This all sounds nice, but newbies have to choose MTSOs wisely and this one is not a wise choice.

wise choice
xx
Sounds like they made a poor choice of EMR...sm

the whole point of EMR is not to type the notes into the system - it's to choose from a menu and point and click to get the information in.  Think

chief complaint:  sore throat.     choose:  erythematous   edematous  purulent drainage and so on

if it's a speciality with a lot of redundancy, i.e. podiatry, they fly through their notes. If it's more unique situations a little tougher. But don't worry... the EMR companies will soon figure out the missing link...

MTSOs are sometimes more willing to hire newbies.
It could be a good way to get experience and sometimes better than a national.
"hiring MTSOs" would mean MTSOs that are currently hiring peope. n/m

Do you have any education MT-wise? . . .
It you have some MT schooling, you have a better chance.  However, if you simply think you can work as an MT because you type well, that's a different story.  There is so much more to medical transcription than just typing (transcribing).  You need to know medical terminology, formating and more.
Seems like a wise plan. sm
only problem is it might be hard to get a PT job as a newbie. Mostly it seems like newbies get jobs with nationals if they can possibly test well enough but the nationals have a set number of lines you have to meet every pay period and as a newbie it can be difficult to get your speed up, since you will be researching a lot of terms and re-listening, etc. You MIGHT be able to find a job with a smaller MTSO, but then again maybe not. What would you do if you didn't find a MT job that fit your hours?
You can, but it isn't honored by anyone but you and using it is not wise
Most employers, all that I know in fact, will toss your resume in the trash without considering you if you play a trick like that. That is not something that is done in this industry and it isn't acceptable to do it. It's deceitful. Dishonest? Only if you claim that it is a professionally recognized certificaton or credential, which it isn't.
Employers don't check references? Not very wise of them
We're dealing with confidential work. You're telling me that there are still MT employers who don't care enough about the quality and accountability of the work that they would "bother" to check references? You are going to put confidential patient records in the hands of people with no attempt to even see if they are who and what they say they are? No educational references checked? No past employment checked?
Not a list of MTSOs
just a list of transcriptionists. You can add yourself to the list at no charge. Just fill out the form.
From an MTSOs persective

From an MTSO's perspective -- I own a small MT company and have hired 3 of the AIM Program grads and have been VERY pleased with all three.  I would highly recommend this program and I will continue to approach the director when I am in need of additional MTs.

To clear up any misconceptions -- the AIM Program is no longer affiliated with Allstate Transcription.  The AIM Program was merely started/created by a former owner of Allstate Transcription.  Allstate Transcription is no longer in business -- and from what I understand, Superior Global Solutions acquired Allstate Transcription back in November.  (If you notice, Allstate no longer has the "now hiring" banners on their website -- and they have nothing on their site or on the AIM Program site that affiliates the two of them.  I believe their site is going to be disabled soon.)

So....not sure how much I would worry about posts about Allstate Transcription when making my decision the AIM Program.  Again, I've had nothing but positive experiences with their interns.  Furthermore, the mentors and director -- both the former and the present ones -- have been nothing but professional.  I've never heard any of the MTs I've hired through AIM Program referrals have anything but good things to say about them.

You are welcome to email me if you have any specific questions.

Fix your resume to fit the MTSOs requirement
i.e., cardiology, acute care, etc.  If they need someone with acute care for 5 years - then put it on your resume!
This is a huge list of MTSOs.

This list is huge.  A lot of these seem to be small businesses.  I only looked at one state, but the list was long.  Not many have websites, but some of these businesses are still doing tapes and offering a wide range of services.  You will therefore want to look mainly in your own State.

If they can only receive resumes by mail or fax they are not getting swamped with them, so you might have a better chance.  .  Happy hunting!

Hunt locally, make cold calls to local MTSOs, you can get a job that way-
I also landed a job on-line with no experience with PHNS, www.phns.com, they are a twin of Medquist though, I believe they are owned by them but am not sure, rumor, so who knows. Rules and pay stink, but GREAT for experience, when I tested for them years ago it was a joke (easist test I ever took). I still have a little ways to go (1 more year) before I can command better pay than I have now, but working on that. Just keep trying, took me 2 months to land 1 job and then 2 more landed in my lap. You have to be persistant.
something you like! seriously, MT is a terrible choice
for a full time job; much too isolating and much too hard on the neck, back and fingers to do 40 or 40+ hour week. Even if you work Wed and Sat at the flower shop, you will be better off in the long run.
School choice
I feel school choice is important. The problem with some of the educational clearinghouse schools is that they teach using the Hillcrest and Forrest tapes and they are just too easy.

I don't feel it is helpful to slam every school except 2 or 3. I went to MT Advantage Career Center and had a job before graduating. However, I would not slam other schools.

I can understand posting that you feel a particular program is subpar and then backing up your opinion with why you feel that way, but there seem to be a few people here that post nasty and negative posts everytime a school is brought up that isn't one they particularly like.
Trying to make the right choice

I have spent months reading and learning about becoming an MT and I am still left with questions that I hope maybe a broader range of people might be able to answer (you all

Is Career Step's program the same as what's offered at M-Tec? The price is clearly not and I have spoken with enrollment at both locations and asked them directly the cost differences but normal everyday people who do the job is who's opinions I'd like most.

