The advice to Google is assuming SM

Posted By: no, don't think so on 2008-09-09

that the MT in question has half a brain and can discern what is a reputable link and what isn't. Or are you saying we shouldn't assume even that much?

I completely agree with the advice below. Without your books, Google.
Just be sure that the entries you find are from a verifiable source; you can also access Dorland's at the Merck website (google Dorland Merck and then add to favs).

I travel frequently and have found MT an easily-adaptable job for this. You'll want to get very used to setting up and taking down your computer quickly, as well as making sure you have the correct cords, etc. Seems like a "duh" thing, but... :)

If you have money and inclination, you might purchase a couple of your most frequently-used Stedman's on CD-ROM and install before you leave on your trip. I have the equipment words, surgery words, and emergency medicine words on CD-ROM that I use without having to have the physical books handy.

Enjoy your trip!
Well, you know what they say about *assuming*. sm
If the OP had wanted to know those things, she should have asked. the first few other posters did not include all that stuff either and you are just picking on ME. I was not trying to *mislead* anyone and posted later on about the specifics. but now you answer a question of mine...how are YOUR gross lines coming??? or can I assume you haven't done it yet? lol. I am not going to argue with you after this post. You always seem to be stirring things up for every body that posts something you disagree with. and you always *assume* to be right, even though you are not. Your opinion does not matter to me, nor does anyone elses. I posted the truth and you did not like it so you had to start trouble. so I am ending it. drop the subject. move on. find someone else to pick an argument with. I am assuming you are not happy unless you are arguing about something anyway, so find someone else to do it with. I won't waste my time on you. go count your gross lines.
Assuming once again
Actually, I have requested information from AAMT, CareerStep, my local community college, and a couple of other places. I'm on this board to talk to actual people who do this job - not those who are out to sell something to me and claim they are the end-all beat-all for information on it.

I wasn't belittling anyone. If me stating "I wasn't looking to change careers, just make some extra cash, what are your experiences in this field" makes you feel belittled you may want to get some help with your self esteem. My goodness.

Yes, I know how forums work. Of course not everyone on here may actually be whom they claim to be, but it would at least give me a general idea of the field and what to expect. Trust me, I will NOT be going into this field. I think my general view is y'all are nuts!
I am assuming there are kiddies, so (sm)
our faves are Nemo, Shrek, Toy STory 1 and 2.  For adults though, just saw Sideways and it's pretty good, but NOT for children.  Have fun! Sounds like a great idea! Can I come?

I'M ASSUMING NOTHING NEW OR SHE WOULD HAVE INFORMED US
Maybe no changes for SE
And you are assuming I am a liar when you don't know

I'm assuming you are in Illinois?? No?? (nm)

But you are assuming I never made any
money and that, my dear, has never been the case. I don’t work with you, now days no one works with others in this field. I do not have to like the ESLs dictation. I don’t care to visit India because I frankly am tired of constantly having to transcribe. Glad you are working at home doing what you like, being by yourself.
Assuming it's XP or older
Hit the Windows logo button, go into control panel, and from there click on appearance/themes. Go to choose a screen saver. From that window, the bottom half has the power saver options; I believe it says monitor options, but it will also include the options for your hard drives. In there, you can find the choices as to whether or when to shut down the hard drive, hibernate, time to turn on the screen saver, etc. Vista is probably similar steps, but I'm not sure how exactly you get to the screen saver page.

Hope that helps!
Thanks! I'm assuming that was a typo, you
meant *hook up to both MONITORS* I hope....

But thanks for giving me a starting point....I'm gonna ask about that switch the Best Buy near my house...

