Thank you sincerely for your post.
Seriously, I really needed this. I have already decided I'm going to keep her home for the next six weeks of school. I may even keep her home next year, given what you've written. She will only be 5 in June. I turned 6 in kindergarten. I firmly believe she needs to spend some time with me now that I'm not as stressed out from living with her father. We currently share a bedroom - Strawberry Shortcake and Care Bears - and I'm getting closer to her. I didn't feel comfortable sending her to school, but I did. I can find time to type around her and still have tons of time to spend with her while her brother and sister are at school. Her brother is 3 (four in September) and is doing very well in school. Different kind of kid. I'm sure it will be a battle on Tuesday with the teacher and the principal, but with all of your support I'm now ready to stand my ground. She will not finish the school year with a teacher/school that thinks she should be "up to snuff" with kids that have been in school all last year and this year. They will probably be ready for kindergarten with all that behind them, but she's just starting this stuff. Give me a break. Thanks again. Wonderful post. I needed it.
I SINCERELY hope you are right, but (sm)
I was thinking the same as you until just recently, until I had time to think about it and study the letter which states as one of the "highlights": A newly defined full-time employee classification with flexible scheduling.

My thinking (sleep-deprived, so forgive me if it is not eloquent): If they can offer former SEs flexibility and they can eliminate the quarterly bonus, it might be to their financial advantage.

Many MTs who are SEs have insurance from spouses or just can't afford MQ's insurance, so they opt for SE. Now, they may have done some kind of cost comparison thing and found that SE versus employee is not as cost-effective on the SE end as they thought. What else about being an SE costs them anything? PTO is the only thing I can think of (and unless they improve that significantly, it's not worth much). Stock options? They aren't even selling, right?

They are also offering flexible scheduling for part-time employees.

Regarding your insurance question, back when my office was bought out by MQ, the insurance for a family was in the range of $500/month. For employee only it was pretty cheap. May have changed since then and I don't know anything about the plan.

One more thing... the SE bonuses coincidentally come out in October, the same time this new thing will be introduced. Perfect time to eliminate it. I just have a bad feeling, but time will tell.
Thank you sincerely. (no message)

And if you sincerely read and comprehended my 2 posts, I ....sm
tried to make clear that these were EXACTLY my sentiments .. my mention of Northern only referred to the fact that I studied the average range of pay of MTs years ago, and have consistently noted the trend that the area which you are transcribing in directly affects the pay scale, mostly for in-hospital work ... up North, there is such a higher cost of living, unfortunately, and I believe this leads to some higher wages ..heck, we have had manufacturing companies leave the Northeast region because, along with utilities and other operating expenses being cheaper, they knew they also could offer less pay to the workers down South because of the pay scale. This is no reflection on who is smarter, better, etc., just stating statistics to look at when deciding if you are being paid/offered pay fairly. Again, why look for an arguement or insult when NONE was intended, only assistance and info, which was requested? Civil war was over many years ago, true?
fishy
Something is really fishy about that. During my three tenures with MQ (yep, bump my head), I received a SE W2 and taxes were taken out. Challenge it. This might be part of something more serious. They might be behind on their quarterly deposits and IRS is going after us.....May be inform tax advocacy group. (I do taxes and I had to do that for a physician).
Not fishy at all sm
The company I work for released me from Full QA on day one. They, of course, then had me send any blanks to QA. Two months later, I was one of the first released to full production, meaning two or fewer blanks could go to the client.
I sincerely hope that you are correct in that we will jobs coming back to the states, but I won't
I realize that India is a third-world country and it is a small percentage of Indian workers who are benefiting from the offshoring of American MT jobs and it may be only a small percentage of jobs been offshored, but the impact of this small percentage to the entire industry of medical transcription is tremendous.  It has lowered the standard wage for the American medical transcriptionist.  How can an American MT compete with 3 or 4 cpl?  By accepting only a little more per line than the Indians or by taking jobs editing the Indian MTs work for 3 or 4 cpl.  Either way, we lose.  We make less than we did 10 or 20 years ago and that's progress?!?!
Sounded fishy to me

They are both identical, polite and too exact and to me sounded like it was someone attempting to appear to be American.  Maybe I am a skeptic but that is my gut feeling.

