Why he keeps saying that.

The media and its talking heads have been having a feeding frenzy of speculation about what Obama will reveal once he has thoroughly investigated his staff's relationships/contacts (or lack thereof) to his own satisfaction. They feed on scandal and this is their only way can keep the Obama aspect of the story alive. This is why he has to keep on repeating himself on that. I too am content to wait until the documents are released, but the media is another story.

It is my impression that because the health care situation is so integral to the economy that it is a first-100-day priority. From what I understand, Obama has his ideas about the funding, but will be giving Daschle enough space and time to do his job and come up with suggestions to add to the dialogue. It also seems to be somewhat of a consensus between economists that spending is in order if we are to dig our way out of this recession; an investment in the future of sorts.

My promise keeper comment was based on the one he made about keeping us informed. So far, so good. Wait and see is a reasonable approach to the rest of the doubts you have expressed.

I would like to add that FDR was dealing with a situation which in many ways was much worse than where we find ourselves now, especially in terms of the collapse of the banks and the unemployment rate, which reached an all-time high in 1932 of 32%. Between 1929 and 1932, 5000 banks went out of business! Between September 1929 and April 1930, the Dow lost a staggering 89% of its value (peak to trough) and did not recover its pre-crash levels until 1954! We're not there yet....not even close.
