Harriet Miers: Antonin Scalia in sheep's clothing

Harriet Miers: Antonin Scalia in sheep's clothing

October 11, 2005

By nominating Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court, President Bush has put forth a total unknown. A blank slate. A cipher. Not even the president knows where she stands on the issues because he never asked her.

That's what the White House wants you to think. Don't you believe it.

Of course, if you listen to most conservatives, Harriet Miers is as dangerous as a card-carrying member of the ACLU. I'm disappointed, depressed and demoralized, huffed the Weekly Standard's Bill Kristol. Her qualifications for the Supreme Court are nonexistent, puffed former presidential candidate Pat Buchanan.

Nonsense.

Make no mistake about it. This decision is too important. Replacing William Rehnquist with John Roberts was a wash. It's this appointment, to fill the shoes of swing-vote Sandra Day O'Connor, that will determine the future direction of the Supreme Court. Karl Rove never would have let George Bush nominate Miers if he didn't know she agreed with Bush on every issue.

It's not hard to figure out how Bush decided on Miers. If elected president, he promised in 2000, he would appoint to the Supreme Court justices like extreme conservatives Antonin Scalia or Clarence Thomas. John Roberts didn't fit the bill, so Bush knew he had to deliver this time around. But he also knew any one of the names on the conservatives' wish list -- Michael Luttig, Edith Jones or Janice Rogers Brown -- would stir up a firestorm in the Senate, which Bush wanted to avoid.

So Bush came up with Plan B, as brilliant as it is diabolical: Nominate someone who is every bit as conservative as Luttig, Jones or Brown, privately, but who is a complete mystery, publicly. And that's Harriet Ellan Miers. The perfect stealth candidate. Antonin Scalia in sheep's clothing.

In case you still harbor any doubts about her right-wing credentials, here's final proof. After four days of complaints from the far right, Karl Rove got on the phone to leading conservatives, starting with James Dobson, head of Focus on the Family. Rove convinced him to support Miers, Dobson confirmed, by giving him confidential information on her religious beliefs. Miers, like Bush, is an evangelical Christian.

Notice how the White House plays the religion card both ways. It was wrong for Democrats to raise the fact John Roberts is a Catholic, they argued, just one month ago.

Notice also what their doing so tells us about Harriet Miers. She's a soul mate of James Dobson, Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson. She's anti-choice, anti-stem cell research, anti-separation of church and state, pro-school prayer and pro-teaching intelligent design in public-school science classes. She's way out of the mainstream.

So what are Democrats waiting for? They know enough about Miers already to merit all-out opposition -- including the filibuster, if necessary. And they'd better act fast.

If Harriet Miers is confirmed, we'll be yearning for the good old days of moderate William Rehnquist.

Boy who cried wolf.
That tip of the iceberg line is getting a bit worn, don't you think?
I agree - McCain is a wolf.
Making promises he won't (or can't keep), offering tax breaks that won't amount to anything (his 1% rich friends will still get more than they need) and we will be given scraps hoping that appeases us, keeping the war going, oil companies will continue to profit, housing market will continue to decline, banks and brokerages will continue to be bailed out all while the American people suffer for it. We will be led into a depression before his time is done (while of course blaming the other side), the list goes on and on and on, all the while he will continue to call us "my friends".
Chicken Little/Cry Wolf Bush has no credibility.

He has lied to Americans and to the world so many times that if he actually made a mistake and told the TRUTH, nobody would be able to recognize it.

LOL at *pro-terrorist.*  Is that the *talking point* word of the day that you studied at the table while drinking your daily dose of Kool-Aid?   I'm not pro terrorist by any stretch of the imagination.  I'm also not gullible.  As far as bizarre, I think people who can't think for themselves, see the forest from the trees and continue to defend a known manipulative, deceitful liar until the end, regardless of facts to the contrary, are beyond bizarre.

And as far as J. C. Penney bills, check the date below.  As I said, this is nothing new.  I doubt you need to worry about your credit card bills, though.  Bush only attacks those who disagree with him or catch him in lies.  Ask Valerie Plame.