Thanks again!
I'm assuming you installed the software that came with?
If so, and don't laugh, did you try rebooting? I always do that first before I worry about any computer issues. If it doesn't take care of it then go back and make sure you followed the installation steps exactly. Is it the Mircrosoft Natural Ergonomic 4000? I have that and it's great...only thing I could complain about is it's rather wide, so when I do need to use my mouse, my arm has to reach a little farther, which isn't good ergonomically, but I do everything I can to avoid using the mouse anyway...oops, I digress! Good luck with your keyboard!
Yep, google has it goin on... I really like the google earth...
Have you tried Google earth? You can type in any address, street, city, state, country, etc. and it will zoom in and show the area and then you can hit the + button and zoom right in and see the exact house, building, etc. that you are looking for.
Mainly Google; I google the known words in the phrase (sm)
That's my most frequent tactic if I don't find the word in my word books. I'll play with leaving certain words out and adding them in, in various combinations, to try to get a hit that has a word which sounds like my blank. If I get a hit, I'll Google WITH that word, and see what hits I get, and what their source is (i.e.,checking the sources out for reliability). When I say 5 sites or searches, I mean I don't often try more than 5 different combinations without a serious hit. If I get a hit, then I will spend a little more time checking that out before I give up.

If it's a drug name, I use RxList, or more frequently the Drugs.com website. Since they redid RxList, I haven't found one that has quite as good a wildcard search, but Drugs.com works okay most of the time.

If it's a place name (like when they give names of outlying outreach clinics and etc.) I'll use Mapquest and look up the city my hospital is in, then "pan out" and look at the outlying towns.

Hope that's what you're looking for. I do have bookmarks, but I find that even the ones I think I'll visit again, I waste more time doing that than with an intelligent google search. An example is the time I was looking for "banana bag." The only place I managed to find it with a degree of reliability was on a nurses' message board. I've found quite a bit sometimes on the various specialty message boards out there, but I think the quickest way to locate that is through a search engine rather than bookmarking each individual site and trying to figure out which ones to search for a particular term.
I know! And did you see the way she jumped down my throat assuming that I was talking about HER!
Talk about soapbox. But I do agree with you
This is just a sarcastic guess, but I'm assuming by the line - sm
why else would there be so many mistakes. If they were paid by the hour, maybe they would spend more time on getting to know the ENGLISH language. I actually had a report come back from India where instead of the word "children" it said "litter."
You're assuming she doesn't want more children. nm

Assuming you are talking about wireless internet. nm
nm.
I was on it for a long time - it's generall OK, assuming it's
@
That is assuming they could even understand the dictation to begin with.
I would love to see the doctors having to listen to dictation.
Why? It sounds like you're assuming the generated reports contain...sm
incorrect or fabricated information. Such would not be the case in these situations.
I am assuming you are talking about Sheri. What answers of hers are not lining up?
What info do you have that I do not or others? Never heard of you either, American regular MTstarser??? Strange posted by if you ask me.
Assuming your existing documents are based on the Normal template...
You can open the Normal template, make the changes you mention, and then save it. When you open your existing documents, they will be corrected. Hope this is the info you're looking for.
Advice to YOU..1st learn to spell before insulting poster and trying to give advice...sm

Sound advice from a fellow MT if you want advice or support (sm)

I have been an MT for over 10 years.  I also am getting burnt out, tired of my job, day in day.  However, I do love transcription and make excellent money at it, have grossed over $50,000 per year the last 5 years.  I decided to go back to nursing school and am very happy with my choice.  However, over these 10 years of transcription I have had my ups and downs.  My biggest issue with being at home working is lack of socialization, being home day in and day out with just the kids and the animals really gets to a person, sure hubby is home at night and thinks working from home is the easy life, thus the return to school and boy has my overall enjoyment of life changed once I realized I was the problem, not everyone else and I needed to find myself again.

Anyway, my biggest advice to you three-fold:

1.  Get into counseling for yourself, find out who you are and what your needs are, whether or not you think you need to, I sense you are feeling overwhelmed and need someone other than your family to talk to that can be nonjudgmental to your feelings and needs.

