Yes you can switch computers...
Short of plugging and unplugging the USB ports you can get a KVM-Switch. This is a little control panel and you change with just the push of a button. I fill in a an office where they have one screen set up with one keyboard and mouse yet there are two drives, one mains system drive and the second is actually a dictation system. I switch between them just by pushing a button both are running at same time so you could switch accounts.

Here is a sample. Some cost more but you might find it cheaper. This one is $50.

About the word 2003 do you have your Discs that came with computer, you could load like that, but you might have problems loading with the license agreement.
Try a KVM switch. I have 2 computers, 1 for work and
1 for personal use. The KVM switch allows me to move back and forth between the 2 computers with just a couple key strokes. You also won't have 2 monitors, keyboards, etc., sitting around. I think I bought my switch at a local Best Buy.
Moving or copying IT glossary to another computer

I'm not sure if this is what you are looking for, but I recently copied one of my IT glossaries to a different computer by this method using a CD ROM disk (a jump drive would also work):

Scroll down the page where it says "moving IT to a new computer":

I have cable Internet and two computers
The cable guy who determined I need a new router said something about Linksys having a G and N (models?) and that the N was faster, but I usually get good advice here and want to know a little bit more before I go to the store and get hit up by the salesman. :)
to hook 2 computers to cable internet do ?
you need a router and a KVM switch - what else?  Will this cause problems?
can you have both computers logged into the internet at the same time with this setup?(nm)

KVM switch for computer
Anyone use a KVM switch to keep their own monitor and keyboard, yet switch between 2 computer towers?  Also, can the second computer tower be easily connected to the internet..?
I have a KVM switch and using cable for my high-speed internet so what i needed ... SM

to connect my second computer to the internet was simply the ethernet cord along with the KVM switch box.  I actually work with a router, but it was simple to set up and works like a charm.

what if one computer goes out...can you switch to the other manually

But since you can switch so easily from one to the other, I just use my email on my main computer &

When buying a new computer would you use a company locally that builds new computers or go with Dell
or a large outfit like that. This local company has been around awhile. Not sure what to do about buying a new computer that is going to be compatible with just about all MT jobs.
I would switch your dial up provider before you spend a lot of money updating computer. sm
that particular provider you mentioned puts lots of unnecessary "crap" on your computer.
What can cause computer to lose internet connection off and on.

Copying IT

Can anyone give me an idea on how to copy my Instant Text onto a flash drive so I can use it on another computer if I want to.  If I leave my present job using the company computer and use my own computer I would hate to have to put all of my Expanders in over again.  What a pain that would be!!

IT copying thanks

Amanda your help was appreciated.  It worked out great!

They are copying webpages (sm)
Found BBQ Beef sandwiches at Recipetown.com and Beef Ox sandwiches at foodloversweb.com.
copying tapes
We did that for awhile because I was trying to help a friend to start out in the business and I also gave work to other people on the internet, but it is a lot of work.  Thank God, my husband did most of the work, but thanks, but no thanks.
copying tapes
it is a lot of work and you lose the quality of the tape, if that is possible with some of the doctors.
Copying data
Can anybody say how to copy a large amount of data to a DVD without having to copy one page at a time. It's a training program that I'm not going to be able to finish before the time runs out.  Since I paid for it, I want to be able to have it available to study on my own.  Thanks.
One time when copying and pasting
from a previous report to get a sample of the PE, I noticed that the MT had put in spaces at the end of the sentence and throughout the whole next line instead of hitting enter twice. I never said anything, but I wondered if that MT would ever get caught for that. My company pays for spaces so I'm sure that can add up if he/she does that all the time.
Copying Word Autotext? Can anyone help?
Can anyone tell me how to copy my autocorrect entries?  Word help says to make it into a template but don't know how to do that.  I'd appreciate any help very much!
copying macros to other comp

this is for MS word.   copy normal.dot both from template folder and office folder and paste it to new computer at the same respective places, i.e. copied from template would be pasted to template folder of new computer and so on.

RE: Copying AutoCorrect entries SM
Can someone tell me how to copy AutoCorrect and AutoText entries from one computer to another - I want to put them on my laptop.  Thanks!
copying word into Emdat

You should never copy straight from word into Emdat....you should make you templates in notepad...you can even copy from Word to notepad and then into Emdat...or if you have something saved in Word, you can copy and paste it into you comment box on the Emdat screen and then cut it from there into your Emdat, but if you copy something from Word into Emdat, it will usually mess it up on the client's end (I leaned that the hardway).

I hate Emdat too...especially the spellchecker, and you just can't do as much with it as you can in word...I copy all my completed transcription into Word to double check it with the Word spellchecker to make sure it caught everything, which it usually doesn't.

I hope this is helpful and made sense, but it is a crapy plantform for transcriptionists, but it must be beneficial for the doctors end, otherwise, I'm not sure why it's even used!

Help with Copying and Printing Shorthand Dictionary

I am trying to copy and print my ShortHand Dictionary (the list of expanders) and cannot seem to find the way to do it.  Can anybody help on this one.  By the way, Happy National Transcription Week!

TIA.

Copying tapes to digital format
Has anyone ever attmpted to do this? I am getting a little overwhelmed with the amount of work and want to get some subcontractors and feel it would be easier to go digital rather than delivering the tapes, etc. Thanks for you help and opinions.
Also, back up your AutoText by copying Normal.dot SM
Search for normal.dot on your computer. Usually it is under Program Files (click my computer, click C: drive, click program files), Microsoft Office, click Templates and then you should see normal.dot. Right click it, click "copy" and then put on a disk so if you have to reinstall Word you have a copy of your normal.dot that has all the stuff you've saved (exams, etc.) so you won't have to go through setting them up again.