1. Training (are the both relatively close in what they teach)

2. Certificate vs. diploma

3. 4 months for one program vs. 9-12 for another.

Any honest, none school bashing, opinions would be very gratefully appreciated.

I really think I made the wrong choice
All I keep hearing about is how hard it is to land a job in this profession. No one wants to go to school and then find out there are no jobs available. I have almost given up on finishing my school for fear of there being nothing at the end of the rainbow for me. I was naive in thinking that I could just work from home immediately and have no cares in the world. Oh well, live and learn - right? I guess I better just go back to college and get a degree in something else.
Andrews is an excellent choice, sm
but I have no experience with them to give you advice! You may try asking Linda Andrews to put you in touch with some current students (contact info on the Andrews School website) ***Edited by Moderator*** Good luck to your daughter!
lol nice one

Well isn't that nice.
XOXOXOXOXO
At least someone is trying to be nice and help
..
That was really nice of you (see msg)
I'm sure it will help tons of people. Saving Keystrokes is a tad expensive but I've heard nothing but wonderful praises about it. I am seriously considering buying it.

The ABCZ method is quite popular but I haven't settled down and changed my IT entries yet (too much overtime at the moment). Thanks for the post!
Nice.
.
How did you make your school choice decision?
Why did you pick the particular schools that you chose? Did you ask them for help in job placement? What do the employers tell you when you test for them, or do they even allow you to test? I know that several schools' graduates are not having any problems like this at all, and they don't cost $10,000. Not even Andrews costs $10,000.
Career Step is a good choice for some
nm
some people....not nice!
I would try in-house to get some experience.

If you have to work at home then try doctor offices that have 1 or 2 docs. They might be more willing to hire someone without experience.
Why did you choose that course?
Did you do any research on transcription schools? I took on a graduate of AHP, and she didn't know 1/3 of what she needed to know just to do radiology, which is an easy specialty.

why did i choose this course

This is a complete career change for me.  I was a mortgage broker for ten years, had three years of typesetting experience for a newspaper when I was young and decided it would be a good idea.  Why this course - just because you had one bad experience doesn't mean the course isn't a decent course.  Maybe the person was one that skimmed by on the seat of thier pants?  Who knows? I've found a couple of people already that took the same course and have jobs.   So I believe a lot of it has to do with your resume, wherr you post it, and what you did before school.  I managed a mortgage brokerage firm and worked my way from the bottom to the top.  I think I am capable of doing this.  - if i can't find a job I'll just kill myself - NOT.  But I can tell you this I have more constructive things to do with my life then to go around bashing other people and their choices.

Great choice for work-at-home jobs
I'm a physical therapist and an MT as well, not bad for a part-time job, plus you have to stay at home; although you are not going to earn as much as you do as RN. Working indirectly with the patient is as exciting as working directly with them. Good Luck!!
Opppsss..Nice spelling,huh? lol...
I am interested in joining the group. Please let me know how to join.

Thank you!

Oh yeah, that's real nice
You ought to be ashamed of yourself to say that you are helping people when you are dangling a position in her face, and then have enough nerve to rant about it.  Everyone has a different situation.  So, she says she is Mom first, aren't we all?  Geez....  You people are amazing.  Lisa, I commend you, for standing up for yourself.  You'll make it in this business because it does take assertiveness whether it be now or in the future.  Do not think for one minute there are not people in this field choosing their own hours so they can be mothers plus have an income.  God bless, good luck, and take care of your children and your business as they only have one mother, but there are plenty of jobs out there for the taking.
It would be nice if there were current info
in the archives. I just joined them. I've asked on this forum myself about SGS and got no better answer. For the most part thus far, they seem basically okay, though not so quick to respond to questions/concerns.
i would choose another fied.
you won't have a career in this one. it is phasing out fast.

i seriously doubt in 5 years you will have much of a job, let alone a career.

go to school for something else.
many schools to choose from
from reading other messages.. PCDI is a 'no' Penn Foster.. is inexpensive.. but.. is it good???
I can't afford to go, nor is my credit score high enough for SLM.

Trying to choose a school
Hi,

I have been trying to decide on an MT school, and I am so unsure as to what I should do. What things should I be looking for in a school? Has anyone ever heard about the online programs at Brighton College, or Blackstone College? Are they any good? I want a school that will provide lots of practice dictations, what is a reasonable number of practice hours to expect? Any other input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

~Bea
Which school should I choose? Is this right for me?

Hi all!  I've been researching this profession and would really appreciate some input from 'those in the know'!

I need to be at home with my family (long story), but my children (all 3 of 'em) are getting older and I'm in need of some 'mental stimulation'!  I would like to find something that will hold my interest, keep my thinking, and requires constant learning (I like that!).  I saw an article in our local paper a few months back about med trans, and it really sparked my interest!  I had no idea about this profession before, but it seems like it could be my cup-o-tea.

