Keep sending out resumes via internet and locally -

There is nothing that can make up for your lack of experience. You can just hope someone decides to give you a chance. However, where I work we would rather hire someone right out of school who has gone to one of the Big Three than someone from another school with years of transcribing under their belt. Good luck to you.

Just keep sending in resumes.

I am still a student and was able to get a job.  I do acute care, mainly OP notes.  I applied everywhere.  I was finally hired at a very low rate and I worked for a few months for the experience, then I quit because of nonpayment...  Grrrr.  .    So I started sending out resumes again.  This time, I had added acute care (OP notes) to my resume and got several calls.  I found a good job as a part-time IC.  It worked out in the end.  Just keep sending in your resume.  I also send a cover letter with mine.

Good luck!!

I just kept sending in resumes
I am still a student but I was offered a job working from home doing OP notes.  I sent in my resume to several companies posted on the jobs board, along with a cover letter.   I tested with a few places, passed, and found a good fit for me.  I even turned down a few.  So, jobs are out there.  Keep sending in your resume with a cover letter and keep on trying.    Good luck!!
You might, but better off locally.
I started with a terminology course and a transcription course from the local community college. I got my first job 2 months before I finished the classes, but it was overflow work from a local doctor's office. I don't think many nationals will hire before graduation unless you're in a few certain schools.

Take whatever work you can get, because the experience will help you land your next job. And test with whatever companies will let you.

Good luck to you!
Should probably try to apprentice locally if you're in need of fast
s
Try sending again.
Have you received anything from either of us?
Hunt locally, make cold calls to local MTSOs, you can get a job that way-
I also landed a job on-line with no experience with PHNS, www.phns.com, they are a twin of Medquist though, I believe they are owned by them but am not sure, rumor, so who knows. Rules and pay stink, but GREAT for experience, when I tested for them years ago it was a joke (easist test I ever took). I still have a little ways to go (1 more year) before I can command better pay than I have now, but working on that. Just keep trying, took me 2 months to land 1 job and then 2 more landed in my lap. You have to be persistant.
Sending out prayers that every New MT finds a nice job!

Method of sending/receiving dictation: DEP

What does DEP stand for?

Thanks

Sent out 10 resumes
I started in the file room of a 6 doctor urology office 16 years ago and went from there. The only formal training I received was 2 semesters of medical terminology. The rest was learned on the job. The best thing, in my opinion, is to get into a doctor's office and get some experience that way. If nothing else, it will give you experience, which is what all the nationals require. Good luck to you.
I looked at about 500 resumes

I looked at about 500 resumes from MTs we've employed lately.  Just a small number come from M-Tec, Andrews or Career Step- about a half dozen.  I didn't do anything scientific.  I was just curious.

There seems to be an impression that these 3 schools are the only way to get educated in this field and get a job.

Our records don't bear this out.  Most of our MTs come from Community Colleges (I call them Junior Colleges) and have a 2 yr degree.  Our MTs come from all over the country too.  From what I've seen, their curriculum is heavily slanted toward HPI which is an old stand by.

So that info is for all the graduates from other schools who may be fearful because of what is written here.  AND again, I'll say that we don't hire any newbies without a short internship, but we pay well so we can be picky.

For what it is worth.........

Send in resumes and test everywhere that will allow it.
I applied to several places while I was a student, and some places will allow you to test even though they say they require 2 years experience.  Some will waive the 2 year experience requirement if you have graduated from a medical transcription training program.  I found a job at home while in school, so it's not impossible but it does take some time.  Good luck!
Ok..I sen tout 10 resumes Saturday

I sent out 10 resumes on Saturday to local specialty Doctors as well as several Chiropractors.  I was wondering if any of you work from home or are based at the office of a Chiropractor?  I love this type of dictation as well as the idea of being in a smaller practice.  I know I can't be picky, but where did you all start out as being a new graduate and did any of you graduate from a Technical College?  I received my certificate from our local tech school and am working on my Associate Degree as I stated in my last post.  Also, what is considered "experience" in this line of work?  How can I get experience if noone will hire me?  SOrry for all of the questions.  Thanks for helping!!

