In this case I know exactly what you mean.  I have the same problem but I'm not going to let anyone influence me and I'm not going to try to influence anyone else, I don't feel that strongly about EITHER candidate.  I will discuss politics with anyone who wants to do it so long as I and they are resepectful.  If it starts getting out of hand I say something like (the truth), "I can't be very enthusiastic about EITHER candidate and whether Obama or McCain wins, we're in a heap of trouble."  In real life that usually turns the conversation to what is wrong with our country, economy, war, etc.  As you said, it is usually the Republicans who become absolutely rabid, on this forum as well as in real life.  In "real life" I usually just tell them, "all we can do is vote our conscience" and change the subject.
