Check the grad board, if you are indeed a grad . . .

There is a thread titled, "RMT/CMT Review classes" posted by Susan.  You are right in that the guide is $49.95, but there IS a fee for the actual classes.  It's just discounted if you're a grad.

So, argue all you want, but it's all right there in that thread.  Perhaps you had one of the "free registration" codes.  There were a few available.  Otherwise, it is $50 for a grad.

I have to buy a new puter and was told by employer NOT to get Vista.
xx
I was told to contact escription before going to Vista.
I still have XP though.
You can always have the Vista taken off a new computer,
buy XP and have it loaded on.
My new computer came with Vista too, but....
When my hard drive crashed earlier this year, we HAD to get a new computer. Of course it came with Vista. So what my commputer guy did was somehow partition (?) my hard drive and now I have both Vista and XP Pro. Eventually XP is not going to be supported any more and then for me, Vista will be a free upgrade as I already have it on my machine. My tech guy rocks!!

That might be something to consider.
Also was told Office 2007 is meant for Vista.
It requires a lot more power than most machines have with Windows XP.
Can someone tell me how to have Vista and XP on same desktop computer?
Someone said a post was on this board, but I have not found it yet.  What does this process entail, please.  I don't want to get rid of Vista, but have both XP and Vista running on the same computer.  TIA
You're trying to download XP onto a computer that already has Vista?

The only way I know of that you can do that is to reformat your hard drive, then install XP Pro. You have to have the full version of XP Pro to do that, not the upgrade.

Windows generally doesn't let you go "backwards" with an OS that is already installed without reformatting. And if it's an OEM system (if you bought it with Vista already installed), I would advise taking it to a computer shop and having them do it. You will save yourself a LOT of frustration.

Just My Humble - but Informed - Opinion.

computer wizard question-vista
I have a laptop with vista that I purchased a few months back. Some companies are telling me its not compatable with their programs yet. Do you think I should try it first instead of downgrading to XP?  Does it harm the computer if it does not work?  I know of some people being told it will not work and then in the end vista was working okay with a company's platform.  I know docuscribe works with it okay even though tech will tell you it doesn't.  TIA
Looking for computer tech guru to take Vista to XP...sm
I need to move a Vista computer to XP Home.  Bought the Vista system, but is not compatible with a bunch of stuff.  Have a copy of XP Home that will work.  Anybody that can help with that?  TIA
Question. I have Windows XP now on my computer which is getting slow. I do not want Vista
so what do I do if you cannot buy XP or what is the situation with that if your computer goes and you dont want Vista.
FYI Blew motherboard. Need new puter. Was told not to get Vista as not compatible with work program

I was told my a computer tech that if you have more than 1
firewall that they disable each other.
Slow computer, told need more RAM
My computer now has been really slow lately and checked and found to have 768 MB, told I need to increase to at least 1.5 or 2 gb which my computer can handle. My question is this, since it is gonna cost me approximately $140 or so, is this worth it, will I be able to tell the difference in the speed? Right now I am sitting waiting for some words to appear on the screen, very frustrating. Thanks!
I was told firmly by the Monrovia techs I had to have an XP computer for DQS, and that

True. I was told this by a friend who is a computer tech at a company
here in town. He was going to do it for me. No way would I try to do it myself. Luckily, I was able to buy one with XP on it from Dell.
I was told today that all the big computer companies offshore their technical service. Does anyone

What virus program/internet security do you use - always used Norton, but a computer tech told me

as a new grad

I really feel you should work for a company *in their office* and get at least two years of experience before you try to wing it on your own.

MT-grad-job hunting-need help!