Searching for .acl (using the search program on the Start menu) will show you your AutoCorrect file. Copy this (right click, copy) and also put it on a disk.

Do these whenever you make significant additions or changes, probably about once a week. I'm using disks, but my son says that I could get a thumb drive or whatever, and I could add and delete things from it, since the space on the disk I am taking up saving these 2 files is miniscule.

Also, you should copy to disk all your documents (like samples, templates sent by your job, doctor lists--anything and everything you use to work.) Then if you have to install Word or install Word on a different computer, you can just replace the *acl on that computer and the normal.dot with your saved versions and have everything there, and also have all your templates and lists etc.

My computer crashed after deleting a TRIAL VERSION of Microsoft Office 2003. Without saved normal.dot and .acl, I'd have had to re-do all that work and all the doctor samples. You never know when an update or any old think will set off this Microsoft stuff. You can lose the stuff you need and so it is really good to have it saved on disk.
copying or transferring Extext expanders
I'm moving to a different MTSO and would like to copy all (probably 20,000) of the expanders/abbreviations I've created over the years.  Hopefully, I can copy these on to a disk and transfer them to the my new MTSO, which utilizes Bayscribe.  It wouldn't be much fun having to re-create these.  Help, anyone?
Internet based transcription - need advice on how to go internet
Can anyone offer any help/advice on how go about becoming internet based from a call in system, or how to keep the call in system for the docs and put transcriptionists on the internet?  Not sure where to start to get information on how to go about doing this. Any help will be appreciated.  Thanks.
If you want to work on the internet from home, take an internet course
But only from Andrews School or M-TEC. Many companies will waive the 2-years' experience requirement and will test and hire you if you go to either of those schools. Do NOT bother with At Home Professions, Penn Foster, US Career Institute, or ESPECIALLY Trans-Am, which is also known as Trans-SCAM and is a total ripoff. You will have a VERY difficult time getting hired without experience unless you choose Andrews School or M-TEC. Yes, they cost more, but that's because they are excellent training programs, not "correspondence courses."
Is it their computer? Why are they installing a firewall and autocorrect on your computer? That sm
is usually the responsibility of the transcriptionist, especially if an IC or SE.  Which company?
Question about transfering computer into to another computer.. sm

I have a dumb question - Just bought a new computer and someone told me to get a flash drive to transfer all my info.  But I'm assuming that ExText that I work off of and Escription will have to be downloaded again by the tech people onto my new computer.  I can tranfer these can I?

Thanks

How does one find out the computer specs on my computer?

I should know this, but I just don't remember how to do this.  I am hoping I have enough RAM, or whatever, to load work platform on my own computer and begin working on it, rather than paying *rent* on the company-furnished computer.  Thanks so much.

A computer is a computer, whether it be laptop or desktop.
I have both and use both and I bought both of mine...most companies do not provide computers...
computers
You can get 56K modems for 5.00 now. We build our own and each piece of hardware we put in, including the case, are warrantied separately so if something breaks, you aren't fighting companies and having to send back the whole thing. It's much cheaper to do it yourself and really very easy.

I use Dell laptop with DSL, VPN and Lanier. No problems. Had problems with VPN and Hewlet/P.
I only buy 1 and put it on 2 of my computers- nm

I really think in the age of computers

I think this is why EMR has become popular.  My daughter has been typing on the computer since she was 4-years-old.  My son is a pretty quick typist at 12 years of age.

My PCP uses his computer, but a lot of times PCPs do not use transcriptionists at least in my state/experience.  It is mostly specialists.  I have noticed the bigger the practice/facility, the larger the transcription company.

Part of an ortho practice I transcribed for went with C-Bay because they wanted to go digital and have 24-hour TAT; however, three out of seven physicians were older and still used tapes.  It all depends on the circumstance and preference.

We have 3 computers
using the wireless router and we would sometimes get this problem. We are allowed up to 5 computers to be used on the router. However, sometimes when my kids were downloading or IM-ing, the router was treating those tasks as another computer on the network. So when I went to get online, the router would think there were already 5 computers on and not allow me to connect to the internet. I used to have to unplug router to reset it and then I could get online. Kids are more careful now about logging off and/or shutting off computers, and we haven't had a problem since.
It may be different on different computers.
You can find it easily by going to search and typing in *.acl.
computers
Hello:  Try Tigerdirect.com and see if they have any computers with Windows XP, do not believe they have Dells, but they have other brand name computers that are just as good.  Also, that site you can build your own and it is not really expensive either.
HP is the best. All 3 of our computers are HPs.
My desktop that I work on is an HP, and I have never had a single problem with it. It's about 2 years old. I also just got a brand new HP laptop for X-mas. My husband's desktop is also an HP that is a little less than a year old. We have always gone with HP and have never been let down! My parent's even just bought a new HP. You can get some really good deals on them.
I just use two computers...
I have a switch box and it works great.
XP computers.........
Tiger Direct has desktop and laptops with XP. Lenovo and Acer are also very good computers with a lot of bang for the buck. Tiger Direct usually has some of the best prices around on lots of stuff.....
2 computers
I do use 2 computers, but that only because I have both programs loaded on my desktop and on my laptop (for when I want to be away from the house). I have not had a problem with both programs loaded on the either computer, however.
Some computers are noisier than others
Other poster on the mark with the vacuum. Disconnect all the wires (a drag I know) remove cover and vacuum the inside - failing that, get a can of air and blow the dust off (through the vents). Sometimes fans are sort of banging into things and can be adjusted, sometimes not.
