hour down to $8...whatever

more than $10 hour possible

As independent, I charge 12 to 17 per gross line (average 15/line)-  type 10-12 pages per hour -- 300 plus lines ($30 to $50 per hour).  Have phone-in dictation system.  Deliver hard copies.  Multiple accounts with up to 15 physicians, plus overflow work.  Major account has 40+ reports a day.  Always have work!  Been doing this at home since 1990.  Will not do difficult dictators (or charge more and let them know why).  Also charge for copies/stat reports/faxes and delivery.  Provide quality work.  So, the work and the money are out there!

About $23 an hour. nm
x
I wish they would pay by the hour because with sm
some MTs (new/old) their work is horrific because they try to get their line count and don't care. These companies will learn when they loose accounts or get sued.
12-15 an hour ?
No way! I made more than that 10 years ago! God I hope you're wrong!
$24 an hour?
Oh please tell me where ... thanks ! Joanne
That's $7.50/hour!

under an hour???
OMG you are kidding me, right?  You must be talking about newbies, just out of school.  PLEASE tell me you're talking about newbies just out of school!
$20 an hour...
You make more than $20 an hour at a HOSPITAL? I would never leave the hospital then. I quit my job at "big national" to work for a hospital and made...drum roll...$10 an hour! I lasted 4 months because I felt demoralized. If I could earn $20, I would happy work my butt off for 8 hours a day - no problem! Consider yourself lucky.
per hour pay
I would prefer to be paid by the hour.  In that way I could concentrate more on quality instead of the almighty quantity, meeting quotas and turnaround times.  Doubt we'll see that ever happen though.
what should I do? $16.50 an hour ...

Hi Guys!  I'm an MT with 13+ years of medical records transcription experience.  My job got outsourced and the hospital currently dumped me in a unit clerk position for $15.35 an hour on weekends, and $16.15 for the 3-11 shift.  The work really SUCKS and I miss MT so badly I've taken on some at-home work.

I found a local hospital that wants to give me a job for $16.50 an hour and they won't BUDGE on the money - even though as an MT I was earning $21 an hour.  THis job is 1/2 pathology MT and half lab secretary work.  They won't even go to $17 an hour - $16.50.  They're checking my references - but I'm soooo unhappy with the money.  The pluses are:  the hospital is 5 miles from my home, the hours are Mon-Fri 9 to 5, 2 additional holidays than my current hospital, free parking, free medical (non-union) job with $5 copays and $0 Rx copay.

Yes, those are all significant benefits, but aren't the ripping me off with the money?  And the fact they won't budge at all makes me feel they don't really care about hiring me, or not.  The job has been open for 5 months - can't find an MT to do the secy work, and can't find a secy who CAN HANDLE the MT !  HEre I come, well-experienced in both - and the interview went fantastic!.

So what should I do ?   What do you guys think?

Thanks!  JoJo
