question...

do you have a contract with them? Any reference to any of the matter at hand in it?

It just seems a little "sitdown" is necessary, ideally good natured, where somehow you try to explain legally you have the right to hire a subcontractor and that it is a positive thing. Sell it to them. It will improve turnaround time.

This whole convo has taken a real turn south on this board, but to get back to the issue at hand... sure, they can get rid of you if you tick them off by hiring some help, but they could also get rid of you if you can't get the work done, and most certainly if you get too burned out you won't keep up with the work, vacation or no vacation.

So, I guess my thinking is, I'd be really tempted to go ahead and hire a subcontractor if you can find one. If you're worried about losing the account to the subcontractor, then you include a noncompete clause in your contract with him/her. I think that's SOP anyway, no?

And, if you lose the client, it just sounds like one of those that there's no pleasing. They do exist.

You're in a tricky position because you had no previous experience; they have an unusual power over you. I wonder if there is a delicate and tactful way for you to at least try to turn this into a more professional situation that is more workable, slowly, and build their trust. And if it doesn't work out, at least you will know you tried, perhaps you can find another client, and maybe you learned some good skills in the process.

Another interesting thing to consider is that they just might have a hard time finding someone else if they suddenly lost their MTs anyway, with the way they want to handle things. They may be hardballing for this reason.

HTH.