There are companies that will hire from the resumes and do
not post ads, so posting resume if your best bet for an at-home position.   You have to be careful though as there are some companies who are not honest companies so come here and ask or research the company board.   It should be much easier for you having graduated from M-Tec.
I heard that were going review resumes after the New year.
x
Post your resume on all the various job boards, send resumes to
local clinics/doctor's offices, apply to local hospitals.   As a newbie getting a job is hard, but some companies will hire you based on the school you got your certificate from.  Some schools are better than others and if you didn't get your certificate from one of the better ones changes are harder of getting a job.   Most likely you'll need to work in-house for a while.  There are some companies that will offer you a job, many at low to no pay, and there are a few companies that are not legit, so be sure you investigate before accepting.  If you have to fork out any money for equipment or software in order to get the job be cautious, especially if they require you to purchase it from them.
DSL, what is this in regards to the internet?
???
Internet satellite
Does anyone know any companies that hire MTs with internet satellite? I will be graduating in about a month from MTEC, and DSL is not available in my area. Thanks.
Internet connections
What exactly is the difference between broadband and other types?  Do you have to purchase a card for the laptop to have this?  I am very ignorant when it comes to different types of connections and what would be the best for me.  My home computer is wireless, but they say it is not cable or DSL, just wireless.  I hope that it is acceptable to the company.  Any info on Internet connections would be greatly appreciated.
Looked it up on the old internet......
Yep! It's a term.
Search the boards and send out resumes, and review your grammar and punctuation
s
from Michigan, but looking for work over the internet.nm
.
Do an extensive search on the internet... (sm)
and also locally, and test with everyone that allows you to. A lot of companies say they will not hire newbies but some are willing to waive the experience requirement if you test well. Good luck to you!
Secure internet access.....
It's hard to know if you really have secure internet access at open places such as an airport, etc., but someone would have to really know what they are doing to access your computer while you're working. They would rather be stealing your identity than reports. Hotels will usually give you a password to log onto their network, but again, the same situation.
satellite internet provider for at-home?
Anyone out there go to the Andrews and Holbrook school? Comments?
You don't need a dictionary if you have internet access (see inside)
just use www.onelook.com it has all you could ask for in a dictionary, has a search function, and is much easier than lifting a heavy book!
Questions about schools and internet connections...
Hi,
I am new to this website and to the MT world and have a few questions, mostly pertaining to my future school choice.
First off, I have heard that M-Tec, Andrews and Career Step are the 'top 3' online MT schools.
I have been very interested in M-Tec and have heard a lot of good about them, but I would like to know if anyone (who has gone to them) thinks they are overrated or too pricey. I have also heard from someone who is a CMT that Career Step is the way to go, but I've heard a lot of negatives about them and the course is much shorter. Do you really need the 1000+ hours that M-Tec offers or is the 600+ hours sufficient? This is all very new to me and I don't want to make a bad choice picking a school and waste time and money and end up not being able to get hired.
I also wondered if there is any hope of working as an MT if you can only get dial up internet. The area we are possibly moving to, is in the country and DSL and cable are not offered there at this time.
Last question, I have heard that the people graduating from these 'top 3' and getting work right out of school, are the students graduating with high honors. How hard is it to graduate with high honors and what are the chances of doing so? And, is there even a chance at getting work for those that don't get honors? I'm sorry I've asked so much, I'm just afraid of making a mistake! Thank you all in advance!
Any good internet based companys to work for at all?

hello everyone,

I am a newbie...after reading these boards, I am left with the question... are there any good internet based trascription companies to work for?

and, if not, who is the lesser of the evils? i know each company has good and bad aspects, but does anyone work for or know of a company that they are happy with?

...or do i need to look for MT jobs in house?

agree. Much quicker for me to research the internet than take the time..
to stock a library of books that takes me more time to look through than finding some very dependable websites and bookmarking them in your favorites. I certainly don't miss the days when when you had to constantly update your medical library before the internet age. All new MTs should be very grateful for the wonderful resources available on the internet, as they save a lot of research time.
Not personally, but hundreds have and have been complaining on the internet for years.
It's not a good school, they don't teach you enough for you to get a job, and the companies know it. They will not hire "grads" of Allied School. If you don't want to believe that, hey, it's your money.
it is a type of internet connection faster than dialup but still uses a phone line
but you can use your phone and be online at the same time.
