I happened upon a company that offers paid internships

The company is in California. If you go to their website and click on the tab entitled "Join our Team," you'll find more info.

I'm not affiliated with the company and know nothing about them, just happened upon it while job searching for myself and though new MTs or graduates might be interested.

MedLine has paid internships
after going through their program and you are qualified to work on real dictation jobs because the school is owned by a med. trans. company. It is an excellent school, I am going to it, after wasting money on TRSI's school which was horrible. They called their advanced transcription "internship" which wasn't an internship at all, and no one answered my questions or helped me and I ended up leaving there knowing nothing. Anyway see if Medline can answer your questions.
what happened to my post? nm

I'm sorry that this happened to you guys.
It's so frustrating, I sure wish more people would check into these "schools" and ask questions before they plunk down their money. For just a bit more than that $3000 you could've attended either Andrews School or M-TEC, which are the two best schools out there. And it definitely would've been cheaper than paying Allied AND then paying Career Step.

Unfortunately, even when people DO ask questions beforehand, and they are told that these schools are inferior, there's always SOMEBODY who managed to find a job after completing these bogus "courses" and they don't hesitate to insist that you don't need to pay the money for the good courses. Just because a few people get lucky, they are definitely WAY outnumbered by the people with your same complaints who cannot get hired without shelling out more money for a REAL MT education.
This personally happened to me...sm

I worked in a pharmacy and filled a prescription for a neighbor of mine whom I knew was sleeping with another freind of mine's husband.  The rx was for HIV meds.  I was seriously stressed over this.  I knew the laws but what about my friend's life?? She had a 2 year baby girl and was pregnant again.  Well, I rationalized it this way.  If I said something, I would lose my job and I had 3 kids of my own to support and I wasn't sure what the legal ramifications would be.  Also, she knew he was cheating on her and she kept him around.  That's the risk you take when you keep a cheater in your bed.  I decided my family was more important.  I eventually moved and don't have contact with her anymore so I have no idea what came of it.  But it was a very difficult situation to be in.

Also, while in MA school, our instructer told us a story of a girl who worked at a doctor's office where her neighbor was a patient.  She saw the results of her neighbors "cancer" test and when she got home that evening, called the neighbor to give her "condolances" or whatever.  Well, the neighbor hadn't gotten the results back from the doctor yet and was unaware until this girl called her.   So, the lesson being, NEVER open your mouth, no matter who or what.

Even if you so happened to start out with no ESLs,
That can change overnight. The fact is that more likely than not in this business you are going to have to get used to them. :-(
Why did you decline two offers??

Job offers...I am happy....! sm

Well, ladies (and gentlemen), I graduated from my school with High Honors at the very end of February.  I have been looking for a job for just over two weeks.  I have no medical transcription experience, but I do have about 10 years of legal transcription experience.

So far, I have been offered three jobs!  It is a wonderful feeling to know that you are wanted!  Granted, one of the positions is paying terribly (although they seem very nice, and that's important too).  The other is a sporadic assignment (not medically related).  The lady in question will call me every couple of months or so with different interviews to transcribe.  This will be nice as an added "extra" now and then, and I have already accepted her offer.  The third position is paying fair money, and they seem like a dream company--just what I am looking for!  I wanted part-time IC work (20 hours a week), all work conducted through the internet, the ability to use my own equipment and software, steady accounts, and decent pay.  I will probably go with this company!

I have told the two employers offering steady IC work that I would like a week or so to think about it, and they agreed.  I just want to make sure that I think everything through.  This way, when I accept a job, I'll know for sure that it's the company I really want to go with, and I will be the best MT I can with no regrets.

I have worked very hard for this.  I took many grueling tests, which I passed with very high marks.  I have written scores of letters and made dozens and dozens of phone calls.  I have plugged away at it religiously, and my dedication has really paid off.

To anyone out there looking for a job: Be professional, keep your chin up, and try your best everyday--and you will succeed!

The Community College I went to offers
a CMT exam after completing the program. It costs $150.00. I'm not sure of all the details though. I'm considering taking it, but haven't made up my mind yet.
She makes some very good points and offers
very useful advice. Newbies would do well to pay attention. There are plenty of professional MTs, experienced and freshly minted, who will be able to understand and follow her instructions, so I doubt she'll be spending much time on her own. She has every right to expect applicants to be able to understand and follow instructions.
Does anyone know how much actual dictation Gatlin offers? (sm)
It appears to be only a very small amount.

Anyone know for sure?
You create and submit a resume and see who offers
s
I started at 7cpl 2 years ago and had other offers for

7 cpl also from other companies.  One company, Spheris, only offered me 5.5 cpl and I turned them down.  Again, I graduated 2 years ago when I was seeing more people offered at least 7 cpl. Now, everyone from CS seems happy to work for 5 cpl.  Go figure.

