heat and animals

Thank you for keeping your animals inside.  I do too.  I have three dogs, four cats and two birds and they are right by my side. I do take the dogs out in the morning and hose them down, then they come into the house (what a mess..no biggie, I can clean it up, ya know?).

For all the animals out there
Suffering, with this video they showed us what they're going through.  I feel it won't be long before this information becomes mainstream and I think the majority of people who see it won't stand for it, people who have more power than us who can take strong action.  I'm glad there are so many of us out there who care this much here on  this board!
Different for animals?
Is ophthalmology different for animals? How many Veterinary Ophthalmogists are there around? Do dogs wear contacts? Just curious.

Leave the animals alone

And what would happen if man wasnt on the earth to keep the population of animals under control?  Nature would take care of itself..Man puts its hands into things and screws up time and time again..Leave the animals alone, they will handle the population.  There is enough meat in every grocery store..more than enough..leave the living, breathing, beautiful animals alone..They were not put here for us to kill or amuse ourselves with..they are sharing the earth with us.they want to live just like we want to live..Leave the animals alone.

LEAVE THE ANIMALS ALONE
Very well said, abc, I totally agree with you. Leave the animals alone.
NO !! they do NOT test on animals.
x
please read if you care about animals....

A friend of mine gave me a video about 4 years ago about factory farming and the fur trade and where our meat supply comes from. Please to to Farm Sanctuary on the web for videos, books, more info. But that video turned me into a vegetarian that moment! I have always loved animals, but some reason never made the connection. They feel pain like we do. They are thinking beings as well and know when they are going to slaughter. Each vegetarian saves 80 ANIMALS A YEAR. It is appalling the way these animals are treated not to mention the chemicals and food they are fattened up with during their short lives... this is going into YOUR food chain. Sorry to get on my soap box... but I feel very passionately about this cause. If you are interested, please  research it further. The videos are extremely hard to watch, but that's the point --- it wakes you up! Harm no thing. Thanks for reading. Please don't bother blasting me if you disagree. It is my opinion. It will not change. You do not have to agree.

Shoot, my animals are all cute.

My dog will jump on her hind legs and "box" with you by smacking your hands with her front paws.

My cat likes to go berserk inside cardboard boxes.  He also perches on my desk and dips his paws in my betta bowl.  Then he climbs all the way up the screen door and yowls if I'm outside.  Typical cat behavior, I guess, but this is my first kitty so it's funny.  He's a loverboy, too.  He crawls up on me, sticks his head under my hair, chews my hair, bites my neck, purrs and goes to sleep.

I cannot use Mary Kay because they test on animals - sm
But I do use Estee Lauder and Oil of Olay. I consulted three dermatologists on getting Botox and they all said no way for me because I have no WRINKLES around my eyes or forehead ... at 39 years of age!
Animals have more rights than babies do!

Feeling a little sad for you "as they are about animals"

Instead of at least quietly agreeing (or disagreeing) that this action was awful you chose to attack the poster.  Don't understand why you felt you had to do it.  I too am sickened by abortion, child abuse and neglect.  I am also saddened that man's best friend could by the thousands be killed like that.  I am not saying that it rates up there with abortion in my mind, but gosh, that was an undeniably cruel thing and it certainly causes me to give pause.

I think keeping animals caged
or "boxed in" and this includes, birds, snakes, turtles, and yes, keeping cats inside a house for their entire life cheats them of being able to live in their natural environment and doing what comes naturally to their species. Their exercise is greatly reduced and so is their instinctive behavior to feed, hunt or whatever it is they do. How would you like to live inside a box for your entire life? Just my opinion, you are entitled to yours.
Yes, they're all indoor animals...sm
The 4 cats they brought when we got married stay downstairs in the basement and my stepdaughter's room down there, and the rest of the animals are upstairs. Needless to say, we'll be looking for a larger house soon!
General liabilty and E&O are two different animals.
I used to sell insurance. General liability protects your companies assets when something you do causes harm to either a person or property. E&O, aka professional liability, aka Errors & Omissions comes into play when you make a mistake and/or omit something and thereby cause financial harm to your client. I can't see the need for an independent MT to carry either of these - unless you're like the one who has the government contracts. You can get a small GL only policy from Hartford for about $400 a year and they are the only ones who will write those. The E&O is closer to the $5k a year range (or more) and there is no need to do that - not when all of our work is sent through the MTSO's QA people. The MTSO holds the burden for that.
106 but its a dry heat.

