Direcway
I have Direcway too!!  I also live on the outside of every where (about an 1 hour south east of Erie PA) to get anything other than dial-up.  I like Direcway, but it is rather expensive.  I look at it this way--with the higher speed the more work I can get done, which equals more pay
Direcway
I use it too with dial-up as back-up. Like any other isp it has it's moments but for the most part is reliable. I figure the expense is just part of doing business and partially deductible. Very stubborn with FTP sites at times.
Direcway

I too have this internet connection for the same obvious reasons.  I live in a rural area of Washington.  The local cable/phone companies say  the population will not support DSL out here.  Like that is going to change for me or we even have cable available. So for now I guess i will chase away all the hunters and talk the critters out here into mulitpling.

I do know that Direcway offers several different types of devises i will refer to as a "modem".  I have made some upgrades in this area and what a difference it has made. Downloads and uploads are very quick and I seldome have a problem downloading files for work.  My internet connection is better than the TV service. It is more consistant.  I am told that one of the TV satilite companies are offering Earthlink DSL.  Again, not in my area. Check yours out.

Cell coverage out here is nonexistant with the exception of Nextell.  At this point Sprint will not get a signal out here.  While they work out the aspects of business i hope they include this feature.  Untill then you need to make the 13 mile trek to town to use the cell phone.

Bottom line is, when we live way out like we do, we dont have choices.  Nor would i move to town.

We have directway and we are not happy with it. They sold the company and now they only allow so much broadband with that you can use. It is only about 200 worth and when that runs out you start getting page cannot be displayed. We are actually changing over to Dish network.

I would do your research on this before jumping into it.

DirecWay Drop-offs
Thanks for the tip. It looks like Direcway has a new upgrade from the 6000 model...more money of course. I will need to do something, as 3 days at half-production is just too miserable.
DirecWay and Starband are the 2 main

dealers.  Depending on your ISP you may be able to get it through your ISP.  I use Earthlink and they offer satellite through DirecWay.  I used to have DW satellite and equipment was about $800.00 and monthly service $69.

Satellite can be as slow as dial-up depending on how good your dish is sighted, if the weather is clear, no wind blowing to either blow the dish or blow tree limbs into the field, etc.  Download is faster than upload, although upload files tend to be much smaller that it isn't much of an issue.

Lots of companies will not allow satellite as it isn't secure.

You can Google DirecWay and Starband and find their websites that should tell you dealers in your area.  If you have DirectTv they can change out the dish so that you can use the internet dish as the TV dish too.  The internet dish is much larger than the TV dish and probably cannot be mounted on the house.

I have hughes (used to be Direcway) and have had for 4 years. sm
With my older system (2-way direct) I had problems when there were bad storms, etc. Now that I finally broke down and upgraded to the DW7000, it has been smooth sailing. I have had it since September 2006 with approximate downtime of maybe 30 minutes since then. Now, since this is my livelihood, I do keep peoplepc as a backup just in case! Overall though I am very happy with satellite and since I live in the boonies, it is either satellite or dialup - gimme satellite any day of the week! Have a wonderful day!!!!!!!!
Direcway satellite drop-offs all day...
Is anyone else having problems with their satellite connection this week?  After 6 months of no problems I am now getting constant drop-offs until 5 p.m.  I am on the west coast and no weather problems.  I have called "customer service," but that was beyond frustrating.  Dial-up is excruciating to work with after being used to the high-speed.  Thanks in advance for any info.
My satellite for the Direcway is on my roof! It is bigger than..sm
my TV satellite, but the best place for the internet was on the roof! I have never had any trouble or "slow" times with it. I have worked through ice, rain, snow...you name it and it has always loaded quickly and with no interuptions. If you have no other ways for high speed, I would recommend the Direcway dish. We have nothing else offered where I live. It is satellite or dial up. Files that would take 1/2 a day or more are now loaded in as little as 5-10 minutes! Also, I have worked for three different companies with my satellite and have never had any security issues and have never had to purchase additional software to make it secure. Cost to me was 600 up front and then 59 a month.
Direcway #2/Transcribing in the boondocks of Ohio!

