Spheris will hire grads
from Career Step without even making them take an employment test. There are many other large nationals who allow grads from CS, M-Tec and especially Andrews to take their employment test, and if they pass, they are hired WITHOUT 2 years experience.

Don't call it BS if you don't know what you are talking about.

Most companies will not hire grads of the "cheap" schools, so it's a waste of money.
Their courses are crap, and the people who do the hiring know it. They don't teach you anywhere near enough for you to be able to work at home on your own.

Also, you will have very little time to study/learn (or work, for that matter) with that many children. You need it quiet, and you need to be able to concentrate. You can't do this job with children running around, or on your lap, or at your feet. You have to do it when they are sleeping, or at school, or have someone watch them (which will most likely cost you money).
This issue
I have to just say that there are times when my children like to watch TV and we ONLY watch things that are geared towards learning and school readiness. I do like to work during that time. I really don't think that the original poster is trying to say that the TV is her babysitter. She just knows that it helps give you a little bit of extra time to get a little bit of work done. My children are two and three also. They have lots of special time with Mommy and Daddy, but they know I work during their favorite shows. We are in playgroups twice a week and they spend time twice a week with thier granddad. He loves that one on one and it is very affordable, obviously!! Your kids can watch TV, but just make sure they are doing lots of other stimulating and social things. It really takes time to do what is best for YOUR family. Please do not let anyone tell you the right way to parent your own children. We get along just fine with an hour or so of TV a day. Sometimes more depending on how the day is going. I have polite, sweet, cheery, social, adorable, loving children and on some days Barney is their best friend. So what!!There comes a point when you have relax, spend time with the kids and work when it is convenient. Until my kids are in school full time, we are taking things as they come and I found a flexible company to do that. Good luck.
I have the same issue

I have new headphones too so I don't think it's a headphone issue here.  Unfortunately, the tape quality is so poor I don't think hearing from both sides will make much of a difference - at least for me anyway.  I just deal with it.  :)


 


I don't know if it would be an issue if you

lived overseas.  Many ads say no offshore MTs, but I don't know how they feel about an American that was overseas and if that would an issue for you or not. 


 


Some input on the AHP issue
I am an MTSO. I hire MTs. I have learned through bitter experience that applicants who received their training through PCDI or AHP do not have sufficient skills to perform at a level I consider acceptable, so I no longer even bother to test them. It is a waste of their time and mine. I am not aware of any MTSOs in my area who look favorably on applicants "trained" by AHP or PCDI.

You will hear from a few people who say they became employed with substandard training. They were not hired by me or by anyone I know in the MT business.

In testing I don't see an issue either way, but in
real dictation q.d. should always be daily.  Putting q.d. after a medication is where there was an issue that caused it to be changed to daily to start with.

Someone also commented that Hillary had said the same thing. I put that some companies have decided to bring there stuff back home anyways. Saw it on the evening news one night. Don't ask when since I have a hard time remembering which day of the week it is these days. So hopefully whatever happens with the presidential election they will see that this is very important to offer more jobs to the US citizens that so desperately need to work.

One issue not addressed by "Threats to MT"...
When people are discussing the future of the MT occupation, most of the talk about threats revolves around outsourcing, EMRs, and VR technology. One thing I HAVEN'T seen mentioned is the potential effect any significant reforms in the US health care system would have on those employed in these kinds of positions. If we change the way health care works in this country, it isn't inconceivable that jobs like MT and coding would be dramatically impacted. Has anyone done any thinking about this? Granted, reforms - if they happen - are not likely to take place anytime terribly soon, but it still seems like a reasonable topic for discussion, particularly since the government is now actively discussing this as a priority measure.

my work/child care issue
I was having the same issue. I was having my 3-year-old daughter go to my sister's to save money and one morning, she refused to get out of the van. What I did was change my hours from 4-8 AM and 2-6 PM. These hours work perfect for me. She gets up around 7 and I will take 10 minutes to get her breakfast. She knows that when I am done working, I will get her dressed, etc. My line count DOUBLED when I changed to this. She is getting so much more attention from me, my house isn't trashed and if I go to bed at 9, i get 7 hours of sleep. Getting up that early stinks, but it is working absolutely perfect in every other aspect. My son and husband get home around 3 and 3:30, so she only has to occupy herself or watch cartoons for about 1-2 hours.

I'm sure you will find something that will work for you and your family.
They'll need your SS# to issue your 1099 at the end of the year.

All I can tell you is I have been watching this issue very closely for the past 5 years...

and have seen a definite trend afoot. Let me say I have over 20 years experience in health care and MT. I also own a transcription service. I spend a lot of time networking with other people in this field. This is what I see.


1) Nearly all the major transcription services have gone to Voice Recognition platforms.(See Company Board) When they did this, they chopped the wages in half, with the idea that you should be able to produce twice as much edited work as transcribed work. However, this penalizes the fast experienced transcriptionist. It was nothing to be able to make $30-$40 an hour if you were good. As an editor, you make approximately $12. It is very difficult to increase production as an Editor - there are just not many tricks.  In addition, they also have gone offshore, nearly 100% of the big companies. We are not talking small change here. We are talking about a major shift.


2) A significant number of medical offices are switching to electronic medical record systems (EMR) which often have a computerized charting component that would replace medical transcription. We definitely are seeing FREQUENT posts about people losing accounts to EMR.


