Still plentiful jobs in MT if you want to do it in-house. Lots of jobs
s
are there no more in-house hospital jobs left?
it seems to me that way too many of talented MT's are settling for these low-paying companies. Is that all that's left out there for work?
doesn't anybody work in a hospital anymore?
Definitely more jobs available to those that want to work in-house somewhere. Any services local

Still lots of in-house jobs on the big job search sites. The at-home US MT is going the way
s
what area are you from?
I live in California. I have been transcribing for 15+ years, and if someone local was looking for a mentor, I might consider. Maybe where you are at there is someone interested in QA'ing all your work. You could make some money to start but worth more than the money would be the training and experience.
Around my area
They post on their website and run ads in the local paper.  A lot of available jobs are found by word of mouth.  I would just apply to a bunch of facilities in your area whether they have posted anything or not.
I am also in the Dallas area (sm)
and am fairly new to transcription. I do have some experience. I have sent out tons of resumes and letters to companies, doctors, etc. and have not found anything. I have had a couple companies tell me they would give me a chance, but then I never heard from them again. I am not giving up though, I am very confident that I will find something eventually, and I know that I can do the work.
Are there any technical schools in the area?
Some colleges offer medical transcription.  That would be her best bet.  Get in the school (on-site), and then most will place her for a first-time job probably at a local hospital.  Good luck to your friend.  I'm not so sure these online courses meet the expectations once you've graduated.  It can be overwhelming.  There are companies out there hiring new graduates, but I just think the on-site instruction is so helpful.
Training in the Atlanta area

Hi.  I wanted to let you know about a training program in the Metro Atlanta area.  We are a full service transcription company.  We also offer a training program that we feel is unique.  Our program consists of the normal training that you would find at other companies - medical terminology, anatomy, laboratory data testing, etc.  What we feel is unique is our mentoring program/dictation training.  Our trainees work on the same type of work that they would be doing if we were able to offer them a job.  Each trainee comes in office 2 to 3 times a week and works on dictation.  After each transcript is completed, a mentor/trainer then goes over the chart line per line with them correcting each mistake.  Because of our system, we are able to offer approximately 90% of our trainees a job once they reach 98% accuracy.  We found with some of the other training programs, the dictations that Transcriptionist were being trained on were not "real" and we were basically having to re-train them completely.  Since we are in the metro Atlanta area, we only offer training to people in this area.

Please let us know if you have any questions.

check to see if there is a wireless tower in your area...sm
you will have to do some searching as they don't contact you-- you have to contact them-- but a year ago I found there was a wireless tower about 1 mile from my house. DLS for Direct Line of Sight (NOT DSL!) and sends a wireless signal to a antenna on my roof. Very fast connections and reasonably priced (I paid $300 to install and $45/month). Ask neighbors, etc. and watch for those funky dish-looking things on people's roofs - all pointed in the same direction. I found mine because my sister switched - and then found them on the internet. Perhaps something like "wireless internet service providers [your town])?
Don't forget radiology offices in your area.
Never know when they might need some part-time help. Or chiropractic offices. You might do other jobs as well, but variety isn't all bad.
Have you tried local clinics or small MTSO's in your area?
That's how I got my first break. Good luck.
try to stick to ACUTE care. You don't want to find yourself 'stuck' in one area.

You were "blessed to find a private company" in your area. Most people are not so blessed.
And most companies will not even let grads of AHP take their employment test, because they know they haven't been trained well enough to pass it. However, the companies will simply say that they "don't hire newbies" and "you must have 2 years' experience" which isn't true, you just need a good education where they know you can pass their test and do the work.
Here is what I did...I had a "grandma" come to my house...sm
two days a week to watch my kids while I worked. Found her by placing an ad in the paper, believe it or not, and she was an absolute gem. She loved my kids and my kids loved her. She was retired and just wanted to get out of the house and get a little pocket change so if I worked hard, I was able to come out well ahead. She was happy, my kids were happy, we were all happy. Then I worked around split shifts the rest of the week. If you have family that will gladly watch your 5 year old, why not share the love? It would be good for him to be with someone else who enjoys his company and can give him undivided attention, and you can knock out some big lines while he is visiting with them.
Same in my city -- nothing in-house
The Squid has taken over all the big facilities in my area. I never see ads for hospital MTs either in the paper or on their web sites.

I did go on an interview last year for an in-house MT in a GI practice. While they had upgraded their dictation system, they had no medical spell checker and their sole reference consisted of an old Stedman's GI word book, and this was a dept. of 6 transcriptionists. I didn't get hired. I think I just got called because the lead wanted to ask me questions on the DL about working from home for the Squid.

At any rate, I am leery of small practices as I used to be a legal secretary and had the most horrible experiences in the small legal practices, so I can only assume the doctors aren't much better.
Start in-house!
Meryl, I can't believe no one answered your post! If you are new, I highly recommend that you start in-house, as a lot of us did. You can get the help you need starting out. Benefits are usually good working in a hospital or doctor's office.

If you don't see any jobs in the newspaper locally, put out some feelers. I got my best job, one I have been doing for 13 years, at my daughter's oral surgeon's office. I mentioned I do transcription and asked who did theirs. Turned out the bookkeeper did it when she had time.

It is difficult to work at home just starting out due to the lack of the support you need.

Good luck, Meryl. We all wish you the best.

