Quick Look
I like Quick Look because of the extra info in the back, i.e. drug listings grouped by diseases, etc.  The only thing I don't like about Quick Look is that if you look up a brand name drug it refers you to the listing under the generic name.  So if you are looking for info other than just the spelling, such as doses, usage, etc. you are  actually having to look it up twice.

Quick, helpful advice for new MTs
While I'm thinking about it, I just wanted to post this tip really quickly.

One of the ways I REALLY helped myself when I first started in transcription was to hang out on word help boards (like the one here). When a question came up, I would research it and answer if I could find the correct word. This not only helped the people who asked the question, but it super duper hugely helped me learn what words actually sound like when a doctor says them, and what certain things were and/or did.

Now I go to the word board mostly to help, but I'm still amazed at how much I learn 12+ years into the business.
I have the right person and you are too quick to reply to posts. A professional
You don't see the big guns worrying about anything posted on this board. Sheesh.
The new Quick Look Drug Book and the Saunders Pharm Words come
d
Quick Look Drug Book great for this as it has conditions/diagnoses in back with meds
s
The answer is....
myocardial ischemia
no one here would know the answer to that
Are you talking about looking at the character count in MS-Word or by some line counter you got or the company got? MS-Word gives you a character count with spaces and a count without spaces.
No, of course you don't have an answer for that - sm
because there isn't one.

Check on Google.Com they have many links to the company you are looking for.

Didn't like my answer?
Didn't like my tone? That's just too damn bad. Get over it. I told you the truth. If you don't want to heed the truth, that's your problem, not mine.
Answer to your concerns

Why don't you call Linda and discuss your concerns with her?  I'm sure she can put them into perspective better than I can, but I'll share that you won't need to use that website in your studies.  Nor do you need to participate in any social activity whatsoever.   In fact, should you wish to be completely invisible to all the other students, you won't have any problem doing so.

My cyber-office masquerades as a pub, but I won't be teaching you, so you don't have to go there.  Even if I was teaching you, you wouldn't have to go there!  Many of my students interact with me only by email.

Yes, our board is private.  That is because our students voted to have a private board and because the school administration feels that a private board is best for everyone.   That way, you can speak and participate freely, or not, without worrying about it coming back to haunt you some day.

What's most important is that you choose the school that makes you feel the most "at home."   You need to be comfortable and happy, and you need to feel that the school meets your needs as far as is possible.   We want you to select the school that you feel is "your" school, and if it's not us, that's ok.

Wrong answer!!
This means they are interested enough that they would recommend me to apply at their sister company. They WANT to interview me. Got the call today.
A newbie answer

I have been doing this job part time for 6 months now and absolutely love it. I am looking forward to the day when I can do this full time.  To answer your questions:

1.  There is no reason nor excuse to attach a resume when your prospective employer says to paste it.  When I applied I made sure I read everything and did everything that was asked.... because I wanted the job.

2.  There is no reason nor excuse to apply for a job where you do not have or are not willing to buy the equipment needed to do the job.  I made sure my software and foot pedal were compatible.  If a high speed internet connection is required, and you don't have one, then you can't do the job.

3.  When I applied for positions, I checked, checked and recheched my spelling and grammar to show that I did have a grasp of the English language... because I wanted the job.

4.  I did get the job, and now I rely heavily on the QA corrections that I receive.  I pull my reports to see the errors before I start my shift so I won't do the same mistakes again.  I want to learn the words and phrases of difficult docs, get the account specifics down, and improve my accuracy... because I want to KEEP my job.

This is just good business common sense.  I think feathers were ruffled because of the tone of the post, not the content, although I can certainly understand her frustration.  A MTSO owes a newbie nothing.  A newbie must prove themselves able to do the job, and a good first impression is a big step in doing that.

Just my take on it.

A practical answer for you.
The best place to train is:
1. Any school where nearly all students graduate,
2. Where nearly all of those graduating pass employment tests with nationals and are hired,
3. Doing well in them right away, getting up to speed quickly,
4. And where the school will continue working with you at no extra charge until you have the skills you need.

That's what you need to ask those schools. Only one or two will be able to answer these questions in a satisfactory manner.

The whole point behind getting training is, after all, GETTING A JOB.

