Wow. After reading all of these sad situations and posts I actually feel pretty blessed. I did sm

Have my car repoed about 8 years ago and it was the most embarrassing moment of my life. I've since come out of a rut with me working and having a husband who works FT. We are blessed. We have definitely struggled with our bank acct. being overdrawn to the tune of 700.00 before, but we luckily came out of that and it only happened once. To everyone who is in a dire situation, may you find grace and peace in God. Believe in miracles. Don't give up. Good luck to you and I mean that in all sincerity.

really warms my heart. It really makes no sense for these MTs to get into such a tizzy about some simple questions. It is nothing personal, after all. One good thing about this is we get to work from home and do not have to meet these people in the office each day. My goodness!!! Just think about what your life would be like then, a constant unheaval. What tickles me is when others (who don't know you) tell you you have a problem. I never assume, not a good thing. The only problem I have is around the end of my work day and my little cat walks in wanting some petting and I am trying to wind up my day. Merry Christmas to all. Hope this New Year brings you much happiness, love and security like the last 6 have been for me when I married the love of my life.
After reading most of the posts below..sm
I would just like to say that it probably just depends on the program the office/hospital uses and the doctor's choice of how they want it done.  Where I work the doctors could still dictate and I could still transcribe it and then the reports could be scanned into the EMR if that is what they had chosen to do, but it wasn't, and my position is being phased out.  Lots of different ways of doing this type of thing, and unfortunately saving money is more appealing than having a finished report that looks and reads decent, so bypassing the Transcriptionist seems to be the way our area doctors are going.
I think you're reading way to much into these posts.

I love reading your posts..and having my own feelings
You are so right
From reading these posts, these QA people are scary....

I have been reading some posts about people using AutoCorrect and ESP...sm
I use my ESP constantly and couldn't live without it. I add several daily and have been doing so for years. Why would I use AutoCorrect also? I am wondering if I am missing out on some added benefit. Could someone explain please? Much appreciated!
after reading supervisor posts below where they are transcribing too, it does beg the question of
if you got to keep the work in turn around and you know you are going to have to do it along with supervising, you have the ability to cherry pick and no one will know. double dipping in transcription while picking up salary for managing should not be allowed.

I feel kinda lazy reading your post as i'm content just

Where I feel crazy, I set a goal of around 300 lines an hour (ha! not with these dictators but 250 is still good), every two hours make a snack to get me moving.  I love juicing veggies and making fruit smoothies in the blender, coffee makes me nuts.  I also do calisthenics (sp?) every couple of hours for about three minutes to keep my blood flowing and keep toned.  I walk the dog two times a day for about 10 minutes to get energized from the sun and keep a good color.  I take an hour break to watch good ol Judge Judy, and fix myself something nice n yummy, and after Judy I crank out my last hour called the 'power hour' where I take no prisoners and smoke comes off my keyboard!  Like a race to the finish line.

I can't see how you could do the 20 and the 10 minute clean break, that would slow me down!  Maybe I should take cleaning breaks, because I never want to clean when I have a block of time off and the dirt just collects.

Poor baby! I feel stressed just reading your thread. SM
I doubt anyone realizes going in just how very long it's going to take to become competent (after all, only nuts would apply), and the very long hard haul to even decent earnings is gruelling enough on its own.

Then to have to deal with all that! If you can't fix it (try) and decide you can't live with it, don't quit the industry--take the experience you've already invested in and look for a small operation to train further with, either local or on-line. I started with a small office owned and run by two sisters, lovely sweet women who made the amazing experience of struggling to get good enough to bring in minimum wage (!) endurable. Best wishes!
Wow!...after reading her previous thread, I feel sorry for the kid about to be born into this drama!