Hi Everyone,

Recent grad here and an option after grad was to train with Scribes(a company that has an account set up with the school-Canscribe,to allow students to transcribe reports which get passed on to Editor for screening and feedback. Basically like you are on probation until they tell you that you no longer need it, but you are not paid, it is just training. I was just on my 3rd day when I was told that there was an aquisition pending and the training was on hold till furthr notice and to feel free to seek employment.   I have been reading  a lot on this forum about companies the school has recommended I apply to, such as Medquist, Spheris. I am confused and scared. Please guide me in the right direction to avoid a bad experience. What companies will give recent grads a chance? Appreciate any advice.

Grad needs advice

Hi,

Recent grad here on a job search. I am learning so much from this forum about MT companies. I live in Ontario and wish to MT from home. Does anyone know who is likely to hire-who is good to work for if you are a recent grad that will provide you with support/QA screening-who NOT to work for ect....Please let me know and thanks so much!

grad gifts

I think that it varies throughout the country and the circumstances.

My husband and I are on a budget so we don't spend much.  For his great-nieces and nephews, we send a card with gift certificates for fast food restaurants and it is for 5 bucks.  Might not sound like much to many but they seem to appreciate it and we feel better not breaking the bank.  He has a huge family and to do more would be tough.

Just was at a grad party and met one of my former MDs

new grad of a big 3 school

Hello, I am a new grad of the Everett Community College program which partners with Career Step.

I posted my resume and got a response from a company that expected me to drop everything at dinner time to do their timed test (I emailed them back at 6 pm Pacific time saying I would be happy to do their timed test, that I would check my email the next morning at 9 am and have the test back to them by 10 am). I got a reply saying first come first served and nothing since then.

Maybe I don't want to work for a company like this anyway!  : ( When someone says jump, I am not going to say how high. I graduated from an excellent program, and I am not a desparate mom with 3 kids at home who will jump through hoops to work from home (I have no kids yet - learned MT to be well-prepared before we choose to do that). The pay was 7 cpl and they refused to give me details such as IC vs stat employee vs employee pay, and benefits.

Um, you aren't a grad yet, I see . . .

having just turned in your PE today.  Once you have officially graduated and have access to the Grad Forum, you will see there is indeed now a charge for the RMT/CMT classes.

Good luck with your PE, and I'll see you on the *other side!*

grad. announcements, more info.
According to this website I do have the right idea.......

When to Send Announcements

If the announcement is being sent as an invitation to the ceremony and/or a graduation party, they should be sent out 10-14 days before the event. If it is just being used to announce the accomplishment of graduation, it is still proper to send it up to 14 days after the ceremony. -----am posting this in case the link below does not work----     http://parentingteens.about.com/cs/graduation/a/gradannounce.htm

Doesn't this just chap? A new MT grad is better than 15 yrs exp?

In the September 2006 Plexus Magazine for AAMT members and Student members, Dee Thomas of Thomas Transcription wrote a letter to the editor. Below is what particularly caught my eye.

"Last week, I ased my staff a question: "Does anyone care about quality anymore?" You know how strong I am on doing it right the first time and proofing the line above. These days, I'd rather hire an M-Tec student with tech savvy than to hire an MT with 15 years' experience in a hospital environment because that's all she has -- a hospital environment that gave her absolutely no feedback or tech savvy for the future, which is now inevitably upon us. It's sad but true."

High school grad announcements - pls sm
Hoping one of you moms have already been through this. How far in advance of the big day do you send out the announcements? Thank you.
I'm just starting out, new grad, and am getting 4cpl on full QA....

... I know it is a bit low, but I figure I need the experience and will take what I get for now.  When I'm off full QA my rate is supposed to go up.  I'm not making much at all, but the experience is invaluable.  Like I said though, I'm new to the industry and do not know what a fair/good rate is or used to be.

I applied to a lot of companies and was told constantly that I needed experience to get a job.  I do wish they'd give new graduates more of a chance, but those of us with no experience have to take what we can get, maybe that is contributing to lower rates all around.

