No dying breed as far as I can see
I have been a MT for over 20 years. I left a neurology practice who thought they could do better with out sourcing the transcription. It wasn't two weeks later that I found out their ideas did not work so they went to voice recognition. They have had nothing but problems with this so called technology. It is just not good for certain specialities, such as those requiring indepth detail in the reports and ever changing medications. Also, these two doctors were used to talking faster than the speed of sound and soon discovered that VR could not keep up. I was asked to return and refused. As they say, what goes around comes around. So, do not be concerned about VR. While it may have its place here and there, I feel that overall MTs are here to stay.
dying breed sm

I must agree.  We are such a dying breed.  I am convinced that literally each day there are more of us being fired, laid off, suspended, etc.  Of course, many are bailing on their own before being thrown under the bus.

Whenever I see ads for MT schools I sadly cringe.  I wonder how many (few) will break even at the very least.

I am convinced that my days or hours here are numbered, and continue wondering what else I can do.  Even in this down economy there will be many who succeed by producing the right product or service.  I constantly think about that instead of the fumes left in transcription.

It's unfortunate, but we aren't the first occupation to have this happen.

Sadly we won't be the last, either.

The only "up side" is that we will all be in good company.

Voice Recognition/ Dying Breed????

Hello!

I have been scriping and saving to afford going to MT school.  Now two ladies that I know, wives of doctors, have warned me not to spend my time and money on MT school because MTs are a dying breed and voice recognition technology is taking over the MTs work, all that is needed now are people to do data entry which pays very little.  Is this true??? Something to worry about in the future or are they just uninformed about what it is that MTs do?  Any imput would be greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks in advace,

~Kate

Disagree. MT is dying. Get out and don't loook back.

You should have a button where you compose your email to attach files. Click on that and it will take you to a window where you can browse files.  Click on that and select where your file is (desktop, folder, computer, etc.) then open the file you want to attach and your computer will do the rest, very easy once you do it once.  Your computer walks you through it most of the way.

I just learned how to do it myself, all by myself!;)

Good luck, and if you need more help, just ask. :)

I did email the owner
a couple of weeks ago and asked her if I was doing okay. She said to keep doing what I am doing because I am doing just fine. That was before I noticed that they were all looking at my reports. I really like this company, and the people are all very nice. I guess I just need to talk to the owner again before I have an anxiety attack over this. Thank you.
Here I am. See if clicking my email here

So if I had to do an encrypted email,
could I do that from yahoo, etc?
re: googling their email addy

I googled it and got nothing.  It was a rather generic gmail address, which was another flag.  Well, I emailed them with a few questions about the training (whether it was paid, local and guaranteed employment) and guess I will see.

Something more promising is available through the job office of the local tech school where I did a certificate - $10/hr (that is good here) for MT, working at home, and grads from the program I took (med coding - though it was not very throrough on the coding end of things) are allowed to apply.  Guess they aren't that picky?  But hey, if it is offered, I will take it!

I am putting in for that tonight via email and see if the job office will refer me to the employer.

Thanks for your opinion.  If they email back I will let you know what they said.

Just checked email, didn't see it
Thanks for the email. I just checked my email and did not see anything. I will keep looking, maybe there is a server delay or something. I really do want to know the real deal before taking the leap.

Thanks.

I have had some challenges with interns, some requiring longer internships than others. Other newbies have breezed right through. I average the time from 3-4 months.

You are given a variety of family practice and specialty clinic work. You must meet 97% accuracy in medical terminology, medications, grammar and formatting before referral for contract is made. You will be contracted beginning at 7 cpl.

When you graduate, you take a doctor with you, one you have mastered and will get lines immediately. I assure you this is a legitimate internship.

You also receive new terms weekly.

If you are an MT employee or MT employer pls EMAIL ME!
I need all the help i can get.  I'm submitting my package to get into the MT program by the end of June 2009 and the only thing I haven't completed is the informational interview.  I have to ask 3 MT employees and 3 MT employers a few questions about this line of work and I'll be able to get my package processed and hopefully get into the program right away.  I am on maternity leave and it's difficulty for me to leave the house and search for people.  Please help me out so I can get into this program and finally make something of myself that I can be proud of.  Thanks everyone who has taken the time to read this.  My email is carpio_cat@hotmail.com
there are email addresses on the SETT website
in case you wanted some testimonials.
There's an MT recruiter below who has been placing more MT's than ever. Contact her for email.

I've seen awful work from "experienced MTs and good work from new graduates
I've seen awful work from "experienced MTs and good work from new graduates.

Training and education really does make a difference. Some people just have 15 or 20 years of very bad experience. They may be fortunate that one employer was willing to hire and keep them, but if that one closed, they would be in trouble. It all depends on the person. some new graduates are a better bet then some experienced MTs. I would prefer to find an experienced MT with great skills and a teachable attitude, but many experienced MTs know everything and are only willing to do things the way they've always done them.
most psych work is included in multispecialty hospital work..sm
contracted to a medical transcription service that requires multispecialty experience because of the hospital work. Unfortunately, very rarely can a medical Transcriptionist these days be given only one specialty when working for a service or hospital. We have to be well versed in multi specialties. The Turn Around Time on demands have increased, and thus the service or hospital gives the MT many different types of work. Learn as many specialties and gain as much experience in different specialties, which in turn will make you a more valuable MT and more apt to gain employment.
Just be sure not to pay for work. There is an MTSO below who apparently charges to work for them (sm
It might be tempting when you're getting desperate for work to pay someone so you can work for them, but don't do it. You can buy software and a foot pedal on your own, so don't let them fool you. If you are approached via e-mail from this site by an MTSO saying they have work for you, please read the posts below before making any decisions.
Can you share where you work that the work is plentiful? nm

Work for MTs
I was hired before I even graduated or had begun job hunting by a large transcription company. It was the easiest job I have ever gotten. I was hired because I attended a top-notch school (M-TEC) and did well in the program. There are plenty of jobs for well trained MTs, even new ones.
Work through it
Type the report thorugh the first time. Look up any you are not sure of to gain understanding of the report. Listen again full through and fill in blanks. Then listen again to problem areas to pick out works. Never guess. Leave blanks where you are not sure. Any hard dictator takes time to learn and multiple listens to the voice file to complete it to the best of your ability.
FT work and PT Mt work...

can this be done or am I getting in over my head. FT in-house, not MT and PT MT at home.

Anyone else doing this?

looking for work

Hi,

I would suggest NOT going to companies.....try docs you know personally or that have their own practice.  That is how i started, just walked in, gave them a business card and flyer and made a deal, that if they gave me a chance, i would reduce the cost for the first 30 days.  i got my first doc that way five years ago and he has referred me to many and i am still with him in addition to two others he referred to me!  It is wonderful.....set your own hours, no rush on anything.  good luck!