That's pretty funny because i feel sorry for you too. Sorry that you won't be in this career
because you have no clue!! For your information..i don't sit in the house alone..i actually go out and get drunk and have fun A LOT! The drinking part comes from dumb MTs i'm sure! You are very very sad person! Take a course in transcription or at least get yourself a text book. Learn how to do your job before you cut down someone elses!!
that is pretty much how I feel, just wondered if I was wasting time. nm

Goggle.com and enter various phrases to get articles and companies.  I use a free doanload of ExpressScribe, yep, it is free. They have a number of various software things on their site to read and perhaps one will fit. The express Scribe is a piece of sotware to download, it is very simple and I like simple. You can listen and transcribe various voice file formats. You can use a wav pedal one is called a serial pedall and I think it is 9 pin and plugs in the back of PC and also another pedal I think a 15 pin wav pedal and goes in the USB port in front.  However, you can also use it without a pedal and it works fine.  You use a couple of key to stop, pause, rewind, I forget the key.  There are a lot of pedals so don't just jump in.  On this site you may benefit from emailing the company after reading and rereading, even if you don't understand.  .

sometimes these situations
can be a blessing, by causing us to realize we can't do it on our own, that we NEED God...and again we learn to TRUST and depend upon Him.
Sometimes there are situations where
"forgive and forget" don't work. Leaves it up to all parties involved to work with the best solution. Gifter may have solid, personal reasons for having issues. I can relate. You have to respect that.
I also have been in these situations before sm
I have been working at home now for 17 years. My kids are 18 and 16 now, the 18 year old in college; however, while growing up both were athletes and in every sport year around. I have seen other kids who never had a parent at their games or special occasions. My kids always appreciated the fact that I was there, never missed a game or event, and always home when they got home from school. That in itself is reward enough.

It brought about a sense of love and security, at least for my two kids, while growing up and knowing Mom is always there. They could call me at lunch or after school before practice if they needed something, etc.

It grounded them and brought stability into their lives and they excel academically.

All-in-all, I would never trade this profession for anything else. It has paid off big time for me.

Now, I just have to wait about 10 years or so for grand kids and the cycle will start all over again!

Isnt' this one of the main reasons, we who have children, work at home?!!!

Those situations different than STAYING in bad
Robbery or scamming are an in and out situation that you have little control over.  Staying in a bad job is usually a long term situation that you CAN control.  It is hard to change jobs.  However, the longer you put off starting the process, the longer you are allowing yourself to stay in a bad situation. It is sad to think you would give someone else such control over your life that you let yourself be abused. And the only one that can change something like that is YOU.  The buck stops with you when it comes to who has control of your life.
There have been similar situations posted before.
I'd be looking for another job and if they owe you any money I'd start trying to get it.  Send a certified letter, contact labor department, etc.
In true IC situations, the company CANNOT set your hours...
However, your contract can stipulate that you do a certain amount of work within a certain timeframe.  They also can ASK you for a general idea of when you will be working, but they cannot make you/tell you that you have to be working certain hours.  If they tell you when you have to work, you are not longer an INDEPENDENT contractor - "independent" being the keyword here.  If they set the hours, you are an employee.
You seem like a person who can look ahead and do analysis of situations...

you definitely should take the at home job. You will make significantly more money as long as you actually are on the keyboard. I think it's a surprise sometime as to how much time is actually spent transcribing and how much is wandering around. If you time yourself at home, just to take the laundry out of the dryer can add up to 10 minutes in no time. So take that into consideration. You won't get paid for 8 hours - you'll only be paid when your fingers are actually making contact with the keyboard.  Check your line production at work if you can to get an idea of how many lines you are actually cranking out in a day.

Now, that being said, you need to take a good long look at what is coming down the pike for MT. In all reality, MT is not going to last until you retire. Don't forget, what is left of MT is going to have to be either a) spread around amongst all of us or b) competed for by all of us. When there are more MT's than MT jobs, you can bet pay and working conditions is going to go down. So right now, while you have a job, you need to be thinking and planning where you are going to be when you lose your MT job and can't find another - or at least another that pays decent...Ask yourself, what would I do if next year I lose my job? and start exploring options that way. Me - I'm enrolled full time in nursing school for a BSN. I wasn't sure I could go back to school at 46, but I am and doing it quite successfully, no less. I still have at least 15 more years to work before retirement...so just plan ahead...