Heat or not sm

I've never cared to associate with nasty people and nasty people seem to dominate most MT boards.

heat
Im so sick and tired of this heat.  This is our third heat wave.  Supposed to be at least 104 today and 106 tomorrow.  I cannot wait until the fall.  I would give anything for rain right now.  Urggggggg..  *smile*
In the heat???
I'm not the one who posted and I don't know where she lives, but have YOU ever tried walking 3 blocks when the temp is close to 120???
perhaps it is the heat? --sm
I don't know if it as hot there as it has been across the whole nation, but maybe he/she wants to get into some air conditioning, as it is too hot outside...just a thought. poor thing. Sorry you were scared though.
Take our heat

Too bad we can't have the best of both.  Was 103 here yesterday in Portland, OR and we very rarely get that warm this early in the year.   could not work after 1 o'clock yesterday because of the heat, so got up at 4 this morning.  Better today low 90's but still plenty warm.

Good luck to you being from Oregon I know about the rain but right now wouldn't mind a little.

Oh my Gosh - WEGMANS has cruelty to animals??
That is the only place I will do my grocery shopping - I haven't seen the video yet, but please say it isn't soooo. There are only a few Wegmans - Where will I goooooo??!!!?!?
anyone have animals cute/quirky habits?
I live next to a manufactured lake, and there are dozens of ducks and birds hanging around there.  My dog usually likes to go up to them or chase them.  He also loves people, runs up to them too, very friendly and can be generally laid back.  Although, when he comes across a stray feather lying on the ground, he will literally approach it like a mouse would a mouse trap, and then jump back about two or three feet, and then veer as far away around it as possible.  This has been going on for a couple months, no idea why.  Today, I picked up a feather and set him on my lap and brought it close to him and said "its okay" and right when I touched him with it, he squirmed, almost flipped completely in the air, and tore himself loose from his collar and ran far away from me (never does that anytime, sticks to me like glue), so now he walks around the lake like its a mine field, jumps and wimpers even if he touches a feather.  The strangest thing in the world to me.
And where exactly do you think that the meat in the grocery store comes from?? ANIMALS!

One of my daughter's soft stuffed animals....
when she's not looking!! It's a soft little pink elephant, not scratchy at all.
I already do pray. But why not spirits? Animals are more sensitive, you know
nm
Being a mother, I couldn't tolerate animals
walking around infected with rabies that would be a threat to my family, because as much as I love animals, my family is still my priority. On the other hand though, no they shouldn't be clubbed to death and killed even if not infected. This is China though, and they have no respect for most people...much less animals. It's sad, but unfortunately the way it is. :(
God gave us dominion over animals for beginners. sm
Good or bad snake, if it's in my house, it's a goner. If you don't like it, then sue me lady. Your statements are foolish and uneducated. And you're the one who probably believes that snakes have feelings. Give me a break. Good Lord!
just an observation about this "as they are about animals" poster
She uses "thang" and "ya" just like Kikki. Just wondering if she's baaaaack . . .
no, kill animals that are carrying the epidemic
to save the humans. Sorry if you don't agree with that.
Shock collars are cruel on animals.
You can teach dogs not to bark without using shock treatments.

People (& animals, too) will work harder to get

With the heat, I'm going to try nights

I think my favorite account is getting cleaned out first thing AM, so I'm going to try nights for a bit.  Starting now!

Those of you who do nights regularly, any secrets to staying perky?

p.s.: careful not to heat too much

Now that fall is here and I'm having to use heat my
face is dry and itchy.   I've started using a humidifier to add moisture in the air, but I need a lotion too.  I have very sensitive skin too.   I've used several OTC lotions and they haven't helped much.   Looking for a good moisturizer for all over, but mostly for the face.
Anyone else have anxiety using heat?
I've had to turn on the old heater this past week and I must admit I'm feeling really nerrrrrvous about getting my bill! I'm afraid to keep it on for fear of a thousand dollar charge! Anyone else with "heating bill anxiety"?
Wood heat, here...

Good thing.  It was 6 degrees here yesterday morning.  Have enough wood stockpiled to last through this winter and halfway into next and I have a +2600 square foot farmhouse.  Also have the LP tank full in case the furnace kicks in.

Now, before I pat myself on the back too hard, let me say that wood heat is a LOT of work and time-consuming and very very very messy.  It's almost like a second job in some ways.

