Very legit questions though really. I live up north (don't want to say exact state, but about in the middle for cost of living comparitively). My mortgage is $1350/mo, which right now is 68% of our household's income before taxes. I know what you mean about being scared from seeing the money suddenly drop. My husband was taking home $2400 a month up until last October. Now, he isn't taking home more than $250 a month if lucky. He is self-employed, so no unemployment either. That is a drop of almost $2200 a month. Although, I do feel scared sometimes, overally I am happy to have a job where I can support my family, whether I make much or not, as long as we can pay our bills and feed our mouths, we are happy as can be :)