Sounds fishy...
What I would do was say that you received a call from your insurance questioning the visits.  That way its not you questioning, but the insurance.  Sounds like she may have found a loophole.  I think you would know if he needed chiropractic care at age 9.  hmmmmm
Fishy story
First of all, I would believe the woman was calling not for your husband's friend, but for your husband. This isn't my first rodeo.

Second, even if it was your husband's friend the female was looking for, you still have a problem. Your husband is running around with men who cheat on their wives. Birds of a feather flock together.

So in essence, you should not be mad at some unknown female. You should be worrying about alcohol and infidelity issues in your own home - which is a more real problem than some unknown female. If you allow your husband to drink and go to bars where other femals are, you are asking for trouble in your home and apparently you have it. Best of luck.
sounds fishy to me

Your first paragraph makes me think you are being scammed.  If you can't install an Expander program how will you ever learn to use one of the better ones to your best ability (to work somewhere better down the road).  I have literally thousands of expansions in my program and it goes from company to company as I change jobs and my production only increases as it grows.  If the computer crashes, it's on CD backup and I can put it on any other computer.  Don't know about these features in WORD, as I have always been more pleased with an independent expander program.  More versatile.  If this is THEIR computer and you enter your expansions on it, you might lose all your hard work if you stay for a while and then quit.  Think about this.  *Someone please correct me if I'm wrong here.*

This company may provide templates and you change a few things here and there, but this disabling thing really bothers me, especially if you are new to transcription.  They've got you backed into a corner as far as developing your skills is concerned.  It's in your best interest to know and use ALL the programs and featues that help us make money.  I don't think they are being fair to you.  I've worked for 2 places with accounts that relied heavily on templates and both paid me for everything whether I typed it or not.  Maybe they are only paying you for what you put in and not what automatically populates.  If so, another reason to quit, even if you can whip these things out quickly.  It sounds to me like you are being taken advantage of.  You have to make sure the document makes sense in the end and not just what you inserted or changed, right?  You deserve to be paid for the whole thing from my understanding of what you wrote and use whatever tools you prefer to use to reach that objective as long as it doesn't interfere with their software.  If it does, go somewhere else where you can develop your skills and become more marketable and be paid accordingly.

Can you even install a medical spellchecker on the computer???  This just sounds nuts to me.  What about reference CDs for specialities, etc.????  I prefer my own computer so I can put whatever I want on it.  Worth the expense in my estimation and I don't have to wonder about what other stuff the company has put on it that I don't know about to watch my work habits, etc.

Good luck to you whatever you decide to do!   Just don't let them walk all over you if you are new--not if you can help it.  I know getting experience is important but so is making a decent living and bettering your skills for a better future.

I agree. Kinda fishy isn't it?
mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Way fishy! You're being used and abused. This is NOT
s
I agree, fishy. If you're an IC you'll have to take out approx.
30% on top of the 25% they're going to keep, but will you have to claim earnings of it all, even their 25%. Hmmmm, I think I'd be asking a LOT of questions because why aren't they just saying you'll make 9.75 cents instead of 13 cents that you'll really NOT be making.
You'll notice this person didn't sign their name --fishy??? nm

My supe puts NOTHING in an email

other than her little account update. She will NOT respond to an email (nothing in writing) to any questions at all -- she picks up the phone and calls.  I have sent her several emails with concerns -- NO RESPONSE -- but my phone will ring at home -- I guess I will start recording my phone conversations with her !!!

I have asked for a LONG TIME about my account "going bye bye", and because the work was no longer there. Only this week did she say that it had gone to VR -- she would not put that in writing, or even hint that the account was going by the way, and believe me, I have asked her where the work has gone. When you have been on an account for a long time, an MT knows when the works "dries up." Doesn't she?