Pay too much and you could raise the alarm

By BOB KERR
The Providence Journal

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Walter Soehnge is a retired Texas schoolteacher who traveled north with his wife, Deana, saw summer change to fall in Rhode Island and decided this was a place to stay for a while.

So the Soehnges live in Scituate now and Walter sometimes has breakfast at the Gentleman Farmer in Scituate Village, where he has passed the test and become a regular despite an accent that is definitely not local.

And it was there, at his usual table last week, that he told me that he was madder than a panther with kerosene on his tail.

He says things like that. Texas does leave its mark on a man.

What got him so upset might seem trivial to some people who have learned to accept small infringements on their freedom as just part of the way things are in this age of terror-fed paranoia. It's that everything changed after 9/11 thing.

But not Walter.

We're a product of the '60s, he said. We believe government should be way away from us in that regard.

He was referring to the recent decision by him and his wife to be responsible, to do the kind of thing that just about anyone would say makes good, solid financial sense.

They paid down some debt. The balance on their JCPenney Platinum MasterCard had gotten to an unhealthy level. So they sent in a large payment, a check for $6,522.

And an alarm went off. A red flag went up. The Soehnges' behavior was found questionable.

And all they did was pay down their debt. They didn't call a suspected terrorist on their cell phone. They didn't try to sneak a machine gun through customs.

They just paid a hefty chunk of their credit card balance. And they learned how frighteningly wide the net of suspicion has been cast.

After sending in the check, they checked online to see if their account had been duly credited. They learned that the check had arrived, but the amount available for credit on their account hadn't changed.

So Deana Soehnge called the credit-card company. Then Walter called.

When you mess with my money, I want to know why, he said.

They both learned the same astounding piece of information about the little things that can set the threat sensors to beeping and blinking.

They were told, as they moved up the managerial ladder at the call center, that the amount they had sent in was much larger than their normal monthly payment. And if the increase hits a certain percentage higher than that normal payment, Homeland Security has to be notified. And the money doesn't move until the threat alert is lifted.

Walter called television stations, the American Civil Liberties Union and me. And he went on the Internet to see what he could learn. He learned about changes in something called the Bank Privacy Act.

The more I'm on, the scarier it gets, he said. It's scary how easily someone in Homeland Security can get permission to spy.

Eventually, his and his wife's money was freed up. The Soehnges were apparently found not to be promoting global terrorism under the guise of paying a credit-card bill. They never did learn how a large credit card payment can pose a security threat.

But the experience has been a reminder that a small piece of privacy has been surrendered. Walter Soehnge, who says he holds solid, middle-of-the-road American beliefs, worries about rights being lost.

If it can happen to me, it can happen to others, he said.

I agree - it's a valid issue - for the WOLF.

Sarah Palin & aerial wolf-killing

Not easy to watch, but if she's for this, then I'm against her.

At least her clothing will be going to charity

A Repub in Independent's clothing. You know
OINK
Palin clothing really only $50k vs. $150k

nm

OMG - dissing the clothing. How superficial.
*
Hey there! I like it, but what about clothing, housing, medicines......sm
baby products (I nursed all three completely so THAT was cheap, but not an option for everyone), I don't think the MREs were meant to nourish little children, so I would worry about that. You still need utilities of some kind, because we all can't go out and cut down trees, so there is a lot to think about. I think if they INVESTED in hiring more social workers who were monitored to really do their jobs and fish out all the bogus welfare claims, get those people jobs or job training and paying back into the system, that would be wiser, because let's face it, there are some families that spend their welfare money on wasteful or indulgent stuff, but with this economic depression the Welfare is going to go more and more to unemployed families who were "let go," and I do worry about the nutrition and health of the little ones.
Donating Palin's expensive clothing to charity.
Mother who cannot afford food says to hungry child, "Would you like gabardine or charmeuse for breakfast, sweetheart?" Hopefully, Palin's leather clothing will be donated to hungry vegetarians!
I was also pleasantly surprised at the nice clothing, like SPalin! nm

sheep
At the end we are all sheep. divided into

Obama sheeples
and
McCain sheeples.

or
GP sheeples
and
Sam sheeples

Go, Obama GP sheeples!

if we were all sheep we would be voting for another
duh
Thankfully they are not sheep and don't all ..sm
vote the same. The republicans could have all voted against it too and won with just a few democrat or independent votes. What is your point? The majority is 1 in the Senate and 12? in the House. My independent senator for one did vote against it.
Have you talked to the sheep? sm
If not, you don't have a substantial argument that beastiality is cruelty to animals.