Work at home or in house
What is the difference in training for the two?  Can a person be trained in one and then go into the other right from the start.
New MT, Can't find In-house work
As a new graduate everyone keeps telling me to start in-house instead of trying to get on with a national company. Sounds great except that the local hospitals around me all outsource to national companies. I have checked everyone. So where am I supposed to get my experience? Even though I know starting in-house would be the best place for me to learn as a new MT and have other MTs around to help and answer questions I can not find anywhere to work. Frustrated!!
Well, that depends. Some hospitals have in-house sm
and others outsource. I have found it depends what state you live in due to the large corporate health systems.

In my state, there are hospitals that hire for at-home positions after 6 months to 1 year of being in-house.

Other hospitals are hiring in-house only, and others only outsource.
Don't forget...new episode of House tonight!!!!

MT Jobs

I have been trying unsuccessfully to e-mail AAMT.  I am interested in knowing why someone with prior experience cannot take an abbreviated course rather than the full course like M-Tec and Andrews provide.  Of course, my experience is old, but I have basically kept abreast of what is going on in the MT world.  All of the schools seem to want to give complete courses.  In other words, everyone is treated like a beginner.

Thanks for any suggestions.

There are jobs
Jobs are available, but some companies don't want to put their resources into training new MTs. It's a costly process. Those that do hire new people prefer to hire from schools with a proven track record in providing solid training. I was offered a job with a large national before I even graduated, but I went to a top school. Even so, the company had to invest a lot of training and time in getting me up to speed. Choosing the right school is the key to doors opening when you graduate. If you didn't invest in a top-notch education, you may have to work harder to find that first job.

LOOK AT ALL JOBS.
I have been doing this for three months, and I did the same thing on my resume. You might have to start at a low pay rate, but it will get you experience.
JUST HANG IN THERE!
Where are all the jobs
because I cannot find any since my graduation in November????? Need and appraciate any POSITIVE feedback.
jobs
Don't give up.  I just graduated in November, and I applied to EVERY place I could.  Even if they said that they only hire experienced MTs, I submitted a cover with my resume that asked for the opportunity to test.  Of course, I got several denials, but I got a few takers, too.  And, the great part is that I have been working since Thanksgiving!!!  Keep looking, you'll get there!!!
Jobs MT
I read your post and would like information about Sten-Tel, Inc. I just recently graduated from Career Step in Nov. 2005 and need to get to work. You can e-mail me. Thanks
I have 2 IC jobs..

I still haven't finished the course.  However, I have managed to get two great IC jobs paying 9 and 10 cpl for acute care while still taking the course.   I love doing acute care.  I think Career Step is excellent.:o) I'm sure the other schools are excellent too, but CS is the one I chose.

Subject: jobs

I love this board.  I will use this in the future if I am stumped.  I am done with school, involved in more training BUT now I need a JOB!! Does any one have a good job lead for me doing transcription?  I was laid off at my waitressing job Tuesday for the winter! YIKES!

jobs
No one deserves a job more than any other person simply because they are a mother. LOL

Whether or not she is a mother, if she cannot provide services when the employer wants/needs, she doesn't deserve the job.

IT IS BUSINESS!!!

jobs
Where is this job. I would be intrested. I just finished courses online and don't know where to start looking. Thank you
Jobs
Check with your school first. They should have a list of companies/services that hire their students. Also, talk to other graduates of your program and find out where they are working.

Depending on what course you completed a lot of companies will waive their experience requirements and let you test. I know that RI Unlimited lets grads from the top 3 test, but I don't know if they are hiring newbies right now.
Jobs
I have a year of on the job training with a company who has gone downhill.  Any suggestions as to a company that would hire me.  I am a stay at home mom who is trying to provide for her family without having to pay the high prices for daycare.  I have done radiology, mammography, and pain management.
jobs
I have done MRI/CT, and cardiology testing reports. I did not mention those because I thought that it went with doing radiology. I do thank you for your advice.
Jobs = yes
Just type in Radiology transcription or medical transcription on the internet and you will find 100's of jobs to apply for online. That's exactly what I did and it paid off. Be picky and take your time on the tests.
Jobs
Does CareerStep not have a placement program. I thought they did.
Jobs
I graduated from Career Step about 6 months ago.  I have a job with Focus Infomatics.  I also had an offer from MedGarde.   They do hire new graduates.  I hope you find a job soon!
Me too, But where are these jobs?
I worked as a nurse in psych, dementia and behavioral health before becoming MT. I would love to find this type transcription work. I haven't found this kind of MT work yet, and I've been looking too.

Seems to me if you have extensive experience you should be able to find a job.

I am a "newbie" just having finished my medical transcription course. can anyone point me in the direction of companies that will hire a rookie who wants to work from home?
MT jobs
How many of you have finished school (pls state which one) and started working soon after? Need to know!
GO WITH USA JOBS!
The companies who hire only USA workers proudly post that on their websites.  Support them.  Help them grow.  They do not hire someone to do 4 hours a day and call it full time.  They can not afford to waste valued MT time because we are all they have.  The reason you do not have enough work is because the companies are doing ALOT more outsourcing since January 1.  That is not going to stop.  Competition is fierce.  Older MTs are getting put out of their jobs due to outsourcing and EMR.  Land yourself a job with a U.S. company and even if they lose your account because the client wants to outsource, they will do everything they can to keep you and provide you with other work as their companies grow.