Employers = Verifiable companies with job offers, often well-known nationals
What we're looking for is a source for helpful information that results in good decisions. Ask the employers means, ask employers who give their names, the names of their companies, and are job providers. That information has to be verifiable in order to be useful. No offense personally. Information is just not helpful unless it comes from an identifiable source and can be verified as being authentic and reputable.
I agree! I had 5 job offers before I even graduated! Just make sure you test well... nm

Help! Internships

Hello, I was wondering if anyone knew of good interships that I could get into. I am a new MT and would like to get my feet wet and I'm not sure where to get started. Any kind of mentoring program, internship, or apprenticeship would be helpful. Thank you.

Diana Strand

Internships
If you have completed a training program and would like to transition into MT, we have a great internship (90 days) where you will learn all you need to know to work successfully.  Most interns are hired when training is complete.  Contact for information.
Internships
Thanks you so much for the encouragement. Amazing how a few kind words can really motivate a person. By the way, do you know anything regarding internships that are offered newbies? Are these are all helpful in finding employment?
Internships

Hi.  We are currently offering a few internships to recent graduates.  You need to live in the West Cobb/Atlanta area.  These internships are not initially paid positions but will lead to a job for qualified transcriptionists.  You can reach me at Jennifer@transcribeatl.com for consideration.

Internships

Does anyone know a school that requires an external internship?  Our training department is looking for some interns that would possibly result in jobs.

Thanks,

Jen

Internships
Jen, if these are still available would you please email me at paul-n-anne-forever@cox.net ?

Thanks

Internships

This message is for Jen.  Would you please email me any information you have about VR internships or internships in general.  I am very interested in MT and need some help.  Thank you very much.

Internships

For the above post from Mary, I forgot to give you my email address: mbphilly2003@yahoo.com.  Thanks.

Internships
I have been looking for an at-home MT job and have found one company that offered an internship but it was too late. It started in January. Anyways, I was wondering if anyone knows of any companies that off the same thing for new grads.
Speaking of Internships
Did you see that thread at MTChat where the woman had no idea what she was doing, but she was in charge of the MTs who were doing their internship with her employer. I think quite a few people started thinking twice about recommending internships in lieu of good training.
Newbie work MT Internships
Just want newbies to know we have a great internship program for those who want to gain experience.  Many of our interns actually continue to work for our clients when the internship is complete.  Email me for info.  You do have to pass a test to participate.  Email me if you are interested.  We have tons of work. Email me:  corie@meditec.com if you are interested.
new mt mentoring programs or internships?

are there any good newbie MT mentoring programs out there? or internships?

thanks

Transcription schools, internships and jobs.
Transcription schools, internships and jobs.

Recently I was asked some good questions by a friend looking into becoming an MT. She was doing her homework before starting school. She had done enough research to be able to ask some really good questions.

She wanted to train and work at home. She found courses from $1200 for mail order, to $2100 from a big internet school with all kinds of other degrees offered too, and then over $3400 for a very long but good course from a school teaching only medical transcription. She also stumbled on a school offering a special course for an MT company; $1900 for the basic education, an internship and a guaranteed job.

So by then she was completely lost. She had 5 questions. I realized this is a big issue for transcription school students who can’t see the big picture. I think this whole thing stirs up most of us as we remember our training.

Her Questions:

1 How do I determine if the school offers a good basic education?
2 Do I need internship training after my basic medical transcription class?
3 If I don’t do an internship, how do I meet the two-year experience requirement so many companies require?
4 Will I be able to pass typing tests given by employers if I’ve never typed real dictation?
5 Should I take an internship with a transcription company that promises to hire me after the 6 weeks of internship?

I wanted to help and wasn’t sure how to at first. I reflected back on my training and my own internship. I’ve also seen the subject from the employer’s point of view as a QA supervisor. So I answered her this way and I’d like to see what others think. Newbies and students should get a lot out of this.

• New graduates can rarely pass typing tests no matter which school they went to from my experience.
• I have supervised initial training and internships and have found most student’s prior education to be very poor. Most new grads are not ready to produce much transcription of quality for a couple of months.
• After interning, the newbies often quit shortly after training and the investment of my time was wasted. Most quit because they didn’t like the job or the hours, it wasn’t the pay.
• What MT company would want to act as a newbie trainer and have many quit or move on to other companies? They’d have huge turnover.
• Summing up, I’d say make sure the school offers a good basic education followed by an internship and strong post graduate job support. In fact, a guaranteed job if you can find it. If they don’t offer internship and grad support they probably have a weak basic class too. Stay with the first company for 2 years to learn the profession. After 2 years you’ve got the basis of a good looking resume and your new career is dependable.

She thanked me and made her decision.