And yes, homosexuality does hurt people. It hurts parents and siblings and husbands and wives and children whose child or sibling or spouse or mother or father suddenly decides to come out of the closet. Or do their feelings not count?
looks like a bunch of sheep to me living in USA..sm

hmmmmm....?  Just because everyone is voting for Barack doesn't make any of it right - they all are bad candidates to some of us......

blechhhhhhhhhhhhh

JMO.........no flames required......

You should know. Obama sheep are pathetic.
nm
Sheep Alert! Oh-baaaaaaaaaaaa-ma!
lol at u!
You both are absolutely right. Sheep(le) will follow each
other right over the cliff and we are heading that way quickly. If it was happening in another country people here would wonder why the citizens are so dense; not here, they just hear the mantra of change, hope and promises (that cannot be kept) and are so addicted the first time they hear it they don't take the time to educate themselves about the possible ramifications until it is too late.
Sheep with flock mentality.
nm
The sheep are supporting Obama because of his
nm
Sheep, parrots and horses with blinders on. Oh well, nothing
.
It never ceases to amaze me of the sheep in this world.
nm
Who you callin' sheep? WE aren't part of the Obama flock which is why

you blast the tea parties and try to downplay their significance.  The sentiment behind the tea party is that we shouldn't be part of any flock!  We should be thinking on our own.  We shouldn't hide behind party lines and blindly follow our politicians to our ruin, republican or democrat!

Geez, talk about totally blind.  If it doesn't have a big fat O stamped on it, you won't listen.  Just a bunch of freaking robots.... O rhetoric goes in and nothing relevant comes out!  I thought you lefties were "intellectuals" and "free thinkers."  Now you're just Obama groupies clinging to his empty promise of hope and change!  Grow a brain!  Exercise your brain cells and THINK!

If she is elected
What I meant is I will vote in the election but if she wins I will dis-own this country after that. If she gets in it will confirm my beliefs that the people's votes do not count. It's already starting to turn out that way. Clearly Obama is ahead right now, but I am hearing talks of the delegates deciding at the convention who will be the candidate no matter who is ahead. How fair is that??? If he is ahead by the people and the delegates how can the super delegates (who happen to all be on Hillary's side) come in and wipe out all the votes and delegate votes already casted.
Cya. And if they are elected I will still be here...
holding their feet to the fire, with my "Don't Blame Me I Didn't Vote for Them" sticker, and ready with the I told you so's. Y'all come back now...hear?

Must be so empowering to be so smug. Women who are thoughtful and intelligent...who attack another woman (Palin) like snarling dogs but would not attack one of their own? Yeah, loaded with class you thoughtful and intelligent women are. Please. Your actions bely your words.
So, if he is elected -
who is going to be running the country? If he wants to be my candidate, he needs to step up and let us see what he is made of and not let #2 take his spot. I have not yet seen a VP up front in all my years voting as I have seen with this ticket. We should be focusing on the the Presidential candidate and not the VP. I can still be swayed but I am leaning towards the Obama ticket. I need to see a strong presidential candidate - not a strong vice presidential candidate.
I already have next-to-none. If he's elected, at least
no/msg
Exactly! It's man's will that O was elected, not God's.
And it is precisely for that reason this country will suffer greatly.  Mankind has been putting their human will before the will of God for centuries and this world will not be left to stand much longer because of it.  THAT is God's will.  And those of us who understand this are safe and secure.
We (as in probably not you) elected him....(sm)

as far as foreign affairs go to restore credibility to the US...and that's what he's doing.  -- As opposed to the shrub method of trying to bully the world.  Get a grip and try to catch up with the rest of us.

