I'll give you an example right now.  I'm browsing the internet for proofreading/editing positions for magazines, books.  I've been a proofreader of documents now over 10 years, i've journaled, I write poetry, I took a placement test and got into honors English.  All the jobs i've seen looking for a proofreader/editor want either an English degree, or in the process of getting your MBA.  I think i'm a natural writer, but without that piece of paper called a degree, they are not even interested in what skills I may have.  The starting salary with these jobs is 35,000-40,000.