Did you ever notice how many real life situations (sm)

there are where you can say it reminds you of a Seinfeld episode?!  I still watch reruns - never get sick of it.

Not all 8 cents a line situations are created equal sm
I am coming off a job using Extext and going into one using ChartNet. I have used Smart Type for over a decade and for Chartnet I have to go to Instant Text. I am able to do over 200 lines an hour after about a week at the new job. I will get to 300 again in a month or so. I say again because I have not done that much in a long time.

Extext...I loved it when I first used it, but after 18 months I can't get above 170 lph and that is with echoes and normals with lots of free lines, and that includes dozens of normals and report shells I have made myself. It won't get better and that is poor pay at the 8.5 cpl base rate, but then again I always have bonuses of a couple of kinds and shift differentials...but I can't do better than 1200 lines a day with any consistency, not in 8 hours a day.

I work a job in MedRite. Like Extext, it is a Word client and rather similar. Top rate for MedRite is close to 300 lines an hour on a horrid account with 80% PLUS ESLs. It is just a faster platform.

Enter ChartNet...never used it. Had to switch to Instant Text...never used it. I have been working about 5 days on it and I can do 200 lph and only one doctor so far who throws me for a loop when I can't do that. She is not an ESL, but a slurring motor mouth who skips around and forgets what she is doing on the phone in the first place.

The Extext work has been 90% OP notes, my specialty. The others are all the basic 4, and I have to say that I went from clinic for many years to OP notes, skipping the rest in between. I have very little experience in DS, CN and H&P notes, VERY little time with those. I'd be faster with them if I had done more of them before.

Part of speed is the expander, part is the platform and part is you. It doesn't matter how great you are as a typist and how perfect your expander, if the platform isn't very good you can't make money at any line rate. If the platform is good, but you are not Expander savvy, you won't you make it either. You can, however, be like me and a poor typist with a great expander and a decent platform...and STILL make money. LOL

In MY experience, the largest problem with making more money is the expander GLOSSARY, not which program you choose. I have heard some of the craziest stories about how to use an expander while on this board...ridiculous, wonky, time wasting, counter intuitive toro pu pu!!!! If you are struggling with an expander FEEL FREE TO EMAIL ME. I am happy to spend my time helping anyone who will genuinely give my methods a shot.
Life's full of situations where you're backed into a corner
a winner thinks outside the box and takes a chance rather than be ASSURED of a life-time of misery.

You're the type of people who live in the same town their whole life even when there are no jobs and complain that they're unemployed.

Complacency will get you nowhere, neither will whining about having no money when there are other options but you refuse to look into them.

Your employer may be partially responsible for the trouble in your life right now but the only person keeping you in this mess is you.
Interesting! Fiber is used in constipation and diarrhea situations, which I always thought was

Situations change. We are all in this for the money. Loyalty is great but appreciation (monetarily
And be honest. This is a financial issue and a matter of there is only so much time in one day. They may be shook up for a bit but in the end, they will remember you for the work you produced and your day to day performance and personal character traits. Give them plenty of time to find someone new if you are very fond of them and, in this case, you could offer to train the new person.
Proof positive that an hourly rate would eliminate those types of situations.

Just do a search and read the posts. There are plenty of posts about OSI on this board. nm.

I think I'm pretty bright and pretty good, too, but
I am not a CMT. I am a medical transcriptionist who enjoys her job very much (most days). I have chosen not to pursue certification simply because I cannot afford to do so. I believe the certification is a nice thing to have, but I don't believe it is necessary for employment or for excellence in my job. If you can afford it, go for it. If you can't, don't feel too bad. You can still take pride in and do a very good job without it.
Way to go!!! You are blessed.
Wish everyone could be that appreciated.
Those who have both are very blessed! nm

God has blessed me greatly too!!