She's not even ready to be elected

That's how W got elected! U mean that was illegal! Huh!
Can't imagine the pubs doing anything illegal.,,,,,,,
All politicians lie to get elected.

We are all fooling ourselves if we thing otherwise.  It is literally picking the lesser of two evils.  The one thing that I can say is that at least McCain makes decisions.  He votes instead of just voting present like Obama and when Obama actually has voted yes or no.....he has consistently said one thing and voted the exact opposite.  I just do not think he has the experience or the ability to make executive decisions.  I do not trust his associations and I do not have the same values as he does.

If McCain were elected and were to die, she would be...sm
a puppet president with the strings being pulled by the extreme religious right wing. That is why he was under pressure to appoint her. Now they will support McCain, tit for tat.

My advice would have been to have Colin Powell as a running mate, if he would even agree to do so, and to run on proper state of the art care for the injured troops coming back from Iraq and Afghanistan. I think that people would be able to swallow the war if they knew we didn't forget about the vets when they came home.
As I am sure if Obama is elected....
as the babies mount up dying in the closets of hospitals and we turn into a socialist state I will be very, very ill as well...but my conscience will be clear.
Could be that if O is elected, those nations
x
How is Obama getting elected ...sm
saying the majority of Americans don't put the country first?
Quite evident, you elected the man who
your guns and your bibles and reelected the man who called you racist rednecks.
Obama said what he had to to get elected. Now
nm
LOL! How did that woman get elected
nm
When Obama was elected

those who supported the opposition and who warned of the types of sweeping changes to come during his presidency were told not to jump to conclusions based on what he had said during the campaign, or with whom he had chosen to associate throughout his life but to ''give him a chance'' to show the American people what he would actually do.  We were told that racial prejudice and sour grapes were behind our feelings and that Obama would prove himself worthy of the office.  To me, in just four months he has proven the exact opposite and further demonstrated a lack of character.

I did not necessarily want McCain in office.  I voted the ''NObama'' ticket because I felt McCain would be slightly less destructive to our country and because I was pretty sure he is not a marxist. Voting third party would have been a wasted vote.

Sure, had McCain been elected I would have told his opposition to give him a chance to prove his worth as well. (I believe McCain's character has already been proven; I'm sure you'll correct me if I'm wrong.)   But if he then demonstrated himself, through his words and actions, to be a screwup and/or a liar I would be posting exactly the same type of opinion.

I doubt he will be elected again.......... sm
because I doubt there will even be an election in 2012. At the rate things are going now, I can well imagine Obama invoking martial law prior to the election and making himself into a dictator. Chavez would be so proud.
The Bush was not elected song is getting old.
To truly prove you are not bitter, try not mentionig it again. It seems the left has enough problems with Bush without bringing that up.  JFK was not legally elected either.  Historians now know that Illinois was bought for him by papa.  Life goes on. But the bitterness of carrying around a load of rage just never seems to leave.
Once either one is elected we are pretty much powerless...
to hold anyone's feet to the fire. However, the Obama adoring masses here will make excuses no matter how many mistakes he makes or how many promises he does not fulfill. Toe that party line. If you criticize him for not doing what he said he would do, you will be a lonely voice of one I'm afraid.

Yes, I will be watching McCain/Palin to see if they keep campaign promises. Because if someone does not find a way to work in a bipartisan manner, both parties are going to continue messing us over and doing what is best for their pocketbooks and political careers. They need to forget party after the election and get about the people's business. And only one candidate has said right up front he will be on them to make them do that. That is why I am voting for him.

From a national security standpoint, I think Obama is a huge, huge mistake.

That being said...yes, I will be watching.
you won't have any $ left if this commie gets elected. nm

McCain is not 80. He would be if elected 2 terms (nm)

So you don't care if Obama is elected only by
voters who don't actually exist......including illegals?
I might have to if your man gets elected. Maybe we'll be co workers nm