2.  If you're only making $100 after you pay preschool you can either keep doing it and be miserable, or quit because you are lucky enough to have a husband who can support the family without your income. (See how fast his mind changes just by losing the income you do have as to whether your job means anything.)  Or look for a different company or office that you like more and are more productive if you really want to do transcription (lots of fish in the sea as far as companies).

3.  Find a local "mom's" group where you can get out and socialize.  MOPS (mother's of preschoolers) is an excellent one that is nationwide, they have a website.  Also Mom2Mom is in a lot of areas.  They provide a once a week time for moms with kids the same age to get together, socialize, (some offer spirtual guidance some don't) and each week a different mom takes a turn watching everyone else's children at the facility that hosts it so the other moms can talk about things they have in common.  Every stay-at-home and work-from-home mom needs to socialize with adults, without their kids, or they will have a nervous breakdown eventually no matter how much they love their kids.

Sorry so long but it does get better but you have to take the first step at making yourself happy.

If the OP had done a google, she would have...
SEEN the answer to her question.  People need to learn how to fish for themselves.  Giving quick answers doesn't teach them a thing, and it certainly doesn't help them in the long run.  I'm not trying to berate you for offering an answer, so please don't be offended.  It is just that learning/knowing how to effectively research is a VERY important part of being an efficient and good MT.
google.com

Tia,

use www.google.com as a search engine (the best) type in exactly what you are looking for and see what you get- if you don't find exactly what you are looking for- keep searching but slightly change the search phrase.

I did google them and they are
still around $600. That is out of my price range right now. Maybe someday...
google map

yep, a totally new addiction.  I entered my nephews addy and just realized he is only 3.5 miles from the White House!  No wonder I kept seeing the Washington Monument every time we got on that nightmare highway system

Go look at your favorite amusement park like Cedar Point in Ohio...you can actually see the roller coasters in 3D!

Google? If Google, just go to google.com
and download their toolbar. They usually have several options! Happy Googling. If its goggling, I can't help you!
Google

Merry Christmas, everyone!

Could anyone explain the Google page to me?  I mean the "Google" header with the cat and mouse.  I usually enjoy their little embellishments for the different holidays, but I can't figure out what this is supposed to be.

I had to Google your
phrase, as I was not familiar with it. Now that I know, all I have to say is...'I resemble that remark'...
That is a Google ad.

You are probably trying Google..

Maybe you should google it if

Google

Pretty neat the term *google* has made it to the dictionary!

Google

I have been using Google Suggest to narrow down search results.

GOOGLE
i like Lycos.com
Google

Does anyone know of a site like Google that transcrptionists can use for researching.  I have always used Google, but lately it seems to be getting slower and slower, plus they have a Pop-Up status on that is driving me crazy and can't get rid of.

TIA

Google
Google "radiology terminology" and you will get some sites.

I've had the book Stedman's Radiology and Oncolocy Words for over a decade and it's my bible. There are newer editions. When in doubt in the middle of a report, I Google the word/phrase/drug I'm looking for if it isn't in Stedman's.

Good luck!
Google
I found my current job with a small MTSO by a Google search for "medical transcription" followed by my state.
I went on google and put in--
complaint form sample and it came up with all kinds of things. some of them you pay for, others you don't. you just have to read and find what is right for you. good luck!
google
I use Google and mine seems fine.
Google.
I typed in Lanier LX-219-1 with VTI  and got lots of hits. You should be able to find something.
Google it.
xx
Google it
nm
Have you tried to Google this?
I always check Google before posting questions like this on the board. I just checked it before posting this answer and there are lots of hits. Try looking at some of them and you may find the answer you're seeking here. Good luck.
did you google? NM
.
I think that's ok....also from google
Vibration sense was tested with a 128-Hz tuning fork. .... were left-right flipped to correspond to the other patients with left-sided anesthesia. ...

Google

I also Google the name...just type in the doctors name, and then the state that they are in, and it usually brings up their address.  I don't know if anyone posted this one or not, but here is the link to one that I use also...