Didn't she sell it, or just your company to an offshore company. The woman

has a screw loose.

No, the woman who owns this company can't transcribe herself, much less run a company.

Any company that charges anything to work is not a reputable company. However,
if a company offers a job and requires that you have a certain pedal and offers to provide it and then take it out of say your first paycheck or couple of paychecks, then that is acceptable.

My belief is that companies that charge you for software or anything else is trying to make money off of you.

While $11.95 isn't much, figure that amount times 10 or 20 or 100 and what do you come up with? Smells like a scam to me.
company was sold so they have no company to hire you after graduation!
They are not a reputable school and I went there so I should know. Even when they did have Trans. Relief Services they never answered my email about employment upon graduation.
There's another one where you DO get paid... says

see link

I wish I could get paid this way again
When I first started out all I had to do was type the document, open up the information and get my line count, so much easier, even a return was a line.  I had been able to keep it that way up until now where it is a 65 character line, with spaces at least though.  I think I would definitely make more money with just plain old straight lines.
You must have already paid, huh?
AHP is a huge rip-off and the complaints outweigh the praises.
You paid for this?
David, I hope you're not saying that you PAID for a course wherein the teachers or moderators do not reply to your questions by email.

It might be time to go further up the food chain at that school.
Not getting paid well at first?
If you choose the right school, you won't have to be in the position of "probably not gettin paid well at first." You won't have to "work your way up," either.

Doesn't it make more sense to choose a reputable school with a history of placing students directly into decent jobs at regular pay rates?

Going with a crummy school because it's cheaper . . . or being blinded because it's more expensive . . . makes no sense. If you can't work at all, or you have to take a job at low pay just to get your foot in the door, you've wasted your time in the program and you are continuing to waste it.

I don't know what to think about people who encourage others to do the same.

For the life of me, I cannot figure out why students continue to ask about and enroll in these horrible "schools." Isn't the massive amount of negative information about them enough to steer you away?

I think getting paid by the minute might be better because

lots of times you get the docs who will carry on a conversation in the middle of the dictation, or who will lay the phone down to thumb through the chart, though I have no personal experience with being paid this way.

Man you got ripped if you paid that much to get an
AA degree.  Shouldn't have cost you more than $2,000.00 and even though is a stretch.
I am not a paid affiliate
and have never benefited from the school except a good education and a great job that I got right after graduation. Yes, CS prepared me well!!!
get paid hourly
best bet is get a job locally that pays hourly. you make more money that way. in 1976, i made $9/hr. now i make $17/hr. when i edit, i make $23/hr (boston)
What a crock. Are you being paid to
push those two schools? Go ask experienced MTs on the main board which schools they went to.
If I get paid 7 cents per 65-Character.....
by electonic character count, do you think that would be with spaces or without?

Anyone? Not sure!

Thanks!!
Is Multispecialty Clinic paid the same?

Or is it less? I've done H&P, Consultation, and Discharge Summaries. Just no Op notes.

Thanks for  you help.

Honey, if you expect to be PAID to do this job, you still
There is no way to confuse H&P with HNP.

good luck getting paid
I work there and twice they shorted my pay and my check didn't even come this time. They don't have direct deposit, just one very hateful payroll clerk who acts like it just kills her to answer a question.
Better paid healthcare position to MT here...big adjustment, but it's...

entirely worth it.  The lower pay (at least for a while) versus the stress you feel as an RN - only you can decide, but in the long run I'll go with MT any day.

Also, if I were you, I would go with M-Tec rather than CS.  It is a much more comprehensive program, and you will be much more prepared.  Yes, it is a bit more expensive, but you will have many, many job offers when you graduate and can pick what suits you best.

I paid medical insurance claims
for about 17 years, so while this did help me tremendously with the terminology, etc., I don't think there is any way you can do this without the proper training. I knew a lot about the medical field, but it still doesn't compare to what you learn when schooling to be an MT
School gets paid for intern work
I now know they are paid for each report I do, supposedly to help cover the cost of "interning" students. The client company benefits by having reports already proofed that do not have to go through their QA and the school gets paid. I have started sending out resumes and taking online tests. Hopefully, I will get a paying position soon.
That's a first for me. I've never heard of an IC being paid hourly.
I wonder if that breaks any laws about ICs? I'm not an expert at all on IC laws, but I wouldn't be surprised if being paid hourly doesn't make you an employee. You might want to post that question in the subject line on the main board.
I have been paid by the dictation minute, I prefer it ...
for the reasons you mentioned. On a couple of occasions, the recording "continued" for about 15 to 20 minutes after the dictation was done, and because I had to continue to listen, I got PAID for those minutes!
Are interns paid for the work they do? (see inside)
I see there is a fee for this program. If one has to pay a fee, and do work without pay, it doesn't sound like such a great deal for the newbie.
