not post ads, so posting resume if your best bet for an at-home position.   You have to be careful though as there are some companies who are not honest companies so come here and ask or research the company board.   It should be much easier for you having graduated from M-Tec.

Most companies will not hire
you before completing your course unless you attend Career Step, M-Tech or Andrews. Allied is not good with helping you obtain a position, they only help with your resume and directing you towards companies that test. You can try testing with MT companies, but be aware that if you do not pass you may have to wait 6 months before retesting. Good luck.

Amy there are companies that hire newbies. Network with other transcripitionists at either a yahoo or msn group,or join as many as possible. They have links in their groups of companies that hire newbies. Hope that helps.

Most companies will not hire grads of the "cheap" schools, so it's a waste of money.
Their courses are crap, and the people who do the hiring know it. They don't teach you anywhere near enough for you to be able to work at home on your own.

Also, you will have very little time to study/learn (or work, for that matter) with that many children. You need it quiet, and you need to be able to concentrate. You can't do this job with children running around, or on your lap, or at your feet. You have to do it when they are sleeping, or at school, or have someone watch them (which will most likely cost you money).

I started in the file room of a 6 doctor urology office 16 years ago and went from there. The only formal training I received was 2 semesters of medical terminology. The rest was learned on the job. The best thing, in my opinion, is to get into a doctor's office and get some experience that way. If nothing else, it will give you experience, which is what all the nationals require. I am still a student and was able to get a job.  I do acute care, mainly OP notes.  I applied everywhere.  I was finally hired at a very low rate and I worked for a few months for the experience, then I quit because of nonpayment...  Grrrr.  .    So I started sending out resumes again.  This time, I had added acute care (OP notes) to my resume and got several calls.  I found a good job as a part-time IC.  It worked out in the end.  Just keep sending in your resume.  I also send a cover letter with mine.

I am still a student but I was offered a job working from home doing OP notes.  I sent in my resume to several companies posted on the jobs board, along with a cover letter.   I tested with a few places, passed, and found a good fit for me.  I even turned down a few.  So, jobs are out there.  Keep sending in your resume with a cover letter and keep on trying.    Good luck!! 
I looked at about 500 resumes

I looked at about 500 resumes from MTs we've employed lately.  Just a small number come from M-Tec, Andrews or Career Step- about a half dozen.  I didn't do anything scientific.  I was just curious.


 


There seems to be an impression that these 3 schools are the only way to get educated in this field and get a job.


 


Our records don't bear this out.  Most of our MTs come from Community Colleges (I call them Junior Colleges) and have a 2 yr degree.  Our MTs come from all over the country too.  From what I've seen, their curriculum is heavily slanted toward HPI which is an old stand by.


 


So that info is for all the graduates from other schools who may be fearful because of what is written here.  AND again, I'll say that we don't hire any newbies without a short internship, but we pay well so we can be picky.

Send in resumes and test everywhere that will allow it.
I applied to several places while I was a student, and some places will allow you to test even though they say they require 2 years experience.  Some will waive the 2 year experience requirement if you have graduated from a medical transcription training program.  I found a job at home while in school, so it's not impossible but it does take some time.  Good luck!
Ok..I sen tout 10 resumes Saturday

I sent out 10 resumes on Saturday to local specialty Doctors as well as several Chiropractors.  I was wondering if any of you work from home or are based at the office of a Chiropractor?  I love this type of dictation as well as the idea of being in a smaller practice.  I know I can't be picky, but where did you all start out as being a new graduate and did any of you graduate from a Technical College?  I received my certificate from our local tech school and am working on my Associate Degree as I stated in my last post.  Also, what is considered "experience" in this line of work?  How can I get experience if noone will hire me?  SOrry for all of the questions.  Thanks for helping!!

Keep sending out resumes via internet and locally -
There is nothing that can make up for your lack of experience. You can just hope someone decides to give you a chance. However, where I work we would rather hire someone right out of school who has gone to one of the Big Three than someone from another school with years of transcribing under their belt. Post your resume on all the various job boards, send resumes to
local clinics/doctor's offices, apply to local hospitals.   As a newbie getting a job is hard, but some companies will hire you based on the school you got your certificate from.  Some schools are better than others and if you didn't get your certificate from one of the better ones changes are harder of getting a job.   Most likely you'll need to work in-house for a while.  There are some companies that will offer you a job, many at low to no pay, and there are a few companies that are not legit, so be sure you investigate before accepting.  If you have to fork out any money for equipment or software in order to get the job be cautious, especially if they require you to purchase it from them.

Yes, Spheris will hire you...
You don't have to go to CS to get hired on at Spheris. You will have to pass their employment test (unless they have some kind of deal with TRS). The reason that Spheris started their program with Career Step is that the majority of CS grad new hires were unable to perform adequately in acute care positions with the education they received with the regular course materials.