Correct answer - only cap if.....sm

only cap medical Transcriptionist if it is a company name....I am an MTSO with my first name and surname coming before, i.e.,  [My Name Here] Medical Transcription Service

To answer your questions
I'm an IC and was given the IC Manual which does not refer at all to any reviews, raises, etc.  I do cardiology and can produce about 175 lines an hour, sometimes more, sometimes less, depending on the doctor.  Since I'm an at-home IC, I have no one else to compare my work to, that's kind of why I started looking around to see what I could find out.  Since my one year anniversary is right around the corner, I figured that would be the time to approach the subject but I wanted to have an idea of what I should be looking for!
Since no one has given you a direct answer I will - sm
500 lines as a newbie will probably take you at least 5 hours, maybe more, maybe less depending how easy/hard the dictators are, how fast you type, how much you have to look up, etc. The norm is 150 lines an hour, but as a newbie it is unlikely you will reach that. After six years I still only do 140-170 lines an hour with my expander, though I am not a super fast typist (60 WPM). So there are a lot of factors to figure in, but as a newbie 500 a day is not too bad to do and very doable. Good luck.
answer - split

Instead of the traditional straight keyboard, they have a keyboard that is split down the middle so your hands can be at a more natural angle.  Its called an ergonomic keyboard.  I LOVE mine.

If you go to this URL you will find the exact keyboard that I use.

http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/mouseandkeyboard/productdetails.aspx?pid=043

I have been looking into this as well, can you answer some of my questions?
When you say a secure internet access, is that any different than being in a hotel that offers free high speed internet? What precautions or questions should I ask before I plug my system into something like that.

The majority of the time I will be using it is when my kids would like to play outside and I can be able to work from the deck of porch. However, we would like to take vacations where I could have access to typing if I needed to, such as a STAT file.

Thank you for any answers you give.
Answer to Intership

Has anyone heard back from "Jen" regarding the internship that her company is offering? If so, please email me with your thoughts and opinions of the offer.

Thanks!

Well, why ask if you didn't want the answer.
You asked why anyone would get into the industry now. Why ask the question if you didn't want to hear the answer. We weren't necessarily defending our jobs, but explaining why we do it. We make more than working at Wal-Mart and are much happier at home doing MT. If you were just trying to make a point, then just spit it out instead of asking questions you really don't want the answers too.

I agree about the post above, but many of us come to this field with our eyes wide open. I knew what to expect. I knew I would have to work hard to get where I needed to be financially and I have far exceeded my expectations. For some of us, MT does pay and pays well, better than any of the other jobs available in my small town.
OSI pretty quick, MediVoxx pretty strange
I've applied to both. For OSI, I scored a few points too low to start, but was invited to retest in six months. For MediVoxx, it took about a week for them to get back with me and let me know I tested well. That led to several other things (confidentiality agreement, their company info, a personal telephone interview with an offer to test for QA after I downloaded software from their site). There was a seven digit code to actually activate that software to enable me to test for QA, which would be the final step in the pre-employment process. But, they never gave me that code and did not respond to any emails about it. It was if - POOF - they were gone!

I don't know what that was all about, maybe a recruiter problem and not a company problem. MediVoxx seems like a really nice and well put together company otherwise.

No one I've ever tested with otherwise took near as long to respond, though.

Good luck to you. You will find something. Don't give up.

Two people may be composing an answer
at the same time, and they have no idea somebody else hit the "post reply" button before they did.
You got an answer to the question you asked
There is no need to become retroactively indignant. You wanted to claim experience for your schoolwork. You were informed that that would be inappropriate. Now you know.
lol It wasn't for this case...the 1st answer was there

Thanks for taking time to answer.

Too many variables involved to answer
that question.  You shouldn't compare anyway.
Having instructers answer questions quickly is a BIG plus.

Since when is asking for an answer on a test considered using a resource?
It's cheating, plain and simple. Are you the same Jenn who is having trouble with the Princeton test? If so, no wonder you disagree with what "resources" are.
You still skirted the issue. Please answer the questions so you may have more newbies. Otherwise,
??
Ooops! Nevermind So. I found the answer from the posts below. Thanks. :-)

MTSO?
Please excuse my ignorance, but what is MTSO? (obviously, I'm a newbie)
MTSO

Forgive me for being so ignorant of the abbreviations, but what does MTSO stand for?