Wood heat here too
I'm so glad we got an outdoor wood furnace a few years back. We haven't had to buy/use LP for 4 winters now. I'll put up with the work as long as I don't have those high oil prices anymore.
Heat anxiety
I live in AZ so our big bills are in the summer for the AC. I moved back to upstate NY for a few years and am back in AZ now. When in NY I almost froze and had huge electric bills, so I bought a little electric space heater and put it under my desk. It kept me toasty all day and I didn't have to crank up the heat in the entire house to stay thawed out. Give it a try! Heating costs have gone up everywhere this year because the poor oil companies really are hurting for money (HA). The little space heater will really do the trick and keep you toasty all winter. What part of the country are you in?
Heat anxiety--here's what I'm trying sm

Hubby wants the furnace on 67--too cold for me but we settled on 68.  Last year we had it at 70.  Our windows this year have all new caulking and loose windows are sealed shut, but that didn't seem to be enough. I bought a bunch of those 4.00 fleece blanket throws 50 x 60 " from Big Lots and some cafe rod clips from Walmart, enough to adequately cover all 20 windows. I cut the blankets in half and put 7 clips on each half, hung them on a standard rod and they cover the windows adequately for me.  If you want more fluffiness, use 1 blanket and 14 rod clips for each panel. It really helps in keeping the sun out of my office which is way too hot during the day being on the south side but then gets cold at nights when I work, so the blankets keep out the drafts. So far, so good.  We'll see if it helps on our gas charges. So far, they have us on budget billing and our bills are 72.00 a month.  Hopefully, they will go down a little more. I'm going to try leaving them up in the summer to see if they keep out the heat and keep in the air conditioning. I priced the thermal rubber backed drapes and they were about 25.00 to 50.00 a window-a little bit more than I can spend right now.

Is it the Texas heat?

I think we may have worked for the same lady!  She never had the AC on in her office except for a unit in the room with the phone equipment to keep it cool, so my husband used to say that it must be the heat frying her brain cells.  If it isn't the same lady, it's a real clone.  I don't work for her anymore, either!

lighting and heat
Those are excellent ideas!  I'm printing all these ideas and will check into some of them.  You're right....moving the office would be the most reasonable (and free!).
heat/electricity, etc.

My office is upstairs in my house.  I work nights, so I have the settings on my automatic thermostat lower at night to be more efficient.  However, with the office upstairs, it is always warmer (heat rises), so even when the rest of the house is cooler, I am just comfy.

Also, have heard that when not using the computer, it is still using energy if it is turned on, so when going to be away from computer for a while, remember to turn it off.

Also, in my master bedroom, I have found this room gets very cold, especially at night on cold nights.  I think this is caused by the fact that it is in the corner of my house, with 2 large outside walls, and is also located above the garage (which is colder).  I purchased a small electric (porcelain I think or something like that) for about $30, and I don't think it uses that much electricity.  It has a thermostat system, so will cycle on and off to keep the room at the set temperature.  This works great for this room, as I keep the door closed.

Good luck!

I heard you get lung cancer by eating animals.

See hurricane board for ways to help N.O.area animals. NM

I don't watch fear factor. They abuse animals. I also have better
stuff to do with my time then watch someone eat pig intestines.
sorry, you are assigning human logic/emotions to animals...
seal mothers do not go nearly insane with fear and pain as they watch their babies being clubbed to death in front of them. - you've got to be kidding. Animals are incapable of the complexities of logic and emotion to get to that conclusion. If you want something to be frantic about, go to Africa and see the abandoned newborn infants piled in chicken wire crates in the hospital. Let's get priorities in order and no, a boy is not a dog or a pig or a rat.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again - animals know things people don't.
nm
Why on earth do people let their animals roam free?
Never have understood this!
Agree totally. I'd like to see an end to rodeos, too. So cruel to animals. nm

Unless she has animals that constantly snag on the carpet or intentionally sm
dig their claws into the carpet, I have to beg to differ with you on the berber carpet. We LOVE ours. Have had it for 7 years with 3 cats, 4 dogs (not all at once) and we don't have any snags! I'm serious. I'm not sure what grade of carpet you are referring to, but we have not had any problems with our Berber. I also think it cleans very well with a steam cleaner once every 6 months or so. Our Berber still looks new with all of these pets we've had.

So, I do recommend Berber, though it is pricey.

There are a lot of other durable things on the market that she can look for and afford but I just had to say something about Berber because we just love ours.