I was told I needed 2 phone lines, but was told I was dialing into the doctors' system. What woul

Question about transfering computer into to another computer.. sm

I have a dumb question - Just bought a new computer and someone told me to get a flash drive to transfer all my info.  But I'm assuming that ExText that I work off of and Escription will have to be downloaded again by the tech people onto my new computer.  I can tranfer these can I?

Thanks

How does one find out the computer specs on my computer?

I should know this, but I just don't remember how to do this.  I am hoping I have enough RAM, or whatever, to load work platform on my own computer and begin working on it, rather than paying *rent* on the company-furnished computer.  Thanks so much.

A computer is a computer, whether it be laptop or desktop.
I have both and use both and I bought both of mine...most companies do not provide computers...

VISTA
Has anyone done transcription in VISTA, the VA program? Just wondering how easy/difficult it is. I am starting a new p/t account soon and will be doing transcription in VISTA, and I know absolutely NOTHING about it.

Thanks in advance.
VISTA
Not easy to transcribe in VISTA. Can you transcribe using Word or WP and then upload your reports to VISTA? That would be simpler. VISTA has no spell check; it is very hard to make production in VISTA, as it was and still is an older version of word processing.
Vista
I'm not going with Vista either until the "bugs" are worked out. I've heard that many of our programs (Word 2003, WP, etc.) will NOT work with this. I'm sticking with XP for now.
Vista
Has anyone heard much about Vista, good, bad or otherwise?  I'm wondering if it's worth getting.
Vista
I don't know if Vista has this feature or not, but in Windows XP Pro, you can right click on a program icon, click properties..click compatibilities...click "run this program in compatibility for:" and then you could chose older operating systems, if you needed to.  If Vista or Vista Business Edition has this it might be an option.  I don't know how well it worked in XP because I never needed to use it.  Still, a lot of people seem unhappy with Vista for various reasons.  I'm afraid to try it for about a year until they get the bugs worked out.  If, heaven forbid my computer crashes, I'll re-load Windows XP Pro.
To vista or not to vista...

Microsoft's new operating system, Vista, was released a couple weeks ago.  We here at Emmaus have spent weeks studying the documentation, and making the necessary adjustments in our software to be Vista-friendly.  All the applications will now run just fine under Vista (and users installing onto Windows 2000 or WinXP will see no obvious difference).

But I do not think Microsoft designed Vista for the home computer. My impression is it is wonderful for a huge corporation, e.g. General Motors, but is going to give the home user fits.  Most older applications will not run reliably under Vista.  Most older printers will not work under Vista.  And forget about on-line banking and any site that needs an ActiveX control in a web page: They just won't work under Vista.

You see, Microsoft needed to improve security from hacker attacks. They accomplished this with an operating system edict: Applications must run as a limited user.  The consequence of that is programs have traditionally saved user data in their folder under Program Files.  Under Vista they can't do that. It must be saved to %LocalAppData% for a limited user, and for an Administrator to %AppData%. Although MS has tried a kludge to accommodate older programs (by use of what they have termed Virtual Directories), it isn't very successful.

I heard some television commentator saying that Vista was the best thing that ever happened to encourage Apple computer sales. Probably for the short term, he's right, but when Apple gets a user share of the market of 20 to 30%, then hackers will have a field-day wrecking Apples.

So, in my humble opinion, should you upgrade to a Vista computer? No. (But if you do our software, MPWord, MPTools and MPSentinel are ready for you.)

Best wishes,

Vann Joe

Do you use MS Vista? I need to have MS-XP
nm
Vista
i don't think MS will give a hoot about us and our programs, to be honest.  i think it will be the other way around...our IT people will have to re-design our programs to work with Vista.  and i doubt that any IT will be willing to start that endeavour until Vista had gotten the bugs worked out.  Stick with XP and let others find out what the problems are with Vista and wait for that to get resolved is my opinion.
vista

I got a new computer with Vista and I had to take it back.  It is not compatible with a lot of the transcribing programs.  Check with your company.  I am starting an ER account with KS and I think they use Extext.  They told me it would not work.