Thanks.

MTSO
I know what it stands for.  I've read the posts about MTSO's. But I can't find a straight forward answer. I've read that for newbies, a good bet for getting a job is with/thru an MTSO.  I've googled it but no good info pops up. Where in the world do I find an MTSO?
So who is your MTSO
I have a friend that went to Allied, having trouble now finding work. Who is your MTSO??
There used to be a lot of $$ in being an MTSO, not

anymore.  When you are competing with single-digit line rates from off-shore companies you can no longer charge 18 cpl.  In most cases it isn't corporate greed, but trying to be stay afloat.  Medical expenses are through the roof and everyone is looking for a way to cut expenses and MT is one of them.

I agree that companies that went offshore long ago did it for greed, but now it is mostly for survival.

People go into this business lured by working at home and making $40,000/year.  They don't investigate to see how realistic that is.  They go to one of the cheaper schools because the better schools are too expensive, yet the cheaper schools are pretty worthless and don't equip you to work as an MT in the real world.   If potential MTs would do their research on the front-end they wouldn't go into this field to start with.

Meaning of MTSO

Could someone tell me what MTSO stands for?  May be a dumb question, but I wont know if I don't ask.

Thanks

hate to tell you but yes I most certainly am an MTSO
as attested to by my corporate annual report to the Secretary of State, my notice of acceptance of an S-corporation by the Internal Revenue Service, my certificates of shares of the corporation, my quarterly payments to the Department of  Employment Security for my employees and my portofolio in a corporate 401K. The OP said "sensitive information" which would hardly constitute your name and address which people even write down on blank pieces of paper at the supermarket to try to win a Caribbean cruise at the supermarket. And if I were you, little Miss Cop of the Internet, I would keep my fancy little fingers off this board. According to your own logic, how easy would it be for a hacker to get ahold of YOUR IP address and start stalking YOU down? The OP probably even has a site on MySpace for cryin' out loud. So go ahead and dispense your advice, i.e. panic, via the MTSTARS board. I'm sure that since you found this site it makes you an expert in all matters. LOL.
MTSO - What are you afraid of?
,
As an MTSO owner.....
I will just let you know that in response to an add I ran for 2 MT positions, I received 50+ very good, qualified MT resumes...that is why no one will hire a newbie! I actually have 3 newbies that I am working with now on a small clinic account that I have. I will not put a newbie on an acute care facility due to the amount of QA that goes into that, but I will start them on my small clinic note facility to begin with and let them work up to the QA. That is my position on this subject...there are too few jobs for too many qualified experienced MTs out there, and there is a deficiency of work due to Nationals outsourcing work overseas..that's that, IMHO.
Bet MTSO is tickled, also, to get an MT for 5 cpl.
x
Can somebody tell me how to find an MTSO?
I've tried google, but MTSO seems to be a common acronym for lots of things. Is there some key term I could search for that would point me toward potentially hiring MTSOs?

Thanks.
National MTSO
I really have no experience with a national MTSO, but I think it depends on where the MTSO is based. So, if the MTSO is based in the US, you would be paid dollars, and if it is based in the UK, you might be paid in EURO, and so forth and so on. However, while checking around on the net, I found a company based in the Philippines. You might want to check them out, the web address is, www.peoplesupport.com. I don't know what their money would translte to US currency, but it may be easier for you.
how to find an MTSO
Thanks.  I know what MTSO stands for but I was having a hard time finding an MTSO in my area. I have noticed a lot of people say that a newbie is better off working for an MTSO to gain experience. But when I search for MTSO I get nothing. If anyone reading this works for or has worked for an MTSO, can you please tell me how you found them. Any info would be helpful. Thanks.
I got my own accounts & started an MTSO.
nm
After some experience working for another MTSO...
I registered a dba with my city, marketed like crazy, and got my own accounts and my own subs working for me.

Besides a great MT education, the thing that has helped the most is having a Stanford MBA business consultant in my corner. I couldn't have done this so quickly without his advice and coaching. Luckily, he works cheap since he's my SO!
You didn't say if you are an MTSO or IC or employee or what. (nm)