Just because some people get lucky and get jobs regardless of their training (or lack thereof) certainly doesn't mean everyone will get lucky.
New hire within a week, put no experience
I graduated from Career Step and a week later I had a job lined up as an IC.  In every application I sent out, I made sure that the employers were aware that I was just starting out.  I DID NOT say that I had 2 years of experience.  Career Step does not say to use their education as experience when applying.  Many companies recognize CS as a decent school and these companies will give us a shot.

Employers will hire new graduates of
well-regarded MT schools, schools such as Andrews, M-Tec, and Career Step. Unfortunately, PCDI has a very poor reputation among MT employers, so it might be that that is causing the problem rather than lack of experience since many well-known MT employers will waive the two-year experience requirement for graduates of schools that are known to turn out job-ready MTs (Andrews, M-Tec, and Career Step). You might have better luck with a local doctor's office or clinic that does only one specialty. If you continue to have difficulty finding work, you might want to consider supplementing whatever training you got throught PCDI with a course from one of the "Big Three". Their graduates generally have several job offers upon graduation, plus those schools provide placement advice and assistance to their graduates.

Spheris will hire grads
from Career Step without even making them take an employment test. There are many other large nationals who allow grads from CS, M-Tec and especially Andrews to take their employment test, and if they pass, they are hired WITHOUT 2 years experience.

Don't call it BS if you don't know what you are talking about.

poster was trying to say a graduate of the top 3 is equivalent in the job market to someone with 2 years experience.
MTSOs are sometimes more willing to hire newbies.
It could be a good way to get experience and sometimes better than a national.
I would rather hire someone with years of experience
and could care less what school they went to, than someone with no experience who came from the Big Three.  Experience is valuable!

TRSI claims to hire you...
after graduation at their own company but that is a crock. They forget to say, "IF you pass our test" and then find a reason why you didn't pass. So they took your money and leave you without a job, which is what happened to me.
Every time I offered to hire newbies...
they told me they wanted 6-8 cents a line, some even asked for 10! I'm through with hiring new people that I have to train about every single thing in the business, from research to finding doctor's names, to software, to file transfer protocols, to long distance packages, etc. They take up all my time when I have other MT's with tons of experience who will do it for 7. Plug N Play.
Headhunters hire for big shot hot jobs...sm
not MT positions that have 100 applicants applying for 1 job. They are a pre-screening tool used for companies who need executives and don't want to wade through them but just want to interview among the cream of the crop. You'll have to break into the business the old fashioned way, I guess.

Never heard of them, probably wouldn't hire a student from them.
Best advice I can give: Invest in an education that gives a recruiter warm fuzzies, and be on top/near the top of that class.

We only hire a New Graduate with 8 months experience or more
We no longer hire new graduates right out of an MT program. We recently did away with our Apprenticeship Training Program and only hire new graduates with 8 months or more of MT experience.

My Company will no longer hire Career Step

This is just a heads up for what it is worth:


My employer used to intern and hire Career Step grads, but no more.  They just were not ready and we had far too many newbies quit almost right away.


Hope I don't pop someone's bubble, but I'd think this might be prevalent with other companies too.


I'm told that Career Step's transcription typing classes are too weak.  Also, too much isolating study that bores the students and results in inadequate skills.


Career Step may be trying to achieve too much with their "server format" when it comes to actual typing.

company was sold so they have no company to hire you after graduation!
They are not a reputable school and I went there so I should know. Even when they did have Trans. Relief Services they never answered my email about employment upon graduation.
Companies probably won't
hire you if you haven't finished school. I don't know that for a fact though. Someone running their own business might though. You just have to find someone and show how knowledgable you are in the field. As to equipment, that varies depending on what the company or person needs you to have.

Hello all!


I am sure this has been asked and I have been a lot of researching for companies on line that offer benefits - not IC positions.  I have not had much success and wondered if any of you gals/guys are working such companies, are they hiring, and more importantly would they hire a Career Step grad with a little over 1 year experience?  I work at a local PT company, but am tired of driving to town every day for the tapes and making deliveries - had a taste of online work once and would like to get back to that, but need benefits!!  Thanks!!

I graduated in May and am now working for Orion Medical Transcription and love it. They are a great company and have a wonderful mentoring program. I do not know if they are presently hiring, but give them a try.

MT companies

May I suggest looking into your local community college for your medical transcription training?  Part of the course of study for my MT diploma was an internship with an actual transcription company which was a great help to get training in the real world of medical transcription and to see how a transcription company actually works.  I was able to take all the classes online, done in the time framework of actual college classes plus I've earned credits that I could use toward something else.


They have a certificate program, a diploma program (which I earned) and an associates degree program.  I know nothing about the online MT companies...but it seems to me an actual brick/mortar college adds more credibility to your credentials. I had great instructors and a location to go to when I needed to see them face to face. 


I could be wrong as I haven't checked out anything else but this would be my suggestion to those looking to earn their MT training.
