if a new headset doesn't help, plug directly into CPU and avoid speakers and see if that helps.

Can you just plug the headset into the speakers?
x
I plug my headset directly...

...into the computer in the jack that you plug speakers into.

No, there is no where on my speakers to plug into so I must ..sm
plug the headset directly into the back of the computer..on the floor..hard to access. Then I have to unplug the headset and plug up the speakers when I want to use them so not quite an ideal set-up!
If you could possibly get new speakers with plug-in...
nm
I just meant when you plug speakers into the computer
and then the headphones into the speakers. When I plugged headphones directly into the computer the sound was never loud enough for me.
speakers/headset
I have an extension i bought at radio shack and plug/unplug speakers/headset - makes it easier than getting to the rear of the computer. I've never seen a splitter - it would make sense!
You might need to bypass the USB hub and plug directly in. sm
I have had this problem with other USB devices.  I just switch around until I find one that will work in hub.  I don't use EMDAT so don't know if that's the problem.  Maybe someone else can shed some light on this.
Usually when you plug in the headset
that automatically send the sound to the headphones instead of the speaker. This could be a DAC with a problem unless someone else knows a secret that I don't. Try a different headset and see if the results are the same.
Ladies!! My c-phone headset plug is not working!
I don't know what happened.  One minute it was working fine and the next day whenever I insert the headset I get no sound.  The footpedal works fine so it is not the power plug..only the headset and I also cannot get the speakerphone to work or I would use it this way.  It's one of the C-phones that have no display...I'm so upset.  I purchased it off of E-bay about 2 weeks ago for $150.  Any ideas of what I can do?  How to get the speakerphone to work.  Thank you!
Doing your blanks with the speakers helps too (no headphones) - sm
you "hear" differently. I my blanks both ways usually, helps a lot in hearing. Get tons of samples as suggested, they are great help in figuring out what that particular Dr. is saying. You do acquire an ear, takes some time though, good luck sounds like you took the bull by the horns.
Accreditation matters. It helps to avoid scams, but not always. sm
Pick a good school.  It is extremely difficult to get hired immediately, even when graduating from an accredited school.  It is a hard row to hoe.  Most companies require at least 2, usually 5 years of time on the job.  They just don't have time to train new MTs.
A special phone w/a foot pedal and headset attached for dialing directly into a system. Google it!
s
You plug it into an outlet, plug in the phone cord, hook up the
footpedal and the headset and it works.
No, the employer doesn't pay COBRA, you pay COBRA directly.
:(
Plug adapter into serial port, plug foot pedal into adapter,
plug adapter into USB port.
Speakers ???

Do many of you fellow MTs use speakers while working or just plug your headphones into computer and work that way.  For the ones that do use speakers, is the dictation clearer or louder?  I have never used speakers before and wondered if I should.

TIA

speakers

Can anyone recommend quality speakers for difficult dictators?  I have my computer volume maxed out, as well as my headphones and I still need more volume with certain dictators who whisper.  Something with an EQ built in would be great for those mumblers too.

Also, has anyone had experience with the Bose headphones?

speakers
The whisperers drive me crazy!  Did you go with the $300 set or the $140 for the Bose?
speakers
I've always used the metal "Lanier" type headphones and they've been great, but I just tried a pair of Sony "digital reference" headphones for listening to music. They are a little heavy on your head, but the sound quality is wonderful.. you hear things you couldn't before.  Having the speakers on just seems to muffle voice for me and I tend not to hear as well.  So, next to the Sonys, I would use the metal earphones. Hope this helps.
Using speakers
Does anyone plug their headphones into speakers instead of the computer?  If so, do you think the sound quality and mush mouths are better?  Thanks for your input.
Any way to avoid it?
My parents both lost hearing with age and I have seen how isolating it is.

Is there any way to avoid that with this job? I try to keep my volume down, but they way the dictators speak, I can't help but crank the volume quite a bit.

Did enough rock & roll blasting when I was young!

Any ideas?
Here's one to avoid -
My BF picked this up to try it for his laptop. It worked great for the first few days (long enough to get past the 'money back' offer), and then it suddenly began disconnecting him up to 12 to 15 times in a 4 hour period. I'm not sure about the legalities of using these types of devices to transcribe medical reports so I never tried it, but he said it was one of the most frustrating internet situations he'd ever been through.

If you've got Cricket stations in your area and they're offering their "unlimited" broad-band service for $40/month, I'd suggest applying that $40 toward a reliable service.

I have them plugged in to my speakers.
x
I haven't ever tried that since I got the speakers.
It's worth a try. I have used all the cheap headphones and had little noise. This humming is making me crazy...or is the doctors? Thanks for the tip!
You might need a better set of phones and/or speakers, too. nm
s
Thanks for that tip! I will check on that box. I do use speakers (sm)
I have always had to use some kind of external boost for audio. I have some hearing loss (I believe partly as a result of MT), and I have never gotten good enough sound just from the computer.

I used to use a Radio Shack amplifier and plug my headset into that with an adaptor jack. Now I have computer speakers with a headphone jack on one of them. It provides very good sound for one company I work for, but I recently got a side job and the sound quality isn't so good. I am definitely going to try the Sound Blaster box. I think I'm going to invest in some noise cancelling headphones that someone else on the board suggested.

This is such a great resource!
Good Speakers?
I would like to get away from headphones too.

Where do I find those speakers mentioned (or other good ones I can use)?

