Martin Luther King was killed in Memphis, where I lived, when I was two years old. My mother said fire hoses were used to hold back protesters. They were so afraid.

I was bussed to all black schools out of my white neighborhood to the ghetto schools. I was one of two white children in all the grades of the elementary school.

My extended family was very racist.

I voted for Obama. I cried during his speech and my son asked me why. Because he is special. This is special. I am proud we elected him. He is my generation. He speaks for me and my kids.