I should've explained the reason for my question in the first place.  I live in rural Ohio, really rural, and besides dial-up, which, by the way, worked okay until the cold weather hit, a little slow, but okay, and a lot less expensive than DWay.  The only option I had, that I could find anyway, was Direcway.  Have any other Ohio MTs found anything else out there that works?  I'm in northeastern Ohio, about an hour from Pittsburgh, PA.

Direcway#2/Transcribing in the boondocks of Ohio
Hi, just wanted to mention that I recently moved back to IL and to a rural area. In order to work, I invested in a laptop with the wireless network car through Sprint. The techs at the companies that I work for feel it is a bit slow, but its the ONLY option that I have right now and also, for one company, in order to download reports to be able to work, I do have to use a dial-up connection. However, other than a bit of a lag, I really don't seem to have any problems with the wireless network card.

I also researched Verizon (who is the local carrier here) and their coverage only went to a certain area.

I might mention too, that the trial deal is ONLY if you are an existing Sprint customer and since they consider it a second phone line, you have to pay a $150 deposit up front, so its not enitrely "free" and I believe for unlimited service its around $50-60 a month. Hope this helps.
Anyone have Direcway/Hughes.net satellite? Have a problem with VPN....sm
I have been connecting through a VPN with my FP office as they have EMR.  Suddenly on Monday morning I wasn't able to connect.  I was able to Sunday night.  I had an engineer come by and check everything out.  He was able to connect with my password at his house but not via my satellite.  Has this ever happened to any of you?  I will lose this account if I can't get it working.  I am out in the country and can't get an other fast Internet provider.  Hughes.net does say on their website that VPNs don't always work.  It is just weird that it worked one day and not the next.  I called Hughes and they said they didn't do any updates or anything.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks!
direcway has not been a "company" since at leat 09/2006. They are now hughes. sm
Service is great. Tech support stinks cause it is done in a different country. Been with direcway (now Hughes) for 5 years. wound not change.
Have had Hughes for 5 years (used to be Direcway) great internet service sm
but truly hate if I have any kind of problem and have to call in. Luckily that is rate to nonexistent.

There are many companies out there, and the majority of them are good companies. Most jobs are work at home, too. There are pros and cons to every single MT company. What works for one MT won't work for another. Research the Company board. Use the MTstars search function. Read the Job Seeker board to see who's hiring. If you apply and get a nibble back, ask questions specifically. However, I don't think we're all going to list every MT company we've all worked for.

Here are some hints. Don't pay for proprietary hardware or software from the company, buy it on eBay, don't work for free, don't work for less than what you think you are worth. Even when I started out as a total newbie grad from a terrible school, I still made $.065 per line.

The average MT can do 150 lines per hour, so 1,000 lines would be roughly 6.5 hours of work. I expect to put out about 1,200 lines today by noon, and I'm certainly not as fast or experienced as most on this board. There are people out there consistently doing 250-300 lines per hour, so 1,000 lines per day is certainly feasible.
Thanks for that input.
I thought there might be something wrong with me.  Maybe I'm too critical because I keep finding something "wrong" with all these kids.  They're just kids.  Yeah, little demon spawn is my favorite term for them.  These little beasts have no respect for other people, their possessions, or adults.  It certainly makes me appreciate my own kids so much more.  I don't tell them enough that they're good kids.
Thanks! I will look into both of these. Appreciate your input! nm

Thank all of you for your input!
I appreciate the info on both Cymed and Transolutions. Sounds as if Transolutions is the better of the two. If this does not work out, I think I will try doing IC work - just need more info on it. Guess I would have to check into insurance. Have Cobra now and it is sending me to the poor house. Thank you.
Thanks for the input
The person I dealt with was Jennifer, but I never met her, just back and forth over the phone and naturally she was very positive.
Thanks for the input. NM

Thanks for the input - sm
We aren't in Western Washington, other side of the mountains and she is even further east from me, about an hour from here.

They will get help. It may just take a little while longer before they can find someone qualified for it.
Thanks for the input everyone (nm)

TY everyone for your input..

I think I will get busy on approaching some of the chiro's in the area then.  Small town here..not many facilities to choose from for just rad and someone else suggested trying chiro.  Any other suggestions would still be greatly appreciated as well as any websites or individuals willing to share some sample reports.  Feel free to email me with samples/more suggestions.

Thanks again!

Thank you both for the input.