3) Every year, the physicians coming out of medical school are more and more comfortable with technology.  They live and breath with their laptops. They pay their bills on-line, they get their music on line, they find houses, cars and dates on line. They can type faster than I can. They will certainly be even less resistant to technology.


4) The AAMT which could have been the unified voice among MT's to deal with these challenges, has sold out for getting more members overseas - an untapped market to buy books, training, and equipment. $Cha-Ching$! And they ditched us.


So, say you have 150,000 jobs in an industry and 1/3 are lost to off shore and 1/3 are lost to voice recognition and EMR. What kind of competition do you think is going to be left among the remaining 1/3?   Do you think you, as a newbie, are going to be able to compete? Do you think wages are going to go UP if there are more than enough transcriptionists, all competing for the same job?


So you can be scared and upset and deny it's happening...or you can adapt...Me? I enrolled in nursing school. When MT collapses, which I believe it is on the verge of, I will be ready.

Most companies will not hire
you before completing your course unless you attend Career Step, M-Tech or Andrews. Allied is not good with helping you obtain a position, they only help with your resume and directing you towards companies that test. You can try testing with MT companies, but be aware that if you do not pass you may have to wait 6 months before retesting. Good luck.
Yes, Spheris will hire you...
You don't have to go to CS to get hired on at Spheris. You will have to pass their employment test (unless they have some kind of deal with TRS). The reason that Spheris started their program with Career Step is that the majority of CS grad new hires were unable to perform adequately in acute care positions with the education they received with the regular course materials.

Are all those people who are begging for work lying?

Just because some people get lucky and get jobs regardless of their training (or lack thereof) certainly doesn't mean everyone will get lucky.
New hire within a week, put no experience
I graduated from Career Step and a week later I had a job lined up as an IC.  In every application I sent out, I made sure that the employers were aware that I was just starting out.  I DID NOT say that I had 2 years of experience.  Career Step does not say to use their education as experience when applying.  Many companies recognize CS as a decent school and these companies will give us a shot.

Employers will hire new graduates of
well-regarded MT schools, schools such as Andrews, M-Tec, and Career Step. Unfortunately, PCDI has a very poor reputation among MT employers, so it might be that that is causing the problem rather than lack of experience since many well-known MT employers will waive the two-year experience requirement for graduates of schools that are known to turn out job-ready MTs (Andrews, M-Tec, and Career Step). You might have better luck with a local doctor's office or clinic that does only one specialty. If you continue to have difficulty finding work, you might want to consider supplementing whatever training you got throught PCDI with a course from one of the "Big Three". Their graduates generally have several job offers upon graduation, plus those schools provide placement advice and assistance to their graduates.

Companies that Hire Newbies
Amy there are companies that hire newbies. Network with other transcripitionists at either a yahoo or msn group,or join as many as possible. They have links in their groups of companies that hire newbies. Hope that helps.
MTSOs are sometimes more willing to hire newbies.
It could be a good way to get experience and sometimes better than a national.
I would rather hire someone with years of experience
and could care less what school they went to, than someone with no experience who came from the Big Three.  Experience is valuable!

Which companies hire newbie MTs?
 
There are companies that will hire from the resumes and do
not post ads, so posting resume if your best bet for an at-home position.   You have to be careful though as there are some companies who are not honest companies so come here and ask or research the company board.   It should be much easier for you having graduated from M-Tec.

TRSI claims to hire you...
after graduation at their own company but that is a crock. They forget to say, "IF you pass our test" and then find a reason why you didn't pass. So they took your money and leave you without a job, which is what happened to me.
Every time I offered to hire newbies...
they told me they wanted 6-8 cents a line, some even asked for 10! I'm through with hiring new people that I have to train about every single thing in the business, from research to finding doctor's names, to software, to file transfer protocols, to long distance packages, etc. They take up all my time when I have other MT's with tons of experience who will do it for 7. Plug N Play.
Headhunters hire for big shot hot jobs...sm
not MT positions that have 100 applicants applying for 1 job. They are a pre-screening tool used for companies who need executives and don't want to wade through them but just want to interview among the cream of the crop. You'll have to break into the business the old fashioned way, I guess.
Never heard of them, probably wouldn't hire a student from them.
Best advice I can give: Invest in an education that gives a recruiter warm fuzzies, and be on top/near the top of that class.

We only hire a New Graduate with 8 months experience or more
We no longer hire new graduates right out of an MT program. We recently did away with our Apprenticeship Training Program and only hire new graduates with 8 months or more of MT experience.

This is just a heads up for what it is worth:


My employer used to intern and hire Career Step grads, but no more.  They just were not ready and we had far too many newbies quit almost right away.


Hope I don't pop someone's bubble, but I'd think this might be prevalent with other companies too.


I'm told that Career Step's transcription typing classes are too weak.  Also, too much isolating study that bores the students and results in inadequate skills.


Career Step may be trying to achieve too much with their "server format" when it comes to actual typing.

I am in the same boat. Recent grad that has applied to numerous companies-I think I am running out of options. Single parent with 2 children and stressed about where to go from here. May have to get a job doing something all together different just to get by. Feel I am running out of time and don't know what to think or what to do or where to go.

NO. Not all CS grads do. Those who want to be
do Spheris sample reports instead of the CareerStep advanced portion of the course. Most people who go to CareerStep do NOT go through the Spheris Training Track. I didn't.

It looks Medquist is hiring for new MT Grads.  I know there were some looking for a position to get their feet wet.  They are currently looking for new grads at Medquist.
