    Snort-ol'MT
guess it's true what they say about this board. Bunch of ol'hags

well, Snort-old MT-I do not think that the other newbies
had any type of entitlement attitude or that she new everything from her schooling. Wow! Your attitude is really negative.
    Just not into it today
I am having one of those days where I am just not that into the job.  I am trying to psych myself up to keep going just 30-45 min longer today.  The new job euphoria is wearing off. The soft talker is really irritating me - I just want to throw the headphones across the room. aaack just a little bit longer today, then 4 hours off.  Tonight it is back on the chain gang......
    Being an MT today
Thank you for your post! I am going to print it out and give it to all of the people who think I am crazy for getting out of MT, thinking it's such a perfect job just because I can work from home. I have spent the last couple of years busting my hind end to learn MT and to land a job that was perfect for my situation, only to have the company I worked for outsource all of the good dictators to India, leaving me all the crap work and being unable to earn a decent paycheck. All said and done, I was down to $50 a week for 25 hours of work a week. Not worth it at all! I will gladly drive 7 miles to work at Wal-Mart and have a lot less headaches!!!
    I graduated M-Tec Today

    Woo Hoo !!!!!

    Interview today - questions

I posted below about the ad I saw in our paper and whether it seemed legit. I discovered that it was placed by a small MTSO in our town and he is calling me today to discuss the position. He has seen my resume and responded positively to it.  I don't have specific MT training (just nursing and allied health education background) but he is wanting to train the new employees and as I am trying to figure out if I want to go to a good MT school and make a career out of this, this would be a good testing ground for me, since he seems willing to work with complete newbies.

I am not ready to work 40 hrs/wk as an MT for many reasons (most important of which is I am not trained to be one and 40 hours would kill me I would bet!). I am hoping there is the possibility of working PT 10-15 hrs per week either as an employee or contractor.  As a matter of fact, I have decided the only way I would take the job if offered is if I could work nights and weekends from home (when kids are asleep) so I don't have to worry yet about daycare costs or the hassle of school breaks cutting in on when I am supposed to be working.

I have my list of standard questions ready but am not sure what is usually expected of an IC, and what I need to consider. I know my FICA/Medicare tax will double (from about 9% to about 18%) - are there other tax considerations to take into account when figuring out pay and what is acceptable?  Do ICs usually write up their own contract or does the employer make it out?  Do ICs usually provide their own equipment?  I am hoping since he is new, he is digital and I would just have to get a wav pedal and not have to run tapes and reports back and forth across town every day.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

i just got a letter from focus today
and it said that they do not pay during the 2-3 week training period.  i'm so confused.  will i get paid or not?
Oh yeah, like I said, it
will help you because the terminology, etc will come easier to you than someone who has never heard any of that before, but still, I think in order to actually be an MT, it does take the full training. Also, most companies won't hire you until you have done the full training.
    Yeah, but...
In other words, the payment you make in April 2006 has to be for the tax year 2006?
    yeah right lol
    nm
    Oh yeah!

I have this and the lumbar support cushion.  Heaven!!  I sleep on a Tempur-Pedic mattress, too.

    Yeah, this is the guy...
Who was going to call me in 3-5 minutes, a over a week ago.

    yeah...
I just don't have a good feeling about it. Has anyone else received anything similar from here?

    Thanks
    yeah, ok
    ok so I messed up...
    yeah but but but
the thing is -- actual work experience, actually working at home without help, does make a big big difference. Being able to work the different work platforms, or some experience working some platform.  Knowing how to solve problems THEN we get to the terrible terrible dictators.  Sometimes, all I can hear is a tongue mumbling amd flicking back and forth inside the mouth.  Unbelievable what is expected from MT with absolute perfection.
    Yeah, ask about "placement."
    nm
    Yeah, what's the big secret?
    nm
Yeah..again..I was talking to NEW MTs
    x
Yeah, right, like we will see that same post in another 10 years or even 5. (nm)
    x
Yeah, and if you can't make it as an MT after taking the VLC course,
you can always take their basket making class.
    Oh yeah, that's real nice
You ought to be ashamed of yourself to say that you are helping people when you are dangling a position in her face, and then have enough nerve to rant about it.  Everyone has a different situation.  So, she says she is Mom first, aren't we all?  Geez....  You people are amazing.  Lisa, I commend you, for standing up for yourself.  You'll make it in this business because it does take assertiveness whether it be now or in the future.  Do not think for one minute there are not people in this field choosing their own hours so they can be mothers plus have an income.  God bless, good luck, and take care of your children and your business as they only have one mother, but there are plenty of jobs out there for the taking.
Yeah, it's called Caller ID - nm
    xx
Yeah, it's a tough call (SM)
Like you said, it depends on the person.  Regardless, there's a big learning curve for getting it right in this career.  I hope for the best for the OP!
Yeah, I wondered the same thing...