Thanks for the input.
My primary account, though it keeps me busy and has for over 10 years, there is no extra work.  What I do and what another girl does on weekends is all.  I did take on another account at one time but it was either too much or not enought.  Too much for me to handle accurately and do domesticated stuff and dropped back to handle both but not enought money.  I think I will just have to buckle down and stress to family (kids are old enought to help out) that they will have to pitch in or do without!  Thanks again.  You do help me feel a lot better!
Thank you. I will try that. I appreciate your input here nm

thank you for your input
The local is sort of what I am leaning towards..
Any input? Looking in to them.
I appreciate it!  Thanks!
Thanks for your input.....
I guess I will just take today as a day to do some "testing." Thank you so much for sharing. I feel so alone and worried about my future as an MT.
Thanks again, I appreciate your input...
more than you know! Yes, I am definitely a female, I'm sure my sensitivity shows here!! LOL

Would I be going against anything if I sent a letter of apology to those docs for what happened? It isn't like I would be going against noncompete as I would not be trying to get their business, just to apologize and set my mind at ease and get closure.
Thank you all so much for the input....

I appreciate the input. try and have a better night! :)

Thanks for all your input. sm
But Home Depot does use subcontractors.  I asked if they speak English and was told NO.  So, I'm looking at local carpet stores.  Found a lot of horror stories on the net.  Guess it depends on which Home Depot you use and which subcontractor you are lucky or unlucky enough to end up with on your project.
Thanks for your input

Leaving the office and going home to work sounds like something I should seriously consider.  I moved from Oregon to Texas recently and was shocked to find the wages so low.  I went from $15.00 an hour to $9 an hour and nothing around here pays anymore. Believe me my goals are higher than $9 an hour. Thanks again and I'll be hanging around!

Thank you all for your input
The part time job I work at is small and very personable, so with this newer job I have, at a bigger company, I wasn't quite sure. It sounds like I should not send her an email. I just really hate to leave all of these blanks, but you should really hear this guy - he has a very thick accent, he is mumbling like crazy, and coughing in my ear. I feel like the whole report is one big block of swiss cheese.

Thank you all
Thank you for your input, as well
I'm certain there are many QA'ers that do not have a power trip. I am just so used to the small company I work for that I did not know what was proper. My particular QA rarely sends me feedback, which I value because I am still fairly new. In light of your post, I won't take it so personal anymore that there is no "personal touch" given. Thanks a lot
I will...And thanks for all your input...
Next round of competition is August 12.
Thanks for all the input! sm
I am an old-time MT. I was able to obtain an at-home position due to my acute care in-hospital experience. So, I was not able to give my SIL much advice regarding schooling. She has been traveling about 60 miles round trip to get to work each day and she is having a baby in February. She was asking me about my job and when I explained a little about what an MT does, she was really excited about it. She is an excellent typist, so I'm hoping this will be the answer for her in the end. Thanks again!
Thanks, appreciate your input. nm

thanks for all your input ....
Luckily, I have no kids or family obstacles - my time is my own. The distance from my present job and the new job is negligible; it's actually less than 5 mins closer the new job! Both are 15 mins away.
I realize I'll have LOTS of ESLs ... yikes .. but I do have them now, anyway. Hey - maybe I can whip these new docs into shape by dictating the RIGHT way - slow and courteously? lol .. yeah right.

Yes, I can definitely check out the job before I leave my present job. I have 2 days off during the week, and they need someone to start ASAP. So that can work out.

I will definitely keep everyone posted if I get the job. I love the feedback guys - thanks !
Thanks for the input...
...I think I will try a glare screen...that seems to make sense!

thanks for the input everyone..
I am a little worried about underlying causes, and am going to have it checked out.
Thanks for your input!
Sorry I didn't see your message before!  That is really good input.  I'm not trying to write a book as a course per se, I'm really trying to help folks most likely as an IC (that's what I am, and you can still pick up some accounts -- though it's getting harder!)  Also the home/work balance, that sort of thing.  I'd like to help people start successful businesses but you may be right -- that that would work best if they go into medical billing.  Thanks.
Thank you all for your input. :) (nm)

Wow! Thanks for all the input! :)
I will indeed go with an extended warranty, whatever the brand. Thanks!