So basically, the supe's responsibilities are to email account updates 2 or 3 times a day, beg for the MT to take on ANOTHER new account that she has been handed down to her team (to slow the MT down), beg for the MT to work WHEN SHE NEEDS YOU (not when you were scheduled to work -- because the overseas MT's was not going to work that day and she needs you, or ASR equipment was down), be team cheerleader in an email occasionally when you have made HER look good, take care of the little kids they have at home with them. That pretty well describes the supe on my team.

Hey, my family puts the FUN in dysFUNctional!
RadGuy, you could start a blog and publicly post your family's antics for the whole world to see. Just kidding.... It sounds as if a cruise or weekend getaway is in order!
Official policy puts it best . . .
from the 2002 AAMT Book of Style:

"Obscenities, profanities, and vulgarities do not belong in a patient's record unless they are part of direct quotations that are essential to a report."

In 20+ years of transcribing, mostly psychiatry, with, as one might imagine, a lot of profanity, I've always just typed whatever the clinician quoted the patient as saying, and have never had a complaint.

Good luck,

CTT

Doc is using software to do his own reports that puts the ® symbol after trade drug names and
I'm wondering if anyone is aware of a software program, maybe voice recognition, that does this? (I coudn't access the VR board to ask).  This is one doctor in a practice that I transcribe for and I usually do his transcription for him, but the last time I logged into their computer to send them their files, there were reports in his file that I didn't transcribe that have this ® behind the trade names.  I want to do a little research before talking to the practice.  TIA

it would seem to me that you, with your experience, should let her know being a nurse alone does not make 1 a good MT. Like I said, I think a person should get some education in this field, having an RN does not necessarily mean a good transcriptionist. I cannot believe the posts I read on this thinking what a dream job just because I, want to stay home with the kids, want to keep my animals company and think easy because I don't have to leave my home to work. Any MT worth their salt does not do this job just for selfish reasons.
But you WILL have to smell their pot. :) nm

I smell a huge rat
Is your husband up to no-good with this loser? First of all any "my baby's daddy" situation has scumbag written all over it. Second of all, if your husband doesn't mind being used by this lazy bum for a free place to live, he has to be getting something out of the bargain. I'd be doing some serious checking around if I were you.

Meanwhile, you're right to keep this piece of crap away from your kids. If your husband likes him so much let him live with this waste of oxygen alone.

Good luck.
Sadly, nothing gets cig smell out of anything. It
always sneaks back. I have been burned 3 times out of 4 on E-Bay with MT stuff. I am a huge buyer and seller, and its the only area I've not been happy with, so I'd rather buy new now than risk it. Hopefully it will work. One thing I have tried is sealing whatever it is up in a bag for as long as possible, or as frequently as possible, with a Outdoor Fresh Scent Bounce or two in the sealed bag with the item. Over time the Bounces absorb some of the cig smell. But it would be a hassle undoing a C-phone every day and bagging it. Sorry - that smell makes me sick, too, and I used to smoke! Good luck.
do I smell a newbie/cherrypicker?
You go over seas, learn medicine in conjunction with a new language fluently, then tell us how easy it is?  These ESLs at least make an effort to slow down and be understood, more than I can say for the Americans.  Besides, it is our job, being transcriptionists, to decipher these accents, research, and come up with the correct terminology for the report.  Would you like mister rogers to dictate all of them? Come on, you can handle it!
Me too, how funny! It does smell good!

Vinegar also takes smell out. sm

I always use vinegar when I need to get a smell out.

Whenever I burn popcorn in the microwave, I fill a coffee cup full of vinegar and set it in the microwave.  It always takes the smell out.

I've steam cleaned pet soil out of my carpet using vinegar and baking soda, and the odor always goes away.