Right now I am plugging my headphones into $30 speakers I got at Best Buy. They sound crappy without my headphones.
Headsets / Speakers

Anyone know of good headsets that provide clarity?  I am looking for that rather than volume.

I have also thought about just using good speakers (no headset), but I am wondering if it would cause more errors of sublte wording.  It seems like it would be better on the ears but not as good for hearing.

Input is appreciated.

speakers & headphones

I'm looking for any recommendations for new speakers and headphones for my computer.  I'm starting a new account and the audio isn't all that great, I was just wondering if upgrading my speakers and headphones would make things better.

Thanx for any information.

Using both headphones/speakers
On the same subject sort of, I have my headphones plugged into speakers so that I can unplug them and listen through speakers.  How can I do both, i.e. have internet radio in the background while I transcribe with headphones on?  Thanks
It can be fun if you avoid the aggravation which I try to do - sm
Yes, it does bring out the worst in people...we got up to get ice cream after my 5 & 7 y/o had finished their lunch, left out drinks and my 1 bag purchase on the table, came back after maybe 5 minutes to find 2 ladies had helped themselves to our table, I was pretty pissed, but just gathered up our stuff (only 2 seats left for 3 people) and said we needed to find a place to sit, neither lady batted an eyelid or said a word. Kids asked why we didn't stay, I said I feared I wouldn't be too polite if we had stuck around since I was ticked. So we sat at the steps of the little stage area in the food court area and they had their ice cream that way. So that was the only wrinkle in the day basically. Kids had fun, we never dealt anything too horrendous, and I got a couple things accomplished without having to deal with the hardcore nut cases.
avoid refunds
Why would you want a refund? If you're getting a refund that just means you overpaid your taxes the previous year; in effect you gave the government an interest-free loan of YOUR MONEY.
Ideally you should set up your withholding so that you end up having to pay some extra taxes when you file your return (but not so much as to trigger a penalty). That way you get to hold on to your money as long as possible and can at least earn some interest by keeping it in a CD or money market account.

Do not avoid them. They are willing to work with you
because they want you to make your payment.

Read all the letters they send you some mortgage companies will point you in the right direction like using a third party to help you get caught up.

I never thought I would get hit with foreclosure but it happened to me and luckily as the poster below, my family was able to bail me out.

I still owe my family thousands because they tacked legal fees on top of what I owed and the mortgage company not only wanted what was late but also two month's mortgage in advance all in one lump sum!

Good luck...
Just want to avoid the same mistake...nm
x
None. I try to avoid caffeine.
nm
Yes, have done my own...avoid going to docs where I know...sm
the MT.  I would not want anyone I know doing mine.
I would like to know to, so I can avoid applying
there. 3 cpl is awful.
very good quality speakers

Hi,

Does anyone have a particular brand name, other than Bose (much TOO expensive) of speakers that you use for you job.  I had good amplified speakers that you can wear a headset with, but 1 of them is no longer any good.  Warranty is over with.  Any suggestions?  Thanks

Laptop does not have good speakers so I run

To Laptop does not have good speakers

Excellent idea!!!!!!  I love my Bose radio....it's the type without a CD changer...BUT! one of my cats, Kazie, a brat cat, sits on top of the radio and either turns the radio on, changes the time and a few times the alarm time, turns the volume upupupup (wonderful at 3 a.m.) and anything else that only a cat can do. Even with a book on top, she seems to know if she moves her weight around, she can do one or two of the above!!!      She's even tipped the bedside light over on me. All of this is because she's hungry and wants to eat NOW!!!! But, I love her.

hoped to use the speakers in background
instead of having both come through the headphones. Would probably have to have two soundcards or something.
I do have kids. They can have pop and chips, but I try to avoid it.
And Iecture them on the value of healthy food.  LOL  My diet used to be horrible until it caught up with me with my last pregnancy.  I was frequently hypoglycemic and had high blood sugar.  Then I had two irregular EKGs before a surgery.  I've basically been scared into becoming healthier.
I definitely think its best to avoid relatives this year.
I'll join you for a toast on Thanksgiving?  The idea of being alone during the holidays still sucks, but its a change from the strain of being with relatives, and a first.  Might be kinda nice I guess.
Avoid Focus Infomatics!
I worked for Focus for a couple of months, and I absolutely hated it! They offshore their QA and tech support to India, and you can never understand a work they are saying when they call you to train you on their software, which is the worst program that I have ever transcribed in. It was always freezing up, losing connection to the VPN, and it cost me so much money because I kept losing work that I had done. Their tech support would take forever to respond when I IM'd them, and they were hardly ever very helpful at all. It is also true that they deduct pay for mistakes. I now work full-time for Cymed, and I am so much happier!
The only way I've found to avoid this is to.....

have three part-time jobs.  I used to have one full time and two part time, but just recently went to three part time.

I NEVER run out of work now, but always have in the past six years in the business.  This works for me, but took almost a year to balance the three so I'm not working a ton of hours.

You said THAT right! Most people avoid her type

plug
Radio Shack...easy, cheap.
For a while I used a splitter in the back for my speakers and headphones- sm
but now I use the front jack (my old computer did not have this option) for my headphones, but my speakers automatically do not work if my headphones are plugged in. You might need to just unplug your speakers in order for your headphones to work while plugged into the computer. Just try different plug configurations and see what works.
Does anyone have their earphones plugged into their tower instead of speakers?? (sm)
I have a coworker who does not have an earphone plug-in on her speakers but she does on her tower.  Does anyone know how to configure this to be able to hear through her earphones when plugged into the tower?  Thank you in advance.
