I need all the help i can get.  I'm submitting my package to get into the MT program by the end of June 2009 and the only thing I haven't completed is the informational interview.  I have to ask 3 MT employees and 3 MT employers a few questions about this line of work and I'll be able to get my package processed and hopefully get into the program right away.  I am on maternity leave and it's difficulty for me to leave the house and search for people.  Please help me out so I can get into this program and finally make something of myself that I can be proud of.  Thanks everyone who has taken the time to read this.  My email is carpio_cat@hotmail.com

Your employer will be counting on you
to meet a turnaround time. That will be very difficult to do with "nonspecific hours". This is a job, not a hobby you can pick up whenever you want or ignore when you don't feel like doing it. If you are not reliable, you will not be employable.
You really should discuss this with your employer or
You are setting yourself up for confusion and complete dependence on others by coming here for these kinds of answers.

Your business is between your employer and yourself (if you are an employee) or between you and your client (if you are an IC).

I have been contacte by an employer *sm*

based on my resume posted at a job site. I am in my last quarter of school. I've not spoken with the representative yet, but I am wondering if I should have disclosed that I am not actually out of school yet on my resume. I did not say either way, just the date being 2008.


My question is, how should I tactfully explain this approach. My hope is to be tested, set up, and ready to go with a company near the end of this quarter. Any ideas? I know it is not unheard of to have a company lined up to work for right out of school; is this the right approach?

It all depends on your employer (sm)

and what they require.


I work a flexible 12-hour window in which I can put in my time at any point during that time frame.  I asked for 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. which is what I stick to.  If there is a time that I need to alter that, it is pretty much always allowable as long as I notify my supervisor.  I work employee status for a hospital. 


For those that work as an inidependent contractor, they sometimes work on turn-around-time only.  They can put in there time here or there as long as the jobs are back within 24 hours' turn around time, for example.

No employer ever cared if I had a degree or not. They did
All the employers have ever cared about is whether I could do the job the way they wanted it done. Never once has anyone even asked about a degree. In this industry I don't think it's that helpful, because most of the degree programs teach you everything except how to transcribe. The employers know that. It's not a selling point on your resume. So if you have a degree, that's fine. Degrees are good. You also need to have training on there that shows you can transcribe.
You have to pass the employer's test.
No services hire solely on the basis of what school the MT graduated from.

Most of them do require an applicant to score at least 98% on their employment test. If you can't do that, how will you be able to meet their accuracy requirement when working? Their clients expect about 98% accuracy, so they have to deliver. There is no room for MTs who can't do the work.

This is why big companies require so much experience. It goes hand in hand with accuracy. The more experience you have doing acute care, i.e., hospital, dictation, the more you know and the better you'll do. If you don't have the experience, the companies know you'll flounder. They don't have time to hand-hold you or provide remedial training.

The reason some schools' graduates are granted a waiver for experience is that their training has prepared them well enough to do acceptable work even without the experience. They are trained so thoroughly that they are able to pass the employment tests with 98% accuracy and they understand the employer's expectations regarding accuracy and professionalism.

The most successful schools teach students in an atmosphere that mimics an MT work environment, with the same expectations that employers have, so the students have a firm grasp on the requirements by the time they graduate. They behave much like experienced MTs, perform much like experienced MTs, and go about getting up to speed just as an experienced MT would. That's why it's important to choose a school that tests constantly and provides competent, personalized CMT instruction, not just an answer key and a computer grader.


I'm an employer and I say it doesn't matter where you go to school.
I'm impressed by an applicant who shows the ability to follow directions, troubleshoot and stick-to-it-ness. I have seen crap come out of the big three and I have seen crap come out of community colleges and matchbook schools. I have seen superb MT's come out of community colleges and I dare say matchbook schools. As a matter of fact, I didn't even go to school. I was a paramedic and just applied for a job typing x-rays. So I say it matters more what your natural abilities are. If you a linguist and type like the dickens, and know the medical field, you don't even have to go to school.
IC vs. Employee

When I was hired by the national I am working for I was given a choice, IC or employee.  I was hired by this company right out of school.  In order to be an employee with them they required 12,000 lines per pay period (2 weeks).  Being an independent contractor had no minimum line count.  Since I was fresh out of school I knew that there was no way I could commit to 12,000 line per pay period, so I chose to be an IC.  Once I got my production up to speed, I was able to switch to employee status.  I am not sure how other companies work, but I do believe that most will give you the option to be IC or employee.  I just don't know if you can switch mid-stream or not.

