How would I apply? am sure I'm out of state. (nm)

I went to the Red Cross to volunteer locally and was told that I needed to apply to the state for a
background check, which will take from 2 weeks to a month to get back.  I understand red tape as well as the next person, but is this really necessary?  They are asked for people to help load trucks and pack and sort supplies right now, but only from people who are already in "the system."  I guess I'll go another route and go to one of the local churches and volunteer, without the red tape.
new grads and what they have to offer
very little experience, work very cheaply, anything just to get an opportunity. What a reality check it will be for them when they realize theyre going nowhere in this business after a couple of years, no raises, no opportunity for advancement, and still be making the same (or lower)$12/hr they started out at, all the while cost of living going up. Bright futures, I think not. Burn out, YES. These newbies will have to work even harder than we have to right now to make ends meet, maybe even take a second job. You are fortunate to have your own accounts and your own work so..... I don't think you understand whats going on in the world of MTs that work for these companies who work them to death.
Our Co hired about 20 grads from

Hi Rae,

The company I work for hired 20 graduates all at one time from Med Workshops and they did well.  This was about 1-1/2 yrs ago.

We contracted with Med Workshops to provide the graduates based on parameters we were looking for.  Because our Company spelled out the training, it was hard to go wrong.  Students got a break on the normal tuition costs.

I understand they are a medical transcription staffing school; the only one I know of.

Who Hires M-Tec grads?
I just finished my coursework at M-TEC.  I can't wait for my test to be graded...and I'm itching to find a job.  Before my test, I was 95%.  I'm wondering if anyone knows what companies routinly hire from M-Tec so I can go looking now and not have to wait till I am able to access the COC on M-TEC's website?
Don't forgot all those grads that are
just to get their foot in the door because they couldn't land a job. I haven't been there in a while, but the CS forum used to have a bunch of those kind of posts.
There IS A CHARGE FOR GRADS, . . .

and I don't want anyone misled either.

Clearly, grads pay $50 for the classes and another $49.95 for the review guide.  This is still a great price, but IT IS NOT FREE FOR GRADS OR ANYONE ELSE.  Perhaps you signed up for the classes before the fees was implemented

I do not care to violate copyright laws by posting the content of posts by Susan the grad forums.

However, for anyone without access to the M-Tec grad forum, there is indeed a fee for the RMT or CMT classes.

because they know new grads want 6-8 cpl just like they were told in school
and besides, like I said, takes too much time. So you take on a newbie, train them while paying them 2 cpl.   Then they get their "experience" then they move on to greener pastures. Meanwhile the MT in India will still do it for 2 cpl, only now they are trained... get it?
This has changed now. Only CS grads are accepted without
nm
And at least some of those college-grads went to school
so you'd think they would have an idea of not only the standard of living here, but the wages as well, and what things like food, gas & housing cost. Others were trained by American MTs or MTSOs. If nothing else, they should feel a little bit guilty about ripping off the country that is sending so much work their way.
There is no charge for grads to take the classes.
I just finished the course and signed up for the classes and did not pay a dime. You may be confused by the $50 Review Guide that is recommended to study with.
Totally untrue...M-TEC & Andrews grads are...
still allowed to test.  Please stop giving false information.
Why? M-TEC & Andrews produce the absolute best grads.
nm
Many companies hire new grads for SR editing.
nm
Not anymore. Only Career Step grads without experience
nm
I've never heard a bad remark from Andrews or M-Tec grads.
I've heard about the grader being wrong/ambiguous, and I've heard about the mistakes in the course.

From what I've heard, I also think the course is geared toward producing MTs to work for the big cheap companies. It's kind of like a (fill in the blank)______ company MT-maker assembly line.

Work for a company in a state that has no state income tax
I think there are 3 or 4 out there (Florida, Texas, and a few others.)  Then you really avoid the tax situation.
Name a state and put every company in that state under suspicion.

Tell what the first letter of the company is and every company with that initial will be suspect.  I would imagine that everyone who works for that company has received an inquiry from department of labor, so they would all be aware of it.

Why do we persist in setting up companies to be torn down when there is no reason for it.  If a company is suspect, then give the name of the company, don't give big hints that cover at least 5 companies, 4 of which may be the best companies to work for, but fall into the category of an alphabetical letter, etc.

Contact your local BBB in your state and in their state if different from yours.
xx
Not mandatory, as you state it depends on your state - sm
or county. Where I am I do not need it; though if I was cutting grass or landscaping I would where I live, makes no sense to me as I am providing a service, but very happy I don't have to have one. We pay personal property tax here and I would have to list all my business related equipment and pay taxes on it every year I was in business. So until I am told otherwise by my county, I will not be getting a business license.
pay amount
I work for them and have for years now. What they do is basically pay how they are paid so we cannot blame them. Basically, the client takes 1/2 of the total lines for the month and pays it on the 15th of the next month and the other half on the next paycheck and so on. I have always been paid my full amount with no problems. To figure out pay, go into the transcription program and look up your lines for the month and divide them in half...very simple really. Again, they have always paid correctly and I have been with them 4.5 years now.
for me it would be the same amount of...
of Keystrokes as I use yo and then the spacebar, which would still be 3 keystrokes. From typing, it is just natural for me to hit the spacebar versus using the ";". Is this what you mean?
amount of RAM

Is there a way to tell if low RAM is slowing things down or if it is just the platform?  I have various problems (aside from several-second delays with certain things) that I think may be due to lack of RAM.