Congratulations on being so blessed.
I work for a national. I don't make $35 an hour, but that's okay, too. I pretty much enjoy my job, I love being at home, have a good supervisor and feel blessed to be able to choose to work from home. I am glad for you, though, and wish you the best.
I could not have been blessed with a more wonderful
father. He is a good, loving, Christian man. Worked hard all his life to take of his wife and 3 daughters. He is now 80 years old and I can still call on him whenever I need him. I live across the street from my parents and have sort of become the "parent" now in that I watch out for them and they, in turn, watch out for me. I am so blessed.
If you were "privileged and blessed" ...sm

I certainly envy you....you're 1 in a million.  Most would not feel that way.  This is just too tough a question as there are so many variables.  I know my decision is coming soon, and I just hope I make the one I can live with.  I actually bought a house with 2 living areas with that in mind but.....as the time approaches and she becomes more and more obstinate and difficult to handle, it's a very scary thought.  I just pray she goes in her sleep still healthy.

Consider yourself very blessed to be making
8 cpl and only an MT since January. I have been an MT for about 7-1/2 years and working for the same well-known national company for 6 and still only make 8 cpl. I have taken on a part-time job in a completely different field to make extra money and am even contemplating making the other job fulltime and working even less than I do now the national. I don't know of any what to increase your earnings as an MT.
I agree - blessed

I agree with the positives.  I too make awesome money (3-4K) per month and besides that have been able to watch my children grow up and be here when they get home from school.  It is less stressful on our family life and allows more time to spend with my husband at night.  I too do not have to buy clothing, minus the jeans to go into the office to pick up work, and do not have to worry about when the kids are sick, can still work, etc.  It has been an extreme blessing in my life, and I will do it as long as possible.

I don't think there are many jobs where you can make great income, have flexible scheduling, wear jeans to work or work in pajamas, and make dinner all in the "regular work day."  Not to mention I type outside in the summer by the pool, great idea!!!! Makes for a nice office!!!

Blessed in many ways here as well.
If we sit back and count the many good things that have come I would have to agree they far outweight the "bad" things.  My kids were off all this week from school.  I went to pick-up work and the office manager says to me "Your children are off all week from school?"  I said, "Yes due to the holiday on Monday and then conferences all week."  She says, "Well I guess that's okay for you since you DON'T WORK" as she's handing me a stack of "work".  She goes on to say "But what about all of the other mother's who have to work?"  What do they do for daycare?"  I said, "Well, I guess it puts those mother's in a very tight spot?"  Hmmmmm.....  Funny the perceptions people have of us work-at-home transcriptionists.  It is almost like if you do it from home it cannot possibly be work.  Let it be known that I love what I do, but I still consider it very much contributing to society.  By the way, thanks to your sister that factory stays doing what it should be doing, and thank your sister for ME personally for putting in the time and showing that she cares by going to work each and every day no matter how tired she gets!  Thank you for sharing....
You are blessed, for sure! Enjoy it! nm

Count yourself blessed....sm
A long time ago, before I ever started with national companies, I could have written your post almost word for word. I felt that I "needed" to go with a national company because it seemed to be the thing to do. If what you are doing works for you, then by all means keep on keepin' on. You are one of the fortunate ones who likely will not be affected by all the new "technological advances" that MT has made.
You are blessed. Congrats to you and hubby

I was blessed with long lean....

muscular legs, which I still have, even at 45.  I can sit cross-legged like a kindergartner listening to a story, BUT, lately I can't get up without hobbling around like a newborn horse for 5 minutes.  It's like this horrid painful stiffness.  What the heck is it?

and a bountiful blessed Thanksgiving to YOU as well. nm