Yeah, I know what you mean. I tried to do it all for years with small kids,
schooling, learning a new job, handling the household and finances. Something's going to suffer, and most likely, EVERYTHING will suffer. We can't do it all by ourselves and we shouldn't be expected to. Unfortunately, smacking someone upside the head with a 2x4 is considered assault, but smacking them upside the head with a legal document outlining child support amounts and visitation requirements is quite effective.
LOL Yeah, you've MASTERED those subjects. LOL
    LOL
LOL Yeah, you've MASTERED those subjects. LOL
I don't see anything funny about that. I have spent extra time doing extra work because I really want to be the best that I can be. I have been tested and passed with a 98 for everything, except for Pharmacology because they don't offer that in the school that I am in. I am very motivated and don't mind going the extra mile to be the best that I can be. I'm sorry that you don't think anyone could do this. Yes, things are always changing and as they change I will be up to date with all of the changes.
lol yeah, you've MASTERED those subjects lol
I'm not in school fot MT, I'm in school for Medical Office Specialist Billing/Coding, so they don't offer pharmacology. I wasn't boasting, I was clearly stating that I have mastered the subjects that I have taken and believe I could do very well with an MT position with the knowledge that I have now. You don't need to do the work in order to master the subject matter. Mastering the subject and the job is 2 different things, but I guess you don't know that, being that you have done the job for 25 years. Thanks for being encouraging. ;)
Yeah, I've noticed people do that a lot here.
    nm
Yeah, like one company maybe out of multiple hundreds. Misinformed. nm
    nm
Yeah, like who? Name names if this is so. Who would want to work for Spheris to begin with? They
the biggest offshoring national out there. What's the big deal?

This bologna is repeated over and over again with no real proof of any places that hire without testing these grads just like anyone else. So, they have a deal with Spheris, big deal. There are companies much better than Spheris out there that pay better, have better accounts, care about quality and don't offshore our work!

It's all advertising. The students pay for it too, and don't think they don't.

You would cringe at what goes on behind the scenes with these schools.

You say "many" large nationals? What do you consider large? There aren't that many LARGE nationals to begin with, and the ones that are out there aren't worth the time to talk about. Been there, done that!

It is BS. All of it.
Well, at least you can see who not to hire, huh?! lol
    lol
    Most companies will not hire
you before completing your course unless you attend Career Step, M-Tech or Andrews. Allied is not good with helping you obtain a position, they only help with your resume and directing you towards companies that test. You can try testing with MT companies, but be aware that if you do not pass you may have to wait 6 months before retesting. Good luck.
    Yes, Spheris will hire you...
You don't have to go to CS to get hired on at Spheris. You will have to pass their employment test (unless they have some kind of deal with TRS). The reason that Spheris started their program with Career Step is that the majority of CS grad new hires were unable to perform adequately in acute care positions with the education they received with the regular course materials.
    Do they hire newbies?

What about all the "I can't get an MT job, nobody will hire me" posts?
Are all those people who are begging for work lying?

Just because some people get lucky and get jobs regardless of their training (or lack thereof) certainly doesn't mean everyone will get lucky.
New hire within a week, put no experience
I graduated from Career Step and a week later I had a job lined up as an IC.  In every application I sent out, I made sure that the employers were aware that I was just starting out.  I DID NOT say that I had 2 years of experience.  Career Step does not say to use their education as experience when applying.  Many companies recognize CS as a decent school and these companies will give us a shot.
Wow!!! Great response. Would hire you myself if I could!!!!!!
    nm
Sometimes hire students before they graduate. nm
    x
Employers will hire new graduates of
well-regarded MT schools, schools such as Andrews, M-Tec, and Career Step. Unfortunately, PCDI has a very poor reputation among MT employers, so it might be that that is causing the problem rather than lack of experience since many well-known MT employers will waive the two-year experience requirement for graduates of schools that are known to turn out job-ready MTs (Andrews, M-Tec, and Career Step). You might have better luck with a local doctor's office or clinic that does only one specialty. If you continue to have difficulty finding work, you might want to consider supplementing whatever training you got throught PCDI with a course from one of the "Big Three". Their graduates generally have several job offers upon graduation, plus those schools provide placement advice and assistance to their graduates.
    Online that hire newbies
Does anyone have any resources for new 'graduates' of home study/unpaid internship training in transcription to find online companies that hire newbies to work from home? Thanks for your help! :)
A dozen reasons to not hire a

Lordy, a dozen reasons to not hire a PDCI grad!
    Spheris will hire grads
from Career Step without even making them take an employment test. There are many other large nationals who allow grads from CS, M-Tec and especially Andrews to take their employment test, and if they pass, they are hired WITHOUT 2 years experience.

Don't call it BS if you don't know what you are talking about.
ANYONE will hire grads. That's not the issue...
poster was trying to say a graduate of the top 3 is equivalent in the job market to someone with 2 years experience.
    Companies that Hire Newbies
Amy there are companies that hire newbies. Network with other transcripitionists at either a yahoo or msn group,or join as many as possible. They have links in their groups of companies that hire newbies. Hope that helps.
MTSOs are sometimes more willing to hire newbies.
It could be a good way to get experience and sometimes better than a national.
I would rather hire someone with years of experience
and could care less what school they went to, than someone with no experience who came from the Big Three.  Experience is valuable!

    Which companies hire newbie MTs?

There are companies that will hire from the resumes and do
not post ads, so posting resume if your best bet for an at-home position.   You have to be careful though as there are some companies who are not honest companies so come here and ask or research the company board.   It should be much easier for you having graduated from M-Tec.
Any companies willing to hire transcriptionist