I use a lot of online and computer resources, so I probably need a lot of RAM.

Any way to tell?

varies from state to state...nm

Some people just CHOOSE to live in DE NILE (DENIAL) and we all see you are ONE OF THOSE.

Some of us CHOOSE to go through life as a REALISTS!

Things are different from state to state, but I think
you probably could, if you are actually "laid off."  You would have to get a letter from your surgeon regarding your temporary disability status and take to the unemployment office and to Medicaid....but you know how Medicaid works, 1.5 pennies over the income limit, you don't get it.  But, as I stated, laws differ from state to state, so you would have to inquire or go on their websites and see what they will approve and what they will not.
If not in your state, try filing in THEIR state. Then they
nm
wow! do you know if it was a significant amount?

And what would that amount to American?
x
that is if you EARN under a certain amount,
after that you must pay taxes on all. The goverment certainly isn't going to be left out of our money!!
If I could have made even the same amount
someone who lives near me, an ex-MQ'er, who went to work there.  She would never come back.  We worked on the same account, which MQ is losing, expected to go live there before the end of the year.  I wanted to stay with my account, of 7 years, had normals up the wazoo!
Can you rent a car for about the same amount? sm
That way you could come and go as you pleased!
I also make about that amount. sm
I have both a full-time job and a part-time job, and work about 60 hours a week. I don't do five 12-hour days. I work a normal 40-hour week, then for the part-time I scatter my hours in the evening. It works out really well for me and I average about $50,000 a year. For a long time, I was working a regular 40-hour job and only making about $27,000 a year. It's definitely worth the extra time spent. I work while the kids are in school, then I work for a couple hours after they're asleep. I have every Sunday off with them, and they're busy on Saturdays anyway while I'm working, so it works out well for us. You just have to find a schedule that will fit for you, and the most important thing is to find a company or service that will pay you what you're worth. Keep looking... they're out there...
Per page amount
I work as a general transcriptist for an insurance company and I get paid $3.00 a page no matter how long the page. In the area where I live I think $6 would be a lot of money, but if she can get it, that's a great per page amount.
Anyone can type in any amount they wish - sm
on a board like this, and claim it is their income.
I would not quit with just that amount
because I have spent that much over the past several years buying new home, tile for that home, granite, living - have also put money in the bank oh, say around 40,000. I would not retire from a job unless I won something in the range probably of over 10 million, then I might think about it. It sounds like a huge amount but even people who have won the lotteries have come up broke after a few years. You have to take a very tight rein on money like that and not be unwise in spending, otherwise it will be gone before you know it.
They equate to about the same amount of $$. nm
x
Normal amount?
There is no "normal amount" in this field. It's a matter of if your pay works for you and you feel like you are rewarded properly for it.

I would not poo-poo the amount of money
the people are making doing crafts. I have just bought out of state from a lady on Etsy some plates she made. I paid $25.00 for 3 plates and $40.00 for one. I called her on the phone to put in a special order and I asked where did she sell besides Etsy. She tells me there are several events she goes to, usually selling $20 or more a day of at least $20 each and she cannot make them fast enough. The plates are very ornate, beautiful (mine at least because I like the bling and asked for such) so I think if you got enough needing your product, hey don’t think a person cannot make a good living that way. She sells on Etsy plus the events she attends and possibly other ways although we did not get into that. I love crafts and only wish I could make something as beautiful but guess I will just have to stay with what I do best, MTing.
Will the same apply for IC??
x
I'd like to apply.

Apply, apply, apply
I would suggest you check the archives of this and other MT boards.  I would also suggest you send out a lot of resumes and apply to many companies.  A great company for one person might not be a great company for you.  I would never quit one company unless I already had a job with another one.  If possible, work the 2 jobs to see which one is worth leaving and which one is worth staying with.  Don't sell yourself short.  You only deserve the best.
No, you don't want to apply here.
If the Twilight Zone did a show regarding transcription companies, this would be it.
I'd t ake it. If you don't want it, I'd like to apply.
;-D
does not apply to IC's...sm
you are self employed, remember? therefore YOU are the employer. If you have your house built and the guy who comes to put the siding on is slow, and doesn't know what he is doing, he might only make $3.00/hr by the time he's done. Does he go to your builder and say you need to pay me minimum wage...no, he bid the job and he is responsible for doing enough work in an hour to make it worth his while...just like you are!
400-650 when I apply myself.
Using Escription.
Apply to any and all

You can find online, through magazines, etc.  I applied to over 100 when I first started out after school, and finally found someone who was willing to give me a try.  You will eventually find someone.

Also, if you can't find someone to hire you right away, write to a company to see if they might give you a short intern position or something.  It would be worth a try anyway.

Good Luck with your search!

did we apply for the same job? LOL sm
I've been at home for 12 years and it's taking a toll on me. I need some social interaction. There are 2 local hospitals here and one had a unit clerk, nights and weekends. I applied and within a few days, emailed me back and said no. Geez, didn't even get an interview.
The TC? I've been paying the same amount
for over 4 years. I've never paid any money out whatsoever in over 4 years to work for MQ.

I've also never run out of work. On two occasions, we were running right behind the dictation - very closely - but I still had enough work to get the lines that I WANTED, not just the minimum production.

There may be a day come when I do actually run out. I will deal with that situation then.

I was just asking where you were getting your information because it is is nothing similar to how it works for me.

Good luck.
I was in the same boat until I threw a $ amount at him.

Then he said, "What are you talking to me for? Get back to work!"