Hello, I am not a Heartland employee, but I did take their test and passed with a 92. They said at the time that their training class was full  and as soon as they had an opening for training, that they would get in touch with me. I have not heard from them and that has been two months. I am a CareerStep grad. Wanda

If you are *hired by a company* then usually you are an employee...it is when you score your own accounts that you can become an IC....but I'd brush up on typing skills, no offense.....it's truly detail- oriented work and you misspelled pursue and independent...and again, no offense....


IC versus employee has nothing to do with either
IC is just a tax status.

There are plenty of MTs who get paid hourly.

It won't make any difference if you are an IC or an employee...you can get paid whatever method you are successful at negotiating with your client or employer.

Employee Position

Hi Lori,


Check with someone at Career Step.  They should offer you a listing of employers who will test their graduates.  I am an M-Tec grad, and there are many job opportunities available for graduates.  I would think that Career Step would offer the same thing.  Since you have some experience under your belt, I am sure you would have no trouble finding a job!

So I'm still not sure ... but the MT is a hospital employee, sometimes they will "weight" m
dictators so you get a little extra credit for unusually bad dictators. But that may not be a common practice everywhere.

If you are an IC, or at least once you are experienced, you might be able to negotiate a better rate for a particular MD if nobody else can or will do his dictation.

But have faith - some dictators who sound just horrible the first few times will suddenly be a breeze once you "crack the code." You will probably do that much more quickly if you have an experienced MT helping you out, listening to the difficult spots.


5.5 as an employee is good to start! sm
I started my first job at 5cpl as an IC, no benefits.  If you are offered 5.5 cpl plus benefits to start take it.  You will get more later on but you need the experience.  I've been working 7 months now and just took a new job at 7cpl.  You have to start somewhere and cannot expect to come into the industry making what experienced people are being paid/offered.  Yes, many companies post ads and say they offer 7-9cpl, but you'll also notice most of them are also asking for the MT to have 3-5 years experience.  Taking a lower wage when you are new is not belittling, it is reality.  You can always work your way up.  Also you can continue to job hunt while working and if you find better, great then switch companies.  You have to start at the bottom, but you would be surprised how quickly you can move up if you are good at what you do.  Good luck!
contracting versus employee
Can anyone tell me the pros and cons of contracting versus employee?  I have plenty of time throughout the day, but my husband works from 2:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.  This is a large chunk in the middle of shifts.  Is contracting setting the amount you will do for the day?  Like I would be able to work 6 hours but at split times throughout the day?  Any help on this would be appreciated.
Going rate per line as employee

Can anyone tell me the going rate per line for employee status?  I am currently IC, but looking for employment.  Any help appreciated. - Newbie!

Success breeds success. When I look for a leader or mentor or someone to give me advice, I look for someone who has been successful. That person will have to be able to identify his or herself and have verifiable proof to back up their claims. There are ways to do that. Blind posts on message boards don't do it.
IC or employee? There's no way you're working for a national
and making more than 8 cpl in your second year of MT. 6 is an OK rate for a newbie who's still wet behind the ears. You've never seen her resume or school transcripts. How can you tell her she's worth as much or nearly as much as experienced MTs? I won't nitpick, but newbies need serious feedback.

Email attachment

You should have a button where you compose your email to attach files. Click on that and it will take you to a window where you can browse files.  Click on that and select where your file is (desktop, folder, computer, etc.) then open the file you want to attach and your computer will do the rest, very easy once you do it once.  Your computer walks you through it most of the way.


I just learned how to do it myself, all by myself!;)

I did email the owner
a couple of weeks ago and asked her if I was doing okay. She said to keep doing what I am doing because I am doing just fine. That was before I noticed that they were all looking at my reports. I really like this company, and the people are all very nice. I guess I just need to talk to the owner again before I have an anxiety attack over this. Thank you.

re: googling their email addy

I googled it and got nothing.  It was a rather generic gmail address, which was another flag.  Well, I emailed them with a few questions about the training (whether it was paid, local and guaranteed employment) and guess I will see. 


Something more promising is available through the job office of the local tech school where I did a certificate - $10/hr (that is good here) for MT, working at home, and grads from the program I took (med coding - though it was not very throrough on the coding end of things) are allowed to apply.  Guess they aren't that picky?  But hey, if it is offered, I will take it!


I am putting in for that tonight via email and see if the job office will refer me to the employer.

I have had some challenges with interns, some requiring longer internships than others. Other newbies have breezed right through. I average the time from 3-4 months.

You are given a variety of family practice and specialty clinic work. You must meet 97% accuracy in medical terminology, medications, grammar and formatting before referral for contract is made. You will be contracted beginning at 7 cpl.

When you graduate, you take a doctor with you, one you have mastered and will get lines immediately. I assure you this is a legitimate internship.

You also receive new terms weekly.