I'm an accounting clerk by profession (if that makes any difference), so that would probably come in handy if I become an IC.  Also, I've had a great deal of training with voice recognition (Dragon Speak), which I think could be of an advantage to me as I have an idea of how these program behave (and misbehave!).  Also, since I was a child, my preferred reading has been medical books (....weird kid!).

I'd probably prefer something part time, and I'm not in it for 'the big bucks'!  My husband has a great job and that has allowed me to stay home, but I would find it fulfilling to make some kind of financial contribution to my family.

To make a long story long.....I'm looking at a Canadian online school called CanScribe  (I'm Canadian, by the way!).  They seem to be very legit, with a good reputation and are recognized by the AAMT.  They are kind of expensive, but it seems to me that the good ones are!  I'll be receiving a 'settlement' soon, and I think investing in my education is always a good bet!  However, I don't want to be foolish with my investment, and would like some input, like I said, from 'those in the know'!

Good day to you all, and thanks so much!!  Margaret

She is right - choose another profession

I too have been an MT for almost 20 years.  These MTs schools will train you to become an excellent MT and they will be glad to take your money too.  Then you are a highly trained and skilled MT.  If there are no jobs, what do you do with it?  It's useless.

Because of EMR and all the outsourcing that has increased since January 1 - you have old MTs with 10, 15, 20 years of experience out job searching again because they have so many years in and  they do not want to change professions before retirement.  It is so competitive that MTs with 2, 3, 5 years experience will not be able to move in their jobs.  A brand new MT is not going to stand a chance.  Don't waste your time and money.

Choose the best school... sm
You have experience in general transcription, but that's not the same as experience in MEDICAL transcription... Unless, of course, you typed a lot of brain surgeries and cardiac caths for the police department. *winks*

Right now for a newbie, competition is absolutely fierce for landing that first job. Don't cut corners on your education. Your 'experience' in general transcription will NOT open any doors for you, but completing an MT course from Andrews or MTEC will.
LPN to MT here. The pay drop will be a shocker, but it's nice to work
m
Sending out prayers that every New MT finds a nice job!

So thank you for saying Spheris employees are bumbling. That was nice.
Perhaps the green eyed monster is the one who can't stand the idea of anyone being successful in this field any way OTHER than the Mighty Big Three.
Choose either CareerStep, M-TEC, or Andrews...all 3
I know. I accept grads from Career Step!

Choose a good school!
M-TEC or Andrews. Then follow their program to the letter!!! Best of luck!
If you choose your school solely because it is cheap
you will get a cheap education and pay for it over and over and over again in lost income. Many people who have chosen the crappy schools end up having to be retrained by one of the good schools before anyone will hire them. Just something to think about. It has ever been true that you get what you pay for. And don't let anyone snow you with that old lie "You get out of it what you put into it. Just work really hard and you'll get a good education." Not true with education. You can only get out of your training what is there to be gotten. If it is deficient, it doesn't matter how hard you work, your training will still be deficient. Get a part-time job to save money for one of the good schools, hold a yard sale, wait a few months while you save money, whatever, just don't waste your money and time on an inferior education.
newbie trying to choose a reputable school

Hello all,

I am trying to decide between the MT schools approved by AHDI.  Does anyone have any experience with M-Tec, ExactMed, and Andrews?  Any suggestions..thanks for the advice!

Why did you choose this post to voice your opinion?
It appears as if the OP was so happy about passing the test and receiving that phone call that she rushed to the computer to share her good news with the world. Would it have been so awful to just wish her luck and share her joy? I have been an MT for a year, and I still feel proud and happy each time I pass a test. It is hard for a newbie or someone with less than 2-3 years of experience to get a company to even let you test. When you then pass the test and get a phone call, that is veryexciting and makes you feel good. You could have wished her luck publicly and then sent her an email making her aware of her mistakes along with some tips. This New MTs forum is the last place on this board to post a message like yours.

Why can't some people just let others feel good about themselves?

Nice advice, however, learning good grammar usually falls somewhere
between grades 1-8 and, even more so, 9-12, if you are lucky enough to be exposed to good schools.  If they have not been the afforded the opportunity to attend a solid grade school, as well as a high school, with teachers who emphasize and demand the importance of correct grammar, they are going to be left behind when it comes to MTing, or have to take some English classes to catch up on what they missed during the early days of learning.
If you choose Andrews or M-TEC, you won't need a fast track or extra training.
You also will receive, with your course, many of the books that CS students purchase on their own - the Book of Style, the Language of Medicine, better grammar books.

I graduated from CS also. And if I had it to do again, I'd choose Andrews or M-TEC.
Whichever you choose, you might find one on www.half.com. Great spot for books! nm

Sure sounds the same
nm
Sounds like...
C-pak, seepak, zeepak. It's an antibiotic for airway disease. Currently taken with albuterol MDI. I've looked online and through my Saunders but I am stuck. It is probably embarrassingly simple but any suggestions would be appreciated.