I smell a rat - I mean bully. Same thing.:)

OP,

I agree with Katz.  No need to use profanity however.  Don't risk your dignity and self-respect by stooping to her level. Yet, I agree with everything else, like telling her to shut up in a nice way -- let her know you are working and you suggest she does the same.  She feels threatened obviously, so don't make it easy for her by quitting which is probably what she wants.  I don't think the boss wants you to quit, however.  It sounds like she just wants to skip out on the pay increase and manipulate the situation to her benefit (according to what you have said so far).

As for Ms. Obnoxious, sounds like she has figured out the only one she needs to get along with is the boss.  And if she can get you to leave, then more work and job security for her.  It's an awful mess of a situation you are in.  I don't tolerate bullies and neither should you, and that is exactly what she sounds like -- a bully.  You will have to give her the silent treatment instead of her giving you the silent treatment and even if she does give you the silent treatment, good.   It doesn't sound like she has anything worthy to say anyway.   In the meantime, if you want to be there for any reason -- to pay off a debt, to go back to school, to gain more experience before leaving, etc. -- then stay as long as you want.  When you are ready, find the new job, test it out, then make the switch at your own pace.  With your typing speed, I don't doubt you will be able to find something better.  Just don't make it easy for anyone by quitting.

You are all that matters, especially on a job.  Workers are not your friend. You have to find that outside of the workplace.  I don't think talking to either one of them is worth anything.  They already know they are in the wrong.

Best of luck to you.

moldy smell in carpet
I had the same thing and ended up finally tearing up the whole carpet and pad, then installing a wood laminate floor. It was expensive, but I had tried EVERYTHING, to no avail. Baking soda and vinegar are excellent remedies, IF the mold hasn't seeped into the pad. If it has, there is virtually nothing that will remove the smell altogether. We hadn't noticed the mold smell when we looked at the house. (The carpet had just been freshly shampooed to show the house.) It was after we bought it and moved in that we noticed it. Before my husband installed the wood laminate floor, we bleached the entire concrete slab, as the mold had also seeped in to the concrete. Bleach did the job on that. Good luck. :)
Wake up and smell the roses and not
alcohol breath - ewwww
well wake up and smell the coffee...

Ever since managed care came into being here, the doctors have been moaning and groaning...and less and less folks are actually entering the medical field today.....becauise nobody is earning the money they were 15-20 plus years ago.....There is a huge shortage of nurses also in this country - it's not profitable enough for anyone today...not like it used to be prior to managed care.....

I have been treated overseas and it IS better.....and I recently read an article that folks here, the elderly, are now relocating to India for long-term care at home....it's nearly free over there....if I ever find that article, I will repost here.....the couple the article was about are in their 80s and they get all their rxs, aides in the home (home health care), and treatment for a miniscule amount compared to here......the article showed pictures too.....all nice and clean and very efficient looking.  Plus, an added benefit is they are just more respectful of the elderly overseas.....in general and everywhere.....whether it be Europe or Asia.....while here, all they seem to be interested in in this country is YOUTH - a youth-oriented society it has been for a couple of generations now.

You *think* we have the best......but it might not always be as it seems and think of *down the road* - while less folks are entering the field(s) here - you'll find there will be less and less *the best*.....

Nope, we're everywhere on this board! Can't you smell us??

Candles that smell like fresh cut grass. sm
Gosh, I just love that smell.  Anyone know where I can purchase something like that?  What a great pick me up for winter.  Also, love the clean smell of fresh rain.  If  I could only bottle that aroma.....
Drench it with vinegar. It won't take the color out, and the smell will be gone. You can also add

baking soda to the vinegar.  It works really well.

I use vinegar for anything with a smell.  If the trash can starts to smell, I pour vinegar in the bottom and let it sit overnight.  Then I just rinse it out in the morning.

Also, if you burn popcorn in the microwave, you can pour vinegar into a coffee cup and put it in the microwave.  Then let it sit in the microwave overnight.  By morning, the smell will be gone.
